Metaphorically SellingReview Date: 2009-02-12
Metaphorically and literally a "must have"Review Date: 2009-02-03
I recommend this book to anyone who uses words to connect with others, or to inform, persuade, or sell anything.
Read This Book Before Any Other Book On SalesReview Date: 2008-03-08
If you want to sell more, this is the book for youReview Date: 2007-12-18
* Lack of understanding
* No urgency
* No differentiation between products
* Confusing value with price
* Fear of change
* Fear of large commitment
* No perceived value-add
* Fear of getting burned. Again.
Then she quickly gives you ways to communicate through the blind spots.
Ever heard of a Horse Chart? That's a PowerPoint where you have a picture/chart (say a Horse) with a title that says
exactly what it is (Horse). Nothing about the impact, effect or utility of the chart in the title. Instead of Sales use a title that talks to clients issues. ( Sales drop dramatically in the 3rd quarter)
A line I really enjoyed. " People simply can not imagine needing something they have not experienced - unless its explained in terms of what they know and love ."
This is a book for those sales and marketing people who want to kick down the doors and storm the castles of their reluctant prospects. In dong so you will be able to make more money than ever before.
Metaphorically SellingReview Date: 2007-07-16
Metaphorically Selling is an important resource. This book teaches and enlightens the reader while it entertains, keeping both halves of the brain happy. Moreover, the evolving chapters of this book actively guide the reader through those nagging doubts about whether he or she can actually create his or her own appropriate metaphors. Thus, after reading this book, the reader can't help but spontaneously come up with appropriate metaphors for any situation. Though this book is meant for increasing business success, the concepts in this book can be used to communicate or teach more effectively at work and in everyday life.

A MUST READReview Date: 2007-02-05
I'm shocked that a book like this can be around, it's sad that there is enough anti-breastfeeding companies etc. to warrent the book.
Should be Required ReadingReview Date: 2007-04-04
The statistics and studies cited, and information contained, are invaluable in understanding how we came to be a formula-feeding society. And they are the nuggets of how we can reverse that situation. Inform yourself! And you'll begin to be able to inform others, too [given opportunities]. I'm amazed how many people don't recognize the duplicity of formula companies in their product marketing, here and in the Developing World.
I wish this book were out of date and irrelevant!Review Date: 2006-03-23
Along the way, Baumslag and Michels include some really amusing sidelights like the invention of the stroller by a New York man, and its adoption by Queen Victoria. One tiny snit: they're anti-swaddling, considering it a barbaric, backward practice that only occurs in backward, barbaric places and should be stamped out.
It strengthened the Lactivist in me!Review Date: 2006-01-03
There are heartbreaking tales of the number of babies who were killed by artifical feeding.
I cannot reccomend this book enough! Read it before you have children, it will make you see formula (and the Nestle corporation) in a whole new light.

care and conciousness not seen perhaps since the greeks. he understood,
as he once wrote, that the novel form ended with flaubert. in the centuries after picasso and stravinsky there is no place for anything in
literature which makes people remain sitting, whithout standing and perhaps dancing. the same thing could be said about pound, very different though very twin.
Greatness compromised Review Date: 2005-12-29
As one raised on 'April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land' and 'Let us go then you and I when the evening is spread out against the sky, like a patient etherized upon a table' the most memorable lines are certainly of the first phase where it ends not with a bang but with a whimper.
Yet my admiration for the hypnotic power of Eliot's memorable lines is strongly qualified by my knowledge of his 'Burbank with a Baedaker, and Bluestein with a Cigar' with his all too fashionable literary anti- Semitism. Of course Eliot was not preaching death camps and extermination but he did connect his work to the tradition of Christian Anti- Semitism.
Thus I have always had difficulty being comfortable with my 'enjoying of Eliot's poetry. And I have never been able to sympathetically read 'The Quartets.' They have always seemed to me to be too impersonal characterless and abstract.
Eliot who for most of the century strode the English Departments as if he were a colossus did noble work in reviving interest in 'The Metaphysicals' but somehow failed in my mind to write a poetry humanly rich in the deepest sense.

My favourite poems would have to be 'The Hollow Men', 'Love song of Prufrock', 'Ash Wednesday' and 'Rannoch, by Glencoe (perfectly captured, drive through Rannoch and you'll see ;-)
Yep, definetly worth a read.

O'Brian grows as a writerReview Date: 2008-10-14
One of the best of the series. The only drawback is the rapidly approaching end.

Back in form Review Date: 2008-04-01
It was nice to see the series back in good form after the silliness of "The Far Side of the World." However, some of the on-going international intrigue that spans several books has gotten so complicated that I can't remember what it was about, and I find myself not caring, either.

The turning point where a good series becomes greatReview Date: 2007-11-16
Captain Jack Aubrey, ashore and in funds for a change, is induced to invest in the stock market on rumors of peace. When the rumors turn out to be a hoax, Aubrey is falsely accused and convicted of stock fraud and dismissed from the Navy. With his fortunes in ruins and reinstatement to his rank a dim prospect, his only choice is to take up privateering in the newly-decommissioned Surprise.
What sets this book apart from its predecessors is the extent to which we see Aubrey struggling honorably with devious opponents and murky matters quite at odds with his seamanlike competencies, and dealing with the loss of his Naval identity, so much a part of his being. In so doing, it contains some of O'Brian's finest writing - the scene of Aubrey's punishment in the pillory, cheered and protected by a city square full of seamen, is one of his most bitterly triumphant and touching.
The Reverse of the Medal is not the place to start reading this saga. However, the changes that it rings on the previous books' formula ensure a fresh tone and a new perspective that will invigorate even the most jaded veteran of stern-chases and luffing-matches.

"I have found something that is going to help me, for a long long time to come."Review Date: 2008-12-23
John Martin, Bukowski's longtime editor, assembled this collection so that the subject matter is in chronological order, no matter what age Bukowski was when he wrote it. Since so much of his work is either memoir or thinly disguised stories from his life, the resulting effect, with its mixture of memoir, poetry, and fiction, is a masterful, almost avant guarde, autobiography. The selections are short, but are far more attention grabbing than a conventional biography.
I thought the arrangement of the material notable too. First memoir, then two or three poems, then fiction, and so on and so on. If the poetry had been collected in its own section, I would have skipped over most of it. Instead, I could concentrate long enough on a couple selections to find I enjoyed it far more than I would have guessed.
It's difficult for me to differentiate between Charles Bukowski's life, and his work. It almost seems as though his life was his life's work, as strange as that may sound. His writing is taken directly from his experiences; in clear, simple prose, he unsparingly describes himself and the world around him, and then, with startling clarity, springs his insights on the reader. An example would be the title of this review, which is Bukowski's thoughts after discovering alcohol. After reading it, my thoughts were, "Yes, yes, this is how it is."
The danger in Charles Bukowski's works is assuming that his experiences led to his insights, which eventually led to his success. Or better yet, that his methods might work for anyone. I made that assumption for many years before I found out different. This is why I would not recommend this or any other Bukowski work unreservedly. Though I do not believe Bukowski himself would have advocated his lifestyle to anyone, by it's very nature it could be attractive to some who may not be aware of the titanic amount of effort it must have took for him to both live and write - it's that powerful. It is also brutal. That is the other reason I hesitate before recommending. It is sure to offend.
Finally, I wonder what Bukowski would think of the reviews of his work posted on this site (including mine). I have to believe he would laugh.
Recommended, with caveats.

Charles Bukowski takes you a trip that you soon won't forget. You will travel through a timeline that will have you anticipating what's next. The raw expression of life as depicted in his book made me want to become a writer.
Not only does he write a mean story he also has section filled with his poems, also amazing. You will not be dissapointed.

OK book, but you need to have a command of spanish alreadyReview Date: 2009-06-20
I just got my book a couple of weeks ago. I give it an ok rating, but definitely not a great rating. I personally didn't rate it higher because there are a number of key verbs that are not listed that i personally needed. I speak spanish at a very high level, but i am not fluent yet. But anyone who speaks or is learning to speak spanish knows that the verbs are everything, and i was hoping to shore up my spanish with learning all the tenses of verbs which i hear people use when they talk to me in everyday conversation that i didn't have a firm grasp of. That's where i was hoping that this book would fill in my final missing pieces, to which it does to some degree because there are lots of the important verbs there,and listed in all tenses which is great. It's just that it seems a lot of the ones that i was hoping to see aren't there. But never the less a good book, but definitely not for beginners, but for people with a good grasp of spanish already.
Anna Rivera's Review of Spanish VerbsReview Date: 2009-05-14
Spanish Verbs (Barron's Verb Series) is a shorter, pocket version of Barron's 501 Verbs. It contains 300 of the most commonly used Spanish verbs. One verb is listed per page, and all of them are fully conjugated followed by a few examples of usage.
Spanish Verbs weighs just 8 ounces, so it's perfect for travel. I carry mine just about everywhere as a quick reference tool.
I'm very impressed with this book as well as other material from Barron's. The verbs included in this book were well chosen, the layout is pleasing and organized, and there is an index in the back of the book that lists all the verbs in English alphabetical order, which makes everything easy to find. There's also an index of 1000 additional verbs that are cross referenced by conjugation to the original 300.
Students at any level will get a lot of use out of this guide. I recommend this book as well as Barron's 501 Verbs. Both should be in your Spanish language library.
