Very useful book for researchers
The best parts of this book are (a) a very clear description of a number of control methods which can be used in practice; (b) very useful survey of macroeconomic models which can be used in practice. The application on India is very useful for deleopmnent planners and researchers. There are many books on useless methods which in practice can not work, but this book is a very exception. Every methods explained here are original and work in practice.

Excellent on both application and analysis
The book consists of the following chapters: 1. India's Economic Scene and the Behaviours of the Monetary-Financial Instruments; 2. Methods of Optimal Control; 3. Recent Advances in Macroeconomic Policy Analysis ands the Analytical Structure of the Control Model 4. Estimation and Analysis of the Model 5. Analysis of the Result of the Control System.

A simple to Use & simple to Understand Guide to wealth
Larry Winget, has a style all of his own. This shines through in this book. It is so very simple to read, yet every chapter has at least one brilliant idea, that can be used instantly. This is not a Think and Grow Rich book, this is a book that is full of thought provoking practical ideas.

I always like books from people who walk their talk. Larry was rich, then broke, then rich again. Who better to learn from than an achiever?

The book is split into 19 short chapters. It covers every aspect of wealth, and how to create abundance in your life. It is a book that is focused and to the point. There are no esoteric theories, just straight forward obsevered advice.

I would also recomend, Bob Proctor's Book Born Rich, Wallace D Wattles book The Science Of Getting Rich and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

This book should be on everbody's bookshelf. Simple and easy to read advice, from somebody who has made it.

This book WORKS!
"Money Stuff" by Larry Winget really works! Easy to read, thought-provoking and full of great ideas about prosperity! 'Ya gotta' read this one! Larry James, Author of "LoveNotes for Lovers" & "How to Really Love the One You're With."

Money Machine: How the City Works
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (June, 1986)
Author: Philip Coggan
Amazon base price: $3.95

Clear Explanations of Financial Basics
This is an excellent guide to the basics of money and financing.

The book focuses on London as a financial center and the British finanacial system in general, making frequent comparisons to New York and global practices. However, as it describes financial basics I think the that it would be useful to people almost anywhere interested in understanding such basics as: interest rates, banking, shares, insurance, foreign exchange, etc.

I was most impressed by Coggan's clear explanations helped by historical descriptions, e.g. goldsmiths and silversmiths became the earliest bankers when they stored gold and silver in their safes for nervous citizens. Then, when they noticed that of all the gold and silver stored in their vaults only a small amount was required for withdrawal, and this amount was roughly matched by new deposits, the idea of lending the idle gold and silver was born. The earliest smiths were from Italy and did their business from wooden benches in the market places. The Italian for bench is "banco" and was corrupted into the English word "bank".... Suddenly at the hands of Coggan banking seems like a very human enterprise and becomes easy to understand.

Coggan's knowledge is obviously thorough and his explanations are excellent. I highly recommend this book. Comments to LearningResearch@Cox.net

Great introduction to the basics
I bought this book about 5 years ago when I first got a job in the UK Financial Industry. It covers all the basics and you can start with little or no previous knowledge (I did!). To illustrate his point he includes examples of Indices, Exchange Rates, Unit Trust prices etc. from the Financial Times newspaper. It is easy to understand too. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Finally, I know WHY I overspend and how to stop!!!
Commonsense, step-by-step how-to book, but with the essential WHY factor answered. WHY do I charge stuff when I know I won't be able to pay it off at the end of the month, when I have promised over and over again not to do just that??? Now I know why and I feel confident that this book has helped me to stop the bad financial habits forever.

BANK ON SOLVENCY!
Finally a book that does not chastise those who cling to bad money habits. Mr. Gallen does not tread lightly over the shredded credit card debris field of bad debt. You've got a problem. He knows. And he'll tell you how to fix it. Thank God. Spend some dimes on this book and put some dollars back in your pocket.

The best advice on winning a scholarship
This book is indispensable. It contains the best advice I have ever read on how to win scholarships. What makes this book so effective is that is has several chapters on how to select a topic and write your own winning essay. Plus, to show you how to put it all together it has 30 examples of essays that won money. This really helps you see how to do it. Besides the essay it also has several chapters on doing the scholarship interview. Rather than just give you a list of questions this book gives you answers to the questions. Very very good reading
I've read Dave Ramsey's other books and I think this book is worth reeading even if you've already read the others. This one I felt focused a little more on the foundations of character, values, patience, and discipline. It contains the best description of 'diligence' I've ever seen.

Highly recommended for those interested in taking a hard look at not just their debt to income ratio, but also a hard look at themselves and their values.

Life Changing!
This book is life changing. For people with financial wisdom it may be yeah, I know that. But for those of us that missed the lessons not taught on financial management in school or by our parents this book is wonderful. It is an outstanding gift for new college graduates and newlyweds. I love it and have already given it as a gift a half dozen times within a month of completing the book. It helps couples talk about their disconnects on managing the household income in a self mocking way. It also helps eliminate some of the stress around money when you truly recognize it's purpose.

Fun!
This book has been a great step-by-step guide to getting financially organized. It's geared to average working-class folks, not aspiring accountants and brokers. The author's humorous approach makes the material accessible and interesting!

The book begins with steps to determine where your money goes, then works through ways to eliminate debt, plan for emergencies, and invest money for various purposes: retirement, college, and other large expenses. The book also includes advice for buying insurance and completing your taxes.

The book is a beginner's guide, not an exaustive reference -- so don't expect to find all the information you need if you want to invest in individual stocks or understand each line of your tax return. Rather, it gives clear advice to new investors through commonsense arguments that require almost no background information.

Only two complaints: First, health insurance is not discussed. Some advice on such an important kind of insurance would have been very helpful to me. Second, the authors repeatedly advertise their website. (To their credit, the website ...is a pretty good resource. You might want to try it before you get the book or even instead of the book. It has free trial membership as of this writing.)

Fun & Informative
06/10/03 I like this book so far. I love the way it's written it gets you in the good mood for financial planning. It has me excited about learning how to manage my money.

It does not make you feel like you are going to deal with a seroius & tedious issue. I look foward to doing this. I feel like this is going to be fun especially with the jokes. It sometimes catches you off guard.

So far I give it 5 stars I will come back & update this later...

Never Short a Stock on Wednesday: And 300 More Financial Lessons You Can't Afford Not to Know

One Money-Making Idea a Day for a Year!
'Sophie Tucker . . . was right when she said being rich is a whole lot better than being poor . . . She moved with the times. So must you.' Nancy Dunnan's latest list of money-making ideas is full of ideas for improving your stance versus the tax authorities, purchasing items for less, making better investments, and living a more intelligent life through accessing key ideas on the Internet.

Here are a few examples:

Never buy a mutual fund in December -- that's when they distribute their capital gains for the year and you'll pick up a tax bill for gains that you really didn't get to enjoy (if you make the purchase in a taxable account).

You can get a higher rate of interest on federally-insured bank CDs by buying them from your regular stock broker -- they look around for the best deal across the country and will charge nothing if you already have an account with them. You can often get an extra half point of interest that way.

If you want to own index mutual funds, own them in taxable accounts and buy high turnover mutual funds with your tax-free accounts. You'll save a lot of taxes that way. Know what the annual trading turnover is on the mutual funds you own or are considering purchasing. Generally high-turnover funds will cost you more money in fees and taxes.

Get a Roth IRA for you and one for each of your children if you qualify. Having been held for 5 years and after age 59 1/2, the withdrawals are tax-free and you can withdraw whenever you want.

If inflation starts to rise and you want interest income, buy the U.S. Treasury's new I bonds that are indexed to inflation. Your interest payments will rise, and your principal will be safe.

Make your airline reservations just after midnight. That's when airlines make more discount seats available.

If you're having trouble getting venture capital, approach the business school you attended. They often invest now in projects sponsored by alumni/ae.

If you like to trade on-line, have two accounts in case one is down because of computer problems.

Double check all of your on-line confirmations. There's lots of good ideas for catching and correcting mistakes.

The only area where I found the book a little wanting was in picking stocks. Many of the old chestnuts (dogs of the Dow, quality growth stocks, etc.) were described. But the latest research has shown better ways to do each of these things than are described here. For example, see ChangeWave Investing for finding high growth stocks. You can check your ideas with the items here, but don't count on this book as a source of cutting edge stock-picking advice.

You'll get your money back many times over however with this fine book, and you'll enjoy the simple, clear writing style. Financial advice doesn't have to be long and complicated to be helpful.

This is the Best Money Saving Book!
You can't afford NOT to buy this book. It gives you many things in life that we take for granted. For instance, when at a car dealership- never tell a salesman the exact model and color you're looking for. The salesman would try to put extra add ins in the cost, but if you refuse all of it. Most likely to close the deal, the salesman would throw it in FREE. I am happy that I'd read this book before I'd bought my new car. I've saved alot from many other examples in the book and so would you.

Recommendation: Strong Buy
