Help!: The Basics of Borrowing Money

Money For Nothing
This is a book that is good on a number of levels. We may extrapolate these layers of quality from an analysis of thetitle. First word "help" implies help, always a helpful concept. Next two words, "the basics" speak to the ignorant and slothful among us, such as me. I know I couldn't handle "the advanceds." Final two words "borrowing money," tie the bundle toegther. Who doesn;t want to borrow money? I do it, you do it, we all do it. Even the United States government does it. Even the African government does it. Especially the African government. In short, this a book you can judge by its cover.

Borrowing!: The Basics of Money Help
I was sitting in a Parisian night club one saturday, slowly consuming a glass of sherry and staring off into the moonlight. The waiter causually dropped the check on my table but, reaching into my pocket, I discovered a I had left my wallet back at the lodge. Desperately searching around my eyes chanced to fall on Mr. Gross'economic wunderkind, which I was reading on account of an unrelated fiscal shinanigan. Covertly I ripped a corner of a page and, employing my origami technique, transformed it into a miniature cricket. Placing the malevolent paper insect into my sherry, with the wrath of an avaricious panda I levelled expletives upon the waiter. The matter of my check sorted, I grabbed by coat and made off into the moonlight like oh so many expatriot romantics of the past. Thanks Mr. Gross.

The Original Ashkenazi American
The text opens with Robin's ganddad, Shmooley Gross, disembarking from the Mayflower. Life was not easy for the first dradle salesman in America. It was hard to establish a viable client base, while remaining true to his heritage. Shmooley eventually cut his losses and opened the first Chinese take out restaurant in America. It was called "Cathay Cookery." Then the Revolutionary War broke out. Business went south and Schmooley turned over the family business to his son, Schmooley II. The moral of the story is that Chinese food is awesome.

Politics,Money & Shtick
Politics, Money & Shtick should be required reading for any credit card holder or mortgage shopper. The book is informativeand easy to read. This book is an investment that will bringyou many returns. If you are serious in saving money this book is for you.

A MUST READ FOR ALL CONSUMERS
Jack Heselov provides a lot of insightfulness and information in his book regarding credit cards and home loans. The American Consumer can gain a good deal of useful knowledge by reading his book before buying or refinancing their home. Additionally he really nails the credit card companies and shows just how much they are really charging the average consumer who carries a balance on their credit cards. The interesting and humorous manner in which Mr. Heselov has written his book makes it easy and enjoyable to read.

A truly necessary and wonderful book!
I must say first that the format of "Politics" takes some getting used to. Mr. Heselov goes from giving examples of how the general public is being taken advantage of by credit card companies and the resulting "Credit Card Cancer" to hidden secrets about mortgage companies and loans (his own bailiwick, with over 42 years experience), to anecdotes which go from O.J. Simpson to Michael Milken. Sometimes all in the same page, without any clear boundaries separating them! However, once you acclimate yourself to his unique writing style and get your "sea legs" beneath you, "Politics" is a truly remarkable and illuminating read. Interspersed with the author's own experiences and insights, he paints a picture with seemingly random strokes of the brush about the general climate of Big Business and the political arena. But, like paintings that look like a collection of random shades and layers of paint up close but magically transform into a vivid image when viewed from afar, "Politics" leaves the reader with a clear picture of the forces that lay just beneath the waterline in the political and financial world. Read it once all the way through, then keep it around and read the selections in random order! It is simultaneously amusing and shocking, and guaranteed to entertain and educate. I am on the verge of buying a house myself, and I definitely feel better prepared to face the lending companies after having read this book. Thank you, Mr. Heselov!

Andy Buckram's Tin Men
It's funny, I've read hundreds of books over the years but this book has stayed on my mind since I was a kid. Andy Buckram's Tin Men was that wonderful mixture of fun, science, and luck. Andy was the kind of kid you always wanted to be. He was Boy's Life and Popular Science come to life. I'm sorry to see this terrific book is out of print. I still have my original copy, but I just can't find it anywhere. I'm afraid I lent it to some kid who never returned it. I can only hope it makes them appreciate reading as much as it did for me. Here's hoping for a reprint, and soon!

Part of my childhood
I've read the other 2 reviews below, and I have to admit I'm struck by the similarity of the memories and emotions I also have for this book. Every 2 or 3 weeks I check Amazon to see if by some quirk of fate, there might be a reprint of this book. Of course there isn't, and then the "grown-up" inside of me says "it was just a silly kids book, it couldn't have been all that great. It just caught your eye at a vulnerable moment in your childhood." But I have 3 kids now and I really think they would enjoy this book. I just might have Amazon go looking for an old, used copy. Weird, how books can do that to you.

A great book for boys of all ages
A wonderful book that is full of adventure, intelligence, a wry sense of humor (almost reminiscent of the Henry Reed books) and fun! Not my number 1 favorite - that honor is held in a tie by "Bonnie's Boy" a wonderful (out of print) story of a young boy and his dog (still makes me cry!) and Kin Platt's "Sinbad and Me" another treasure that's out of print for some inexplicable reason. However, "Andy" is in my top five, and like others here, one that I could never get out of my head. Some of the language and technology is dated, of course, but the characters are wonderful and the story is extremely engaging.

Thank goodness that I saved my copy from childhood - who could imagine it would still be with me now? (You should have heard my shout of joy when I found it amongst some old belongings a couple of years ago!!)

My kids are going to read it soon, and I'm looking forward to talking it through with them as they read it.

I would LOVE a movie on this book - a great idea and easy to do now with "simple" FX.

Good luck to those searching for it, it's worth the wait.

Excellent. Delivers what it promises.
WORD OF WARNING: I haven't actually put into practice the advice in this book, so I can't say whether the information is correct.

It is, however, presented in a VERY clear and understandable and logical manner. The book strikes an excellent balance between keeping it simple but NOT talking down. It assumes the reader is an intelligent adult (not a "dummy", if you know what I mean) who doesn't know much about the SBA or getting money from same. It then goes about giving you all the steps needed to understand what the SBA is, does and how you can take advantage. It doesn't make it sound "easy" but it does make it sound doable. The book is very detailed, which you want in such a book, but doesn't read like a textbook. It combines down-to-earth advice and experience, with some hard and fast rules and steps to success.

Although I haven't read every book on the subject, it's hard to imagine there is a better one out there. Highly recommended!!

The SBA Loan Book by Charles H. Green
Charles H. Green has taken the mystery out of commercial loan financing. With millions of dollars of SBA financing under his belt, he has converted that experience into an easy to understand, logical resource text in the SBA Loan Book. As a small business planning and development adviser, I find this publication as the best hands-on guide to the maze of commercial financing. Praises to publisher Adams Media Corporation for their ability to see the need of small business owners every where and for investing the time and money to produce this outstanding publication. Every Entrepreneur should own this book as should every new SBA loan officer involved in the process.

A Review For All Cycles
Just as life has clearly defined cycles, so does a small business enterprise and the SBA book by Charles H.Green depicts it clearly. Whether it's the start-up or expansion cycle, his book will show you how to plan for the loan, how to go through the document review, and how to enjoy the award of a loan. It walks you through the long and frightening process of getting a loan with sound advice and forms that inform and educate.

What if turned down? It shows the applicant why it happened and how to repair any damages to their business' ego. It very smartly says, "it's not personal it's business."

As antrepreneur dealing with capital formation on a regular basis, I recommend this book to all who know the trials and tribulations of "getting the money." You will find an answer to your situation, guaranteed.

Very Useful Book
No doubt, a very useful guide to methods of financing a college education. Also check out "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick, which clues you in about West Point, the college at which everyone is there on full scholarship paid by the government.

The best book ever written about saving for college!
This book unlocks the secrets of saving for college like the 401k plan did for saving for retirement. A real must for all families to understand. Makes a great present.

A fantastic summary of 529 plans
This book should be read by anyone planning to send a child to college. After reading this book, I started college savings accounts for my daughterin New York and New Hampshire. This is definitely the "sleeper" tax break which everyone should know about. Forget the pitiful Education IRA. The 529 plans are where it's at!!

There are so many ways to make money in real estate!
There are so many ways to make money in real estate! Since my first flipper property, which I made $8000.00 after reading "Flipping Properties" I have pocketed 7 figures and acquired 7 units - with no prior real estate experience! Bill Bronchick illustrates and delivers, step-by-step techniques, in an user friendly manner! "Financing Secrets" will forever change the way you buy and sell real estate.

Bronchick makes a complex subject easy to understand
Well, Bill Bronchick has done it again. Following his excellent resource Flipping Properties, he's taken the complex subject of creative real estate financing and broken it down into it's component parts and explained each one clearly and concisely in simple language anyone can understand. In the section What to Expect from this Book he says, "This book will show you how to finance properties with as little cash as possible, while maintaining minimum risk and maximum profit." And he does.

Covering such subjects as loans, mortgages, foreclosure, and working with lenders, he gives you the background you need for the later subjects of creative financing, hard and private money, getting involved in partnerships and equity sharing and the more creative subjects of lease options and owner financing.

While the book is geared primarily toward real estate investors, it is an excellent guide for any person considering buying a new home or considering doing some kind of creative financing with an investor or other buyer on a house they already own.
After reading it cover to cover (an easy task) every real estate investor should then add it to their library as a useful reference for many financing situations that may come up in this business.

Great stuff
I recommend this book. If you are just getting started or have a lot of experience... this book will help you. Full of great ideas and solid information to help the creative real estate investor.

Streetwise Seller Financing
If you are interested in seller financing, this is the book you must have. As a practicing attorney for 30+ years, specializing in real estate, I thought I knew it all but I even learned some things from Mr. Speed's book. He speaks to the issues facing seller financing in a way that is easy to understand and follow with real world solutions. This is a tough area with many dangerous curves but Streetwise Seller Financing addresses each issue providing valuable tips to assist the seller. I found the book to be of more help then many of the legal books due to the fact that Mr. Speed does not give you theory but just important facts on the correct way. I have dealt with many lenders in my years of law practice that could have used this book.

Every seller financer and note holder should read this!
Eddie Speed quotes the seasoned Texas banker who said, "The best time to worry about a loan is before you make it." Then he details how to do so. As a note broker, I can recommend this book to anyone considering seller financing. Whether you plan to collect payments for 30 years or you want to sell your note at some time in the future, this book will help you create a note that is more likely to be an asset you can sell instead of a life time headache. This book is a guide for the creation of the note and a reference for managing it. It even has helpful ideas for what to do when things go wrong during the life of the note. This book proves that good things come in small packages. Every note holder should keep it handy. I plan to.

This info is needed by all with Owner Financing !!
I was thinking of selling my home with Owner Financing. This book answered all of my concerns, and enlightened me on many that I was not even aware that I should be concerned about. I will use owner financing and not be concerned, knowing that I did it right on the front end. This will leave me with many options in the future if my needs were to change. Thanks, Mr. Speed for bringing me up to speed on owner financing.

This is the book most loan officers hope you won't read
I've been in the industry for over seventeen years and I can tell you - this is one of the only mortgage books that really tells it like it is. If your idea of shopping for a mortgage includes picking up the local papaer or yellow pages and calling a bunch of different lenders to ask "what's your rate?", you're in trouble. Read the info on pages 113-118 to see why.

Are you serious about shopping for a mortgage? Are you ready to set aside everything you think you know? Do you want a book that really "hits the nail on the head?" This is the book for you!

Still undecided? How about this? - We like this book so much that we bought 500 copies to give to our mortgage customers.

Do yourself a favor and put this book in your cart.

We DID save thousands of dollars on our mortgage!
My husband and I buy and restore old homes and we have always had to run the gauntlet of obtuse lenders and silly rules when it came to getting a mortgage. No longer! This book is filled with facts and information to help the consumer understand how the mortgage industry works and how to get it to work for you instead of the bank. Many thanks to Randy Johnson!

Good Book for Loan Officer Too.
As a new Loan Officer and looking for some real world experience i'm looking for some book with some real life advise and experience that i can gain deep knowledge about mortgage.
This book give a solid foundation and in depth knowledge that i can't get from other Loan Officer in our company.
I will definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for some in depth knowledge and practical way to learn this industry and save money and time for homeowner as well as for new loan officer.

i'm getting another one because the first book is fully hightlighted.

Step by step analysis with good tables in the appendix
This book has clearly stood the test of time. It is now in its 11th edition. My professor uses the 9th edition, and most of our class has a later copy. The author provides step by step help for novice financiers who want to learn mortgages, internal rates of return, and net present value calculations.
I would offer a word of warning to people who consider buying older versions in order to save money. I have the 8th edition. The concepts have not changed (although the assumed interest rates certainly have!). However, the chapters have since been rearranged and the questions in the back of the book are different. If you are using this book for a class you may need to at least have access to a newer version.

Great Textbook
Excellent book. Easy to follow, yet explores some complex topics.

Excellent real estate book for personal use or the classroom
This book is extremely insightful into the world of real estate. After having used it for two real estate classes at the MBA level, I decided to keep it for future reference, figuring most real estate books wouldn't come near this text. The problem sets at the end of each chapter are also very useful in giving the potential investor a good foundation in how real estate finances work.
