A good starting point to Digital Interactive Multimedia

Review Date: 2005-01-18
This book covers some new and interesting topics in interactive digital multimedia industry, such as Digital TV, Metadata, Digital Broadcast, Digital Rights Management, Ambient Multimedia, and so on. This book provides you a broad and comprehensive view about the current multimedia application and service industry. It's the first book I have ever seen to cover so many key words and state-of-art technologies in this field. It's really a useful book for both beginners and advanced readers.

Besides the key words above, the book also covers many critical standards, from MPEG-2/4/7/21 to DVB/MHP. However, the author efficiently combined the standards, theories and practical examples, explains these profound things in a extremely simple way, which prevents you from tedious and difficult studying of these standards.

The authors focused on both the technologies and the applications. The vivid examples, and the coherent technology clue, make the reader easily get involved into the scenarios in this book. In addition, so many useful links and references make you easier to go deeper into specific topics. Furthermore, a web site has been create for this book. You can find more interesting information there.

DTV and metadata

Review Date: 2004-10-15

One way to determine the level of growth of a research field is to assess the availability of relevant conferences, journals and books. In particular, the latter is a good measure of the maturity of the field, since they provide an overview of a critical mass of published work. In the interactive TV field, there been more than a few conferences and special issues in journals, but books are still scarce. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover the book "Digital Interactive TV and Metadata", which was written by a very active team of researchers from the Digital Media Institute at the Tampere University of Technology, in Finland.

The first part of the book (Theory) begins with a short overview of DTV standards and the respective applications types that are enabled by this basic set of industry standards. Next, the book surveys the fields of Web, multimedia, DTV, in order to provide an extensive overview of metadata standards, which is the core focus of this work. Having laid the background theory, the authors present the "Digital Broadcast Item Model", which they have helped define, in the context of the MPEG21 standard. The first part of the book closes with a discussion of the implementation requirements for metadata in DTV systems.

The second part of the book (Application) begins with an interdisciplinary analysis of DTV in the fields of business strategy, consumer behaviour and narrative, all of which are put in a metadata context at the end of the chapter. Next, the authors describe the application of metadata in several DTV fields, such as digital rights management, production, interactive TV content, and personalization. The book closes with a discussion of a few innovative applications and future scenarios for DTV.

Overall, it is a rather accessible technical book for DTV and metadata. It is suitable for researchers and developers of DTV systems. In a field that is in constant growth it would have run the risk of missing recent developments, but the book is coupled with a web site that offers additional and up-to-date information (http://www.digitalbroadcastitem.tv/). Moreover, the website offers complementary slides, handouts and exercises that can be used for teaching a DTV and metadata module in university programs.

Ms. Carlson's book, Digital Media in the Classroom is a breath of fresh air in this world of techno-babble and deliberately dense teaching materials. Taking the students (and their instructor!) on a step by step journey through the world of digital tools and applications, Ms. Carlson has provided the classroom teacher with a clear, concise, and easy to follow map through the maze that has come to be known as Technology Education. Without making the reader feel like a complete techno-idiot, concepts are clarified, techniques demonstrated, and student efforts are validated in a relaxed yet efficent manner. Brava Ms. Carlson! Many Thanks!

Digital Media in the Classroom should be in the hands of every teacher in every subject K-12. We are in the 21st century and to connect with students today it is critical we engage students with digital tools. Technology should not exist in isolation from the core courses and Gigi Carlson clearly outlines how we can bring content "alive" in every subject. The book provides a wealth of examples which can be easily implemented in any classroom. Digital Media in the Classroom will bring a bit of magic into any class by taking any static national or state standard and making it "interactive" for you and your students.

The Current State of the Art in DTM
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-19
The concept of digital terrain modelling (DTM) began about fifty years ago. The original concept was very simple, the three dimensions of each point were simply put into a database. Over time the technologies of using the data, collecting the data, and the storage of the data has developed into ever more complex forms.

This book has chapters on each of these general areas. It is truly a comprehensive mathematically rigorous guide to DTM as it exists today.

In addition to the chapters on producing the various kinds of models, there are a couple of chapters on applications to illustrate the kinds of things that are being done with DTM.

The book was written by three Ph.D. professors who now teach at the University of Calgary, one of the universities in the lead of DTM.

I read the book and found it very easy to follow. I am interested in the subject because

I am a retired air force pilot, and the concept of disaster management is a lifetime experience.

The book gives a very wide and general idea about the subject of disaster management, it gives a generic disaster management plan, then some specific plans for the telecom industry.

The case studies cover a wide range of applications. I found them very useful

I recommend this book for every manager, even those outside the IT profession

Disaster management explained

This book is written to technical as well as non-technical readers. Thus the text balances the technical issues with the administrative, financial, and managerial issues. This theme is punctuated by:- - Presentation of a thorough and detailed discussion of the theories of disaster management - An integrated use of real-world examples throughout the text - Use of feature articles material from leading telecommunications companies & common carriers, highlighting the issues surrounding disaster & crisis management, in a broad spectrum of telecommunications organizations - Case studies illustrating how actual disasters were detected, studied, confronted & successfully controlled (or otherwise) - Lessons learned from the different examples & case studies presented The book explains the different theories of disaster management, and after that discuss its applications in the telecommunications, Broadcasting and computer systems. Thus it will be useful to all those who are concerned with disaster management as a subject. The book relies heavily on case studies to explain the ideas presented in the general presentation. A special section is devoted to the presentation of 12 real-world case studies, in the fields of telecommunications, Radio/TV broadcasting and computer systems in addition to a step-by-step solution of another two case studies. Yet throughout the book 12 other case studies, about disasters that I have personally encountered and managed, are presented

The main idea behind the stress given to case studies is to make the reader think about the case, and then to arrive at an understanding of the WHYs and HOWs, before reading the analysis. This concept is presented in the following format:- 1- Background Information: (Present state) 2- Problem Faced:(Symptoms & Early warning signs) 3- Action Taken:(assuming no previous knowledge of Disaster Management) 4- Discussion: Given in the form of questions that leads the reader logically & systematically to discover what went wrong & what should have been done. 5- Analysis: This presents, in a way, the most probable course of action that should have been taken & a clarification of the cause of the trouble.

Finally, this book documents the experience that I gained through working for more than 40 years in the field with the United nations (ITU), telecommunications, Broadcasting and computer organizations, where I faced a lot of disasters that I had to detect, identify, analyze, and solve. Most of the time I was successful thank God, while in some cases I was not that fortunate. It is hoped that this book will enable the reader to profit from my experience, and avoid those places where I stumbled.

I recently ordered the text book, "Microsoft 2007 Discovering Computers" for a University class I am taking. The book came the very next day and was in "new" condition. The book would have cost me $102 "new" on campus and I purchased it for only $5, plus shipping. I have recommended your site to many classmates and will definitely use you for future textbook purchases.

Since I'm majoring in Information Resources Management, this book has tremendous impact on how to manage information effeciently and effectively. The seven rules illustrated in the book gave a clear picture on how to be an "IT Star". The core message of the book contains in the first part of the book. This is where the author explained the general overview of what the book is all about. By reading the first part of the book, readers will understand the concepts and approaches that are used in other parts of the book. For instance, what distiguishes IT Stars and IT Laggards and why IT Laggards always failed in obtaining their corporate goals. For future IT managers I would highyly recommend this book to be read for superior IT performance.

Essential part of your business library
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-07-01
An easy, informative and enjoyable read (not something I often say about a 'business book'!) Paula demystifies the whole business of PR, and shows you the many options that you have to promote your business. The A-Z style means you can dip in and out of the book whenever you are ready to add a new ingredient to your PR mix, to check up on something new, or to check that you're doing your current PR effectively. The detail given on each element gives you enough information to decide if it's something you want to do, and how to start.

I also enjoyed the case studies - which showed that there is no 'one size fits all', and you can pick and choose the elements that you want to mix in for your business. This is definitely a book I will be picking up and referring to for some time to come, and I'm so glad I got it!

PR for the Uninitiated
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2009-06-19
This book is set out as an alphabetical list of PR subjects from having the motivation for doing some PR to every kind of PR opportunity, technique and tool that I could think of. This creates the one flaw I can see in that the book does not give you a strategic overview or plan for how to go about using PR for your business.

That is a small point against a great book. I loved the fact that I could go through the whole book in an hour or so. I love the comprehensive index page and the alphabetic approach because it makes the book easy to navigate. I love the fact that it is a practical, no nonsense read where you can just pick out bits that are going to make the biggest difference to you.

Having been researching and looking into PR for my business for a while now I didn't expect to find a whole lot of new material. In the main I was correct in that assumption although I did find a few juicy gems that I had not considered. One particular example would be the use of PR Buddies, a concept that I had not thought of and is already paying dividends for me after seeing it in Paula's book.

Even if I didn't find a whole lot of new techniques what I did find was a book that is worth keeping to hand as a reminder of all the things you could do and how to go about them. I can see myself keeping the book in the office to browse at odd moments and either refresh myself on what I should be doing or finding things to try out with respect to my own PR.

Whilst I started with the fact that the book does not give you an overall strategic plan and highlighted that as an issue I have to add the key benefit of the book is the fact that it does not give you a strategic plan to follow. In essence you get the opportunity to pick up the tools and techniques that will work for you and create your own plan. This book is a must read for anyone in business that needs to do their own PR and is looking for a variety of activities that will make a difference to their business.

This book covers all of the key areas at a level that is appropriate even for seasoned Documentum professionals. Additionally, I found the practice exams at the end to be both challenging and great preparation for the content management foundations exam. Also, this book serves as a good reference guide, and I found the example DQL queries to be very useful. Moreover, I appreciated the quality of the writing - as the book was written in such a way that it helped make the topics easy to undertand. Thanks Pawan!

Passed E20-120 with great score. As intermediate-level Documentum
professional I found the E20-120 exam very challenging and your book was
enormously helpful during my prep time. All in all, I have found your set of questions very brain teasing, rich and well thought.

Being under pressure to deliver and meet company's deadline it was essential to effectively bridge conflicting demands (work, family) and outperform when it is needed the most. Your book evidently boosted my performance. Furthermore, your book revealed many bottlenecks in my knowledge and significantly helped me to eliminate them, one by one, in time effective way. What I fancied was your clear, concise, focused writing style and the content of the book structured in manageable and digestible chunks. Of course, it is an extra effort to study in the evening but it pays off and now I am motivated to go
for E20-405.
Pawan, keep up the good work!

This book is a great introduction and overview of the Documentum platform. I wish I had something like this available when I started working with Documentum years ago. It not only introduces Documentum concepts to beginners, but it also serves as an excellent study guide for those wanting to become Documentum certified. It can also be an excellent reference book for even experienced Documentum users and administrators.
It is easy to read, with helpful self test questions at the end of every chapter.

Provides a complete readiness assessment framework
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-01
The heart of this book is a readiness framework that blends assessment, strategy and tactics and project planning. The focus is on business and customer value.

I like the way the book starts, with a look at the big picture, defining your goals, and complete look at all stakeholders. The beginning also introduces e-business models, the readiness framework itself and a quick sanity check to test your readiness.

This is followed by a more detailed look at the "eBiz Readiness! Framework" and its major parts: stakeholders, components and enablers. Also addressed are knowledge management, trust and technology, all of which are interwoven into the fabric of e-business. I especially liked the framework metrics, which include benchmarking, customer and business metrics, and how to manage the metrics as indicators.

What makes this book practical is the map given to applying the framework for implementation of e-business processes and systems, and once implemented, how to effectively manage using an evaluation framework. The evaluation framework covers both small- and big-business perspectives in the form of stakeholder assessments. Also addressed in detail are trust services (perhaps the cornerstone of e-business), security, and related issues.

Another aspect of this book that I liked very much is the coverage of the e-business stakeholder model and governance, which spans topics such as globalization, socioeconomics and your defined market. This sets the book apart from those that seem to focus on technology without a regard for the bigger picture.

This book is an invaluable resource to both business planers and IT because it balances the business and technical issues, both of which are addressed, in assessing e-business readiness.

Finally, someone has started to 'de-mystify' what e-business is! The foundational material yields a discerning insight into the concrete necessities of e-business whether large or small. The stakeholder model details what components are needed and exactly how the elements of e-business fit together, and also what you need to be successful - the book gives you proven, effective yardsticks to measure where your business is and where your business is going! An excellent read! I highly recommend it. Jutla and Craig are groundbreakers!
