Book Overview

Review Date: 2002-07-01
Only half of working Americans admit they have thought about saving for retirement, and many of those who do try to save, don't know if they are setting aside enough to support themselves in old age. How, then, can employees, their employers, and the public sector boost old-age financial security? The contributors to this volume--economists, financial advisers, and housing and benefits specialists --argue that a strong retirement income system requires attention not only to assets conventionally dedicated to retirement purposes such as pensions, but also to the broader determinants of retiree wealth including housing, health, longevity, and intellectual capital.

This book outlines key problems involved in reducing financial risks in retirement, and then it goes on to propose fresh solutions. These include cash-balance pension plans that combine features of traditional defined benefit pensions and increasingly popular defined contribution plans. Other novel approaches discussed include reverse-annuity mortgages permitting people to benefit from the value of their homes without actually selling them, various forms of annuities, and long-term care insurance. A framework chapter sets the stage by examining what retirement planning can be expected to accomplish and how planning reduces risks by hedging, insuring, and diversifying. This book should be required reading for all who seek to strengthen retirement decision-making and old age protection.

Olivia S. Mitchell is Executive Director of the Pension Research Council and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance at Boston University, P. Brett Hammond is Manager of Corporate Projects at TIAA-CREF. Stephen Zeldes is Benjamin Rosen Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University.

An Inquiry into Well-Being and Destitution

Excellent starting point for studies in development

Many will probably notice the similarity to "Development as Freedom," the book by '98 Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. Prof. Dasgupta has a very definite philosophical structure to analysing well-being and destitution, and he never loses sight of that. Both Sen and Dasgupta pay a lot of attention to analysing the moral principles of rights and how these can be used to understand well-being. However, I greatly prefer this book to Sen's, because Sen's is a series of lectures and this is a cohesive, well-connected book (545 pp.).

From the principles of rights, and their role in well-being, Dasgupta branches out to the whole universe of development in a refreshingly calm, non-ideological way. Moreover, the bibliography in this book is very good: if you are following the notes in the text, D. points the way to a wide range of intelectual opportunities.

Excellent overview of capital gains taxes.

Excellent overview of the tax consequences of investment decisions. Can't imagine an investor not getting some new insight into investment taxes after reading this book. Occasional citing of Federal Tax Law gets a little sticky, but does not detract from its overall value. A must read for novice and experienced investors.

Every taxpayer should read this book and see how the government has always cheated taxpayers into beleiving they are required to file an income tax return. See how our rights to have property and privacy are violated by a well oiled government scam. Amazingly truthful! Schiff's books are the only tax related books that show you the law. No other book dares to when the subject is income tax. If you think goverment was on your side, this book will awake you up! It shows how americans have been fouled for a very long time.

Traces the origins and early development of TIAA-CREF and describes the operating philosophy and practices of an organization that holds in trust the retirement hopes of more than one million participants from non-profit educational and research institutions.

...

The book describes the organizations struggles with the strictures of state and federal laws designed to regulate commercial life-insurance companies and other, more conventional, for-profit financial institutions. It deals candidly with the conflicts over such issues as investment strategy, governance, state insurance regulation, sex-distinct annuity rates, the perceived paternalism of noncashable annuity contracts, and the need for broader ranges of investment options. It traces the landmark modifications that TIAA-CREF introduced in response to the changing financial and regulatory environment.

"More than just a book about a company. It is the story of a movement that has transformed the way we think about and plan for retirement." -- Dr. Clifton R. Wharton, Jr., current CFO of TIAA-CREF.
