If you want to keep drowning in debt, if you want to keep reaching for that better car, or bigger house-- then DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

Excellent Financial Overview
I have read this book three times, and each time I do I pull some great nuggets of golden wisdom out of it. This book is an overview of the Crown Ministries study which works to implement biblical principles on money in churches. If you are able to participate in a Crown small group in your local area, I would highly recommend the 12 week study...The book promotes a balanced biblical view of becoming a faithful steward in the areas of spending, saving, giving, investing, seeking counsel, working, avoiding debt, honesty and teaching children.

The chapter on honesty at work is particularly convicting. He writes that most people define honesty as what we can get away with, but the Bible always defines it as absolute faithfulness to the unvarnished truth. I really enjoyed the part of the book about work and becoming focused on a calling from God.

Dayton studied for two years the 2300+ verses in the Bible on money. He writes with candor and humility. I like that he challenges Christians to look at their lifestyle based on being faithful to God, and not automatically raise it with their income. Greed the silent sin is one of the most pervasive sins in our culture, he says.

For anyone that is interested in becoming more faithful to God with their money, and would like to experience the peace and joy that comes from learning contentment, I would highly recommend this book.

Very enlightening view of money
This book was organized and an easy read. I found it very helpful in shaping my view on money. I also felt a great burden was lifted from my shoulders, do to the references given from the bible on spending, saving, earning, and giving. It will also prove to be a great reference book for the future.

Chore Wars: How Households Can Share the Work & Keep the Peace

To me, it seems fitting that this book should have been written by a man, one who admitted his oblivious-ness to the work involved in running a household until his wife was eight months pregnant and bedridden! The book shows how to analyze the amount of work needed to run the home and who's doing what (which for the huge majority of households will be quite an eye-opener, especially for those guys who think they are doing their share 50/50). This is not just a married couples' guide, either. It covers children, extended families, and roommate situations (I just happen to know a roommate who will be getting a high-lighted copy of this book as soon as I'm finished with it ...). Funny stories, lots of helpful ways to resolve conflicts, and even practical, basic cleaning advice make this a book that should be in every household.

Pretty helpful...didn't cover all syles of family life
I thought this book was interesting and in fact became the topic of a dicussion group. The only issue it didn't address, that our group was looking for, was how stay-at-home moms can avoid the battles. It really comes from a basis of 2 working parents. But the quiz is a good communication opener.

What a relief!--my wife and I are not alone!
This is a wonderful book! It's funny and insightful, with loads of great advice, such as playing romping Rossini tunes whenever one cleans house! But truly the most valuable part for my wife and me was reading the testimonials of other couples and how they struggle with their differing cleaning styles. It made us laugh in recognition of ourselves, and feel more relaxed about a very touchy issue! Kudos to Thornton!

This book could save more marriages than Masters & Johnson!
What's the one topic that causes more domestic strife than any other? Money? Sex? Politics? In-laws? Nope. In terms of sheer, strength-sapping, soul-numbing volume, it's household chores -- no contest. Chore wars -- arguments over who's going to do what, and when, and how thoroughly, and with what sort of an attitude -- probably cause more bickering, resentment, and outright pain than all other cohabitational hassles put together.

At any rate, that's the well-demonstrated thesis of James Thornton's "Chore Wars," one of the most truly *useful* books I've come across in a long time. It's thoroughly researched and very entertainingly written (sample question from a self-assessment quiz: "Would you rather have okay sex in a clean house, or great sex in a messy house?"). However, what sets it apart from other books in its genre is a quality that might best be called "confessional." Mr. Thornton clearly has been through the chore wars. We gather that he is a former stereotypical male: a sock dropper, a beer-can strewer, a bathtub-scum ignorer, a veritable rancher of dust bunnies. Circumstances (his wife's problem pregnancy) forced him to change his Cro-Magnon ways, and he not only lived to tell about it, he found that he was much, much happier as a full participant in the running of his household. It's positively inspirational.

"Chore Wars" urges couples to focus not on blame, but on practical, one-step-at-a-time solutions. It also contains revealing profiles of real-life couples discussing their personal attitudes toward and experiences with chore wars -- including one glimpse of a "garbage house" that is absolutely chilling.

As someone who almost never reads books in the so-called Self Help category, I was doubly impressed with "Chore Wars." It's a bona fide page-turner with therapeutic value -- a very rare feat indeed.

Very thought provoking, if flawed
This is a pretty easy book to read, and professor Kelly does a very good job of pointing out how economic conservatives, along with big business have waged class warfare against working people, while running their own propaganda machine, and buying off the political system in the process.

I noted this book was flawed, and there are two primary reasons. While any classic "liberal" may rejoice at many of Kelly's thoughts, those who may be open minded conservatives, or on the fence, may be turned off by several tactics he uses. One is that he continually hammers home article after article, note after note, on why his point is right. But after a while it becomes a bit numbing, like you are being faced with a one-man counter-propaganda machine. While this may not be true, because he is so incessant it comes off that way. Second, the current major politician whose ideas are closest to Kelly's is John McCain, a moderately conservative Republican (I do not consider Ralph Nader a politician, and Bill Bradley is retired). Supporters of McCain's philosophy (whether they use him as their icon or not), who are looking for enlightenment may find that this book pushes so hard, it pushes them away.

Again, those flaws are not going to keep me from telling you to not read the book. If you think, even wonder, that Kelly may be right in that the Enron's and WorldCom's of the world are colluding with many politicians to stick it to the working man, Kelly will show you just how right you are. And his argument is quite compelling.

Excellent reading....
Even as a life-long Republican, I find it hard to disagree with many of the arguments in this obviously Liberal writing. I highly recommend the book.

If the book fails anywhere, it is in providing direct examples of the transfer of wealth that takes place -- from the taxpayers to campaign contributors -- as a result of our public electoral system being financed by private money.

After outlining problems, Kelly offers some solutions
Economic conservatives speak in this title, which uses quotes from the Wall Street Journal and other publications to show the intention of the conservative establishment to benefit corporations and investors at the expense of the lower classes. After outlining problems, Kelly offers some solutions for combating conservative agendas.

When you're ready for peace
When you're waaay past "Looking out for #1" or "Winning Through Intimidation," when you're more than a few miles down the road from "Getting to Yes," when strengthening and developing all of your relationships has become far more important to you than "winning" or getting your way or creatively persuading the other person to do your bidding....then perhaps you're ready for this book. That's right, when you're ready for peace, even if you're the one who'se going to have to change, here's a framework, a process. But not until you're ready.

Best for group conflict, less for individual conflict
Weeks certainly has an amazing background in conflict, and his book reflects it. I found his principles (the eight steps) to be best applied to long-term group conflicts, such as contractual disputes between companies or labor vs. management strife. The eight steps are also helpful for individual conflict, but less so.

As I completed the book, I sensed a need to distinguish between the two kinds of conflict and thus devise targeted steps for individual conflict of a short-term nature.

That aside, this book is not pop-whiz-bang fluff. It is hardy stuff from an academician with bountiful real-world experience in the subject.

Essential Life Skills Reference Book
This book teaches the reader a process towards better conflict management. It is not a hard process to learn; its not an easy process to use all the time, though. That being said, I recommend this book HIGHLY, especially to anyone who is looking for ways to make their home life, work life, or community life more enriching.

Dudley was a professor of mine in undergraduate. He's a great man, and this is a *great* book.

okay, although I understand that it's the best of it's type
Depending upon the health of your family (and family business) most of this book does not really apply. The author also openly states that. However, he does say that it only takes one of the "7 sins" to take down a family business and it does allow for some forewarning of things that should be avoided.

He does cover a lot of ground, including immigrant businesses, a good section on succession of the business, and touches on both small and large family businesses.

I found quite a bit of it to also be his sales pitch, implying that every family business should hire, in the foreground or background, a consultant, a lawyer, an accountant, and possibly a therapist =D

Overall, it's an okay book covering topics which hopefully most people are aware of and warning you about things you may not be. If you are facing problems, this book may help you either diagnose it yourself or he suggests things to look for in an outsider to help you diagnose it.

Good luck!

A "Must Read" for Anyone dealing with Family Businesses
This book really captures the dynamics of family business. The author's style blends complex theory and real life examples and communicates the results with clarity, empathy and humor. I read this book in an evening and came away with the feeling of "getting it", that I don't get from a lot of other business books. Oh yes, and in several places I laughed out loud!

Family Baggage/Deadly Business Sins
I have been the owner of a family business for over twenty five years and found Mr. Flemings book to be very accurate and insightful. My wife and I both read his book and agreed that we had committed all of the "deadly sins" to some degree over the years. The book was enjoyable to read, humorously presented and it generated a great deal of discussion among our family and friends. Highly recommended!

Perhaps three chapter's worth of usable content
It's only natural for a popular self-help speaker with a truly great message to want to put it into book form. The Power of Positive Confrontation teaches a truly great technique for confronting others that will help everyone who has trouble standing up for him or herself. Too bad there's only about three chapter's worth of actual content in its sixteen chapters. Instead the author gets into telling us how to dress for success, how to convey the information that a friend or loved one is in the hospital, do's and don'ts of International Travel along with several chapters of warm-up before finally getting to her actual WAC technique. Don't get me wrong, I still recommend this book highly but an abridged cassette version would be a lot less painful.

Why Win-Win" Is So Much More Effective Than "Zero-Sum"
With Susan Magee, Barbara Pachter carefully analyzes all of the skills anyone needs to resolve conflicts at work, home, and in life. Confrontation is inevitable. Think about it: What REALLY upsets you? How about "road rage" when someone else cuts you off, tailgates, deliberately forces you to the side of the road, etc.? Or how about "office politicians" who lie both to your face and behind your back, thrive on hurtful gossip, and in countless other ways try to advance themselves at the cost of others? Make no mistake about it: Negative Confrontation also has power.

Pachter has a specific objective in mind: To enable those to read the book to master the skills needed to resolve confrontation is positive, constructive, and beneficial ways. As indicated in the Preface, she wants each reader to be able to say "I don't feel frustrated any more..." or "In the past I would have sulked or complained until the person got the hint, now I can just say something..." or "Annoying things don't bother me as much because I know I can say something now."

The book consists of 16 chapters, ranging from "Positive Confrontation -- What It Is and How It Can Make Your Life Better" to "International Etiquette", with Chapter 16 followed by a "Final 12-Step Pep Talk." Over the course of the book, Pachter covers just about every conceivable situation in which conflict can occur at work, home, and in life. I think this book will be invaluable to individual readers as well as to senior-level executives who can use much of the material to help those whom they supervise to master the same skills.

What A Life Saver!
I've never been very good at confrontation; I always feel like I've said or done the right thing in the wrong way. This book changed that for good. Positive confrontation is something we all aspire to but rarely achieve. I've used what I learned in this book to deal with issues at work and at home -- and it works! Now I handle confrontation in the "right" way, and things work out much better both for me and for the person on the other side of the issue. This is a great book!

Literally life changing book for me
After buying this book and working through the figures, my husband and I determined that we could live on one income after our baby was born.

Why do we think we have to have two incomes to survive? It's because our existing lifestyle choices necessitate the additional income. Bigger house? Two brand new cars? Designer clothes? Stereos, appliances, toys, etc. If you think you need a big, brand new house and fill it with a lot of things, you will need two incomes and then some.

The main lesson I learned from this book is the high cost of an additional income, especially after having kids and incorporating daycare expenses.

Read this book with an open, objective state of mind and it can work for you, too.

insightful, practical, non-biased advice
If you're trying to decide of you can live on one income once the baby is born, you need this book. Unlike a lot of similar books, this book doesn't try and sway you one way or the other. (In other words, some families may find they're better off with one income, some families will complete the same worksheets and find they do indeed need two incomes.) It offers little in the way of philosophical, social or political justifications for one parent at home. It provides a way that each family can analyze what they spend and if two incomes is necessary. Some families may be surprised to see that having a second salary may cost them more! The points about taxation were especially revealing, and you don't have to have your masters degree in economics to follow this book!

Really opened my eyes!
I was amazed at how much a second income could really cost after reading this book. My husband and I don't have any children yet, we are both professionals with advanced degrees, but after reading this book and doing the math, we realized that we would be better off financially if I quit my full time job and worked out of my home part time. I quit 4 months ago and financially we're in just as good of a position as we were before, and I am much less stressed. Now I'm able to shop for bargains, cook healthy, less costly and better tasting meals and we are both much happier. We would have never done it without this book!

Fields Without Dreams: Defending the Agrarian Idea

"Any book about farming must now not be romantic or naïve, but brutally honest," writes fifth-generation grape farmer Victor Hanson, who is also a professor of Greek at California State University in Fresno. Hanson knows about the brutality of farming--in 1983 a glut of foreign raisins coupled with domestic overproduction caused the price of raisins to plummet from $1,300 a ton to $450, devastating small farmers in the San Joaquin valley. In this erudite look at the disappearance of the family farm and the rise of modern agribusiness, he argues that the loss of agrarians lies at the root of many of the ills that plague modern American society.

Fields Without Dreams
I must respond, although a bit late, to the review posted in Dec. '99 by "a reader": "As we read this book it became clear that Professor Hansen's uniformly negative opinions of the people who now support themselves as professional farmers are truly clouded by his amateur status as a farmer. The sad thing is that he does not see that himself. In case you are wondering, his profession is, after all, that of College professor."

Clearly the "reader" did not read Mr. Hanson's book carefully enough. As a nearby resident of his town of Selma, I can attest to Mr. Hanson's personal and family legacy of professional farming. He is by no means "an amateur farmer." Instead, he has worked on his family farm more than full time since his pre-teens, and supported his family doing so.

The difficulties Hanson encountered as a farmer were common to the ventures of his particular crops. In addition, his acceptance of a university position at Cal. State Fresno was mainly a way to keep food on the table after the raisin crash. I wish this reviewer had read the book more carefully before tossing out major criticisms.

As an outsider to farming, although my uncle is a cattle farmer in Wisconsin, I developed a passionate respect for farming after reading Fields Without Dreams. Hanson's overriding point, I think, is to emphasize the character and toughness required of farmers in any age. His book is particularly timely because, as he notes, "Family farmers are noble, but vanishing stewards of ancient ground."

Hanson also makes an important statement about farming--that its myth of simplicity and quaintness is unfounded. While capitalism overtakes the family farm in favor of agribusiness, just like it has many other American businesses, what is disappearing along with the family farm is an honorable society we'll never see again. I am glad Hanson is around to capture this moment for us.

Brilliant, engaging, impressive.
A wonderful read. Hanson sweeps the reader up into the the high stakes game, the espirt d'corps of the family farm, the teeter-totter hazards of weather and market demands, the changing fortunes of agrarian culture. A magnificent achievement. One of my favorite books of the last decade.

A fun book, so smart, so tragic, so meaningful.....
I read this laughing, smiling, shaking my head in wonder. A pasionate history of the risk and woe of the farmer's life.

Hints from Heloise : A 90's Guide for Household Cleaning
I enjoyed reading this book especially because it brought back memories of when Heloise had a column in the newspaper. I remember thinking how inventive she was in renewing/restoring items with local products found in the everyday home! I'm always looking for new ways to approach cleaning !!

Indispensable if you have kids or pets
This book is a must-have if you have kids or pets. A good friend has this book and I called her so often about stain removal I finally bought the book myself. The day after I received this book, it paid for itself after I got chocolate and then gum out of 2 of my son's outfits. It also includes many helpful hints on everyday household problems. The only thing I would change about the book is the organization - now and then it can be hard to find specific things. I always find the item, it just takes a few minutes. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

A great gift for a new Bride
Remembering Heloise's books I received 33 years ago as a bridal shower gift, I turned to Heloise again when I needed a gift for my new Daughter-in-law-to-be AND for my daughter who was also getting married. Soon after the wedding my new daughter-in-law thanked me for the Heloise books and informed me they had already come in handy!

Helpful Budgeting Basics
Over all the book is helpful, and the work sheets are detailed enough to seperate expenses, however, unless you have kept fairly detailed records for several months, you will not be able to accurately complete the worksheets. Be prepared to spend time with prep work before beginning.

Great way to budget your household expenses
I have been using this workbook for 5 months and I love it. It helps me get a good view to where our household funds are going. I highly recommend it.

Wow! I now know where all my money goes.
I bought the Household Budget Book when my credit card debt started piling up. What a difference it has made. It has helped me evaluate where I spend my money. Not only do I record my monthly expenses, income, and investments I can view my yearly living expenses, auto maintenance, and household inventory. I finally save the money monthly I had always promised myself I would. The back provides dollar stretching tips I've found useful. I've just purchased my second copy for next year.I never thought tracking my spending could be so much fun.
