A Good All-Around Choice
I received this book a few weeks ago and it's helped me get up and running quickly. I know quite a bit about accounting/investments, but am not a computer geek. This book provided the right balance between non-technical explanations and enough detail for me to set up my somewhat complicated finances. I'm originally from Canada, and the appendix for Canadians was a nice touch even though it wasn't pertinent to me right now.

Save Smart for a Secure Future: The Essential Guide to Achieving Your Retirement Dreams
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (13 January, 1999)
Author: William T. Spitz

A Smart Way to Save for Retirement
William Spitz has written a well organized easily understood guidebook on saving for retirement. Among the topics covered are a run down on the basics of retirement plans, formulas for determining how much you should be saving to meet your retirement goals, a review of investment fundamentals, an interesting look at investment risk, and how to create a portfolio and select appropriate mutual funds. Each of these topics are discussed in clear and concise language and illustrated with relevant charts and graphs. The section on risk and and the section on creating an investment portfolio interested me the most.

Spitz restates the well documented correlation between investment risk and reward and attempts to put it in proper perspective for those who are in the process of saving for retirement. Briefly, he cites five factors which must be considered when evaluating investment risk. They are time, human capital, financial responsibilites, other resources, and emotional makeup. For each factor he discusses important considerations and provides some guidelines to help in understanding.

The section on creating an investment portfolio is interesting and well done. He introduces the theory of the optimization process an its use in selecting appropriate investment choices. He presents four recommended portfolios and discusses them based on risk/reward projections.

This is a nice guide to saving for retirement. I have a feeling I will be using it fairly often when I need to refresh my memory on some important basics of saving and investing.

The Scholarship Advisor : More than 500,000 scholarships worth $1.5 billion

THE most useful scholarship book I've ever used.
I've used lots of other scholarship books before, but what really set this one apart was the step by step process the author used to show how to go about winning scholarships. Most books have lists (and the list in this one is great) but this book actually walked me through how to search and apply for scholarships. It helped me become much better organized and efficient in my search. Best of all, it has helped me get a lot of the grunt work out of the way by showing me how to use my computer and my previous work to organize new applications. I recommend it without hesitation.

The Scholarship Advisor, 2000 Edition

There are hundreds of thousands of scholarships out there, worth over $1 billion. If you're smart enough to get into a college that'll cost somewhere between $30,000 and $80,000 (depending on if it's a public or private institution) for four years of study, you should be smart enough to apply for scholarships and win some financial relief for yourself and your family.

Chris Vuturo knows about scholarships: he's qualified for $885,000 in scholarship money so far and is currently a graduate student at Duke University pursuing a master's degree in environmental management and business. His book indexes over 500,000 scholarships, conveniently streamlining the process for the rest of us. He advises how to find the scholarships you qualify for; how to write exceptional inquiry letters, personal statements, and essays; how to fill out applications properly; and how to interview well--all while meeting deadlines and paying attention to the details.

The Scholarship Advisor lists scholarships alphabetically, as well as by major or academic interest (chemistry, business, criminal justice) and by career interest (fine arts, teaching). Vuturo also provides college-specific scholarships, scholarships for minority students, and scholarships for students with specific ethnic backgrounds or religious affiliations. The 760 pages of scholarship details that follow spell out who they're for and when they're due, how much they're worth and how to contact the institutions for an application. Most of the scholarships in The Scholarship Advisor are geared toward undergraduates, but Vuturo devotes a chapter to graduate scholarships as well and also discusses internships, résumés, recommendation letters, and low-interest loans. With appendices of sample forms and state aid agencies, this book is an essential investment for any individual who isn't independently wealthy yet still wishes to pursue an education. --Stephanie Gold

Extremely Useful Reference
I am a financial aid professional, and I purchased this book for my own use, and for my students as well. This book only lists awards that can be used at *any* institution, so it doesn't waste the student's time with scholarships that can only be used for one college. Most of the scholarships listed are intended for undergraduates, but many are open to graduates as well. This is a very useful reference work.

Worth the money and time
I ordered several scholarship books, some based on reviews, some by description. This books is worth the money I spent on it. It is easy to access scholarships which pertain to you and all of the information regarding addresses, websites, etc seems to be correct. It takes time to go through any scholarship book but this one seems to be easier than most to scan. I have a good point of reference with this book.

Good Job!
This is a great reference, like the author's "Scholarships 2001" was. Go through it and see what strikes your fancy. And if totally free interests you, supplement this book with the Norman Thomas Remick book "West Point" to learn the real story of the best kept secret in education that's, no -- not only about becoming an Army officer, and, yes -- totally paid for by the government (your tax money REALLY at work!). If totally free doesn't grab you, Gail Schlacter's book has so much in it, I'm sure it has something for you. Good luck!
