The Intuitive Businesswoman : Achieve Success Through the Power of Your Personality
Published in Hardcover by Clarkson Potter (23 May, 2000)
Authors: Todd Lyon and Judy George
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $0.99

Have you ever wondered how your colleague can wear an oversized, flower-print linen dress to meetings, when you feel your exceptionally pulled-together look is as important as a pulled-together presentation? Or why she seems eager to treat her support staff as though they were her children, while you keep personal friendships and conversations firmly where they belong--at home? Well, look at it this way: perhaps you're intuitively a Visionary and, by nature, she's got a sizable dollop of the Artisan in her. This may not convince you she's not slightly loopy, but it will, according to the authors of The Intuitive Businesswoman, provide you with empowering insights into what you do best and what you'd be smart to leave to others.

Before you settle down to read, get out a pen and determine if you're predominantly a Visionary, an Artisan, an Idealist, or an Adventurer--the four archetypal personalities that Judy George and Todd Lyon describe, illustrate, and comment upon in this upbeat, informative book. The archetype quiz they provide is short, easy, and contemporary, and above all, more fun than the role-defining career tests we all took in high school. Don't expect to be neatly defined by one grouping; the authors don't expect you to be such an uncomplicated being, either. What they do suggest, however, is that in discovering the characteristics of a typical Visionary, for instance, and reading the stories of other Visionaries, both famous (like Elizabeth Arden) and not-so-famous (such as a literary agent who loves her job because of the "thrill of the hunt"), you'll soon be able to identify your truest type. This will then enable you to cherry pick from the advice the authors provide on matters such as managing your finances and your approach to money, interrelating with others at work, changing jobs or careers, starting a business of your own, and volunteering your time and money. Loaded with juicy informational sidebars and quirky quotes from all over the place, this book is not only a productive tool but a fun read. --S. Ketchum

The Intuitive Businesswoman
I have just completed The Intuitive Businesswoman and was very inspired by the book. It was an easy read and chocked with personalized information. After taking the quiz, I could identify myself and see how I fit with succesful women from my personality type. The book explores the lives of women from the past and also those that are presently living successful business lives. What makes it so interesting is that you get to see the obstacles and hardships that each person had to go through to achieve their success. There is such a range of diverse woman that it is possible to see yourself from many angles and begin to fit or add to the pieces of your own manifestation. I really liked the writing style and the engaging, sometimes humerous and interesting stories. It is a great gift for women starting out in their own careers, especially new college graduates. Or for seasoned women who desire to reenforce their resolve while they are hitting some rough spots. All in all it is a very valuable asset to my library and would be a great book for any person wanting to understand and strengthen their own intuitive knowing and how it works in relation to other personalities. An excellent book that provides great content, learning, enjoyment and fun. I highly recommend it.

The Intuitive Businesswoman
This is an outstanding book. It far transcends the woman's side of business in that the lessons offered and principles discussed are appropriate for any business person. The Intuitive Businesswoman is filled with very helpful principles, anecdotes and self-assessment exercises. The writing is easy and the stories of the various people featured are riviting and enjoyable. Rarely does a book offer such a wonderful combination of entertainment, insight and practical help.

useful information!
If you're like me and you've spent years figuring out what the heck you're supposed do with the skills you've been given, this is a great tool for helping you pull it all together. My artisan/adventurer labels were right on the money---so close, in fact, that I think I should go start a new business right now! If you've got an open mind and a searching heart, The Intuitive Businesswoman can give you some direction.

Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It

Critical Information for Family Therapists
As a family therapist with a special interest in the area of work and family, I have read a number of books on this issue. Unbending Gender is a tremendous contribution to the field and one of my favorites. It was highly recommended to me by a marriage and family therapist and university professor, and I am passing on the recommendation to many of my colleagues. Williams' book has important implications for family therapy, as many male and female clients struggle with how to combine market work and family work. It will change the way you educate, normalize, and approach this issue with clients.

Visions of a New Paradigm
This is the book that I had been waiting for! As a lawyer, feminist, wife and mother I have struggled with conflicts between work and career and found myself forced to make "choices" that later seemed unjust. After examining family law and employment discrimination law in the course of rethinking how our society structures the relationship of "market work" to "family work," Williams presents her visions for a new paradigm which she calls "reconstructive feminism" or "family humanism." She offers both legal strategies and policy initiatives for restructuring how we "work" and changing the ways we talk about gender. This book has had a tremendous impact on me. As a result, I am hoping to teach a law school course around this book next spring. Professor Williams has been extremely helpful in assisting me in that endeavor. In addition, I am urging everyone I know to read this book. We need to forge the coalitions Williams proposes if we are to be ultimately successful in "unbending" gender roles in our society.

Impeccable research, very readable
This is one of a handful of books that I wish I had written. It tackles the difficult subject of the work/family conflict with impeccable research and persuasive arguments for reform. It's not strident or hyperbolic, just great scholarship and great writing. You don't have to be a lawyer or law professor to read and enjoy it; it would give great support to any parent struggling to find time enough to work and raise a child. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the work/family balance movement, anyone who still calls themselves a feminist (I do), and all working parents.

A Must Read
A must read for anyone who tends to avoid conflict for the sake of keeping the peace. Dr. Ursiny meshes practical steps to overcome fear of conflict with engaging stories, while encouraging the reader to be true to self. I have recommended this book to clients and it is being used by small group discussion leaders with great results.

Best Conflict Book Available
This is the best book on dealing with your fears of conflict every written. Dr. Ursiny speaks in a language that is easy to understand and easy to internalize. Rarely has a book make such a strong impact on the way that I live my life. I will recommend it to everyone.

I really enjoyed this book!
I have always hated conflict. Although I have read other good books on conflict, none of them were helpful in overcoming the fear of confrontation. What I like about the "Coward's Guide" is that it helped me get to the root of my fear of conflict and gave me ideas on how to decrease it. I will say that it is not a book that you can just glance at and put aside. I had to put in the effort to do the exercises in order to really "feel" what the author was teaching. However, the pay off was worth it.

One of the most important things that I learned is that there are a lot of costs that come with avoiding conflict. The author helped me see that good things can come from healthy conflict like greater intimacy and respect.

It's chock full of common, no-nonsense ideas; natural homemade solutions and sprinkled with a liberal sense of humor. Hats off to the author--she's a real pro who gives away a lot of good tips and makes a "dirty" subject interesting and fun!!

Easy to read
I am in the process of building a home and this book was so helpful. It made me stop and think about what kind of flooring, appliances, light fixtures, etc. I was going to purchase and how I was going to clean them once I got them. It has great information for organizing too.

FINALLY a Unique Book!
I am actually buying 3 copies of this book as Birthday gifts to put in a giftbasket...for my son out on his own now...yeaaah..a guy friend who calls me with questions about cleaning, and a 24 yr girI who loves to clean! I started spring cleaning and donated all my Queen and other cleaning books to charity. This is an exciting and fun book to help you clean with a smile on your face! I Love it!

Cash Cow Kids
I heard your book featured on the Dr. Laura radio show as the book of the week. I respect her opinion enough to purchase what she recommends as good reading, especially when it comes to what benefits children. I love it! Practical advice and encouraging stories (not to mention cute illustrations/graphics) make this good reading for any parent wanting to be inspired to help thier children get ahead in life.
Thank you!

Change your family's financial future.
This book is a must-read for every parent. It is amazingly easy to read - a surprise since I expected another book full of financial theory with no practical advice. Not this book - the authors have filled this creative book with practical information and tips to help parents educate kids about handling money.
Yet, to me the book's highlights are the real-life success stories in almost every chapter. I have read many of them to my kids and have found them helpful and inspiring to us all.

Hot Buttons: How to Resolve Conflict and Cool Everyone Down
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (09 October, 2001)
Authors: Sybil Evans and Sherry Suib Cohen
Amazon base price: $15.95
Used price: $1.47

Road rage. Air rage. Cell phone rage. And, yes, even Starbucks rage.

"We live in angry times," says Hot Buttons author Sybil Evans, and she should know. As one of America's leading experts on conflict resolution, Evans has worked with everyone from corporations the size of AT&T to the United States Tennis Association to couples on the brink of divorce. So what's the source of our growing hostility? Hot buttons.

"A hot button," Evans writes, "is an emotional trigger." Your hot buttons get pushed when people call you names, don't respond to you, take what belongs to you, challenge your competence, don't respect you, give you unsolicited advice, don't appreciate you, are condescending... and the list goes on. In Hot Buttons: How to Resolve Conflict and Cool Everyone Down, Evans and coauthor Sherry Suib Cohen claim that by recognizing what pushes your hot buttons--and by learning how not to push the hot buttons of others--conflicts can be avoided. Even more important is the ability to turn them off once they have been pushed. The book begins with a five-step formula for doing this: "watch the play," "confirm," "get more information," "assert your own interests and needs," and "find common ground for a solution." Once the authors have explained how to achieve each step, they cover just about every conceivable conflict under the sun and how to employ the five steps in each case. Added to the mix are a number of self-quizzes for identifying what sets you off and dozens of catchy quotes, termed "Hot-Button Hints," such as "When anger rises, think of the consequences" (Confucius).

One of the book's more interesting chapters deals with how hot buttons can be hazardous to your health. Other chapters include discussions of hot buttons and intimacy, the family, children, friendship, and the workplace. Evans's expertise is apparent throughout, though she does get repetitive, particularly when driving home her points with what seems like an endless supply of personal anecdotes from those she's worked with over the years. Still, among all the examples, readers will find fresh, creative ideas for quelling rages large and small. --Patrick Jennings

Average review score:

An appropriate book for our times.
Sybil Evans does a good job with some very real and very frustrating situations. Her task of helping us deal with Anger is a large one, and after reading this book, I give her a thumbs up. The Anger Management techniques are good, and a lot of the book is about learning to recognize our own "hot buttons" or "pet peeves" as I call them. I think Ms. Evans should have thrown in a few more helpful tips, I felt the book did come up a little short, but it is a good book and well intentioned. I think the phrase I will remember most from this self help book is "when anger rises, think of the consequences." (Confucious). That has just got to be the most difficult, but most helpful advice I have ever heard! Thank you Sybil Evans for some good pointers and some self awareness you gave me. This book is not a problem solver. I think the theme is "alternatives, not answers." Self help junkies around the world should find it useful.

Hot Stuff from Hot Buttons!
I was pleasantly surprised by the practical advice and examples provided in Hot Buttons. Sybil Evans has taken the difficult topic of conflict resolution and masterfully crafted a text that the everyday reader (that's me) can use right away. Thank you, Sybil, for making this topic more understandable and easier to manage. I've already recommended this book to several of my co-workers!

IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
HOT BUTTONS is a pracrical guide for transforming the impact of negative emotional overload into positive behavioral and cognitive forces. The application of the techniques described in this book may be applied to a great number of situations regardless of wheather they occur in industry, within the family, at school or in traffic. The authors provide the reader/practioner with a variety of emotionally overloaded situation for analysis and techiques for resolving them. The techniques described are consistent with many theories about human behavior. The authors, Evans and Cohen, appear to base their approach to resolving conflict by "translating...words in a fresher way that gives the dialogue a new direction." To acquire this goal requires each to engage in the PROCESS OF LISTENING and respond in such a way as to convey that each has actually attempted to understand the other. I reccommend this volume to both the individual and the organization interested in improving productivity and personal balance through improving communication in human relationships.

Director, Executive Development-Hillenbrand Industries
This book is a real gem!, and one with many hidden facets. I learned many new tips and techniques about telecommuting and how to think about it, even though it is something that I've done off and on over the last 6 years. The book really shines in the area of lifestyle management---it really has a lot of worthwhile things to say about creating a life that will work for you. A life that integrates work into the bigger picture with all of the different priorities/challenges that stare all of us in the face every day. This book really tells you both how to work, and how to make your work work for you! The format is very accessible(I read some of the tips while waiting for meetings) and bitesized. The tip2 feature is a really cool way to apply the ideas and learnings. I'm recommending the book to all my friends who are telecommuting--or considering it. Fun, practical and impactful---you'll like it!

Too Young to Retire: 101 Ways to Start the Rest of Your Life

Save Your Money and Skip This One
Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees.

An Enticing and Useful Guide For All Aging Baby Boomers!
For anyone interested in how the rapid changes in our society have affected traditional ideas about retirement, this book provides a wonderful resource that not only questions a variety of traditional notions regarding aging and retirement, but also provides a plethora of thought-provoking considerations that help us to reconsider both the fact of growing older and the idea of retirement as they are currently viewed in this culture. Of course, the fact that I have already retired from one profession and am rapidly approaching the same conclusion with a brief secondary teaching career may make me the perfect candidate for such a book.

Yet I must admit that while I do not fully agree with many of the particulars that authors Marika and Howard Stone so enthusiastically espouse, I do find their overall message regarding the exciting possibilities for individual achievement and continuing contribution that such a life situation offers the retirement-eligible individual or couple. They embark from the substantial philosophical position carved out by former academic Theodore Roszak ("The Making of a Counterculture") in his absorbing tome, "America The Wise, The Longevity Revolution and the Wealth of Nations"(see my review), pointing out the facts associated with the new and burgeoning potential of the so-called baby boomer generation which is rapidly approaching retirement age with an incredible reserve of both financial and human resources at its disposal. Both Roszak and the Stones both argue for unleashing the human potential in a wave of creative activity, which is socially useful, and personally enriching.

What this book represents, then, is an eminently useful and immensely practical resource for people hoping to restructure their expectations, values, and personal experiences about what the retirement years are going to mean for them. Given the realities that traditional ideas about retirement are undergoing a revolution, the Stones provide the reader with an easy way through the maze toward a better understanding of what all the options are, as well as how to evaluate and assess these options and opportunities for a better and more fulfilling experience in the later years of life. And while the Stones find the mantra of life to be closely connected to work and expression through one's livelihood, they are wise enough to recognize other options for others, and encourage the reader to explore whatever seems valuable and worthwhile. This is a wonderful book, a delicious treat for those of us anxiously peering over the fence into the retirement years and wondering what to make of it all. Enjoy!

Essential Reading for Second Halfers
Whether you've just passed 40 and are thinking retirement is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, or whether you've reached your four-score-and-seven, this book provides perspective and practical help for thinking about "retirement." The Stones give us hope and courage for staying fully engaged with life, exercises and advice for taking charge of our own destinies, and real-life examples of people doing so, including themselves. They also give a good distillation of what other influential authors have written about living the second half of life. Read this book with a highlighter in hand, because you'll want to come back and review this sage advice again and again.

Pretty Good stuff!
Good book with good activities. Some are more involved than others and require some hefty prep and set up (if that's a problem, check out Miller's Quick Teambuilding Activities book, it's similar, but only has short, quick activities for when you are on a time crunch). I especially liked the writing format here, easy to skim the activities and quickly grasp the essense so you can decide if this is the one you wanna use!

Team-Building Games
What a great book! I am a high school teacher, and I'm not only trying to teach my students about literature and grammar, but also about teamwork, cooperation, and communication skills. This book has lots of activities that are divided into 4 levels from learning peoples' names to really opening up and sharing personal stuff. The instructions are easy to understand, and most require little preparation and supplies that you usually have around (pens, paper, tape, chairs, etc.) The book is well-organized beyond the 4 activity levels as well; for each game, the author clearly states the objective, the needed materials, instructions, and variations on the activities. For the second two levels, she also includes excellent discussion questions. It seems to me that these activities would really work with ANY group. Well worth the investment.

This is the best team building book around
We used this book for a current company workshop and it was amazing. The team building activities helped the staff to learn more about each other in a very creative way. We had lots of fun and learned too. I highly recommend this book for any company looking for great team activities.

The House of Rothschild: Money's Prophets 1798-1848
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (November, 1998)
Authors: Niall Ferguson and Neil Ferguson
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $12.50
Collectible price: $42.35
Founded in the late 18th century by expatriate German Jews, the London-based House of Rothschild was within decades the largest banking enterprise in the world. Its principals controlled a vast portion of the industrial world's wealth--more so, Oxford historian Niall Ferguson writes, than any family has since--and as a result enjoyed tremendous political influence in the major capitals of Europe, counting as allies such important figures as Metternich and Wellington. That influence would provoke countless anti-Semitic tracts fulminating against Jewish usury and against the power of "Eastern potentates" in the empires of England and France. Although the Rothschilds were well aware of their power and not reluctant to use it, they operated fairly, Ferguson notes. For example, whereas lending rates in the textile industry, in which the Rothschilds got their start, were often 20 percent, the fledgling house charged 5 to 9 percent. Through shrewd, complex negotiations they helped promote peace and the beginnings of economic union throughout Europe.

Ferguson's sprawling history covers much ground and involves a cast of hundreds of players. At the outset he notes that his book was commissioned by the modern descendants of the House of Rothschild; even so, he approaches his task with careful balance and a critical eye, pointing out the Rothschilds' failings as well as successes. The result is a fine, solid contribution to economic history, one that, unlike so many books in the field, is eminently readable. --Gregory McNamee

Average review score:

A first-rate history, if a bit thin on the finance
Ferguson has written a rare work: a family chronicle which is both a compelling read, and is good history. The text is richly detailed, while the very complete footnotes provide the reader with a clear sense of the broad scholarship that has gone into the book. One caveat: while Ferguson points out in his introduction that the work is not a financial history, he unfortunately doesn't paint as rich a picture of the financial markets of the early 19th century as the book requires. While the house's trading history makes for a fascinating read, it takes place without any contextual comparison of how other market makers behaved and traded (other than an occasional comparison of profits and losses). Still, though, it's a minor criticism of a great book. Highly recommended.

An excellent and comprehensive analysis
Niall Ferguson has done a commendable job of describing the developement of a captivating family saga. What I found most appealing about the book is its comprehensive nature -- it weaves the family story in the context of the political and economic developments, with which it is closely intertwined. What is even more fascinating is the level of financial details about the bank than Ferguson provides. Perhaps it is his access to the recently open archive in Moscow that allows the author to deisclose finanacial history that it fascinating and detailed.

I would highly recommend this book to any serious student of history, as well as to people interested in banking and economics. Perhaps it may appear too detailed for the casual reader.

Engaging and enlightening
The House of Rothschild 1798-1848 covers a pivotal time in history. The Napoleonic Wars, rise of capitalism, the rise of multinational businesses, development of the railroad and the French Revolution. The Rothschild's had a front row seat to all of this and were the focus of some of it. From humble beginnings in the Frankfurt Jewish Ghetto, the rise of this family is chronicled through three generations. Many myths about the Rothschilds are laid to rest by Ferguson's groundbreaking research, much of it original scholarship. One of the main threads running through the book is that finance had a profound role in the ability of the rulers of Europe to do what they wanted. By 1825 the Rothschild had a significant role in sovereign finance. Many things were wished for by the various despots that ruled Europe at that time, but if the Rothschilds did not perceive that those wishes would lead to stabilization and peace it typically was not supported thereby making it difficult to realize. They did not support the despots with out reserve, but they knew that peace protected their interests. That perspective makes this book unique.
The Rothschild family business was a partnership that was constructed as the 2nd generation left Frankfurt for London, Paris, Vienna, and Naples. That the partnership should survive was the 1st generation's greatest desire and was respected (most of the time) by his descendants. The exchanges between the 5 houses make for fascinating reading and are reference extensively in the book.
The book details how the Rothschilds pushed for Jewish emancipation and equality and were resisted at every turn. That did not prevent them from receiving commendations from the various governments that the worked with. It did not prevent them from gaining entry to the most prestigious universities for their children. It did not prevent Lionel from gaining entry into the British Parliament without having to swear a Christian Oath. The Rothschilds achieved a great deal for themselves and for Judaism.
Intrigue, betrayal, revolution, and vignettes of famous people make this a very entertaining book, not merely a historic rendering of dates and places.
