Not What the Doctor Ordered: How to End the Medical Monopoly in Pursuit of Managed Care (The Hfma Healthcare Financial Management Series)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (January, 1998)
Author: Jeffrey C. Bauer
Amazon base price: $35.45
Used price: $5.45
Average review score:

A crystal ball into the future of American health care.
Jeffrey Bauer really knows what he's talking about. All it takes is one trip to the clinic or hospital, and you know there's something drastically wrong with the delivery of health care in America. If you're insured, it's scary. If you're not insured, God help you!

Bauer offers a commonsense solution that will lower cost and increase service. And we know he's right. Since this book was originally written four years ago--although recently updated--much of what he's advocated has already (but slowly) begun to occur.

Every health care professional should read this book. It should be a required text in every allied health care provider school in the country. It should be a required text in every medical school in the country as well. But it won't be, for although it is not anti-doctor it challenges the status quo. And that always scares those on top.

An empowering book for those who want to see real change in health care.

Wonderful Book; Blueprint for Healthcare in 21st Century.
If physicians are not already in fear of losing their medical monopoly it's because they have not been paying close attention. The greed of many (not all) doctors is the root cause, as they have lost their patient-centered focus in pursuit of huge finacial gains in the health care market.

I believe that tax-payers are now in the process of revolting, evidenced by proposed changes in federal regulations (Healthcare Finance Administration). Costs are unbelievably high and the country still has a large number of people who are uninsured. Healthcare in america is in serious trouble, and the physician empire is crumbling. I say, the sooner the better.

This book gives more insight into healthcare problems and solutions than any I have read. Please read this book and start trying to find ways to implement the proposed changes in your state law. I know from personal experience that the primary care offered by advanced practice nurses is as good as any offered by a physician. This book will give you the confidence and insight required to help usher in meaningful healthcare reform for the 21st century. Please read it, and pass it on to a friend.

An excellent resource
There's really nothing else like this book. The book is a great value just for the investing/finance/banking side. It's also a great value for just the technology/computer/internet side. I have found this book to be very helpful.

The best glossary for investing, computers, Internet, etc.
This dictionary contains every investing term imaginable, plus every computer/Internet related term you'll ever need. As an investor, this is ideal. As an individual that doesn't understand all the computer and Internet jargon, this is ideal. With 7,000 terms, this is a great buy.

Brilliant educational project
Most textbooks on financial modeling are devoted to describing specific models, such as those for stocks, bonds, or options, or to their specific applications such as arbitrage trading and portfolio management. Few books describe the financial principles behind the models and tie the models to business solutions.

The Oxford Guide to Financial Modeling by Thomas S.Y. Ho and Sang Bin Lee (yes, the authors of the Ho-Lee model, the first arbitrage-free interest rate model) successfully ties the thought processes and applications of the financial models together and describes them as one process which provides business solutions. The authors very ably explain all the models used in finance, take the financial theory and modeling to the next level and develop a business model framework that integrate the fields of corporate finance, fixed income, derivatives, and Asset & Liability management.

Each chapter begins by introducing a practical problem. The financial models that provide solutions to the problem are then described. The chapter concludes with how the models can be applied. Because of the nature of the material on financial models, the book presents many results as mathematical formulations, yet the text is very enjoyable as the more rigorous mathematical derivations are deferred to the appendices and to the epilogue.

What really makes The Oxford Guide to Financial Modeling a brilliant educational project and just not another excellent textbook is the companion web site that serves as an interactive workbook designed specifically for the book. The site is designed to further enhance understanding of the use and applications of the models referred to in the book and it is accessible free of charge.

Next wave of the financial engineering revolution
This book can very well open the next page of the financial engineering revolution. In additional to all the information provided by Hall's book, this book systematically discusses financial modeling procedures for existing financial instruments, and develops a framework to extend current research to accommodate future scenarios. I think the most impressive part of the book is the discussion about how equities (like SUBX and JDSU) can be valued as embedded bond options given their debt structures and earning powers. The industry-standard literatures use much more crude and subjective methodologies such as WAC and discounted cashflow.

The authors of this book are also the creator of Ho-Lee model. Therefore it is not surprising to find extremely detailed explanations on virtually all the interest rate and bond models. If your career aspirations is to become a bond trader or a quant in general, this book is a must read!

The New Bible of Financial Market
I got this book about a week ago. What a treat! This book gives comprehensive and in-depth descriptions on a variety of most popular topics: financial modeling, valuing different financial instruments, US and international financial market structures, trading strategies, and many more. I think due to authors' math background, sophiscated math finance students like me find this book even more intriguing -- we can actually see how mathematic theories are applied in the market to price different exotic instruments. Yet this book is also written simple enough so MBA students (or even advanced college students) can gain comprehensive knowledge of how financial market really works.

Also, don't forget to check out this book's website. It contains all the models discussed in the book. Everything is already coded in excel and vb, and ready to use. Best of all, it is FREE!

Path Integrals in Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, Polymer Physics, and Financial Markets

One of The only TWO Books to own on PI's
Kleinert the physicist is NOTHING short of phenomenal. This book is just one of his many treatises. After reading Feynman(+Hibbs) this is the text to follow up.

Sadly the second edition which is in print contain MANY typos.

Be sure to get the partial ERRATA for the text from our site: MathematicusLabs.com/PI

click on the Kleinert's forum. There, you can also ask your questions regarding this text.

Kleinerts Completeness
Kleinerts book "Path Integrals in Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, and Polymer Physics" presents the reader with a very complete and very thorough discussion of path integration. The book offers such a wealth of topics,it becomes straightforward to select material, both for advanced undergraduate as well as graduate courses in theoretical physics.

Many, many issues dealt with in this volume have appeared here for the first time, such as the inclucion of the quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom through path integrals. This book is a major step towards bringing this approach to quantum physics onto the same educational footing as the Schrödinger equation that standard texts focus on. This book profits from the clarity and conciseness that is also a hallmark of Kleinerts scientific papers.

I would say this volume is highly recommendable for any student considering to major in {theoretical} physics, and an absolute must for any lecturer in this area. Infact, I don't know of any excuse not to have your own copy.

To the point
Comments: I had an opportunity to hear a segment on WHUR last week and then got the tape. I found it entriguing and enlightening. I want to know more about investing. I am ready to take the leap of faith, but I don't want to make any decisions without a better understanding. Thank you in advance for sharing your wisdom.

This is the road map !!!
Comments: I listened to your presentation and I realize I have so many financial "errors" that we MUST pass along to our younger generations the importance of becoming financially saavy. We MUST get them beyond the mindset of giving literally millions of dollars away - aka NIKE, TIMBERLAND, HILFIGER, PERRY ELLIS, NAUTICA, EDDIE BAUER, etc. and not reap ANY benefits of these huge consumer investments. We pump over 400B into the economy - we can turn this around. I know you know - but more of us have got to learn this - and this means ME.

Everything you need to know about your credit report
This is an excellent little book. It describes how to check your credit report and how to get erroneous information cleared up. It includes sample letters and addresses of credit bureaus.

I have used this book to clean up incorrect information in my credit report.

This book's publication pre-dates the internet boom and so there's some information that would warrant a new edition. However, all the critical information is here clearly and concisely, the primary reason it should be reissued.

Most helpful and informational for laymen like myself.
I had problems in dealing with Collection agencies and did not know that I had the right to tell them to go away allowing me the opportunity to deal strictly with my creditor. I have become very credit conscious and check my credit report meticulously for errors and any unauthorized inquiries. Where I thought that I had to wait 7 years to remedy some of my credit woes, I was able to remedy them within months. The sample letters were most helpful and they even cause me to purchase or send to Pueblo, Colorado for other books on credit and credit rights.

Indispensable primer for anyone considering bankruptcy
This tome is an absolute godsend for those who are considering filing for bankruptcy yet may not know much about the process. This book covers all the bases concerning Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings. From common mistakes and misconceptions to the highly specific legalese of bankruptcy law, this book addressed nearly every one of my concerns about this complex and emotionally challenging process. I opened the front cover a bankruptcy know-nothing and set it down feeling like an attorney.

This is not a DIY guide to financial rebirth (in fact the authors highly discourage this), but more of an "Everything-You-Ever-Wanted-to-Know-About-Bankruptcy-but-Were-Afraid-to-Ask" reference. The authors do not delve into the minutia of the process. They seek to be more like tour guides, leading you through the perilous wilds of US bankruptcy law with their collective wealth of knowledge on the subject. I found more useful information in the first 10 pages of this book than I did in six hours of web-surfing.

The most superlative compliment I can bestow upon this volume is that it helped to allay my fears and crystalize my plans for my financial future.

Finally, an understandable bankruptcy book!
This book is clear, concise, understandable and even funny at times. The authors have done an incredible job of taking a very complicated topic and making it understandable for a lay audience. At the same time, they avoid talking down to the reader.

Personal Bankruptcy for Dummies is, first and foremost, a very useful tool for anyone even thinking about bankruptcy. It answers all the questions without preaching or browbeating. It ought to be read by every potential bankruptcy client before they meet with a lawyer.
