Outperforming the Market: Everyone's Guide to Higher-Profit, Lower-Risk Investing
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (12 June, 1998)

Big, institutional investors have long known that picking the right stocks and bonds can be less important to the health of their portfolios than finding the right mix of asset types--stocks large and small, bonds short-term and long. Asset allocation largely determines a portfolio's likely rate of return and level of risk. In Outperforming the Market, money manager John Merrill investigates the long-term historical performance of various asset classes to help individual investors discover the best ways to divvy up their money for market-beating returns with below-average risk.

Looking back, Merrill concludes that many popular investments have not been worth their risk, including long-term Treasury bonds and foreign stocks trading in local currencies. The best risk-adjusted returns have come from U.S. stocks large and small, 30-day Treasury bills, and 5-year Treasury bonds. Merrill shows how to use index and actively managed mutual funds to build portfolios apportioned among these assets according to various investor time horizons and levels of risk aversion.

Not the most exciting approach to investing, Merrill's method requires consistency and discipline, the ability to do nothing while a particular mix of assets underperforms, as any mix sometimes will. If the past is prologue, however, investors able to follow Merrill's advice will be able to buy their excitement elsewhere. --Barry Mitzman

Excellent *****John Merril has done his homework.
John Merril sets up three portfolios, each holding stocks bonds and cash.He takes the reader thru every bull and bear market from 1926 thru 1997. Many authors of investment books avoid the investment history of the 1930s and other prolonged bear markets but Merril wants the reader to realize the risk and the reward that comes whith investing.I would urge anyone who has a 401k plan or Ira to purchase this book. Mr.Merril may have some different views then others when it comes to indexing and foreign investing but explains his views honestly. This is a great book and I don`t know why since it`s published over a year ago that no one has reviewed it.This is a book that should be updated every year.

Patching: Restitching Business Portfolios in Dynamic Markets (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition)
Published in Digital by Harvard Business School Press (27 March, 2004)
Authors: Kathleen M. Eisenhardt and Shona L. Brown
Amazon base price: $7.00

Following opportunities rather than planning
Kathleen Eisenhardt is Professor of Strategy and Organization at Stanford University. Shona Brown is a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Toronto. They are the authors of 'Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos' (1998). This article was published in the May-June 1999 issue of Harvard Business Review.

In this article the authors discuss patching, which "is the strategic process by which corporate executives routinely remap businesses to changing market opportunities. ... it can build extraordinary value by dynamically stitching the quilt of businesses within the corporation." This patching process can take several forms, from splitting and combining to exiting chunks of businesses. Although it sounds like reorganizing, patching requires a distinctive mind-set whereby structure is thought off as inherently temporary; patching follows business opportunities instead of corporate strategic planning. The authors discuss different approaches to patching, requirements, the groundwork, and the principles to patching. The authors also provide a handy questionnaire for checking whether it is time to repatch, an explanation for the 'new' executive role, and the relationship between chaos, complexity theory and patching. Last but not least, the authors explain and discuss the common stumbling blocks of patching.

Yes, I do like this article a lot better than their previous article on time pacing. It is much more realistic in explaining how organizations can cope with dynamic markets, whereby the authors predominantly use examples from the computer industry. This excellent article is especially useful for managers of multibusiness organizations. The article is written in simple US-English.

Great Narrative
This is one of the best economic books I have ever read. Filled with concise arguments and figures, Sachs makes his case for the liberalization of the Polish economy. Never boring and a very good read, this book is an inside depth into Poland's free market reforms.

Comprehensive
With the search among investors for higher yield and with the asset class being one of the notable outperformers in the recent equity market upturn, Santiso's book on emerging markets (notably Latam) could not have arrived at a more opportune time. Generally speaking, it overviews the most significant empirical findings associated with emerging markets over the past two to three years, locating them within the context of a number of distinct themes. So if one is looking for a comprehensive treatment of the asset class, notably from an academic's perspective, this book is well worth the read. The editor's synopsis is accurate in terms of its overview of the main contents of the book.
The only problem I had with the piece is the editing job. There are a few spelling mistakes, misplaced uses of punctuation, and the odd sentence that must be read several times in order to realise its main import. I suspect if a proper editing job was undertaken in the main text (the footnotes are superb and very informative)the quality of the book would be enhanced significantly.
The book is probably of less use to practitioners but this was probably not Santiso's intent. In any case, thoughtful fund managers or equity strategists would clearly find the book informative, probably compelling them to conduct further readings in the literature noted in the footnotes.

Political Economy of Cotton South
Although this book is now more than twenty years old, it is still the best book on its subject. Wright has the ability to bring material together from a number of sources and from a number of points of view and make a coherent story. It is too bad that someone hasn't done the same for other regions of the country.

Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy : Foreign Economic Policies as Strategic Instruments
Published in Hardcover by UMP (01 August, 2000)
Author: Lars S. Skalnes
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

must read if interested in foreign economic policies
This is an eminently readable, and a persuasive account of the impact that military-strategic assessments have on foreign economic policies. The research seems carefully done, both from primary and secondary documents, and the author gives due consideration to alternative explanations. This is the only book I have seen that adequately describes the links between strategy and foreign economic policies with the broad historical sweep that this book has. It was particularly interesting in terms of the forces that shape foreign economic policies. For these reasons this book is a "must read" for anyone interested in the grand strategic role that foreign economic policies play.

The Practical Stock Investor
Published in Paperback by ARDI Research Press (February, 1997)
Author: Roger P Dooley
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $6.49
Average review score:

This book really helped me!
Concise, tight and complete, the book goes directly to the point about how the stock markets work, strategies for buying (and selling) stocks, and what you can expect in terms of the work, risk and reward. This is truly a book intended for people who really invest in stocks (or plan to invest in stocks) not a book of stories about famous investors. The coverage is not oversimplified--I would say it was intended for the "intelligent layperson." (And, yes, I can point to money I made as a result of suggestions contained in the book.)

Prices and Knowledge: A Market-Process Perspective (Foundations of the Market Economy)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (June, 1992)
Author: Esteban F. Thomsen
Amazon base price: $100.00

This is a Great Book
If you are all interested in the intersections between transactions costs economics, rational expectations, information economics and bounded rationality, this book is an excellent and explicit unravelling of the mysteries of how these concepts are intertwined. An excellent mind.
