Learn something interesting about the "FED"
An interview with co-author Edwin Vieira

Q. For many years, you have written scholarly pieces and lectured on monetary law and history, the Federal Reserve System, and so on. Why did you decide to write a novel on this subject?

A. Because I finally realized that Mary Poppins was right: "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." You see, when addressing various audiences-even those composed of people who were already somewhat knowedgeable about and interested in issues of money, legal tender, and political banking-I often observed how easily this material can become boring.
Of course, that was hardly surprising. The theory and history of money and banking are frequently convoluted, and not always simple to follow or understand. Although vitally important to all of us, much of this subject is anything but exciting, and some of it is rather tedious and even soporific. Add to this that it is difficult for anyone fully to appreciate the fundamentally corrupt nature of this country's monetary and banking systems without a solid foundation in political and moral philosophy, constitutional law, and American history. So I concluded that the challenge was not simply to lay out the facts in the traditional scholarly manner, and hope that the audience would take hold of them on its own. Instead, I had to approach the problem of public education from an entirely new perspective-one that would bring the subject to life, infuse it with vitality and color, and make it leap off the pages to grip the audience's hearts and minds.

Q. How could you accomplish that by writing fiction?

A. Because CRA$HMAKER is not really fiction after all. It is a story in which the Federal Reserve, monetary theory and history, constitutional law, free-market economics, and the political philosophy of a free society become, in a sense, the main characters. As they very well could be, if the world deviated just a little bit from its present course. CRA$HMAKER is an encyclopaedia of political and economic knowledge condensed into a pot-boiling tale designed to catch the readers' attention and hold their interest with an exciting and believable melodrama of modern political double-dealing, brimming over with romance, revenge, international intrigue, and all the vices and corruption that make contemporary Washington, D.C., the modern Babylon. It is a story in which (as the saying goes) the names have been changed-but not to protect the innocent, because none of the characters are any less sinful than the types of people in the real world whom they represent. Yes, the plot and protagonists are fictional-but the lessons readers will learn from them are entirely factual. Indeed, PIECES of EIGHT is the only book that can instruct you in more detail about this subject than CRA$HMAKER does. The difference is that PIECES of EIGHT educates by elucidating, CRA$HMAKER by entertaining. PIECES of EIGHT is the blueprint of a Ferrari, CRA$HMAKER a high-speed ride in one.
If I were just coming to this subject, I should read CRA$HMAKER first, to gain an overview, and then delve into PIECES of EIGHT, to get the specifics, footnotes and all.

Q. Who are the authors of CRA$HMAKER-Victor Sperandeo and Alvaro Almeida?

A. "Alvaro Almeida" is, of course, Edwin Vieira. It seemed appropriate when writing a novel-especially "a novel of love, death, and the Federal Reserve"-to use a nom de plume. The heroine of CRA$HMAKER, after all, is a strikingly beautiful Frenchwoman who...but I am getting off the subject, n'est-ce pas?
My co-author, Victor Sperandeo, is a real character in his own right. Among the Wall Street cognoscenti he is known as "Trader Vic", one of the few authentic modern Wall Street masters. He has written two very successful books on his philosophy and strategy of trading. So, he was a natural to collaborate with me on CRA$HMAKER-in which the plot centers on a crash of the Federal Reserve engineered by a brilliant Wall Street trader, and the political upheaval that follows. By the way, as with much else in CRA$HMAKER, the crash is not so very fictional either. It could be made to happen, if the right circumstances developed.

Q. With two such well-known authors, why is CRA$HMAKER not being widely advertised?

A. Victor and I always thought of CRA$HMAKER as something of an "underground" book, because we talk about things that no mainstream publisher-liberal or conservative-wants to touch with the proverbial ten-foot pole. CRA$HMAKER is unique. You have to go out of your way to hear about it, because you have to go out of your way to become knowledgeable about money and the Federal Reserve in the first place. We want readers willing to make a commitment, because our ultimate purpose is not simply to entertain, or even to educate, but to energize people into taking action to change America's monetary and banking systems while there is still time.

Q. How can someone purchase a copy of CRA$HMAKER?

A. In two ways. You can buy CRA$HMAKER on line, for $44.95 plus $5 shipping and handling, by visiting crashmaker (dot)com

Be warned! This is not a book for simpletons!
CRASHMAKER serves up page after page of legal, Constitutional and economic arguments for the gold standard and truly limited government.

In CRASHMAKER we sail the high seas of global finance and economics with ports-of-call in Constitutional and natural law, monetary history and policy, environmental wackoes, conspiracy theories and the role of morality in daily life. Frankly, to do a proper job of reviewing this tome requires an advanced education in law and economics. Undaunted, I will proceed with my own amateurish efforts. As the authors themselves put it, "CRASHMAKER challenges the reader - in its themes, its characters, even its style and vocabulary. But by design. For any people capable of self-government deserves and demands something more substantial than politically sanitized intellectual pabulum." (Pgs. iii-iv)

The book's TWO volumes and 1572 pages should not intimidate potential readers as the average chapter length is only 4.5 pages long. This makes any individual chapter a fast read.

At the end of this tome, the discerning reader will reach the inevitable conclusion that it took a great deal of education to write it. I assure you that when it comes to income taxation as well as monetary history and policy that they know the subjects inside out, upside down, forwards and backwards. To share just one example of their breadth of learning, they mention that Spanish churchmen such as Saravia de la Calle, Martín de Azpilcueta and Luis de Molina were the intellectual precursors to the Austrian School of Economics, and that Spanish theologian Francisco de Vitoria was talking about the unalienable individual rights and sovereignty of the people two centuries before Thomas Jefferson, [p. 818]. In fact, one of the authors claims to "not be disabled by his four degrees from Harvard." I predict that readers who enjoyed Atlas Shrugged will enjoy CRASHMAKER more as there are no long winded, 68 page speeches to wade through. The philosophical arguments are structured in the form of rancorous debates between opposing camps within meetings of the FED's Board of Governors, or economic conferences, simple conversation, talk shows and the like. This presents multiple sides of any given issue, avoids Ayn Rand's polemics, and makes for a much more interesting novel. Nevertheless, you can depend on the heroes {as well as the authors} to stand foursquare behind guns, the gold standard and limited Constitutional government. The real thing, that is.

Democracy and the Market : Political and Economic Reforms in Eastern Europe and Latin America

Excellent book
Adam Przeworski is one of the top five political scientists of the world. "Democracy and the Market" is amazing and should be read by everybody that wants to know why democracies last (or don't). Przeworski is probably one of the few writers that compare the situation in East Europe with the situation in Latin America. And he does it perfectly. A bit technical at times but a very contemporary work of Political Science. A must buy.

Sophisticated, profound, and interesting!!!!
Przeworski's writing is always penetrating. This is the best work that I've ever read in the literature of political economy and comparative politics. Although his approach is too much immersed in rational-choice, he knows the history of political philosophy. Although he is basically a Marx-oriented scholar, he correctly understand what neo-classical theories are lacking. Adam Przeworki is a rare intellectual who combine science with philosophy. is worth buying and worth reading although somehow technical.

Miller knows his stuff
A hot topic covered by someone who really knows the business. Tells the whole story, including the challenges. The complex topic of privitization is detailed and thought provoking. Takes the topic of international business to new depths.

Interesting and informative look at privatized companies
I enjoyed Miller's book because it examines privatization from a business perspective rather than the usual view of government agencies and multilateral organizations. He clearly describes the relative risks and rewards of dealing with former government owned firms and the strategies that produce the best results.

Great insite into the minds of the small business owner
This book will get you up and running fast if you are marketing to small businesses. A small business is different and after reading this book, you will know why. The author does a great job of describing the market and how to reach it effectively.

One of the things I learned is that you have to use a partner to reach the market. The small business market is just too big, broad, and variable to try to reach the market alone. Even big corporation use partners. The book provides case histories in the appendix that help to explain how to apply the ideas described in the earlier chapters.

The book is a quick and easy read that should provide any small business marketer with plenty of ideas on how to grow their business. If that's you, then buy this book.

Packed with Knowledge!
The small business market, the coveted target of many salespeople, is a myth. At least 85% of small businesses are not real sales prospects; they are one-man shops, paper companies and fly-by-night shows. John Warrillowprovides an invaluable service to salespeople around the world by explaining how to spot and eliminate this "sludge." He also tells how to segment viable companies to identify the best potential prospects. We from getAbstract strongly recommend that all salespeople read this priceless book.

realistic guide to the developing world
The book provides a hard hitting summary of both the risks and opportunities of the developing countirs. It also included a lot of solutions to the problems one faces. I liked the way in which it addressed issues from an operating company, equity investor's, and lender's perspectives. Nobody else does that. The anecdotes on various regions were entertaining.

Highly Recommended!
Former investment banker Jeffrey C. Hooke now carries out financial deals in the developing world. He describes the potential for doing business or investing in the world's 156 emerging markets. Hooke is realistic about the great risks - such as unstable governments in impoverished countries - but he highlights future potential. His book is a solidly researched and clearly written guide to assessing the business climate and deciding what types of products make the most sense in different developing countries. After an overview of the nature of emerging markets, why companies want to participate in or avoid these markets, and how to invest and make loans there, he looks at particular markets in Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. We [...] recommend this worthy book to those considering working or investing in emerging markets, but academics or readers interested in how business is conducted in foreign places may also be intrigued.

What MBA Students Say About the Book
This book provides an excellent framework for discussion on economic policy. It presents a stark realization of overall economic impact to people who are traditional profiteers. For those who only see "the two silver dollars", this book provides a starting point for a bigger picture view.

What MBA Students Say About the Book
I found the book interesting and especially found the study of entrepreneurism as an ideology unique and interesting. During review, I found opinions and topics that could introduce more discussion into the study of entrepreneurship. Two areas that I saw particularly intriguing are: 1) defining approaches to business as traditional or entrepreneurial, and 2) the introduction of law into defining entrepreneurship. These two topics bring further questions and consequently greater discussion. -- Chris Barker

The Standard!
Clearly the best book on Eurodollar futures and options. The book is a must for anyone involved in fixed income securities.

Highly recommended
Having just finished reading the author's treatment of bond futures in the 'Treasury Bond Basis,' I was happy to see that Burghardt was updating some of his material from the early 1990s on Eurodollar futures. The 'Bond Basis' was an excellent and thorough analysis, and 'The Eurodollar Futures and Options Handbook' follows the same trend.

He provides an excellent overview of the institutional details of Eurodollars and their uses. The book is at its strongest when dealing with issues of the convexity bias and also scores high by not neglecting important issues like the stub period. Perhaps my favorite chapter was on callable bonds and the extension/compression risk, which, while a little misplaced in a book on Eurodollars, still provided a very lucid explanation of the relevant issues.

With regard to options, the author touches upon some of the interest strategic combinations using serial and mid-curve options, but I feel that he could've delved a bit deeper in this part of the book. It's the only area in which I felt the book was somewhat lacking.

Having said all that, if you're looking to learn about Eurodollar futures, I can't imagine there's a better book out there. This is an excellent compilation of a number of Burghardt's research from the 1990s together with more recent updates.
