It just has it all!
Anne Sloan has surely done well with this book. Definitely a "practical guide". I have loads of these kind of books, but this is the first one to show so many ideas in easy to understand directions. Great techniques not seen in other books. And great suggestions for tools.

Great introduction to different forms of stenciling
Wonderful book for a stenciler who would like to learn all the different ways to stencil as well as stamping. Well written with lots of clear pictures and instructions. Highly recommended to the beginer as well as those who are tired of dry brush stenciling. All the techniques give wonderful results. I have tried every single technique in the book with great success the first time around.

A review from Shannon!
I saw SUE in Chicago last week. In this book I learned that SUE was named after Susan who found the fossils. Susan had a dog named Gypsy. They kept on digging up duck-billed dinosaurs. Sue's boned weighed 4 tons!! The Field Museum bought it for over eight million dollars! SUE is a T.rex. I think that SUE did fight with other dinosaurs. SUE is 67 million years old! I was happy to see SUE in Chicago and to read this book!

Sue
Dinosaurs are a hot topic right now...and A Dinosaur Named Sue: The Find of the Century really teaches young kids about the job of a paleontologist--in a positive light. SUE, the most complete T. rex fossil ever found, is an amazing discovery, both educationally AND on basis of interest, and children should definitely read all they can about this dinosaur. This book approaches SUE on the level of a 3rd grader, yet the language and subject matter are intelligient enough for a parent to find interesting--maybe even to learn from! I definitely did!

Historical Dictionary of Terrorism

An Essential Reference
This book is an essential reference for those that are involved in researching terrorism. As the below reviewer cites, there is a timeline of key events and an A-Z of terms and organizations, as well as a very extensive bibliography/recommended reading section. I use this book so often, that it no longer has a place on the shelf, it sits on my desk. A very impressive effort on the authors' part. Outstanding.

Terrorism from A to Z
The Historical Dictionary of Terrorism by Sean Anderson and Stephen Sloan provides a ready reference into the multifaceted topic of terrorism. The authors literally go through the breadth of terrorism from A to Z--including informative entries on groups, concepts, individuals. The work includes an extensive bibliography that is helpful in continuing research on the listed topics. The Dictionary also contains a chronology of significant incidents, ideas and personalities pertaining to terrorism from A.D. 66 to 1994. This 450 page work has been an essential reference tool for me as an analyst and an academic. I have used the Dictionary to refresh my memory of groups and individuals as I write, as well as, before I teach a college class on issues of terrorism. While I would like more depth on some of the entries, the entries provide enough material to answer most of my questions, or at least point me in the right direction. It is one of my most used books in my terrorism library.

H2$ Is An Incredible Show
The musical score for How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (H2$) is great. I can't imagine a better storyline or score. Among the songs in H2$, specail attention should be paid to Paris Original, Coffee Break, and Brotherhood of Man. Strength in these areas can really make or break any production of this show. I believe that in addition to the 1961 recording, the 1995 recording is also a valuable tool for gaining insight as to how many of the songs can/should be performed. Even though the 1995 recording does not follow the original score exactly, it is my preference. I hope that you can succeed with SUCCEED. Enjoy!

Wonderful for school productions! (click for advice)
First, the score itself: well, what can I say? It's a standard score, printed clearly on good paper, which has a slight tendency to fall out from the binding when put to hard use, so I recommend hole-punching the whole thing and putting it into a binder before beginning a production. Unlike a lot of piano scores being written these days (such as, say, Crazy For You,) this one is actually playable by one person. There are nine chorus numbers, of which only four are of any difficulty at all: "Coffee Break," "A Secretary Is Not A Toy," and "Brotherhood of Man" are the production numbers, "Cinderella, Darling" is the women's number with little dancing. The recording which is truest to the score and (probably) the composer's intentions is the 1961 version which was recorded only 8 days after the production first opened. This recording also gives insight into how Finch (the main character) was conceived-- much more brash, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (for a Chipmunk!) than the Matthew Broderick revival recording, which attempts to make this a 1990's musical, which it is not and was never meant to be. Compare, for instance, the score and '61 recording of Miss Jones in "Brotherhood of Man" with the 1995 version. The voice and music are completely different, and so, consequently, is the character. If you are someone involved in a production, or just someone who loves this show, feel free to let me know. I'm the vocal director of Vanderbilt University's musical program, and we're putting it on in spring of 2000. Feel free to write me and tell me why I'm right or wrong about this musical (which I've so far studied but not actually produced).

An extremely well presented atlas of a significant artist
This compilation of Jeanette Pasin Sloan's paintings display the aesthetics of her color and form together with an interesting twist on the common place subject matter. Equally interesting is the biographic sketch impacting her maturation as an accomplished, well-recognized artist.

--A VERY ENJOYABLE ATLAS OF GORGEOUS PAINTINGS THAT HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY WELL PRESENTED.

Underscored with an informative text by Gerrit Henry
The artwork of Jeanette Pasin Sloan's took a distinctly contemporary approach to design and color, employing strong forms, vertiginous arrangements of patterned fabrics, and distorting reflections. Her work also evolved from a use of complex patterning through a period of brilliant color to the elegant formal brio and subtle tonalities. During the 1980s, she did a series of still lifes using brand-name consumer items reflecting the interests and tastes of that materialistic decade. An outstandingly presented contribution to any personal or academic art history collection, Jeanette Pasin Sloan's work is underscored with an informative text by Gerrit Henry that combines biography, description of her working methods, and a critical analysis of her accomplishments.

An engaging story about dreams and about growing up
Keeper by Holly Goldberg Sloan is an engaging novel for young readers ages 9 to 14, about Sasha Beckdell Lewis, a girl who has fears of almost everything in the world. But when her best friend Courtney persuades Sasha to join the 8th Grade soccer team, Sasha learns what fun sports can be and begins to discover her own true potential beyond her many fears. Keeper is enthusiastically recommended as an engaging story about dreams and about growing up.

"Keeper" is a real keeper!
As the mother of a young teenage girl, I am so grateful to find a book like Holly Goldberg Sloan's "Keeper." It's hilariously funny, smart, lively, and a real page turner, too -- full of engaging characters and full of heart. There are not enough books out there like this one for young adult audiences. Keep writing books like "Keeper" -- we need them!

Every Fan Of Low Brow Needs this book
This book is one of the finest art books I've ever purchased. The printing is excellent, the art is the best collection of the Clayton Brothers work that I've seen. The reading is insightful and well thought out. Even if you have never seen the Rob or Christian's work you still need this book.

Most Important Book on Saving our Fisheries and Oceans!
If you are looking on how to improve your fishing methods or where-to-go fishing, Stephen Sloan's Ocean Bankruptcy is not the book. Steve has taken the pulse of our oceans repeatedly through the years, and let me tell you something: this book is not only for anglers, but for everyone on earth who is concerned about our fisheries, our environment, our oceans, our earth.
Every decade a book comes along that alerts us to various problems that face our world.
Ocean Bankruptcy is the environmental book for the present decade. Compares with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in importance.
With the tremendous demand for seafood around the world, huge commercial longline boats are raping our oceans for quick profits. Unless something is done, and done quickly, our oceans may never recover.
Sloan is not afraid to duke it out with wealthy individuals, influential friends, powerful lobbies and he even takes on countries themselves. He names names. I've never read a more gutsy environmental book; Steve is lucky to be alive! There is mystery, intrigue, deception, tension so the book is a real page turner, but, more importantly, it is absolutely necessary reading if we are to save our oceans.
Sloan is one of our best, most versatile anglers today. He has done it all. Fished everywhere. H e could enjoy fishing the world's best places for the rest of his life; instead he is greatly concerned about the future of the oceans and devotes most of his time, energies and resources to help save our fisheries.
CNN, 60 Minutes, Dateline and PBS would do well to interview Sloan regarding Ocean Bankruptcy.
Buy this book immediately... if not sooner.

Eye Opening View of World Fisheries
This fast paced book about the destruction of our world fisheries reads like a Clancy novel, the intrigue alone will amaze you. Best of all Sloan actually comes up with easy solutions to these problems. This is a must read whether you like to fish, eat fish, or are concerned about the environment.

My favorite scrap quilts book
I love scrap quilts and this is my favorite book about them. In fact my copy is very well read and I love to look at the color photos.

Judy Martin covers a wide variety of patterns (traditional to contemporary) and color schemes. There are quilts with just two colors as well as some that use every color on the color wheel. Some quilts are shown in different combinations or sizes.

There is an introduction to scrap quilts and sections about fabric collecting and storing, color choices and the appropriate use of scraps as well as some hints on sewing and cutting efficently. The instructions are well illustrated and easy to view. At the end there is a section of more block patterns that could be made with scraps including some ideas on how to place scraps with each block and the necessary templates for these blocks.

One of the best basic quilt books for intermediate quilters
Judy Martin's "Scrap Quilts" is a great book with superb pictures and extremely well-written directions for a number of beautiful quilts. The quilts include some traditional ones as well as new and innovative ones.
