Replaces The Art of Syrian Cookery - the best in Syrian food
This book is available and can be ordered immediately. The last edition was printed in December, 1996. It won first place in the nation by the National Federation of Press Women out of 1700 books submitted. The author, Helen Corey, has updated and included in this book all the recipes of her best seller The Art of Syrian Cookery. It also includes additional recipes and photographs plus a descripton of the mores of the people of the Middle East. One of the reviewers, Michelle Plummer, Professor of Nutrition of Indianapolis, In. writes "Recipes are bursting with flavor as Helen makes them easy to prepare with her fail-proof methods, adapting them to the American kitchen. She tells you what basic ingredients to buy and work with them for the most dazzling results. Considered one of the most popular teachers of Middle Eastern cuisine, Helen prsents elegant plate presentations allowing many cooks the pleasure of preparing vegetables, meats and desserts for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike".

I have tried other Middle Eastern cookbooks, but Helen Corey"s recipes are by far the best and have made me an expert in cooking these foods. MCPfood@aol.com, Professor of Nutrition, Sept. 9, 1999"

Perfectly authentic and well written
Each recipe is explained in detail and if an ingredient is uncommon she explains where to get it and what it is. She writes the recipes so that the end result turns out wonderfully. I grew up eating this food in Canton, OH and her recipes taste just the way the old Syrians would have prepared it. I was so happy to find a cookbook so true to the old world style. There are meat recipes as well as vegetable based cuisine, desserts, and even how to make the old Syrian cheese usually served with breakfast. It is a concise, great book and I wish more people knew how to prepare meals like this.

Ataturk: the Rebirth of a Nation

Amazing,Heroic,Legendary
Unfortunately we know very little about the history of Modern Turkey and the Turkish people in general. I would even say all we know is unsubtantiated ...in general against Turks. This wonderful book of outstanding historian Lord Kinross is telling the real story behind the modern Turkey and the avant-guard philosophical foundations that created this modern republic out of ashes of a country which was torn off completely by wars followed one another. This book is clearly proving us that Ataturk is not only the most important political leader of our century but also may be some centuries back and some centuries forward yet to come. Any person from the developed Western societies who are serious about learning something about a nobel nation such as Turks and their genius humanitarian leader Ataturk, this is the book to read.

Every hero has a human side
I am Turkish. So I have read lots of things about Ataturk throughout my education. But it was all about the events like wars, revolutions, treaties but not the feelings about this great man. Now I understand some of his moves better.

I think everybody can learn something from this book but especially people of Turkey should read it to learn what kind of events our nation lived on our way to freedom and what kind of differences a leader can make.

amazing
having searched for a book on this leader but finding it out of my price range i happened to find a copy for £10 in Turkey of this book. It is a brilliant read. A man forgotten in the west but so properly idolised in turkey. Now I understand what all the fuss is about. This character is no Mussolini, Stalin or other jumped up tin pots but a man of the most amazing integrity and insight. It is amusing the way Lloyd George spend his whole career trying to undermine him but in the end with the defeat of the grekks fell from power due to his integrity. A tear passed my eye reading about the death of this hero and I certainly felt that i understood a bit more the respect and emotions theTurks have towards him.

More than an atlas.
Not just maps, but a concise enclopedia of the North American Indian, with brief but comprehensive coverage of history, culture, languages, lifeways, the impact of the European explorers and the subsequent deterioration of native American life.
As conflict characterized the Indian experience in historical times, wars are treated in considerable detail, with basic sympathy to the natives' position but with a welcome avoidance of stereotyping and sentimentality.
With Facts On File's usual excellent maps, bibliography, and index, and useful appendices with a chronology, historical and contemporary locations, reservations, museums, and more.
Essential for anyone interested in the Indian experience, and highly recommended for the reference shelf of the general reader.

Great for classroom use - a real bargain
It's actually hard, finding good books on American Indian topics that work in the classroom (I teach at a medium-sized public university). There are plenty of out-of-date books. Lots of terrible "pc" books. But few that actually convey information in an attractive and interesting fashion. This is definitely one of the latter type. The maps are clear, the illustrations accurate, and the amount of information presented is surprising. There's a tremendous amount of material packed between the covers of the "Atlas"---and it's a good deal more than a collection of maps. This is one of those books that some students---especially those planning on becoming teachers---may actually decide to keep. My own copy is well-worn from use, and often consult it to clear up questions both large and small. The best comprehensive source I've seen for this kind of money.

well done
Excellent reference handbook and easy to read. 5 stars.

A Must for those interested in freedom.
An outstanding look at the unending chain of abuses that are heaped on us by our government and the obvious, but tragic results. The Ballad of Carl Drega is a collection of articles and notes from 1994 -2001 by the award-winning Libertarian columnist Vin Suprynowicz. Carl Drega, Gary Watson, Donald Scott, Peter Williams, and the victims of Ruby Ridge and Waco are the martyrs in the raging War Against Freedom. This expose goes where no others dare. Vin exposes the War that has been declared on our rights in his essays on Taxes, Western Land Grabs, Environmentalism, Gun Laws, Vaccinations, and the "Mandatory government youth propaganda camps, still known to most as the 'public schools'".

He challenges you to focus on the victims' plight and leaves you wondering how on earth there are not similar "last stands" on a regular basis. Unfortunately, I fear that there will be many more Carl Drega's before Vin's next book is released.

I have given this book my highest recommendation and consider it a must-read for freedom lovers, patriots, libertarians, journalists, and concerned parents. If you don't like to loan out your favorite books, you might be wise to order more than one copy.

"The Best Book I Have Ever Read in My Life. Without a Doubt"
It would be very fair to say that "The Ballard of Carl Drega" is one of the most revealing and insightful books to be published in years. Authored by Vin Suprynowicz, one of the world's most celebrated and syndicated libertarian writers of the century, this title leaves no stone unturned.

For those of you who believe that a "war on freedom" is in the works, this title will not only reaffirm your belief but will show you how it's ten times worse than you originally thought. Unlike many books which are simply based on hearsay, this title cites the cold, hard facts in excruciating detail. You can expect to see examples and be pointed to verifiable sources, not just the philosophic ramblings of the author.

This book is unrelenting attack on everything you thought you knew. From building codes to taxes, this book explores the cold, dark world that is our government.

When you have finished reading this title, your outlook on life will be changed. The title is that powerful. If you buy only one book this year, that book should be "The Ballard of Carl Drega". Eight died on that bridge in Lexington back in 1775, how many will it take this time?

A Must Read if you value freedom
This book is so important and so well written, I am buying copies of it to give to everyone I know. Vin exposes the underside of America and shows plainly how America is a defacto police state. He deals with facts not fiction and provides another side to some of the news stories we have heard in the press. Also he deals with stories that will never be heard in the "mainstream" media. Well done Vin. Molon Labe

He was called "The Baseball Photographer," the man who put his camera away after the World Series and didn't unpack it again until Opening Day, but Conlon's work is not that simple. Though he had no artistic pretense, his images are certainly works of art, and if his subject, on the surface, was the "National Pastime," his focus was really on capturing depth of character; his characters just happened to be ballplayers. Conlon's stark, vivid, black-and-white photographs caught an era that spanned the turn of the century to the second World War, and some of the moments he froze remain breathtakingly stunning: the sad eyes of Babe Ruth in deep close-up, the hope in the smile of a rookie Lou Gehrig, the dignity of Walter Johnson, the impishness of Casey Stengel, the burdens of Honus Wagner, the arrogance of Nap Lajoie and Tris Speaker, and the concentration of Christy Mathewson. This is a magnificent collection, one capable of superimposing the past onto the present; it is visually arresting--and alluring--like the game itself. --Jeff Silverman

Historically important snapshot of baseball
Were Charles Conlon still alive, I would track him down and kiss his feet for capturing in such vivid detail the historic giants of baseball. The book features remarkable photos of the greatest baseball players of most of the first half of this century. Suitable for framing, the photos typically depict individual players and small groups, often in game action. The well preserved photographs provide an important window on a truly beautiful game and its players in an era when outfield fences were optional, and a "baseball club" was just that. My favorite of Conlon's gems shows Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner gripping his bat. Under his fingernails is Pennsylvania coal dust. His chipped, oversized piece of lumber looks unwieldy by today's standards. And his sinuous forearms are testament to the power that we remember him by. Other photos are paired to show the dramatic impact of age and the outfield sun on players of yesterday. Picture Wes Chandler spunky at 25 and then battle weary at about 50 and you'll understand why so many players strive so hard for a moment in the sun: they want to enjoy it before it's all gone.

Oh Magnificent!!!
The centerpiece of all baseball photography books. You read about them. You marvel at their feats and accomplishments. So few photographs exist about them. What do they look like? Charles Conlon did history a service by just following his hobby. Truly a magnificent masterpiece. Not just photo's...History! We are all so very lucky to be blessed with such a collection. For those interested, there is a collection of hundreds of baseball cards featuring the photographic genius of Conlon. They are out of print now, but can still be found. The Conlon Collection from the Sporting News. You owe it to yourself to check it out. You owe it to yourself to own this book.

The photo of Wally Pipp is priceless.
As great as the photos are the text is almost as good.

Very refreshing; especially in the winter and in light of $250 million player contracts.

Barrow's Boys: A Stirring Story of Daring, Fortitude, and Outright Lunacy

One of the best books of its kind
Simply put it's a great book. "Barrow's Boys" is filled with amazing stories of exploration and consequent adventure in the first half of the 19th century. The title figure of Barrow is himself a rather uninteresting and, at least to me, disagreeable chap who takes a rightful place in the far background of this book. Barrow's importance is as the man who green-lighted the numerous British explorations detailed in Fleming's book.
Most were in search of the elusive Northwest Passage, which took many a ship into the harrowing Arctic environs. This provides many of "Barrow's Boys" most captivating stories as ships, captains and crews battle the elements. The effect of extreme cold, severe Arctic storms and seemingly endless dark winters are hard to imagine. Fleming, to his credit, helps nudge the reader's imagination. One of his primary tools, and indeed a key to the success of the book, are the copious logs left behind by ship captains. What a treasure chest of primary documents that Fleming takes full advantage of.
In addition to fighting the bitter cold, explorers challenged opposite elements in Africa in search of rivers and cities. Besides having to negotiate extreme dessert or jungle heat, explorers had to ward off myriad diseases and pass though the lands of hostile natives, often while seeking their help.
It's all compelling stuff and Fleming has a writing style that never imposes itself on the stories but helps highlight elements of them.
One of the highest praises of a history book is that it inspires the reader to want to read and know more. Well, through "Barrow's Boys" Fergus Fleming has done precisely that.

"Send forth the best ye breed"
That line from a Kipling poem kept coming to mind as I read this book. The 30 major explorations that are chronicled here beginning in 1816 and ending with Leopold McClintock's expedetion of 1857, all however pre-date Kipling. Nevertheless the sentiment remains and it is very clear that BARROW'S BOYS - mostly Royal Navy officers who were "mothballed on half-pay" and "yearned for something" [to do] - were both some of the best in 19th century England and were indeed the right people to send forth. As the book's subtitle says they were sufficiently daring and had ample fortitude and there was the odd element of outright lunacy. The latter is best illustrated by Gordon Laing (the madman of Timbuctoo) and the hero John Franklin - better known as the man who ate his boots! Both men are subjects of appropriately titled chapters in this book.

The man behind these adventures, "the father of exloration" as Fleming calls him, was John Barrow, 2nd Secretary to the Admiralty from 1804 to 1845. He was the guiding force for the expeditions; organizing, equiping, and generally administering their every detail. Where the voyages went, who led them, what crew and supplies were needed, these were all Barrow's decisions. Fleming is quite plain in stating that although "Barrow inevitably plays second fiddle to his explorers" both in history and in his book, he nevertheless "remains the driving force behind his minions' more thrilling exploits."

Barrow's character is summed up as one of "ambition, intellect and remorseless application." Fleming highlights the many explorations Barrow sent out as part of his personal quests which he vicariously satisfied through his men. In pursuit of the source of the Niger River in West Africa and the Northwest Passage through the Arctic, Barrow spent money and material and sent men with not-quite reckless abandon but with a definite unwillingness to accept defeat. The remorselessness is shown in that failure and loss were simply reasons to sweep aside the unsuccessful leaders (if they returned alive) and equip another expedition to try again.

As the book goes on we see the seemier side of Barrow's ambition. The man was "determined to make his name somehow." After the multiple unsuccessful attempts for the Northwest Passage between 1818 and 1827, by John Ross, William Edward Parry, and John Franklin (who died trying), Fleming is at his most critical when he says the following about Barrow: "Perhaps no man in the history of exploration has expended so much money and so many lives in pursuit of so desperately pointless a dream."

Britain's long tradition of celebrating it's failures and making heroes out of victims dates from before these events right up to Dunkirk in WWII. This is strengthened by the idea of noble sacrifice for God, King, and country. The first man to go down with his ship was undoubtedly an Englishman. This goes a long way to explain why, even after so many failures and stories of pitiless deaths in the deserts of West Africa and the icy North of the Arctic, Barrow was allowed to continue sending men forth. Even more significantly there were always volunteers ready to test their mettle as the best of England's breed.

One of the best histories written
Fleming is an excellent writer, period. The pages just fly by. One could almost place this book in the Humor section. Unlike most historians, he is quick to judge (and smear) a protagonist. John Barrow, the backbone of these stories, is continually chided. He makes great use of journal entries, many of which were written under great stress--could many write in that wordy, superfluous 19th-century prose while holed up in Saharan Africa? Not likely.

A good book, but not a great book
I didn't really want to read another war book, but a friend convinced me he thought this was the best one ever written. However, I came away from it thinking it wasn't as good as "The Forgotten Soldier". The last chapter about the battle over the Moro river was just as good. However, the depth of the first three chapters I felt was diminished by the author's sense of humor and his tendency to exaggerate. For example, the dying of the inscrutable A K Long - taking out his pipe for a smoke and a book to read when he was so seriously wounded, calm in the midst of terror - struck me as unrealistic. In sum, this was a good book but I would say, not really memorable.

An Anti-War War Read
This book was a great surprise for me. I picked it up at a local library because I saw the name Mowat and thought, "Funny, Isn't he a Canadian naturalist? What's he doing in the History section?" What followed was a fascinating voyage of war, adventure, hilarity and, ultimately, tragedy and pain. Walking into the experience of WWII with a completely innocent demeanor, anxious to get into a fight, this brilliant writer has many funny and almost fatal false starts. When the fighting gets serious, the glib descriptions of his units treacherous challenges are positively riveting. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. If you like your war personal, exciting and honest, get this book to a comfortable chair and be prepared to not move for a night and a day. A brilliant book by a Canadian national treasure.

A Canadian Classic
Undeniably the best war memoir written by a Canadian who served in the Second World War. The book chronicles Mowat's experiences in 1943 as a participant in the invasion of Sicily and Italy, and in classic Mowat style captures both the stark reality and lighter side of his experiences. Mowat also wrote a history of his unit--one of the first books he published, and which was later revised (and is somewhat difficult to find at the moment)--entitled The Regiment.

Wow!
Wow!

That is all I can say. This book is the one that proved that good visuals do matter in history books. Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight has it all: types of armor, weapons, historic data of where and when the weapon was used... but most important of all , VISUALS! Hundreds upon hundreds of page-size, full color photos of actual suits of armor, not crude drawings and diagrams that other books on the subject offer.

Also, I have to say that the texts is incredibly well-written an precise, the data is vast and accurate, and all the sources are quoted perfectly. This is the definitive book on the subject.

Incredibly awesome!
I have forever been a fan of medieval arms. Most books on the subject simply do not give them justice. They go into very simple, sometimes non-acurate descriptions with little details (like one book I read saying a single-handed sword weighed as much as a bicycle - WHO's bike is only 2-3lbs, I have no idea!). David Edge is curator for the Wallace Collection of weapons and armor, and if anyone whould know anything on the subject, it's him. He even writes well! Full of incredible, acurate descriptions of the true weight, length, and terms of weaponry - and I love his description of early viking pattern-welding. You begin to see how increadibly efficient these tools were, dull, heavy choppers indeed! On the contrary, Edge shows how incredibly light swords and full plate were, and how they were perfected throughout the ages, constantly shifting to outmatch the other, pure elegent, efective, artistic lethalness. A must have for anyone with any interest in knights, weapons, and armor.

A fantastic overview of the topic
This is THE book that I wish every SCA armorer and fighter had on his/her shelf and more importantly in the shop. It is a solid reference for every period activly covered by the Society. This book, with its excellent images and information, is always a good source of inspiration and documentation for any armor project that I take on. This book has raised my level of expectation of my own work and any other armorers work I come across. Its a must have for anyone who puts hammer to steel and wants to call it armor.

An incitefull look into the horrifying events at Auschwitz
I found this book to be one of the best that I have ever read on this topic. It tells the brutal truth, in detail, of several illegal, inhumane, and hatefull acts commited by the Nazi's during the Holocaust. I find this book particularly interesting because of the viewpoint from which it comes. The story is told by a young Jewish girl in her teens and how all of the madness appears through her eyes. It is fascinating. Never could any of us who have not been through this horror imagine the extent of its total brutality and hate. Ihave witnessed a number of people who absolutly refuse to read about these incredible peoples survival stories, simply because they can not handle the grousome detaails of this shocking truth. I find these people to be ignorrent(did I spell that right?-hee-hee). I, for one am very interested in knowing the truth about these bastards and the crimes they commited against these helpless, innocent people. I see it as not only informative but also as a wake-up call. Sara Nomberg-Przuytyk is simply trying to make the world aware of what is possible if the power is put into the hands of the wrong individuals. I feel this book has helped my to realize how naive we as humans can be, by nature, and has prompted me to be more inqusitive when an unusual situation arises. Her book was passionate, moving and inspirational.

A Very Powerful Story
This book is definetly one of the best books I have ever read on the topic of the Holocaust. As me being very interested in the Holocaust/WWII, I find this book to be very powerful, strong, and sick to think about what the Nazis actually did to the Jews. The writing quality is amazing, along with the realistic angle that this book is written in. Many grusome things are told, and described, but everyone, and I mean everyone needs to know what the Germans did to the Jews from 1933-1945. A Must Read Book.

It's very strong, but you need to read it.

Auschwitz: A true story
The story of an unfortunate Polish woman imprisoned for being Jewish, Sara Nomberg-Przytyk does an excellent job of recreating the events in her life. It's a chilling tale that reminds us what a terrible place the world can be. You always want to know what is coming next. Horror after horror is revealed in such frequency that it leave you wondering if it was exaggerated or untrue. "Auschwitz: True Tales from a Grotesque Land" is an eye-opening tale of survival. Through it all, still, people survived, one way or another. If you have not read it already, read it. You will be riveted in your seat and left with an incredible sense of gratefulness.

A wonderful book on life in Ukraine under Nazi occupation.
This is an extremely fascinating and well-written book. It tells the story of not just the horrible massacre of Jews and other "undesireables" by the Nazis in WWII occupied Kyiv, but also of life in Kyiv under Nazi occupation. Equally fascinating is the account of Babyn Yar (its Ukrainian name) long AFTER the Germans had been pushed out. It is the personal, first-hand account of the author who is a 12-year old boy at the time of the German entrance into Kyiv. One correction to a previous review here - according to the editions I have seen of this book, the author is not Jewish, but half-Ukrainian and half-Russian. This is of minor importance other than for those who might be inclined to reject this book as "Jewish Propoganda". It is a very honest work, portraying everyone involved as all-too-human; sharing all characteristics from the noble to the obscence.

Excellent story of Babi Yar's horrors and Kiev's occupation
I have been looking for a copy of "Babi Yar" by Anatoly Kuznetsov for several years. I'm not sure this is the same book, but the fact that both books describe the occupation of Kiev during World War II from the eyes of a 12-year-old, including the horrible massacre of Jews and Ukrainians at Babi Yar, lead me to believe that this might be a rewrite of my copy of "Babi Yar" I have been unable to find in circulation. In my copy, printed by Dell in 1966, the protagonist is not Jewish, but Ukrainian-Russian, although many of his friends at the time were Jewish as were many of the survivors the author interviewed after the war whose stories were included in the documentary. Having lived in Kiev for five years in the early 90s, Babi Yar is not only a book of the atrocities that took place in Ukraine during the war, but a glimpse at the survival skills by ordinary Kievites during the occupation. In this way, it chronicles the plight of all citizens of Nazi occupation, not just those of the Jewish residents of this wonderful city. It also describes the way in which the Nazis rounded up young Ukrainians for shipment to farms and factories in Germany, which is the prelude to the stories of thousands of Ukrainians, many of whom returned home after the war and became Soviet citizens I met in Kiev fifty years later. But many of these young Ukrainains who found themselves in the West upon the German defeat immigrated all over the world, comprising the Ukrainian diaspora, who also returned to Kiev after independence to help build this new nation. If anyone knows whether these are the same stories or if the original has been rewritten and expanded, please post this information at this site. In any event, it is unfortunate that both copies of this book are out-of-print because the story of the citizens of Kiev and the atrocities of Babi Yar need to be told.

Interesting and horrifying at the same time
Babi Yar is one of the best books I have ever read, the truth in this book is phenomenal. This documentary made me both laugh and cry and made me furious beyond belief. Coming from grandparents who were forced to spend years of their lives in concentration camps during the Holocaust for the mere reason that they were Jewish, made me really understand how the Jews felt during the book. I definitly recomment this book to everyone!
