Professor review of book
Great book for the first course in a graduate health administration program where no prerequites are required. There is a workbook for the textbook to help verify understanding of concepts and principles. I would order it as well.

The book is also appropriate for health professionals who have been promoted into management positions and now need work with financial information.

Why the 1990s experienced a series of financial crises
Financial Markets, Money, And The Real World by Paul Davidson (Editor of the "Journal of Post Keynesian Economics" and Professor Emeritus, University of Tennessee, Knoxville) is an informed and informative study of why the 1990s experienced a series of financial crises with terrible repercussions that reverberated throughout the global market. Focusing on the central role that domestic and international financial markets play in affecting the economic growth rate, and offering prescriptions to improve worldwide economic viability in the 21st century, Financial Markets, Money, And The Real World is a highly practical, forward thinking, and strongly recommended reading for students of Economics in general, and the interactive, interdependent global financial markets in particular.

How to build a comprehensive model, and live to talk about it
Penny's book is an excellent introduction to the world of modelling for project finance (which is so different from other types of financial modelling).

The book is filled with suggestions on how to build your model from the ground up, so that the model is robust enough to accomodate virtually all types of sensitivity request. By following the guidelines in the book, you will significantly reduce the number of times you will say "the model can't do that".

The book comes in 4 volumes, the first giving an overview of modelling for project finance, the second explains the different model sections and suggestions for the optimal layout eg: tax, cash, debt, Balance Sheet, etc. The third section gives tips on debugging (who has time?) and presentation. The final section presents a sample model for review.

I highly recommend this book. I can say that the tips and tricks learned from this book have saved me countless hours of sleep AND possibly many problems with my models.

If you are a serious project finance modeller, you should consider taking the author's 3 day course covering similar material. With the course AND this book, you might actually get a life. Both are well worth the money.

Great book!
This book explains how to assign a value to options in understandable terms. Some knowledge of calculus is helpful but not necessary to grasp the concepts. Equations are given for those interested.

A number of example portfolios consisting of calls and/or puts are given. Each portfolio is described in terms of aggressive or conservative, sensitivity to volatility, and performance relative to movements in the underlying stock. Graphs show the current and expiration date values of the portfolio versus the price of the underlying stock.

Baxter's book, "Financial Calculus: An Introduction to Derivative Pricing", concentrates on the math. This book puts its emphasis on trading strategies.

A most have for any CFP
The noted financial planner, Harold Gourgues has compiled the most comprehensive, stepby-step handbook for professional financial planners available today. His approach is geared to the professional's everyday needs, combining concise clarity of presentation with practical applicability. Here the reader will find a handy compendium of factual information on tax laws, financial instruments, commercial regulations, and the like. But even more than a reference, the handbook is a useful planning guide that lays out specific financial planning strategies for achieving particular financial goals.

The reader will be fully acquainted with ideas and concepts pioneered by Mr. Gourgues, and now in use by fellow professionals. These include:

FINANCIAL SPEED, and how to measure it using the "rate of return matrix study." SEGMENTATION, using the pyramid to illustrate it for clear understanding.

TAX THERMOMETER, as a means for measuring and graphically illustrating a client's income tax exposure.

Similar informative content and concepts throughout provide a logical, practical, understandable approach to personal financial planning. All in all, an invaluable addition to the library of every financial planner, advisor or consultant, or anyone involved with such professionals.
