I involve my customers in the many benefits of radio advertising. This book is great because with metaphors I can quickly speak to my customer's "blindspot"...thus putting the appropriate picture inside their head. My customers connect immediately to what it is I wish to convey to them. I've found it to be a book that has been helpful in writing radio ads as well!!

Metaphorically and literally a "must have"

The title is "Metaphorically Selling" but I was recommended to read it as part of a public speaking program, and I found it as valuable as would any sales person. With humor, examples, and straight-out "how to" Anne Miller walks the reader through the processes of accessing the audience to discover what metaphors will work best with them, developing the metaphor in a series of easy, workbook style steps, how best to use them, and how to avoid mis-using them.

I recommend this book to anyone who uses words to connect with others, or to inform, persuade, or sell anything.

I have bought more than 100 books on selling techniques, psychology, attitude, performance, etc. This book should be alongside the bible for sales success. I re-read the book as soon as I finished it and I consider myself far more comfortable during presentations using Ms. Miller's advice.

Reading this book is like hitting a hole in one. Finding so much good advice and ideas in one book for sales is rare. I jotted down so many ideas pertinent to my clients I filled several pages! Her section on prospect blind spots is just so dead on target. Blind spots usually encountered are:

* Lack of understanding
* No urgency
* No differentiation between products
* Confusing value with price
* Fear of change
* Fear of large commitment
* No perceived value-add
* Fear of getting burned. Again.

Then she quickly gives you ways to communicate through the blind spots.

Ever heard of a Horse Chart? That's a PowerPoint where you have a picture/chart (say a Horse) with a title that says

exactly what it is (Horse). Nothing about the impact, effect or utility of the chart in the title. Instead of Sales use a title that talks to clients issues. ( Sales drop dramatically in the 3rd quarter)

A line I really enjoyed. " People simply can not imagine needing something they have not experienced - unless its explained in terms of what they know and love ."

This is a book for those sales and marketing people who want to kick down the doors and storm the castles of their reluctant prospects. In dong so you will be able to make more money than ever before.

Metaphorically Selling: How to Use the Magic of Metaphors to Sell, Persuade, & Explain Anything to Anyone is a guide to making use of metaphors for increased success in business. This book introduces the reader to the world of metaphors, pointing out that the use of metaphors is a fairly natural everyday process. The author then explains that the use of metaphors is actually the key to keeping both sides of the human brain engaged and actively attentive. Furthermore, the use of metaphors further understanding of new material through the connection of this material to already understood, well thought out analogies. In this way, metaphors are the key to keeping clients and customers interested in your presentation while increasing their understanding of the uniqueness of your product. Once, these key concepts are entrenched into the reader's mind, the author guides the reader through various exercises that aim to teach the reader to choose and use metaphors for his or her own purposes.

Metaphorically Selling is an important resource. This book teaches and enlightens the reader while it entertains, keeping both halves of the brain happy. Moreover, the evolving chapters of this book actively guide the reader through those nagging doubts about whether he or she can actually create his or her own appropriate metaphors. Thus, after reading this book, the reader can't help but spontaneously come up with appropriate metaphors for any situation. Though this book is meant for increasing business success, the concepts in this book can be used to communicate or teach more effectively at work and in everyday life.

This book is invaluable in increasing awareness and education about breastfeeding. It also exposes the negative social and financial implications our country suffers from not placing the needs of parents and families first. I really appreciate that its underlying focus is on the family. This book incredibly informative on a variety of issues all directly related to breastfeeding and the consequent emotional and psychological health of not only the baby, but the mother and entire family as well.

A MUST READ

I can go over all the reason why to read this book, but it's easier to say you have to read it! If you have come across this book, you must be interested in breastfeeding, this book won't tell you how to do it, but it will tell you why and give you a much greater feeling of how to promote it to others!

I'm shocked that a book like this can be around, it's sad that there is enough anti-breastfeeding companies etc. to warrent the book.

Should be Required Reading

I was raised in a "breastfeeding family" but this book still was amazing. It should be required reading for college students in business ethics courses. Students majoring in health education, nutrition, family sciences, and women's issues, all should read this during their coursework.

The statistics and studies cited, and information contained, are invaluable in understanding how we came to be a formula-feeding society. And they are the nuggets of how we can reverse that situation. Inform yourself! And you'll begin to be able to inform others, too [given opportunities]. I'm amazed how many people don't recognize the duplicity of formula companies in their product marketing, here and in the Developing World.

I wish this book were out of date and irrelevant!

This definitive history of formula, pharmaceutical companies and infant death is highly readable, despite its depressing topic. While it would be comforting to think that formula fed babies only die at a higher rate than breastfed in places without access to clean water that just ain't so -- never has been, never will be, and the companies which make formula know that. Which is why the code of advertising (which formula -- which is to say, pharmaceutical -- companies continue to violate) adopted in the early years of the boycott applies around the world, including in the U.S.

Along the way, Baumslag and Michels include some really amusing sidelights like the invention of the stroller by a New York man, and its adoption by Queen Victoria. One tiny snit: they're anti-swaddling, considering it a barbaric, backward practice that only occurs in backward, barbaric places and should be stamped out.

It strengthened the Lactivist in me!

This book should be on every mother-to-be's MUST READ list. It goes into great detail about breastfeeding in other cultures, how the medical establishement derails a mothers efforts before she can even get started, and the overly agressive marketing tactics of the formula manufactures.

There are heartbreaking tales of the number of babies who were killed by artifical feeding.

I cannot reccomend this book enough! Read it before you have children, it will make you see formula (and the Nestle corporation) in a whole new light.

this book is very educational as far as a personal account of what it is like to walk the red path in todays society. Gives a background in historical knowledge and where certain beleifs/customs arose from, and actual events that took place. the first couple chapters are more of a history lesson on how the native americans were pushed out of their homelands, and then relates the struggle to keep the traditional beleifs and traditions alive. most of the ceremonial traditions are coverd in great detail so the reader would be able to attend and know what to expect. overall the book was quite refreshing and well written, focused more on a historical versus modern day spin on native american ceremony/traditions.

Eagle Man (Ed McGaa) shares his knowledge of Lakota Sioux spiritual practices as a way to include everyone who wants to heal our world. He calls those who revere Mother Earth and want to ensure her continuation, Rainbow People. He writes in an intimate way, as if talking with friends. He describes the meaning of the various rituals and myths and shares helpful information about how non-Native people may or may not participate. In addition to his personal journey and the sacred practices, he details techniques for building a sweat lodge, making a peace pipe and more. A fascinating book which has earned a place in my personal library.

with eliot, a maximum of content is achieved through a FORM worked with a
care and conciousness not seen perhaps since the greeks. he understood,
as he once wrote, that the novel form ended with flaubert. in the centuries after picasso and stravinsky there is no place for anything in
literature which makes people remain sitting, whithout standing and perhaps dancing. the same thing could be said about pound, very different though very twin.

The Eliot of despair, the Eliot of 'Prufrock' and 'Wasteland' is contended with and overcome by the Eliot of the 'Quartets'. The message of modern mankind's meaninglessness, the broken fragments ( of Tradition) shored against his ruin is replaced by the vision of sacred turning, a Christian vision of redemption. Eliot is a writer whose work and life break down into these two distinct periods each of which has its champions in defining what is best in him.
As one raised on 'April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land' and 'Let us go then you and I when the evening is spread out against the sky, like a patient etherized upon a table' the most memorable lines are certainly of the first phase where it ends not with a bang but with a whimper.
Yet my admiration for the hypnotic power of Eliot's memorable lines is strongly qualified by my knowledge of his 'Burbank with a Baedaker, and Bluestein with a Cigar' with his all too fashionable literary anti- Semitism. Of course Eliot was not preaching death camps and extermination but he did connect his work to the tradition of Christian Anti- Semitism.
Thus I have always had difficulty being comfortable with my 'enjoying of Eliot's poetry. And I have never been able to sympathetically read 'The Quartets.' They have always seemed to me to be too impersonal characterless and abstract.
Eliot who for most of the century strode the English Departments as if he were a colossus did noble work in reviving interest in 'The Metaphysicals' but somehow failed in my mind to write a poetry humanly rich in the deepest sense.

Truly, one of the giants

When you think of the best poets ever, T.S. Eliot is one of those that comes to mind. His work is well crafted, intelligent, beautifully written, and has a flow to it that few poets can match. And this is a fine collection for the Eliot lover or for the reader unfamiliar with Eliot. It's divided into several sections. The first section is his Prufrock section, poems from 1917, which contains probably his finest poems: "Prufrock", "Preludes" "Rhapsody on a Windy Night", "Hysteria", among others. Then there is the Poems 1920 section which also contains many fine poems ("Sweeney Erect" and "The Hippopotamus" being my favorites). Then follows his masterpiece The Wasteland. Then The Hollow Men which is followed by the wonderful Ash Wednesday. Then the Ariel Poems (which contains "Journey of the Magi"). Then there are two unfinished poems, "Sweeney Agonistes" and "Coriolan" which I thought were weak. Maybe they would have been great had he ever finished them. Then there is a section called minor poems followed by the mediocre "Choruses from 'The Rock.' And then there is what I consider to be his true masterpiece, "Four Quartets." And the book finishes with some occasional verses, one of which is a sweet and touching poem to his wife. This is a great collection of poems.

Good stuff

Yep, this is a great collection of Eliot's works. I initially found out about Eliot throught the Movie 'Apocalypse Now' in which Brando is heard reciting the poem 'The Hollow Men'. The poem sounded so good I hunted it down and came across this little book.

My favourite poems would have to be 'The Hollow Men', 'Love song of Prufrock', 'Ash Wednesday' and 'Rannoch, by Glencoe (perfectly captured, drive through Rannoch and you'll see ;-)

Yep, definetly worth a read.

As a person who has been chasing my own vision and studying the matter for over twenty years, this book blew me away. Actually a friend of mine made some book notes, where they had pulled out the best thoughts in the book, and sent these notes to me as a Word doc about six pages long. As I went through the notes, I kept thinking, this material is so rich, maybe I better just buy the book. I finally did and was not disappointed. I kept reading and thinking "Who is this guy?" and flipping to the picture on the book cover. I typcially make pencil marks in the margins of books to remind me of exceptionally profound areas. This book is so rich in useful information about forming and achieving a vision for your life that it would almost be easier to mark the areas that are not profound and useful.

Thanks Myles for an outstanding book.

Very good, tightly-scripted entry in the series. The last few, O'Brian has run out of historical events to fictionalize, and his plotting freed from the constraints of mapping to historical markers is really good. He has learned how to leave at least one unresolved conflict that keeps the reader on edge for the next entry, and those conflicts aren't always resolved for the good guys! Plus, he has learned how to quickly refresh the story from the previous entry in the readers mind at the beginning of the current one without long-winded exposition.

One of the best of the series. The only drawback is the rapidly approaching end.

This book, which by all means should be read before "The Letter of Marque" is a wonderful, if sad installment in the series. In the midst of the unfortunate treatment of Aubrey however, is a real powerful moment towards the end of the novel. Again, a real testament to the themes of honor and friendship that abound in this series.

This is the 11th novel in the Aubrey-Maturin seagoing series. This book is all about honor and reputation, how easy they are to lose, and how hard they are to get back. The story takes place mostly on land and finds Captain Jack Aubrey an easy mark for some stock swindlers who lure him into a confidence game, with terrible consequences. Doctor Stephen Maturin finds that he has been dumped by his flighty wife, who ran off with a Swedish officer. The book ends with the men in an unaccustomed circumstance, with Aubrey reliant on Maturin to salvage his own future.

It was nice to see the series back in good form after the silliness of "The Far Side of the World." However, some of the on-going international intrigue that spans several books has gotten so complicated that I can't remember what it was about, and I find myself not caring, either.

The turning point where a good series becomes great

Review Date: 2007-11-16
The twelve books that precede The Reverse of the Medal in the Aubrey-Maturin series together form a coherent, engaging chronicle of naval warfare, intrigue, and romance. Had its thirteenth installment been simply more of the same, the appeal might have begun to pale; however, with a single plot twist, Patrick O'Brian changes the rules of the game completely, handing Aubrey and Maturin a whole new set of challenges.(Note: plot spoilers follow).

Captain Jack Aubrey, ashore and in funds for a change, is induced to invest in the stock market on rumors of peace. When the rumors turn out to be a hoax, Aubrey is falsely accused and convicted of stock fraud and dismissed from the Navy. With his fortunes in ruins and reinstatement to his rank a dim prospect, his only choice is to take up privateering in the newly-decommissioned Surprise.

What sets this book apart from its predecessors is the extent to which we see Aubrey struggling honorably with devious opponents and murky matters quite at odds with his seamanlike competencies, and dealing with the loss of his Naval identity, so much a part of his being. In so doing, it contains some of O'Brian's finest writing - the scene of Aubrey's punishment in the pillory, cheered and protected by a city square full of seamen, is one of his most bitterly triumphant and touching.

The Reverse of the Medal is not the place to start reading this saga. However, the changes that it rings on the previous books' formula ensure a fresh tone and a new perspective that will invigorate even the most jaded veteran of stern-chases and luffing-matches.

Maybe the best book on AIDS since Randy Schultz's "And the Band Plays On". Osborne weaves an intricate and complex narrative incorporating several important themes of the history of AIDS in the Black Community. Whereas Schlitz covered the story of AIDS from Fire Island and San Francisco, Osborne starts his book with a history time walker. Along the way he describes the influences of seemingly disparate trends in destructive way of life for black people the real epidemic to define an epidemic that is as different in the Black Community as night is to day. This book is a MUST Read to anyone working in the field of HIV/AIDS. Case Managers, Program Designers and especially those who sit on Ryan White Title 1 Councils will find it every useful. The book is extremely well researched with a liberal sprinkling of anecdotes, facts and conjecture. The writing style is gloriously indirect and verbose in a very history teacher way, something that might not appeal to all, but which for me added to the joy of reading. I can think of several reasons to recommend this collection, and at least two to recommend staying away from it. Call it a five star review with warning labels.

John Martin, Bukowski's longtime editor, assembled this collection so that the subject matter is in chronological order, no matter what age Bukowski was when he wrote it. Since so much of his work is either memoir or thinly disguised stories from his life, the resulting effect, with its mixture of memoir, poetry, and fiction, is a masterful, almost avant guarde, autobiography. The selections are short, but are far more attention grabbing than a conventional biography.

I thought the arrangement of the material notable too. First memoir, then two or three poems, then fiction, and so on and so on. If the poetry had been collected in its own section, I would have skipped over most of it. Instead, I could concentrate long enough on a couple selections to find I enjoyed it far more than I would have guessed.

It's difficult for me to differentiate between Charles Bukowski's life, and his work. It almost seems as though his life was his life's work, as strange as that may sound. His writing is taken directly from his experiences; in clear, simple prose, he unsparingly describes himself and the world around him, and then, with startling clarity, springs his insights on the reader. An example would be the title of this review, which is Bukowski's thoughts after discovering alcohol. After reading it, my thoughts were, "Yes, yes, this is how it is."

The danger in Charles Bukowski's works is assuming that his experiences led to his insights, which eventually led to his success. Or better yet, that his methods might work for anyone. I made that assumption for many years before I found out different. This is why I would not recommend this or any other Bukowski work unreservedly. Though I do not believe Bukowski himself would have advocated his lifestyle to anyone, by it's very nature it could be attractive to some who may not be aware of the titanic amount of effort it must have took for him to both live and write - it's that powerful. It is also brutal. That is the other reason I hesitate before recommending. It is sure to offend.

Finally, I wonder what Bukowski would think of the reviews of his work posted on this site (including mine). I have to believe he would laugh.

Recommended, with caveats.

The recording quality may not be absolutely perfect but the item captures Bukowski as he was, and adds significantly to the image one gets about his personality and his views from reading his, frequently repetitive books.

This book is mind-blowing and raw with emotion...just amazing

Some one gave this book to me to read highschool and the second I started reading it I was addicted. Now I'm in my late 20's and had to have it again.

Charles Bukowski takes you a trip that you soon won't forget. You will travel through a timeline that will have you anticipating what's next. The raw expression of life as depicted in his book made me want to become a writer.

Not only does he write a mean story he also has section filled with his poems, also amazing. You will not be dissapointed.

Bukowski is merciless. He can be quite cruel. He is a neutron bomb who destroys fantasy and make believe and leaves behind empty unadorned buildings. Like really rough scotch or bourbon, he can only be read in doses. In fact, his writing is an acquired taste. If don't want to see into the core reality of life, do not buy, let alone read his books. But if you are into honesty and courage and already know that no good deed ever goes unpunished, please enjoy. Bukowski's works are an affirmation of reality. Hobbes would love him. Ohm.

I just got my book a couple of weeks ago. I give it an ok rating, but definitely not a great rating. I personally didn't rate it higher because there are a number of key verbs that are not listed that i personally needed. I speak spanish at a very high level, but i am not fluent yet. But anyone who speaks or is learning to speak spanish knows that the verbs are everything, and i was hoping to shore up my spanish with learning all the tenses of verbs which i hear people use when they talk to me in everyday conversation that i didn't have a firm grasp of. That's where i was hoping that this book would fill in my final missing pieces, to which it does to some degree because there are lots of the important verbs there,and listed in all tenses which is great. It's just that it seems a lot of the ones that i was hoping to see aren't there. But never the less a good book, but definitely not for beginners, but for people with a good grasp of spanish already.

This is Anna Rivera of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews site and author of Anna Rivera's 1000 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Words (Spanish Edition) and Anna Rivera's 800 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Phrases (Spanish Edition).

Spanish Verbs (Barron's Verb Series) is a shorter, pocket version of Barron's 501 Verbs. It contains 300 of the most commonly used Spanish verbs. One verb is listed per page, and all of them are fully conjugated followed by a few examples of usage.

Spanish Verbs weighs just 8 ounces, so it's perfect for travel. I carry mine just about everywhere as a quick reference tool.

I'm very impressed with this book as well as other material from Barron's. The verbs included in this book were well chosen, the layout is pleasing and organized, and there is an index in the back of the book that lists all the verbs in English alphabetical order, which makes everything easy to find. There's also an index of 1000 additional verbs that are cross referenced by conjugation to the original 300.

Students at any level will get a lot of use out of this guide. I recommend this book as well as Barron's 501 Verbs. Both should be in your Spanish language library.

Reliable. Convenient. Informative.

Spanish verbs is a great book for beginning and even intermediate Spanish learners. At the beginning, there is a thorough overview of the uses of all of the Spanish tenses. After that, there are hundreds of fully conjugated verbs with general definitions and examples of each verb. This is especially useful with irregular verbs. Spanish Verbs not only delivers the information on each tense but also gives conjugated examples of some very useful verbs. I highly recommend this book to the beginning and intermediate Spanish learner because it clearly states the uses and delivers the conjugations in a standard, organized order. Plus, all verbs are in alphabetical order so no hassle. Be sure to purchase this book; it will enhance your Spanish whether you are looking for an introduction to Spanish, a review of the verbs and verb forms, or simply as a reference to be used as needed.

Well organized and astudiously chosen set of verbs. Easy to navigate format. Missing an English to Spanish reference and serious students will quickly find a need for a more comprehensive guide. I am a Level II or III student and it is the most used book of my reference materials, including my Spanish/English dictionary. ***R***

This book was recommended to me, and I'm glad I bought it. It has payed for itself a few times over already, and it has removed some of my fears regarding my own ability to homeschool my kids.

Ruth Beechick's advice provides a great jumping off place for homeschooling. I actually have the three individual books, which make up the sections of this book, and each one is short and to the point, giving practical advice that works. I especially love the way she explains how children learn math. Over and over again I come back to her words of wisdom anytime I begin to stress over teaching my child.

Gentle, easy, understandable, this is a must read for all beginning homeschoolers, and for some experienced hs Moms who are stressed out with workbooks and curriculum that push children to learn concepts that they are not developmentally ready to learn.

Simple, and thorough

Such a small book, yet packed with awesome wisdom. Very simple for first-third grade, yet very complete for basic academics. I wish I had found this book before I committed to a curriculum. It would have saved me quite a bit of money.

I refer to this book often to help me stay on track. Its contents offer straight forward advice on teaching in the early grades. You'll even find it beneficial to read this book when you have a preschooler, to get an idea of what lies ahead and what to do when your child is ready. In addition, reading this book will help the homeschooling parent in choosing curriculum, not with specific suggestions, but by general ideas offered.

The included wall chart of phonics and numbers has been helpful, but leaves something to be desired in the way it was printed in only blue and yellow ink. It's just bonus material. The book is your investment.
