Investment side of Finance
Pay Yourself First is an excellent Book. I am a Mortgage Consultant and I think that it is important that I understand the investment side of Finance. Not only for my client's sake but for my sake as well. I have read countless books and articles on Investing. I have to say your book was the easiest to follow. Thanks for such a great book. I will keep my ears and eyes open for your next book.

A real stock tip
Mr. Brown I read your article in a recent copy of our newspaper, The Final Call and I was very happy to see it. I went out and got the book. I have been looking for information about investing and Allah answered my prayer. Thank You. (Salaam)

Plan Your Estate : Absolutely Everything You Need to Know to Protect Your Loved Ones (4th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Nolo Press (April, 1998)
Authors: Denis Clifford and Cora Jordan
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $0.19

Planning your estate is one of the most complicated endeavors you'll ever undertake, yet its results are also the most far-reaching; after all, it will continue to affect those you care about long after you no longer can. So it's worth understanding all the options and ramifications, being personally involved, and doing it right. This Nolo Press guide to estate planning is an excellent source of information on the many various details and considerations that you need to take into account--such as children and probate, estate and gift taxes, second marriages, and a wide variety of trust options (charitable, generation-skipping, spendthrift, living, and educational, for starters). It delves into the factors that affect married people versus single, the laws regarding children, types of beneficiaries and wills, plus joint tenancy, life insurance, retirement benefits, taxes, and organ donation. Showing a number of sample estate plans, explaining what hiring a lawyer can do for you (and how to choose a good one), how to do your own research, and including a glossary of estate-planning terms, Clifford and Jordan give you the tools to decide for yourself how you want your estate disposed of--and to make sure that's what your legal documents reflect. --Stephanie Gold

Very Thorough
If you expect to have a $1,000,000+ estate and want to understand your tax saving options, this book is excellent. It's readable, usually clear, well organized & well indexed. It progresses into many advanced topics such as QTIP trusts, GSTT trusts, GRATs, GRUTs, GRITs, etc. and explains them in good detail, with examples. Includes some very useful state-by-state info.

You'll work much better with your lawyer if you read this book first.

I read a library copy, but then bought my own.

This book works well with Condon's "Beyond the Grave", which is much weaker on the nuts and bolts of estate tax planning but much better at getting you to think through the human (family conflict) side.

Great primer and resource, but get the companion software
BOTTOM LINE: Many people looking into getting an attorney to prepare a simple will have probably had sticker shock - several hundred dollars minimum for a competent attorney to prepare it. But as this book explains, do it yourself estate lawyering, while not prudent for complex situations, is clearly within the reach of those with even moderately complex situations and the patience to spend a leisurely weekend reading this book.

WHAT IT COVERS: This book is primarily a primer, explaining the foundations of estate planning including: an overview and whether you actually need to spend time reading the book and drafting estate docs, drafting a will, how to think about what assets will go to which family members and other beneficiaries, financial instruments such as brokerage accounts/bank accounts/life insurance and how they fit into wealth transfer, as well as powers of attorney and health care directives. What I like best about the book is that you know you are getting candid advice from someone not trying to bill you by the hour or sell you variable annuity life insurance. In my own area of expertise - finance - the fact that the author's opinion regarding life insurance is dead on (tax planning should be kept separate from investing strategies and as such variable annuities are complete bunk) gives me great comfort that I'm getting straight shooting advice in the rest of the book.

WHAT IT CAN BE USED FOR: The book can serve readers on two different levels. If you are going to get a lawyer anyway but are the type of person that wants to be educated when you talk to lawyers/accountants/brokers, this book will have you speaking the same language and is an easy read over the course of a weekend. If you want to prepare an estate plan yourself, this book serves as an ample resource to help create the necessary docs. The fill-in forms in the back are certainly capable of serving as the basis for your basic estate docs, but at the same time it may be more comforting to most people to have a seamless document that they are not penciling in blanks, which leads to my next point...

THINK ABOUT GETTING THE COMPANION SOFTWARE: This book is published by Nolo Press, a well-respected publisher of legal self-help books. They also publish a software title in conjunction with Quicken (makers of the financial planning software) called Quicken Lawyer which not only has an offline/online legal manual with much of the info included in this book, but its main function is to create a battery of estate documents for you through very simple step-by-step interviews - you answer the questions, it drafts the legalese, you print and execute it. I would almost recommend just getting the software instead b/c there is a decent offline/online manual included, but for those that really want to know the why behind what they're doing, get this book and the software. See my review on Quicken Lawyer Personal Deluxe for more info.

LIMITATIONS: The book readily admits there are situations that require an attorney and points out throughout the book which situations require it. In general, get an attorney if you expect to owe federal estate tax (threshold is currently estates over $1.5 mm, but rising rapidly through 2010), have an ex-wife or two, have kids that don't speak to each other, or other complex family dynamic.

A practical, comprehsive guide
I have read about 10 books on estate planning, and this is by far the clearest, best organized, and most comprehensive of the lot. The authors cover the issues of trusts, tax planning and tax reduction, and asset preservation. This is the book to start with, and is really as good as they get.

Good Things Come in Small Packages
This is one of those thin little books with heavy duty impact.

Wattles gives simultaneously down-to-earth and heavenly instruction in how to get rich. He gives specific, step by step and easy to follow methods which when studied and applied consistently WILL help you become successful in any endeavor.

I am committing, once again, to study a chapter of this book daily. Things always improve when I do exactly that.

One of my friends said recently, "Everything I ever needed to know about life is contained in 'The Science of Getting Rich'"

Its a great little book......

There are no words
A fog lifter!

Inspirational!

THE ONE AND ONLY BOOK you need to get rich. So claims the author (and I wholeheartedly agree). Love it's exclusivity mindedness because it's deservant of that to no end.

Five stars is being stingy, ALL THE STARS IN THE UNIVERSE is what I really give it. R-E-A-D I-T

Classical Genius
Wallace D. Wattles has written a book about getting rich that surpasses everyone else! The reason is that it's not too long and focuses clearly on the subject matter. His resources include the holy bible. The material is presented in a clear and concise manner with the do's and dont's for the reader to follow without alot of unnecessary pages to make it longer. So many of today's authors have written books that are too long and tend to confuse the reader by the time they complete the book. This is a book to live by.

Incredible Book filled with great knowledge
I got this book for myself, but found myself sharing this with my teenage daughter and thought that the messages were truly inspiring for both of us.

One section that I especially liked and shared with my teenager repeatedly was about self love. I have not read many books on this subject but found it was written very well and that you have to love yourself in order to love and help others that you will be helping in the future.

This really is a must read for every business owner!
I got alot from this book. It is a joy to read. Tom has really nailed it on this one. It will be shared with my entire family.

Another winner by Tom Feltenstein!
Feltenstein was born to share his very human experiences, through literature! I treasure every paragraph. My frustration is wanting to re-read the last while bursting to drink in the next!

Finally, a book that doesn't talk down to me
How refreshing to find a book about personal finance that doesn't treat me like an idiot because I sometimes want to pamper myself with non-essentials like a huge TV. She also uses concepts and phrases like "cost to friendship" rather than focusing on money as the only thing that matters in life.

The use of real-life examples shows that the author knows that economic theory is one thing, and how people really live their lives is a different thing. The book doesn't make me feel like a moron because I don't have an MBA and this approach really does help me understand her explanation of savings, economics, etc. better than the other "experts."

Wealthy Choices
This book is a must for anyone seeking to explore how they arrive at choices in their lives that have financial impact. Ms. Tzougros's keen insights as well as myriad examples bring the principles for making better choices to life and provide practical ideas to make changes to achieve greater financial freedom. It is crammed with valuable insights and ideas. One of the nice things about this book is that many of the examples are ones that I have experienced and can relate to. As a businessman who considers himself fairly astute in making financial decisions, this book provided me with insights I had not thought of and will be implementing to continue to achieve financial success. This is a must read and should be in everyone's bookshelf as a resource to return to over and over again.

Best Bet!
Penelope Tzougros' book is a treasure. I have been reading it since I recieved it as a Christmas present, and by the time I was a few chapters into it, I went out and purchased several copies to give as gifts. This is a valuable gift for anyone of any age and any income. It is a pleasure to read the financial suggestions in the context that we experience them in our everyday life. Money management has a role in our lives daily and has a context. Penelope uses these contexts to teach the smart ways to be at peace with our financial interactions. Her handle on psychology and values is so apparent. I applaud her masterful efforts! I truly hope that the people for whom I have purchased these books will read it and gain a better understanding of their financial behavior. Penelope is a wonderful guide through the maze of money matters.

Set aside a little extra time when you're looking up information from the DK World Desk Reference--you won't be able to keep yourself from browsing. The large, gorgeous pages are colorful and well designed, and while the facts you need are readily available, their neighbors are clamoring for your attention, too. Beginning with a set of physical, historical, and economic maps of the world and its continents, the Desk Reference quickly gets to its heart: several pages devoted to each nation of the world (as of the year 2000), from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Clear, detailed maps, synopses of political, economic, environmental, historical, and demographic information, and exquisitely helpful charts bring each country to life and serve as a brief but thorough lesson on its place in the world. The four-page spread on Yugoslavia will help you understand the situation there better and faster than a pile of history textbooks, and your awareness of the importance of groups such as the G7, WTO, and IMF will expand tremendously after just a few minutes of browsing. Despite its entertainment and educational value, though, the DK World Desk Reference is also a sharply focused reference tool: The index and gazetteer will bring you to the right page without fail time and again. --Rob Lightner

Beyond Cartography
This book presents a complete overview of the world. The physical, political, historical and economic details are covered in detail. Each of the world's nations are mapped in detail. There is a guide to 20,000 of the world's important places along with recent name changes.

With more than 5,000 illustrations, charts and diagrams, 600 maps and 25,000 facts and statistics this has to be the world's best book about the world.

You will learn about:

The Physical World
The Political World

The Continents
The World Economy, Population and International Organizations.
Time Zones
Chronology of World Historoy
The Formation of the Modern World
The Solar System

To say this is comprehensive would be an understatement.

The colors and pictures are stunning. The pages are easy to read and this has a high visual appeal.

The first part of the book has wonderful maps of the world and what was known at the time and what was going on in the world at the time.

In the section about "The Nations of the World" you will find specific information about climate, people, transportation, tourism, politics, defense, economics, resources, environment, media, crime, education, health, spending and world ranking. This huge section takes up most of the book. The Index is well organized and extensive.

A must have for any teacher or library.

Good little bookykins...
Really it's quite big and very good. It contains 3 sections, section 1, maps, more like an atlas, a map on the world on every page. Section 2 - Factfiles for every country in the world, including Dependencies and territories such as Antarctica. Section 2 also contains the date of independence, which years borders were eastablished, the country's national day, the vehicle registration plate, crime, transportation and many many more. Section 3 is a very useful gazetteer plus a great nearly over an a hundred paged index.

The World in a Nutshell!
I love this book! Clearly-presented charts, maps, histories and statistics on every nation in the world--a gold-mine of facts. Colorful graphics and text, in the trademark "DK" style, highlight data on: climate, transportation, tourism, people, politics, world affairs, foreign aid, defense, economics, resources, environment, media, crime, education, health, spending, GNP, life expectancy, literacy, infant mortality rates . . . whew! As one with a zealous interest in politics, geography, economics and world affairs, I'm sure I'll be opening this book quite often. Perhaps my favorite feature is the "chronology" presented for each country, listing important dates and events in that particular country's history. I also like the pie charts summarizing the religious persuasion and ethnic makeup of each country. For those looking for a clear, concise, yet thorough volume of world facts, this is a great choice!

Be Prepared : The Complete Financial, Legal, and Practical Guide to Living with Cancer, HIV, and other Life-Challenging Conditions

Coming off the deaths of his father following a bout with lung cancer, a loved one who was diagnosed with leukemia, and a number of friends who contracted HIV, attorney David S. Landay wrote Be Prepared for people facing life-challenging conditions. The book is organized and presented in a tone Landay says is necessary for anyone facing an uncertain future. As such, he repeatedly emphasizes a need to both expect the best and prepare for the worst. He covers a variety of topics, including drugs and treatments, nutrition and exercise, taxes, new uses of existing assets, and estate planning. Being proactive is a consistent theme and is particularly relevant in areas such as medical power of attorney, living wills, do-not-resuscitate orders, durable power of attorney, and preneed decisions about children. Of course, when it comes to an area such as money, it's tempting to assume that much of this information is already presented in other reputable books on financial planning that cover areas such as life, disability, and health insurance. But Landay makes a point of noting that some of his concepts for people with life-challenging conditions appear to fly against conventional wisdom. He calls attention to those concepts with a special symbol and refers to them as CASH: Conventional Advice Switched on its Head. (Examples: As long as you have a taxable income, it is advisable to continue to invest in retirement accounts; even if you don't have health insurance, there are still ways to get it; disability does not generally happen overnight; Medicaid covers more long-term care than Medicare.) And the book is certainly unique in its compilation of advice in a variety of areas (medical, financial, and legal), all aimed at informing people facing critical decisions. In the end, it's hard to know if Be Prepared is a truly proactive tool, or the type of resource people won't turn to until a crisis strikes. In that sense, it's much like earthquake preparation guides that go unnoticed until the big one hits. Nevertheless, Landay's effort is a sobering reminder both that poor health can send our lives spiraling out of control and that a little planning ahead can bring pride, dignity, and a sense of power to an otherwise compromised life. --John Russell
Average review score:

Extremely thorough guide
Be Prepared seems to have been written for people with AIDS and cancer, but its recommendations apply to anyone facing health problems and any kind of financial difficulty. The author guides you through getting disability, maintaining health insurance, getting other benefits that may be available to you and getting all your papers and affairs in order.

These steps help you keep control of your life when health problems could otherwise overwhelm you. As Landay says, "preparing for the worst allows you to expect the best." I followed his recommendations in coping with multiple sclerosis and applied some of them in my book The Art of Getting Well.

It's not always the easiest read; it's long and packed with info and resources. But I consider it a vital reference; I don't know of an equal one on the topic.

Great resource for someone with limited time
This book was full of helpful information. I read it for my stepmother, who has terminal cancer. There is tons of information in the book, and it was super easy to pick through it and read the parts that were relevant to us. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has limited time in this world.

Everyone Should Have This Book
Be Prepared is an incredible compilation of useful and practical information for anyone dealing with serious illness. When my mother was diagnosed with Liver Disease, I had no idea where to turn to get answers to a number of our questions regarding insurance and financial matters - our family attorney didn't even have all the information compiled here. I am grateful that a friend gave me a copy of Be Prepared... Not only did it provide me with the tools to evaluate our situation realistically, it also pointed me in the right direction to deal with issues that hadn't even crossed our minds. I highly recommend Be Prepared to anyone facing the challenges of a serious illness.

Invaluable resource
As a financial practictioner,

I have applied many of the concepts from this wonderful work. One of the good things about the book is that it addresses not only the technical aspect of valuing business but also the art form as well. The book has assisted me in valuing companies in several industries and I consider it to be a one of the resources that is a staple of my practice.

Much thanks to the authors

From Bowman's Accounting Report November 1998.
"One of the challenges to providing business valuation services is educating inexperienced staff. Without adequate training, leveraging this profitable and growing service can be a problem. A new book by CPAs Gary Jones and Dirk Van Dyke helps.

The Business of Business Valuation is a primer for those just getting started in valuations. It covers the reasons for doing a valuation, the process and components, the valuation expert's role, as well as marketing and pricing. Even experienced valuators can benefit from the discussion of valuation consulting -- helping a business owner increase value, through smart management and policy, to achieve, overall personal, family and employee goals.

The anatomy of a business valuation is particularly helpful, as are the three sample valuation reports. You'll also find discussions of trends, ethics and coursework for porspective valuators."

The Most Important Valuation Book You Will Buy
This is the single most-important valuation book you will buy. It teaches you how to build a successful business valuation practice.

Gary Jones is a marketing genius, and this book contains far more marketing tips than you will find anywhere else.

I have a bookcase full of books about valuations. I've read this book twice: cover-to-cover. And it's packed so full of practical know-how that I keep discovering new, profitable ideas each time I dip back into it.

You may already know how to do business valuations. But if you want to build a successful practice...buy and read this book.

Great place to start
I would buy this book for a teen or young adult who doesn't know anything about investing. It is written in a totally relatable style, and succeeds in conveying the urgent message that one should start investing early in life.

It could stand some updating, though.

Start here, start NOW!
Ever traded baseball cards or comicbooks? You?ve taken your first step in investing!

This book succeeds where many others fail: It does an excellent job of breaking into layman's terms the most complex investing and financial concepts, while at the same time making the whole thing completely relatable for someone who knows *nothing* about investing. That is a talent many wish they had. This is no mean feat when you consider all the jargon you have to learn. Now, imagine having fun while doing it! Wow! Eric Tyson, eat your heart out!

Sure, it?s been a while since this book first came out, so you know it needs a little updating...get over it! I still give the book five well-deserved stars. I appreciate the authors for writing such an awesome little book, as reading a book is a big investment of time, and reading this book was definitely worth it.

Share it with a teen or twenty-something you love, and give them the gift of setting them on the path to becoming investors.

A MUST READ for people in their teens and twenties!
Before I bought this book, I was probably like a lot of young people out there... ya get paid from work and you go blow it on the weekend with your friends at the mall. You just manage to get your bills paid off, and wonder why you can never seem to get a decent amount put away in your savings account? People, wake up! This is the time you should be saving for your future, or you'll regret that you didn't when you get older! I bought this book with determination not to spend every dollar I make and how to put my money towards my future. The book gives excellent explainations on the stock market and how it works, and even explains all those Wall Street symbols in a way that it's actually fun to read! It explains everything from savings accounts, to stocks and bonds, to IRAs! When I was finished reading the book, I was so glad I had read it when I did, because the later you wait, the more you're wasting time! I recommend this book to all! Read it and you'll be glad that you did!
