Financial and Management Accounting: An Introduction

not very good
the book has you make too many assumptions on the management accounting and does not explain how equations are made. we were told in a lecture, " the book is very heavy going and not one i would chhose to teach from" by a senior lecturer.

The author is my lecturer
I am a first year accounts student (BA Pass in the Business school with accounts.... to give it its proper name). Myself and the other pupils in my class have an advantage in that the author (weetman) wrote the book.. we never have to go to lectures because they are straight out the book! She is as boring as she is skillful at making accounts seem interesting. Should have been an engineer.

Financial Derivatives: An Introduction to Futures, Forwards, Options and Swaps

Decent introduction to derivatives
The book is aimed at university students with many worked examples, graphs and end of chapter questions. Redhead's previous works follow this structure. This is useful when you are entering fresh into the area and do not want to be overwhelmed with models or more cutting edge "state of the market" diatribes.

I find the book to be logical, well laid out and progressive. Not the most sophisticated work out there but for the non-trader, non-CFO, it works its charms.

Useful book for learning more about derivatives
This is a great handbook for a non specialized audience who want to go further with derivatives instruments. Enter the magic world of swaps, options and even swaptions !

Can be confusing, major focus on economics
This textbook may not be a good choice for undergraduate students or for someone who does not have an intermediate or higher knowledge of finance. Wording in the chapters and in the end of chapter problems can be confusing. Statements are made and then not backed up with supporting information. The book spends a large amount of time on a macroeconomic view.

Excellent book.
We adopted this book during the first semester of 1999 with excellent results. Our students were delighted with the practical approach, and the breadth of its contents. Recently our country has been through a monetary turmoil, and the book served very much to explain the policies that our local central bank authorities have been pursuing.

An Introduction to Western Financial Markets

Excellent
This is a good starter for anybody who is a stranger to the world of finanical markets. The book not only explains all the fundermentals of the financial world - that covers the money and bond markets, foreign exchange markets, stock exchange markets and derivative markets, but also provides a glimpse of how things have evolved from the early fifteen century to what it is of today in the IT age by quoting many relevant and up-to-date real life examples - as recent as the Baring scandal. It certainly helps novice to appreciate, to some extent, what is going on with the recent Asian Financial Crisis.

Good book to read. Specially for people who are new to finance and economics. When I read this book i was a junior in college. Lot of concepts were very difficult for me to grasp. I reread this book in my senior year and i loved the book as this book has everything, for instance Principal and concepts of all the financial institutions and different "financial buzz words". If you are confuse about your future carrer path in finance. Read this book and you will be sure where you want to go.

Review of Library Fundraising: Models for Success
This book is a useful fundraising resource for librarians, fundraisers, students, and volunteers. Any person needing basic information about library fundraising would find this book helpful. This book contains case studies that point out library trends in alternative funding and illustrate some successful fundraising campaigns used by a variety of academic and public libraries to raise needed resources. Fundraising activities that this book addresses include: annual programs, special events, capital campaigns, developing endowments and foundations, and challenge grants. These case studies are important to librarians because they point out both the successes and failures that have transpired with actual real-life fundraising endeavors. The chapter entitled "A Capital Campaign for a Small Public Library" is particularly valuable as it discusses five steps that are essential to any successful fundraising campaign and explains how to know if you need the help of a professional fundraiser. It also explains how to select a chairperson for the fundraising committee and provides a job description fo this position. The chapter also provides a list of four reasons why this capital campaign was successful. The book points out the importance of fundrasing for libraries and details ways to obtain information on the topic. The book contains a bibliography which could be used to locate additional readings on fundraising. This book is recommended for individuals needing information on library development programs.

A good resource for library development staff-
Burlingame makes good use of actual case studies to illustrate successful library fundraising strategies employed in a variety of library settings. Challenge grants, endowments, foundations, fundraising campaigns, and trusts are discussed in relation to small college, public, and university libraries. One of the most valuable topics is the detailed discussion regarding project planning, definition of need, budget issues, and marketing. An updated edition of the book would be useful, with greater emphasis upon grant funds and proposal writing.

Mastering Quicken 2000 (Mastering)
Published in Paperback by (September, 1999)
Author: Stephen L. Nelson
Amazon base price: $14.99
List price: $29.99 (that's 50% off!)
Like Quicken 2000 itself, Mastering Quicken 2000 is a tool for improving your personal financial condition. True enough, this book shows you how to balance your checkbook and keep track of your stock transactions with the help of your PC (and Internet resources, in some case). But more importantly, it shows you how to use Quicken's financial tracking and planning tools to effect valuable changes in your financial status. For example, you learn how to use Quicken's improved strategic planning tools to identify the credit card balances you should pay off first, then develop a savings plan that will enable you to quit your day job sooner rather than later (religious saving is more important than lucky investing, Nelson rightly points out).

The author's advice is clearly the star of Mastering Quicken 2000, but his Quicken documentation is solid as well. If you're looking for a quick statement of how to calculate the attractiveness of mortgage refinancing, or advice on how to record a quarterly dividend payment in your investment ledger, you'll find what you need here. Nelson's coverage of highfalutin' stock strategies like calls, puts, and shorts is kind of cursory, but if you follow his sound personal-finance advice, you'll stay away from them anyway. Even if you've decided to use Quicken for small business accounting (QuickBooks, another product from the same company, is designed for that), this book provides you with information suited to your needs. --David Wall

Topics covered: Recording checking and savings transactions in registers, making reports and graphs, balancing accounts, managing loans, recording and tracking investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real property, and other assets. Personal finance advice covers getting out of debt, developing a budget and a savings plan, and strategies for wise investing.

Good reference manual
I have been a Quicken user since 1995, and I believe that the best way to learn the software is to start using it to manage your money. This is a good reference manual if you are fimilar with Quicken and want to learn the finer points of the sotware. If you are new to Quicken, I would recommend to dive right in and get a basic feel for the program before purchasing this book.

Excellent resource for intermediate users
When I started using Quicken three years ago, I mainly tracked daily transactions. That didn't take a lot of warm-up readings. But now, as I try to streamline the recordkeeping which includes investment tracking and tax planning, it seems that more time spent in planning and setting up Quicken scheme will yield more meaningful results. If you find yourself in a similar situation, then you might want to check out Mastering Quicken 2000 by Stephen Nelson.

Recognizing that Quicken is just a record-keeping tool, Nelson, a CPA himself, does a good job of presenting both contextual and technical information. Take a look at what he said about tax planning. "There's only one real trick to using Quicken as a tool for income tax preparations: Use category lists that neatly tie to the tax form lines you need to fill in when you file your income tax return." He then presents 14(!) pages of various tax forms before discussing Quicken features. Nelson isn't afraid to voice his opinions, either. In discussing Quicken's 401(k) feature, he says, "..it probably doesn't make sense to track tax-deferred mutual fund investments in Quicken. There's no harm in doing so, but you don't get anything extra for your effort."

I appreciate his honesty, hands-on opinions and advice that come from a person with financial and accounting background, as opposed to someone who is more on the technical side. Nelson also is the author of Quicken 2000 for Dummies, but I think he suffers a bit in that book from the Dummies format. Mastering Quicken 2000 is far less technical and far more comprehensive, though it is twice as thick as the "Dummies".

Which brings me to the only shortcoming of this book. While the book is organized so that first-time Quicken users may benefit, I think two-thirds of the book seem to be written for readers who are familiar with personal finance software. If you are trying Quicken for the first time, don't try to read the entire book -- start with just Part I, and read the rest as you increase your comfort level with Quicken.

A Primer on Securitization

Insightful!
Editors Leon T. Kendall and Michael J. Fishman adapted these first-hand accounts of the early years of the securitization industry from a lecture series at the Kellogg School of Management. The contributions from financial service pioneers are the book's greatest strength. They elucidate the economic and regulatory forces that made securitization a powerful, versatile financial tool. Each chapter stands alone, but the book does not follow a linear narrative. Caveat lector: these lectures were given in 1994, so the sections on current trends and future expectations are out-of-date. Hence, this primer doesn't cover massive changes in financial regulation, an explosion in the types of asset-backed securities (ABSs), the popularity of derivatives or off-balance-sheet accounting to hide fraud. We from getAbstract suggest this book for those entering the financial services industry or for those who need background history. This does not tell you how today's capital markets work, but it is an illuminating eyewitness account of yesterday's.

Securitization:Most important financial innovation in 25 yrs
The Primer offers an introductory read for those wishing to understand the factors that have been driving the securitization process, how it reshaped the financial industry, and the issues it poses for monetary authorities and regulators. The book's uniqueness rests in that the story of the origins of securitization is told by its founders. Lew Ranieri, Larry Fink, Leland Brendsel, Dennis Cantwell, working at Saloman,First Boston, Freddie Mac and Chrysler Financial respectively, along with others, relate both the challenges they faced and the promise they sought in launching the concept. Every effort is made to identify the principles necessary to expand securitization to new products and fields domestically and internationally. Professor Leon Kendall, Kellogg GSM, Northwestern University, Editor.
