one of the (few) really good books on bonds
Contrary to the stock market where small orders (say for 13 stocks priced at $47) are not uncommon (in fact, encouraged), the US bond market is a market dominated by institutions and high net worth individuals (I say US because the situation is quite different in Europe). A bond broker in the US is not eager for your business unless the size of your order is at least six figures. This fundamental market reality is reflected in the kinds of books on investing: bookstores offer countless books on stocks, but only very few books on bonds (if any at all). Almost all books on bonds recommend that investors do not buy individual bonds but put their money into bond mutual funds. The book under review is an exception to this rule. Written specifically for the needs of the "high net worth" individual, it deals with all aspects of constructing and maintaining an individual bond portfolio. The emphasis is on government and municipal bonds. The more interesting class of emerging market bonds is completely left out presumably because of risk considerations. The book is very well written and a pleasure to read. Although it is impossible to write a book on bonds without using equations, the author restricts the use of formulas to a minimum and prefers to illustrate abstract concepts using numerical examples. In my opinion, this is one of the best books on bonds. I recommend it highly to everybody interested in buying individual bonds including "low net worth" individuals. The clarity of exposition and the wealth of details is not matched by the competion.

Money Management for Kids
If you are looking to have devotions at home, but do not know where to begin, stop looking. This book and the entire series are excellent. They teach biblical values through hands on expereince. As a pastor of a church, I am recommending this series to all members who have children. You do not need to know theology or know how to teach, just have a desire to set aside time one night per week and enjoy time teaching, learning and growing with your kids in a Christ centered fun way.

If your family is different, this book is for you.
Many of the non-traditional families in our society feel left out then it comes to money books. Most of us aren't in the 10% or so of families with a father working and a mother at home. This book gives tax info and other good advice for this kind of family--the one with two earners, blended families, even same sex families.

I liked the charts which summarized the info for each family type, with specific details on what to do.

The New Insecurity: The End of the Standard Job and Family (Suny Series in Social and Political Thought)

Two trends resulting in a new, society-wide insecurity
Wallulis, professor of philosophy at the University of Southern California, describes the new insecurity resulting from two major changes: the end of the traditional job and the end of the traditional family (and marriage). His book is meant to compliment the existing literature on the subject already covered by the management and business disciplines. His basic premise is that we are moving from an "insurance" state, where our basic security was protected by jobs and companies, social welfare, and "till death do we part" marriages. This results in a "new insecurity." Although his discussion is from a philosophical / historical point of view (Foucault, etc.), he does devote a major portion of his book to the ideas of Bridges, Charles Handy, Robert Reich and Peter Drucker. In the case of insecurity resulting from the end of "jobs", the concepts he discusses (e.g., "employability vs. employment", multiskilled workers, reliance on self rather than on companies or employers) is strikingly similar to those being discussed by contemporary thinkers in the management, business, economics and organizational behavior disciplines.

Parental Priorities and Economic Inequality
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (December, 1997)
Author: Casey B. Mulligan
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Interesting subject,original approach,accessible exposition
I recommend this book mainly for three reasons. I found the subject really exciting : is economic status of the children dependent on the choices of their parents, and if yes, how ? The approach chosen by Mulligan is very original, because, while using the full strength of the economic reasoning, he decided to endogenize parental altruism, instead of taking it as given. Finally, one very good point for non economists is that his argumentation is altogether clear, convincing and accessible. This is a very uncommon quality in the economic litterature.

Creating tangible, effective solutions
Compiled and edited by Sam Daley-Harris (Founder and President of RESULTS Education Fund), Pathways Out Of Poverty: Innovations In Microfinance For The Poorest Families is an informed and informative study of how to best help the 1.2 billion people worldwide who subsist on less than $1 a day. Pathways Out Of Poverty is a detailed survey and analysis of microfinance as a means of loaning very small amounts of money to help families become self-sufficient, (if you give a man bread he eats for a day; if you loan him enough to buy a fishing pole then he can feed himself). Individual chapters cogently address the special concerns of HIV/AIDS prevention among the poorest fifth of the entrepreneurial world; how microfinance can empower women; how microfinance can improve reproductive health; and much, much more. Pathways Out Of Poverty is a very highly recommended reading for anyone concerned with creating tangible, effective solutions to the age-old problem of endemic poverty.
