Sturgis Standard Code Parliamentary Procedure

Best Parliamentary Authority
The Standard Code is a better parliamentary authority then Robert's. It simplifies and modernizes parliamentary authority, making it more accessible to more people. Dump your RONR and get this work.

We don't wear wigs and robes! We're a casual, social club.
If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.

The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.

Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.

As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!

I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.

An alternative to Robert's Rules of Order
One of the best modernised book on the parliamentary procedures.

1st published in 1950, this 3rd edition is revised by the American Institute of Parliamentarians in 1988.Since this publication, many organisations have changed their bylaws to designate it as their parliamentary authority, among them are: American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.

It is the second most popular parliamentary authority after Robert's Rules of Order.

WHAT GROUPS MUST FOLLOW PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? 'All organizations, such as business, cultural, religious, social, fraternal, professional, educational, labor, civil, scientific, medical, and governmental, are subject to the principles and rules of common parliamentary law. All profit and non-profit corporations and associations and the boards, counsels, commissions, and committees of government, must observe its rules.' Sturgis, p. 3.

This book is undoubtedly one of the best and comprehensive works. There is also a chapter which intended especially to aid persons unfamiliar with parliamentary procedure.

To quote Dr. Floyd M. Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritius US Senate: 'It is understandable vocabulary makes it usable by anyone, not just experts in the field. All students of parliamentary procedure should have a copy in their library.'

Bob Sloan "Rocks" !
First let me say, I personally met the author at East Tennessee State University during an author's event. Mr. Sloan and I chatted for many long minutes, his story's in this book came to life, and his storytelling is a true work of art, a talent not often seen.
"Bearskin to Holly Fork: Stories from the Appalachia" is a book no camper, no nature lover, in fact, no one can allow to slip by, it's a true delight. Bob Sloan is a mans, man, straight forward, honest and a refreshing author you'll enjoy.
Good Luck with your book Mr. Sloan; from Jerry D. Coleman author of "Strange Highways".

How could I go wrong?
I figured if Lee Smith wrote an introduction to this book I couldn't go wrong. Boy, was I ever right. Sloan can tell a tale with the best of them. I particularly liked the story of the mother who went to the bootlegger to ask him not to sell any more moonshine to her son. Also the quirky story "Troops" about veterans being haunted by the ghosts of those they'd killed in combat. I read the book last week and various stories continue to pop into my mind several times a day-- I'll have to go back and enjoy reading several of these stories again.

Take an unforgettable trip to the "real" Appalachia...,

Tired of the usual Appalachian stereotypes and prejudices?

Hankerin' for a book that'll whisk you away to the cool mountain air and down-home fun of Appalachia? Son, does Bob Sloan ever have a book for you! A "gen-you-wine", bona-fide paperback vacation that won't insult your intelligence or fail to satisfy your love of simple living and authentic humanity. And it's easy on the wallet, too!

Honest to god (totally secular and non-denominational)! Bob takes you around to a few of his choicest friends and includes you in on all the fun! You get so close to the action that when one of the characters tells a joke you'll almost smell the coffee breath right where you're sitting. ...and, when another character "passes on", you'll get that inward pinch and feel the swell of tears rising in your eyes.

BOTTOM LINE: If you don't love this book, you probably wouldn't like Appalachia or country livin', either. But if mountain mists and tree-carpeted hills bring a smile to your face...if the smell of coal smoke hangin' low in the valleys on a crisp fall evening is among your fondest aromas...if -- given a choice -- you'd just as soon take a "pass" on Heaven and spend eternity in Appalachia...then 'Bearskin to Holly Fork' will be among your most treasured possessions.

Don't let my name fool ya... This is one Malarkey that is tellin' it darn straight!

It's about time
It's about time someone took the time out to celebrate the people that make New York City the beautiful, wonderful place that it is. It's about time someone took the time out to celebrate Queens for the complex, intricate, deeply political, diverse and rich place that it is. It's about time that someone took the time out to illuminate the parts of this town where working people live and congregate and raise their children. This book is a celebration. It is rich with color and culture and compassion. It forces the reader to see immigrants as people, with talent, with kindness in their hearts and with the desire not only to survive but to live. Thank you Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer!!! You have done a great service to society.

I loved this book on so many levels!
The authors did such a great job of creating a truly compelling multimedia piece that one doesn't just read, but experiences! The people are fascinating, the stories are inspiring, and the intriguing photos, creative graphic design and layout really works to enhance the experience. The authors even add helpful and interesting tidbits of information that help give the whole work social-historical perspective. And the CD is a work of art in itself! I couldn't put the book down, couldn't wait to meet the next person and hear their story. Such a great work!

Beauty of diversity
This might be very personal as I am living in Astoria, Queens. However, after reading this book I have a feeling I am no longer alone. Also, it shows hidden or forgotten beauty of our fellow neighbors. The book is full of colors, spices and distant but yet familiar life stories. Crossing the BLVD reminds its readers on things which we are all sharing, and we all have in common - humanity.

If You Have Found this Review, then Go Find this Book!
First the bottom line -- if you've somehow ended up here reading this review, don't blow it now -- find and read this great book! Of course Ice Brothers, written in 1979, is by now a difficult book to locate, but I assure you it is worth the effort. It is the story of how a young man of 22, drawn almost impetuously to the Coast Guard by the onset of war in December 1941, serves, first as executive officer, then as captain of the Arluk, a converted fishing trawler refitted to serve during World War 2 in the icy waters and coast of Greenland. Paul Schuman, the young hero, is shown at the beginning of the story as unsure in his life and marriage, and we watch him during the novel, while continuing to fight internal uncertainties, growing in confidence and competence. But the novel is much more than a story of personal growth -- it is a war novel, with battles and adventure I will not give away here; it is a true story of the sea, and the land (and native peoples) of Greenland; it is a story of memorable characters, including Paul's fellow officer Nathan Green, with his personal private suffering, and probably most of all, "Mad Mowrey," Captain of the Arluk, a character who deseves to be part of the fictional lexicon with the likes of Captain Queeg. There is even a love interest within the novel, as improbable as it may seem. It is a long novel, over 500 pages long, which gives the reader a chance to fully feel the place and time. And, true to the other best works of Sloan Wilson, Ice Brothers is an individual tale about facing enemies, from hostile weather and terrain, to enemy troops and at times even problems within the ship's own sailors, to fighting personal demons of loneliness and self-doubts. This is quite simply a terrific book -- as I started by saying, if you should happen upon this review and have the remotest interest in World War 2 or the sea -- and actually even if you don't -- then (trust me) go find this book. It will be well worth your while, and you will probably end up adding your own superlative review of this book. Come on, let's start a trend!

Must Read For Coasties
Excellent book for Coastguardsmen or for any Veteran for that matter. The realism keeps you reading on and on. I couldn't put it down.

A must read.
I read this book years ago and again recently. It is supurb. If you don't read it you're missing out.

Raven Dance: An odyssey
If someone had told me I would enjoy reading a book about a revolution set in the far future that included supernatural characters, I'd have been surprised. Both ESP and FTL are standard fare in SF, but vampires and even a werewolf aren't. What makes it all the better is that author, Robert Sloan, makes it work. Raven Dance is an epic following a host of characters who battle "against all odd" the faceless, impersonal tyranny of the entrenched, hierarchical bureaucracy of supposedly egalitarian Utopia. With a nod to Heinlein sensibilities and values, Sloan crafts a tale of intrigue and espionage leading to a cultural revolution for personal liberty. His descriptions of FTL (Ander's run) and psionics are fun, engaging, and exciting. I hope you enjoy this action-packed novel as much as I did.

Amazing, What Else Can I Say?
This book was a wonderful read. Not only was it suspensful and exciting, it was also rich and smooth, with a pleasing cadence. It is beautiful.
It also put a strangely sweet spin on familiar topics: vampires, for example, and werewolves.
If you like quality, read this book!

Cool Action, Humour, and Surprises
It takes a lot of imagination, but also a good grasp on what might be possible or could be credible in a fantastic world to write SF. Mr. Sloan shows both in Raven Dance. It's a classic storyline about rebellion, about the fight for freedom. The scenes are action and dialogue driven. Crisp writing, a fine plot, well drawn characters and sumptuous imagery, but best of all: a hero who is ultra-sensual, wise beyond age and capable, immortal and frail, intelligent and still human enough to have ideals and compassion. I particularly enjoyed the flashes of humour...Mr. Sloan surprised me with very funny lines he sprinkled into his narrative. All of this makes for a treat. I can't wait to read Malcolm's next adventures.

Excellent for toddlers
My son loved this book. It has easy to open flaps and he is able to follow the "eyes" from picture to picture.

My son loves this book!!
This is my son's favorite book, since he was about 4 months old. The eyes first attracted him, and captivated his attention. He is eleven months old now, and enjoys reading it over and over. He especially likes opening and closing the flaps, turning the pages, and sticking his fingers through the holes! A definite winner! We are going to try the rest in the series for his birthday and Christmas.

Definitely a Hit!
My son (and I) enjoy reading this book along with the other three Eye Spy books in the series. My son turns all the flaps at the appropriate time. The pages and flaps are very durable which is great since this book gets read over and over. I would definitely recommend this book for your little ones.

A GRAND JEU PHOTOGRAPHER
The surrealism was an unholy movement in french construction of culture. Tonns too much human (passed definition), tonns too much animal (current def) Francesca Woodman as any one of the (Rimbaud, Jean Pierre Duprey, Roger Gilbert-Leconte) brothers in arms involved in the GRAND JEU did not find the time to experience the quest further than its incarnation. Another group at the same time involved itself in the same quest as FW for the body and soul reconciliation through sensations and emotions. Roger Gilbert-Leconte, Rene Daumal, Joseph Sima more than the surrealists were FW's brothers in arms...

fun france I live with an as assumed as a modern woman can be clone of Francesca Woodman

Francesca Woodman, tragic loss.
This book is an excellent collection of the limited work of a young woman who would have dominated American Photography had it not been for her unfortunate demise. It is essential for all serious art photographers
I first saw a retrospective show of her work in Boulder Colorado after her death and it has never left my mind. I find it hard to believe that it has taken this long for a published collection like this to come along.
It is truly remarkable in every way.

Photos that pierce one's heart with a sweet, impossible ache
However remarkable and achingly tender, Woodman images are as rare as a rhinoserous horn at an Asian bazaar. Some years ago a portfolio of Woodman photographs was reprinted. This small handfull of images was reproduced again and again. The group of "known" images grew somewhat as various small books or catalogs were published. The real strength of Woodman as an artist is evidenced by the fact that as every heretofore unseen image gets published, such as in this sizable book, the delicacy, richness, and complexity of Woodman's moltenly beautiful yet hauntingly tragic body of work grows exponentially. The original group of oft-reproduced images is revealed as random sampling of many images of the same captivating quality. There is so much that is not known about this work that each expanded treatment becomes a startling revelation. Gracious thanks to any book that begins to give this most underappreciated genuis suicide her due.

American Love Story
I was simply blown away by this book. A street wise Kid from Philly making it on his own and then winds up in one of the nation's tragic wars only to meet up with a country girl from North Carolina and they both somehow seem to make it all work out and raise a family and grow old together and remained in love for many many years. This book truly runs the gammets of emotions from Pride to anger to sadness. You can really see what an American Love Story this is. Whether it be children's book or A simple love story if it has a story to be written Joesph S Bonsall can surely write about it.

Love, War, Family, and Faith
I have never been a reader of war stories, nor did I know a lot about WWII. However, this book manages to overview the Second Great War and its effect on the U.S., while weaving in a story of love and faith.

Bonsall knows his characters well, because it's his parents' story. His writing is simple yet passionate. A quick read - that you will never forget. The book offers inspiration for the times we live in today.

Enduring faith like none other
There's a song called "Whatever Happened To Old-Fashioned Love," that simply asks where the life-long commitment of a marriage has gone. All-too-easily, people who have one little problem simply give up. This story is for them.

This story is about two post-WW2 veterans who attempt to return to normal life after the war. Permanent scars, both physically and emotionally, never truely allow that to happen, but one thing gets them through these hard times. Love. A love like none other. Through trials that seem almost unbearable and too hard to overcome, G.I. Joe and Lillie persevered. They are true examples of the old saying, "all you need is love."

Joseph Bonsall's writing is superb, and this true story, while brand new, is old as time itself. No matter what came their way, they always had each other. That's all they needed.

Lotus Approach 96 book provides thorough understanding
"Using Lotus Approach 96" (Special Edition) by Cynthia Morgan and Susan Sloan provides the reader with a thorough understanding of Lotus Approach. It is not limited in terms of application to the Approach 96 version. It certainly applies equally well to Approach 97 and probably to the latest version included in the Millenium edition of Lotus SmartSuite. The book is long, more than 600 pages, but many pages are devoted to actual hands on skill building exercises that are extraordinarily helpful. Anyone who expects to use the database application more than casually would, I believe, find this book answers most of his or her questions and probably will keep going back to it as a reference resource.

THE reference manual for all today's Lotus Approach users!!
Having purchased this book in 1997 in an attempt to learn "something" about Lotus Approach, I discovered that not only was this a suitable guide for the novice, it was also a reference manual of some mighty weight. Using this book as a guide I have created several major databases with over 150 macros automating numerous functions. Through this book I have also learned enough about Approach to answer other users queries. It is still in my view the definitive guide to Lotus Approach.

Excellent on the basics for Approach 96, 97, and beyond!
This book takes a step-by-step approach to teaching the basics of database design as well as how to use Lotus Approach effectively. It is written for the "non-programmer" without all of the jargon one usually finds in books of this type. It is also a great reference book - not a "one time read".
