A Role Model for All of Us
After completing The Barnabas Way, I felt compelled to accomplish three tasks with some dispatch: to read it again, to jot the author a thank you note and to buy another copy to send along with the note, asking the author to inscribe it to my best friend.

In a time when bookshelves are crowded with variations on the "what's in it for me?" philosophy of the spiritual life, Mr. Sloan answers that question elegantly by refusing to recognize it as the appropriate question. He declines to preach or promise; instead, he points the reader to Barnabas, illuminating his hero's story with contemporary illustrations that bring him to life. In so doing, he allows us to see for ourselves the way to "an unexpected path to God."

To read this deceptively slim volume is to be reminded that "what's in it for me?" is far richer than we suppose, that it's available to all of us and that the path to it diverges from what many of us assume. Barnabas and his modern descendants put feet and hands to the revolutionary ideas about who and how God loves that Phillip Yancey makes clear in What's So Amazing About Grace.

A lovely, funny, treasure
Though I loved Home, and Family, two other collections edited by the Fiffers, BODY is by far my favorite. Gathering together another list of A group writers, this collection is distinct from those others in its freeness and imagination, its lovely lyric investment in the parts of the body (and as it happens...soul) chosen by each author. As I was reading I thought these essays would be a good rest for fact-weary medical students and an eye-opener for appearance burdened teenagers (and adults for that matter). Everything from the penis, the the heart, to the teeth, are brought forward by these gifted writers. They are celebrated, worshipped, and just plain made fun of some times. A joy. A find. A keeper. A++

PS - Since it doesn't say on the page here. Here are some of the great writers in this book. LYNDA BARRY (Cruddy), Francine Prose (Guided Tours of Hell), Mona Simpson (Anywhere But Here), Jane Smiley, Chris Offut (Kentucky Straight/The Same River Twice), Kyoko Mori (The Dream of Water), Ron Carlson, Veronica Chambers..... and MORE! It's great.

Death stalked the re-enactment in more ways than one
Just as Calleshire is an imaginary county in England, like the Ledshire of Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver novels, here we see the first appearance of the fictional Middle Eastern Sheikhdom of Lasserta, and Anthony Heber-Hibbs, British Ambassador to Lasserta (some relation to the Heber-Hibbs 'county' family we met in _Henrietta Who?_). The Anglo-Lassertan Mineral Company has an awkward problem: Alan Ottershaw, a British mining engineer, ran over a pedestrian in Lasserta who stepped out into oncoming traffic, and faces the death penalty under Lassertan law. The Lassertan government, for its part, is using the incident to put the screws on the company, while Ottershaw himself was bundled home to Calleshire.

Where he asked his member of Parliament for help, took part in a historical reenactment by the Camulos Society of the Battle of Lewes, and died - amazingly convenient for almost everybody. (The Camulos Society and their reenactments would entertain me even without a mystery, especially if Aird allowed them to run on a bit longer. I hope they reappear in some future book.)

Sloan has a mess on his hands: by the time he and Crosby are called in, Ottershaw's body has been cremated - and we have our first proper introduction to Tod Morton, the local mortician, since he found a mysterious metal pellet in the ashes. Queremitte - the rare mineral mined in Lasserta. Who has been doing what to whom, and why? Why was somebody - not on the Camulos muster list - dressed as Death and following the M.P. around at the reenactment? Who's been sending live scorpions and threatening messages to Calleshire's two M.P.s in the post - but not letter bombs?

In some parts of Indonesia, people bury their babies in living tree trunks. In the Amazon rain forest, the Yanomami dead are burned, crushed, and then eaten. Today in Ghana, people bury their dead in coffins shaped like cars, fish, and other animals. People around the world view death in many different ways, and National Geographic editor Christopher Sloan's Bury the Dead examines what ancient burial sites in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas reveal about varying cultural perspectives on death and life after death. Sections such as Why People Bury Their Dead, The First Burials, Egypt Prepares for the Afterlife, Golden Tombs of the Amazons, and Ghost Soldiers of the Emperor discuss ancient burial secrets that cast new light on modern burial practices. Packed with vivid color photographs, timelines, artful illustrations, helpful maps, a bibliography, and an index, this riveting, clearly presented book is sure to fascinate budding archaeologists, anthropologists, and cultural historians. Fun in learning
Buzz and Ollie's High, Low Adventure is a fresh, inventive way to teach children the musical concept of pitch while they go on a great adventure with their friends Buzz and Ollie. This book of a three book series has some great animals throughout the story. Mr. Worm and the baby birds were some of my favorites. My grandson sat still for this book (he is four and that's pretty amazing) in part because of the fun rhyming text but also for the vividly colorful illustrations. A great book for home or even a classroom settings.

This is a fun, easy to read children's book that is a wonderful way to introduce children to musical concepts. The colorful illustrations, the fun rhymes and the interesting characters make this an adventure I'm sure glad I didn't miss. The authors have done an excellent job in making learning fun. My grandson loved it. I could see this book series as a great tool for reading time in a classroom setting, too.

A Very Creative Children's Book
Carolyn Sloan first children's book, illustrated by Fritz Wegner. A great story about Carter who gets painted everyday by Mr. Blot the painter. Wegner's pictures are amazing; I would rank them as some of his best work. This is my favorite children's book and very hard to find.

superb classic English mystery anthology
This twenty-two story collection showcases one of the best classic English mystery writers Catherine Aird, whose skill in providing her audience with a somewhat witty, intelligent who-done-it shines throughout the anthology. The tales include ten great Detective Inspector Sloan stories with the usual help from Constable Crosby and guidance from Superintendent Leeyes (see AMENDMENT OF LIFE for a strong novel starring the unflappable English detective). Also there are three strong stories starring Henry Tyler of the Foreign Office and three sixteenth century Scottish police procedurals investigated by Sheriff Rhuaraidh Macmillan. The remaining six contributions display Ms. Aird's talent in various subgenres whether it is Foreign Service, historical or a contemporary police procedural. Title aside, CHAPTER AND HEARSE AND OTHER MYSTERIES is a superb anthology that fans of the author will appreciate and send newcomers seeking Ms. Aird's backlist.
