rigorous exploration of how to end inequality
All the contributors to this volume are seriously committed to solving the persistent riddle of economic inequality in advanced economies as well as preventing the undermining of democracy by the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few. To this end, they set out bold proposals which transcend the pitfalls of both corporate capitalism and the now defunct, East European socialisms. Issues such as property rights, housing, school choice, political associations, economic efficiency and the benefits of asset redistribution are all discussed with rigor and clarity by the several contributors. All the topics are excellent counterblasts to the current aopologists for Conservative policies in the era of 'globalization'. This one is a must for all those concerned about the future of economic justice and the evolution of democratic societies.

Jackson challenges exisiting views of Bolivian history
Jackson's book uses the community of Cochabamba as a case study to examine life in rural Bolivia from colonial times to the present. Relying on archival materials from Cochabamba to develop his analysis, Jackson challenges the tendency to portray Andean natives as hapless victims of modernity. His examination of agrarian, economic, political, and demographic history clearly demonstrates that peasant natives of Bolivia have played, and continue to play, an active role in that nation's development.

Much like Nils Jacobsen's excellent book, Mirages of Transition: The Peruvian Altiplano, 1780-1930, Jackson's book depicts a highly resilient peasant population that continues to flourish despite centuries of exploitation and displacement. This book is an example of how to do research using rural archives. It is a must-read for students of Bolivia and the Andes generally in addition to those interested in demographic or economic history.

Professional Sports As A Business
Frank P. Jozsa, Jr. and John J. Guthrie, Jr. have written one of the most relevant books of its kind. "Relocating Teams and Expanding Leagues in Professional Sports", covers the subject of professional sports and how those sports react to market conditions in today's era of big money and demanding fans. From the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers all the way to the expansion Cleveland Browns this book is a must read for anyone involved in the decision making process which may involve the future of a professional sports franchise. People who will benefit from this book includes, but is not limited to, management in the front office of a professional sports franchise, state and local government officials who may be asked to subsidize a franchise or stadium/arena, fans who want to take their knowlege of professional sports to another level, and sports writers who want to be the most knowlegeable in their competitive field of sports reporting. After reading this book all will be able to answer the questions, Why did the Baltimore Colts really move to Indianapolis (in the middle of the night)? Why did the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta? How many NBA teams moved between 1952 and 1973? And most importantly, which sports teams are the most likely to move in the next few years and why? Are tax funded stadiums and arenas a good investment for the taxpayer directly and indirectly? Instead of guessing or taking an emotional stab at these questions you will KNOW the answers. As in any business, you can predict the future to some degree by understanding the forces which come into play by knowing what happened in the past. If you desire to truly understand how professional sports work, then this book is a must read for you. Don't let your competition be the only ones with all the answers. If you like professional sports then this book is a a truly enjoyable read.

The Report of the Twentieth Century Fund Task Force on Market Speculation and Corporate Governance: Who's Minding the Store

Essential criticism.
This small book is a plea for a long term corporate strategy against the actual short term vision of the business officers, who are hounded by financial analysts only interested by short-term capital gains.
The task force gives some excellent recommendations, although it admits that it will be difficult to change the actual mentality.

The report also contains a very good analysis of the state of the US economy and of the real challenges: sluggish productivity, decline in real wages for four-fifths of American workers, poverty, unequal income distribution, deteriorating savings, poor education.

It reminds us of Pigou's fundamental analysis of the irrationality of the human behavior: 'human society tends to place too high a discount rate on everything, due to an irrational impatience, a foolish desire for pleasure now relative to the future.' (p. 97)

A small but important book and a must read for every economist.

Resource Allocation in the Public Sector: Values, Priorities and Markets in the Management of Public Services
Published in Paperback by Routledge (September, 1998)
Author: C. M. Fisher
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

An Excellent Guide
Until I read Mr Fisher's seminal work, I had no or little interest in resource allocation in the public sector. After reading it, however, I consider myself a complete convert!! Mr Fisher makes what would appear to be a somewhat dull subject abolutely enthralling - in the same way that Hamlet is not just a play about a fictional Prince, this book is not just a book about resource allocation in the public sector, and I would advise anyone with even the slightest interest in values, priorities and markets in the management of public services to pick up a copy now. A perfect stocking filler!

Return to Free Market Economics?
Published in Hardcover by Holmes & Meier Publishers, Inc. (June, 1978)
Author: John Jewkes
Amazon base price: $32.50
Average review score:

The darkest hour is just before the dawn.
Published on the eve of Mrs. Thatcher's election as British Prime Minister in 1979, this collection of papers by John Jewkes published between 1939 and 1978 stands as a free market beacon against the forces of collectivist darkness which had subsumed Britain especially from the onset of world war two.

Jewkes, along with a mere handful of others, held their ground aginst these forces, holding firm to a belief in people, that is a belief in the free market. It is hard to imagine in these days what it was like to live in the People's Republic of Great Britain in the post-war period, where the commanding heights of the economy had been overcome by the onslaught of government troops. The vast majority of economists, well meaning folks I am sure were the high priests of the new religion of planning, believing as they did in the New Jerusalem of steady growth and no unemployment.

Jewkes stood against the tide of the new paradigm and continued to harrass the enemy with the odd skirmish as contained in these writings. Today, some consider the battle to be won, that free markets rule, but more wiser heads see that progress has been made on the battlefield but the war is not yet over. The subjects of these essays have much contemporary relevance, and rereading them today reminds us that we should always be on our guard against erosion of our freedoms and against the return of the dark lords of planning.

Highly recommended!

a seminal work
Clearly this is the seminal work of the past 10 years in the field of B2B need-based segmentation Anyone who wants to obtain a thorough understanding of the ins and outs of the subtle artistry of segmentation should look to this book. the only sad thing is that, although you may come across one of the authors at a conference, no updated revision has been forthcoming to take into account the nuances and advances made in the supporting technology and analytical tools
