One of the best books ever written
Moby Dick used to be my favorite book. What more is there to say? Tolstoy is a master storyteller. If you like good writing, this book is for you. If you like Christian writing, this book is even more for you. This one will make a great gift.

Master of short stories
This book belonged to my father and he used to tell me stories from it when I was small. All parents should try to read this to their children - I remember being both mesmerised and confused by the stories : mesmerised because of their simplicity and flow, and confused because they led to deeper questions on society, humanity and God. Even if you are agnostic, you can read it for its human and literaray value.
After reading this you will have a hard time deciding whether Tolstoy is better as a novelist or a short story writer.

This book should be read by all.
What is there to say, TOLSTOY was a master of his craft? A read through this book will tell you all you ever need to know about the written word.

Brer Rabbit, Every Child's Pal
I give The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends to every new baby I know! As a parent, grandparent, early childhood educator and school board member, I am thrilled to find a book that meets my criteria for excellence. Karima Amin has skillfully combined the richness of the vernacular language with current concepts and expressions familiar to today's child. The colorful, active illustrations also draw us into the wonderful world of pranks, surprises, and fun. Sections on the African storytelling tradition, the Southern plantation world of Brer Rabbit, and the animals native to Southern USA deepen our learning and appreciation of the treasured tales we have in this lovely book. Brer Rabbit and Friends is perfect for lap reading, group reading, dramatization and learning to be a storyteller. Karima Amin's Brer Rabbit is truly every child's pal!

Great Book for Kids
This is a very good book that my son loves to read over and over again at night:) It not only is entertaining for children, but it teaches them a lesson.

A Magic Spring Tonic
November is a chilly, leafless month where I live in Western New York. However I just finished re-reading The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends as retold by performing storyteller Karima Amin, and it was like drinking a magic spring tonic. Instantly, I found myself transported to the warm, sun-drenched, dreamy world of Brer Rabbit and his myriad animal neighbors. The text of each story wraps and winds its way around the lush color illustrations by Eric Copeland, with a sprinkling of big, bold, bouncy exclamations of "Bookity-Bookity", "Splishy-splushy", and "Lippity-clippety" jumping out to grab your attention at just the right moment. The stories have a universal appeal because they reflect the "life lessons" we all struggle to learn when growing up - to pay attention, to get along with your neighbors, to use your natural abilities, to take time to laugh. Of course, these stories didn't appear out of thin air and the book includes insightful background on the historical context of these classic African American tales and their even-earlier African origins. The only way the publishers could have improved upon this well-done project would have been to offer a cassette or cd/book read-along package. That would have allowed readers the pleasure of following along as Karima Amin brings to life these charming oral tradition folk tales.

very well written
I read this book in two days, which is quite a record for me. It is a fascinating book, and John Bester is a very good translator.

An Eloquent Literary Masterpiece
Upon finishing this beautifully written novel, you may experience chills down your spine from the overwhelming power you feel in the words of Fumiko Enchi. Unforgettable in its subtlety and grace, "The Waiting Years," will haunt you with its portrayal of Japanese culture. I firmly believe that Enchi is the leading female literary figure of Japan. A TIMELESS PIECE OF WORK.

One of the Best Books I've Read
This book took my breath away. Fumiko Enchi describes the life of Tomo, who deals with her adulterous husband with amazing strength. In a complex marriage of love and hate, Tomo is sent to choose a concubine for her husband, find a husband for the other concubine he doesn't want, and worry about his affair with her daughter-in-law. While she may seem like a cold and unfeeling woman who is a stickler to tradition, Enchi shows the reader the gentle, compassionate side of Tomo. Tomo in the end is finally able to defeat her husband in an intelligent, almost classy manner.

What strikes me about the book is the way Enchi explains the motivations and fears of each of the characters. Even though I couldn't stand Tomo's husband, Yukitomo, at least I understood why he treated his wife so coldly. As in reality, everyone has different layers. The plot of the book is also interesting.

Do not wait to read the "The Waiting Years"!

Answered the questions my 4 1/2 year old asked before.
My 4 1/2 year old girl had questions about God that I could not find simple words to answer. This book had all the biblical answers in a simplified way. There are a couple of pages that I wasn't quiet comfortable with so I skip them. What I liked most is that at the end of the book it gave the biblical reference for all the given answers. I sure recommend this book for all kids.

Teaching parents as well as children . . .
What I enjoy about all of Kathleen Bostrom's little books for children is that they are wonderful on several levels. They're attractive for little children, filled with gentle answers to the tough questions kids ask, plus they have helpful sections in the back of each book to let parents know that the information they contain is Biblically sound.

Sweet and simple way to introduce God to small children
This book focuses on the questions little minds ask about God, and gives scriptures for the basis of each aspect of God that is given, so that when your toddler becomes a preschooler, you can have the references you need to answer tougher questions. It's a sweet and simple way to explain who and what God is to your toddler. Our children love it!

What to Read?
My friends and I are always recommending books to each other. We pull out our notebooks and PDAs and scribble down authors and titles. This sharing is an integral part of our friendships. When I open and browse in 100 One-Nightight Reads, I feel as if I have been talking to a good friend - and want to scribble down notes to myself.

This collection of essays recommending books that one can happily read in one night - is so much more than an annotated bibliography! David and John Major are sharing their own personal recommendations with us all. They are offering an intimate tour of the books that have mattered to them. Each essay has an individual approach and when you read it, you feel as if you have had a conversation with the author.

Sometimes I am reminded of old friends - books such as Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart that had a profound influence on my thinking when I read it twenty years ago; sometimes I am delighted to find a new book that I didn't know about - such as Louis Begley's Wartime Lies that must go on The List. Then it's nice to remember old favorites such as Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. One of the things I like about this book is that this is not a list of classic books that 'ought' to be read - its much more personal than that - broader in range - and much more fun. As I was reading, I found myself saying "Oh yes, I remember reading that,"- or "I must reread that!" - or "I must remember that one!"

Each essay elicits a specific response and this review would be too long if I wrote down all my comments. But the collection gives pleasure - a persuasive collection, that makes readers want to read more and might encourage those who don't read as much to pick up a book.

I think that teachers and librarians who offer guidance to young people would enjoy this book and find it useful.

The Students Perspective
100 One Night Reads is a fantastic piece of reference work. Virtually all the books I've read and written on for school over the past two years has been recommended by the Majors.
100 One Nights lets me find books that I know I will like, and that are universally excepted by teachers everywhere as being sophisticated literature. I haven't gone wrong once. Every book I've chosen from 100 One Nights has been well worth my time, and great material for the ensuing report. I've even started reading some of their suggested books just for the hell of it.

GREAT FOR BOOK CLUBS AND LITERATURE LOVERS ALIKE
How many times have you stood examining a book in a store or library, and wished for more information about the story or the author? Or how often have you presented a book to your reading group to persuade them to select your pick, but couldn't say much about it beyond "I heard this was great?" Now with John and David Major as your passionate and intelligent guides to 100 wonderful books, you can make that informed choice. For each selection, you get their succinct and witty descriptions, which are enjoyable before and after you read the book. If you love to read, I highly recommend that you buy this book. You will use it a lot, and never regret it.

101 Dalmatians

Amazing
this story is very amazing.i think this story is difference from another story.as the characters are 101 Dalmatians, the story is around them and another animals will help pengo to find his children.it has very meaningful .it teach us to help people when they have problems.it is a good chance for us toknow more about animals' world.the content is creative and wonderful.it is because the story is around animals' world and the backgound was very clear that a woman want to use the skin of Dalmatians' to make a fur.it is very wonderful

Delightful........
The book I read aloud to my 7 year old daughter is the 1956, 1957 Copyright with a yellow hardback cover with drawings of dogs on it. The illustrators are Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone.

This book is fun and exciting and is more enjoyable than the Disney cartoon version. You will be surprised by the Dalmation Perdita in this book. She is not what you expect. Also, you will not find out where the "101th Dalmation" comes from until the last two chapters unless you are very, very perceptive. I kept coming up with 100 total Dalmations until the very end.

This book is a must read for everyone; but, you will probably have to borrow it from your local library. This book needs to be rereleased.

The movies have nothing on this delightful story
We bought this audio book hoping to wean our young children (who enjoyed both movie versions of this book very much) off of movies and get them more interested in "real stories."

I have to tell you that this story far exceeded my expectations. Not only was it a fun story that my children enjoyed immensely, but one with subtleties, humor and bits of truth sprinkled throughout that had me listening and laughing right alongside them.

There are a lot of dog stories out there and I admit to being a dog-lover (well at least of big dogs), but this is a lot more than just a dog story. Certainly there's a great deal of humor, adventure and ... Dalmatians... but underneath all that you get many tidbits of truth that are applicable to life itself.

Martin Jarvis does a fabulous job in narrating this unabridged classic. Highly recommended!

***Good informative read***
I do not own this book but i have read it and it is very informative, has great rare photos! And i learned a lot about the Wright brothers, some things i should have proabably known before...If it weren't for them we would still be on the ground, or at least for a while longer.

The Wright Brothers is probably the best book ever written
Wilbur Wright, the brother with visions, invented the airplane along with Orville Wright, the brother who loved to tinker. Wilbur once said, " My brother Orville and myself lived together, played together and, in fact thought together." Wilbur and Orville persevered in their struggle against Mother Nature, the public opinion, and failed flights and experiments to fulfill their dream of making a flying machine.
This biography tells the story of the lives of the Wright brothers, from the time they were little boys tinkering with toys, to when they finally sold their marvelous invention to the United States government. This book shows how the airplane started out as a glider, then evolved into a plane that stayed in the air for 5 seconds, and finally into a plane that stayed in the air for an hour and 13 minutes. It also explains how getting the government to buy their plane was a difficult task because it had already spent $70,000 on another person who tried to invent the airplane. Luckily, the government said yes after the Wright brothers had built a better plane. This book also contains miraculous pictures of Wilbur and Orville's flights and failures.
I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys biographies or who wants to sit back and relax with a good book. This book is an all around good read but what especially sticks out is that it shows that if you put your mind to something you can always accomplish it, no matter how difficult the task.

Read Me
I read The Wright Brothers by Russel Freedman. This book describes the lives of our countries aeronautical pioneers,
Wilbur and Orville Wright, and how they invented the first true airplane. From the time they were children, Wilbur and Orville lived together, played together, worked together ,and even thought together. From their tiny bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. to the Kitty Hawk Island sand dunes. These two men defied known ideas about flight and built their own self-propelled craft that soared them to fame. Even today, a little over a hundred years after their first self-propelled manned flight, these two men are remembered for their courage. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in either the Wright Brothers or the history of flight in general. If it were not for these two, man would not have gotten of the ground!

A wonderful story
This book is one of my favorites - I've pulled it out and re-read it several times. I am fortunate to have a relative's old hardcover of it, one of the first editions. It is a wonderful story and really gets you into the times that the story was written. I've heard that the character of Hawke was based on Thomas Wolfe; I'm not sure if that's true, but the similarities are definitely there. For those who were wondering about the movie, it's not worth your time - I saw it on TV years ago and the movie wasn't true to the book at all. I wish Hollywood would make a movie of it now, I feel it's still a great story. I highly recommend this book.

The Youngblood Hawke Challenge
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Yes, it is a fantastic read, a gripping tragedy, with powerful characters and a realistic portrayal of New York and literary life in mid-20th Century America. But it is more: it is a writer's book. It is one of the best driving forces I have ever experienced. I mean, get you out of bed at 3 A.M. to write another 20 pages on your own manuscript, type of motivation. For years now I have had a page stuck to the side of my bookshelf here by my desk. It reads: "Can you meet the Youngblood Hawke challenge?"

Though I caution: push yourself this hard at your own risk.

Cheers,

Thomas

You will not be able to stop!
Warn everyone you know, that you will not be able to stop, reading Youngblood Hawke, that is.

A coach suggested that I read this book, as I love to read and write. From the first sentence I was hooked, and the richness of the characters, and the clarity of the descriptions (including New York in the early 1950s, Washington D.C. during the McCarthy trials) made this 900 page book impossible to put down.

There is much to love in this book, and I especially enjoyed the look within the writing process, and how each of the ficitonal character's books came to life. Then, how each book slithered through the publishing industry, the movie business, and sometimes back to New York and Broadway via the theatre.

I won't give anything away, but this was an incredible read from first page to last!

15 Minutes Alone with God
Many devotionals are too brief, being only a few paragraphs long. These daily readings are a few pages each, so they have more meat to them. Each devotion begins with a scripture reference followed by Emilie's application of the scripture, some suggested action steps, and a brief prayer. In the scripture applications, Emilie focuses on her personal experiences and experiences in the daily lives of most women. She encourages readers to apply God's principles in their roles as wives, mothers, friends, and professionals. I have recommended this book to many women, and I passed my copy along to a friend. I wish more devotionals followed this format.

15 min alone with God
This book was very uplifting and I really enjoyed it. I felt that my walk with God deepened. I liked that you can skip around and do which ever one you want to do. I did alot of journaling with the thoughts for action. I also liked that it had additional scripture that deals with the same topic.

Uses real life situations to show us God's love
This book has revived my quite time with the Lord. God has used her writings to bring me back to a desire to be with Him everyday for time alone. She uses real life, down to earth situations to show us where God is working and how we can better follow His ways. Excellent book!
