And now, for the kitchen impaired, a cookbook guaranteed to take you from zero to frittata in less than an hour. Dad's Own Cookbook offers culinary neophytes and novice cooks the chance to finally flex a little muscle in the kitchen. For singles who don't cook but are trying to impress a new date, this could be the dating guide of the century.

Joy of Cooking, The New Basics, and Betty Crocker's New Cookbook are all excellent books, but if you think Cuisinart was a movement that followed the French impressionists, they just might be a bit over your head. Author Bob Sloan assumes nothing, and Dad's Own Cookbook covers it all, start to finish. From buying the ingredients to cooking and serving, Sloan offers concise, no-nonsense instruction that strips away intimidation and sends confidence levels soaring. The highlight of this extraordinary cookbook is the recipes. While Sloan assumes you might be inexperienced in the kitchen, he never assumes that you are inexperienced at the table. The recipes are admirable, including such delicacies as Chicken Tortellini with Prosciutto and Tomato Cream Sauce, Baked Salmon with Herb Crust, and Strawberry Mousse. Best of all, Dad's Own Cookbook provides you with the tools you need to put them on the table.

Sloan starts with shopping tips, such as how to read product labels and select fresh produce. (Quick quiz for the experienced cooks out there: how do you tell if an egg is fresh?) He moves on to how to pick knives and pans, and how to measure (under the snappy title "Real Men Do Measure"), prepare, and serve. Along the way, Sloan offers solid advice on selecting a menu, what to prepare in advance, and how to time the cooking so everything comes out just right and at the same time. About the only thing Dad's Own Cookbook leaves out are excuses--when it comes to cooking, you simply won't need them any more. --Mark O. Howerton

indispensible
when i got divorced and my two sons came to live with me, it wasn't long before i realized we couldn't eat out every night. But then, i was the proverbial helpless male...i had never made rice before much less cook dinner regularly, or irregularly. this book is so helpful, so elementary, i couldn't recommend it more for someone who knows absolutely nothing about cooking food. you will not regret owning this book. my boys are now at college but i still find myself referring to it often.

Cooking Basics for the Kitchen-Challenged
My friend Peter was going through a divorce. The first thing he bought for his new apartment was this cookbook, and seven years later, he still swears by it and his kids are well-fed. On the road to culinary perfection, this is the first quarter-mile.

This handy guide to cooking for children includes everything from "How to Pack a Lunch" (page 66) to "How to Read a Recipe" (page 37) and even "Throwing a Birthday Party for Your Child" (page 285). This book is guaranteed to demystify the kitchen!

Most of the recipes in this book are extremely kid-friendly. For example: Six Sandwiches the Kids Will Eat (page 58), Four All-American Lunches (Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Quick Macaroni and Cheese, and Chef's Salad), and Dad's Official Meat Loaf.

The recipes are not strictly limited to kid-friendly fare. The author includes instructions on how to prepare for a cocktail party, with an accompanying "Cheese Primer." The Cocktail Party menu includes recipes for: Miniature Quiches (no, not the frozen kind that come out of a box!), Pate, and even Salmon Caviar!

The book is sectioned into meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Each section includes handy tips and tricks. For example, on page 80 there is a "Beef Basics" diagram which shows you where the different cuts of beef come from. These special sections include blue-tinted "Special Occasion" supplements. An example of this is on page 48, "Breakfast in Bed." This meal consists of Slow Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Sour Cream, and Caviar.

This is an outstanding all-around cookbook. Whether you're just getting started in your own apartment, or settling down with a loved one who longs to share the kitchen with you, this is a great start.

A rare business biography/classic by Alfred P. Sloan Jr.
Alfred P. Sloan Jr. was CEO of General Motors from 1923 to 1946. This book was originally published in 1964. Sloan is seen as the first person to have worked out systematic organization in a big company, planning and strategy, measurements, the principle of decentralization - in short, basic concepts of a discipline of management. This is a difficult book to review, since it is more a historic piece on GM's history and development from Sloan's perspective than an autobiography. It does not discuss the individual Alfred P. Sloan Jr., it discusses Alfred P. Sloan Jr. as professional manager. The chapters also come across as business school lessons in different subjects, ranging from general management through to accounting, marketing and compensation strategies.

The book consists of two parts. "Part One is an integrated continuous story of the main lines of General Motors' progress, involving the origin and development of the corporation's basic management concepts in the areas of organization, finance and product." It discusses the extreme growth and development of the automobile industry from the early 1900s through to the early 1960s. It also discusses the methods General Motors introduced used to manage the corporation (Sloan all through the book keeps emphasizing the concept of the corporation). He later became known as a committee-man, because he used different types of committees to get/keep various divisions talking and working with each other.

"Part Two consists of individually distinct sections dealing in some detail with engineering, distribution, overseas operations, war and defense products, incentive compensation, and other aspects and branches of the enterprise." This part of the book discusses in greater detail the different experiences and events during Sloan's reign as CEO. It discusses some very interesting subjects, such as the evolution of the automobile, relationships with dealers, World War I and II efforts, and personnel and labor relations. Chapter 23 and 24 are really the conclusion to this book.

Yes, this is a great book. It is a TRUE business classic. It discusses all the subjects involved in business from a CEO's point of view. I was amazed to see the amount of detail Sloan has gone through while writing this book, there are plenty of quotes from annual reports, memoranda, conversations, etc. However, some readers will be disappointed by the lack of insight into Sloan's personal life. This particular edition includes an introduction by Peter F. Drucker, who explains why this book is MUST reading for all MBA and business students, but also all people that want to be serious about management. Highly recommended. The book is written in simple business US-English.

Half a century of US history told from GM's perspective
Sloan offers a unique first-hand perspective of the forces that shaped the auto industry and much of consumer marketing.

I found the account of GM's entry into consumer finance and the forces at work during the great consolidation periods of most interest.

Sloan seems to be able to keep his ego in check and deliver the facts in a straightforward manner.

Discussions of the DuPont principles of comparison for unlike businesses and the board politics that shaped General Motors are helpful to executives even today.

Great!!!
I think it's really a great book, not only for any industry engineering people or student, but for any student studying management. Alfred Sloan was a great businessman and I respect him and his business thought.

The Buried Treasure Game
Published in Paperback by Serendipity Pr Inc (January, 2004)

An Amazing Adventure for Everyone!!
What could be more enticing than playing against just time and yourself? It's like a reality show where you are the main character and all you have to do is follow the rules. But, in this show, you can play in your pajamas, not embarrass your family, and still reach your goals. This is a neat book, it's easy to understand and simple to play. With almost 3 million books on Amazon, there is no other book that comes close to pure adventure. Just think of what you can do with $50,000! Stop playing the lottery. Stop going to the casinos. If you really want to make money and have a blast doing it, put in some research and have your family, your school, your work or your community get involved. Don't be surprised when your teenager tells you, "Hey mom, I'm taking the family to Disney World."

The Better Masquerade!
I was an original treasure hunter of the story of Masquerade. I started the game about a year after it was determined that there was an actual treasure hidden. I remember thinking that I had all the information that I needed to find the golden hare. I spent dozens of hours researching and trying to break codes. To tell you the truth, Masquerade was beautifully crafted but when it came down to it, it was both difficult and confusing. This new Buried Treasure Game is hands-down 100 times better. The cool thing is that you don't need to understand elusive cryptograms as in most of the treasure hunts. The questions and clues are very straight forward and the author is right on target when he states that anyone can solve this puzzle. If you like games, puzzles or mysteries, you need to get this book.

Exciting Puzzle Mystery!!
It has been a long time since I was in the library (I think it was high school). I thought the internet would provide me with most of my needs now but I was amazed at how much I was missing. This is a fun book that really has gotten me involved. I have been down to the local library about 5 times now and many of the answers to the 100 questions can be found there. I also like the combination of different types of information that is needed. I love mysteries and what can be better than an actual 300 year old mystery? Puzzles have always intrigued me and I know that this game can be solved. I have a sister living in another state and she was able to identify some information that was really close to her. It seems like a team game and I am hooked. No more lotteries or bingos for me. I want to earn this money and with a little luck and ingenuity, I will. Of course it is not a million dollars, but overall it seems to offer more value because you actually have to work for it. I can't wait to finish all the questions and put the clues together. I wonder where it will lead me in America? Digging up a treasure box is worth the time and effort.

Droll plays with no redeeming value whatsoever.
Tragic, brutal things happen to the characters in these plays. But none of these people is particularly likeable, so you can't really care. It's all just as well for them, in some ways, and it's all in good fun. The characters manipulate each other, lie to each other, steal from each other, screw each other, kill each other, and deny that they do it. Everyone here has the ethics of a doorknob, and it's all pretty enjoyable.

The last one, "What The Butler Saw", got a little bit too ridiculously farcical for my taste and went on too long, but it has its moments; and otherwise they're all pretty good to read.

I can also recommend the introduction. Joe Orton lived his own life very much like the people in his plays (which makes you wonder how much of his material was supposed to be comedy). Even his death was true to form: his envious lover, actor Kenneth Halliwell, bashed in Orton's brains with a hammer just prior to doing himself in with 22 sleeping tablets.

Orton: Without Apology
This collection of (the late) Joe Orton's plays is amazing. Not for those who are easily offended or whose feelings are hurt. Orton, who was described as a "poor Oscar Wilde," lived up to the name. His plays are fast paced assults on everything that the British hold dear. There is no respect for religion, custom, death or social norms.

Satirical and full of quick wit, Orton's plays attack British culture and spit on everything that the "respectable person," would hold dear.

Orton does not hold back anything and could come on a bit strong for a conservative reader, but my suggestion is that any lover of drama and theater should own and read these plays.

Joe Orton: Forever Relevent
Beaten to death by his male lover in 1967, Joe Orton has been rediscovered as an intriguing look into the mind and soul of a man who lived ahead of his times. His plays are fascinating and have so many layers that you can enjoy them repeatedly. He also wrote a screenplay for the Beatles, which was never filmed (according to the dustjacket). Now wouldn't that be interesting!

Surprise!! A Riveting Read!
I picked this up on an anonymous recommendation and am now wholeheartedly praising it to anyone who will listen! The author, Craig Canine, has fashioned a page-turning, suspense-filled, dramatic telling of an entreprenuer's struggle, laced with a suprisingly fascinating history of the development of modern agricutlure. Not just for business-school types or farmers, it is a tale well-told and absolutely worthy of the high rankings you are seeing here.

Delightful Story of Invention
_Dream_Reaper_ is a delightful tale of two cousins--a mechanic and a salesman in their endeavors to develop a more compact design for the harvesting combine and market the concept through a sponsor. The struggle of Mark Underwood in creating the Bi-Rotor machinery to reduce grain spillage and parts clutter provides a glimpse into the hardships of inventors. The insightful interpersonal skills of Ralph Lagergren reveal a confidence in not settling for corporate comfort, but in taking a big risk for a big payoff.

In intervening chapters, Canine diverts from the story to introduce the history of harvesting and its mechanization . The reader learns of many fascinating conversation topics, such as the etymology of "tribulation", a patent infringement lawsuit on a reaper that launched Abraham Lincoln's political career, the corn growing experiments of Henry Wallace, or the genetic differences between grains and weeds enabling an aromatic compound to kill the latter without affecting the former. Whether one is interested in agriculture, machinery, history, Canine's prose makes the book a pure joy to read.............

Wonderful Book!
This is one of those rare books that makes you realize that there is a history and great story behind every invention. Mr Canine does an incredible job at showing this to us, as well as the implications that an invention has in the long run. Truly an incredible book. I hope to see more of this authors work!

Raymond Austin A WINNER WITH "DEAD AGAIN"
I finished this book Dead Again at 4am this morning. I had to force myself to put this one down (just twice).

There's lots of details, and well delineated characters
I found the premise very believable, the storyline believeable, and perhaps most of all, the characters were believeable. Why sould I be surprised, Austin always hooked me in as a director . . .So why not with a book?

Read this book you'll like it if you like strong characters, I'm off to the bookstore to buy The Eagle Heist Austin's frist book.

DEAD AGAIN A WINNER FOR AUSTIN
I picked up Austin's first book The Eagle Heist this summer. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. It sounded a lot like a Spencer novel, and he's PI is not one of my favorite. I was very surprised when I finished the book in about three days. I've been waiting for Dead Again his next book every since, but I have only just picked it up. It petty much picks up right where the Eagle Heist and Beauford Sloan left off in the first novel.
I think the characters are what makes the books so good. Austin has created a very real bunch,Beauford is very real. Austin's writing is excellant and the pace of the books is good, it just flies. I was hooke in both books from the first page. It never drags like some do in the middle. All over all this is one good read!I'm already waiting for Austin's next, there has to be one?

A WINNWE BY AUSTIN. "DEAD AGAIN"
I meet this author Raymond Austin while he lectured on a recent cruise. I knew of his work as a television director and found his lecture very interesting and in lighting. I have now read both his books. "Dead again," is a wonderful book two in the Beauford Sloan series for those of us who love a good mystery and hate all the sex and violence that is put into the books for NO REASON. He had a little sex in number one "The eagle heist," but petite. "Dead again," like the first will have you on the edge of your seat and make you feel like you really know the characters. A great mystery, ideal for a stormy night. Why Austin never took to the pen before I know not.

Helped us nip a lot of things in the bud!
Any pre-marital preparation and counseling is a good idea in my book, but this is something special. While we were engaged and living in different cities, my wife and I went through this workbook individually chapter by chapter and discussed our responses over the phone. So many topics came up that we would never have thought to be major issues for us to deal with! The particular strength of this book over some others is the authors' emphasis on families of origin. We each bring so much baggage and so many expectations into the marriage that comes from our families where we grew up! Many books ignore this, but Sloan and Hardin wisely forced us to look hard beyond puppy love and into real-life commitment. I get the feeling the authors have seen their share of wrecked marriages, have traced the problems, and have used that knowledge in the creation this book. Highly recommended.

I'll tell you why this is a great book.
Yes, this is a good book, why ? Simply because you and your fiancee LEARN A LOT ! In my case, we decided to break up for a while to think again about our true "love". Emotional love exists, but friendship love is not consolidated and of course Commitment love is far away. However, we did not realized this before and in fact we were preparing to get married ! We even attended one special 2 day session with other couples to discuss the most important aspects of marriage, however we kept thinking on getting married until we did all the questionaries and discuss the differences. Wow ! I never imagined there's still so much to learn from our relationship and so much differences. Believe me. If you are one of those persons who really care and think about a relationship beyond the typical "being in love" stuff, then you should get this book and ensure a good decision. Trust me, the price is worth ! Thanks Jerry & Dianne

Great Dialog Starter and Ministry Tool!
My husband and I used this book during our premarital counseling at my church and it was GREAT! It stirred up heated discussions as well as allowed us to clearly see what was ahead for us in marriage. The book alone is great but having a pastor or elder to act as a third party to the activities in the book really made the
experience more meaningful! The ulimate goal in our marriage is for God to be glorified, and this book exposes the areas in your life you have yet to submit to the Lord as well as those you need to submit further.

A Super Read
This Review lead me to Raymond Austin. (It is right it is.)

BOOKLIST AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Fans of the classic British television series The Avengers and The Saint may recognize the author',s name: as Ray Austin, he directed episodes-of-those serve; as well as many other British and American shows, This is his first novel, and it's ideally suited for the small screen. An armored car is hijacked, seemingly snatched out of thin air, and Virginia's Beauford Sloan, retired-cop-turned-private-detective, is hired to find out whodunit. Sloan, who closely resembles the actor Wilford Brimley, is a remarkably likable character. (The resemblance is no coincidence: Brimley and the author are friends, and Brimley has expressed his desire to play the detective in the anticipated television movie based on the novel. He has also written an introduction to the book.) In fact, everything about the novel is remarkably likable; perhaps because he spent decades in the world of moving pictures, Austin knows how to create detailed characters, dialogue that is both memorable and realistic, and an exciting plot. An excellent debut and a real find.

David Pitt

fast paced
A great summer read, fast paced, with characters that you care about. I liked Sloan so much, I want to see what else he does. A third book is coming out soon, can't wait! This would make a great movie!!

A Must Read!
I was totally captivated right from the start how the incredible "Eagle Heist" went down. You'll have to read to know what I mean! This book was fabulous! Right until the end I could not figure out who masterminded this incredible heist. Raymond Austin does an amazing job of creating a visual masterpiece in his first book. It must be made into a movie! I'm looking forward to the next in his series, "Dead Again."

The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal

While it's true that no one person's vision encompassed all of what we now consider personal computing, we can't help but focus on individual effort as we try to understand how we got here. Science writer M. Mitchell Waldrop carefully balances this hero culture with a historian's mania for completeness in The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal.

"Lick," as his students and colleagues called him, was deeply involved in guiding the evolution of personal and networked computing from the 1950s through the 1980s, after leaving a career in cognitive psychology. Waldrop captures his spirit vividly--contrary to our stereotypical view of computer scientists, Licklider was profoundly interested in his fellow humans, and this interest helped him lead the design of technology adapted to human needs.

Waldrop interviewed dozens of contemporaries and examined reams of notes and primary sources to compose this massive biography of influence that stretches from MIT to the Pentagon to Xerox PARC and far beyond. If it sometimes seems that Licklider was a little too well beloved, especially in comparison to some of the more colorful figures in computing's recent history, it is worth remembering that his patience and humility were the very qualities that helped deliver the home-computing revolution we take for granted today. If we had to choose just one 20th-century computer pioneer that we couldn't do without, it would have to be the man behind the Dream Machine. --Rob Lightner

Average review score:

Where it all came from
For anyone interested in why computers and the net are the way they are today, this entertaining and well-written account is essential. Using Licklider as the fulcrum, it covers the origins of computer science, interactive computing, and the internetworked PC world we live with today in a very personal way. It provides an insight into how these ideas evolved and how the personalities behind them animated that evolution. It is admittedly a very MIT/ARPA centric history, but given that's where many of these ideas had their genesis, it does a good job of covering a large amount of the territory of modern computing history. The one question the book leaves unanswered is why the field has not evolved further in the last twenty years. After all, as Waldrop demonstrates, the seeds of what we take for granted today were demonstrably in place 20-25 years ago.

Best History of Computer Science
Everyone has heard about the amazing ideas and systems from Xerox PARC, but few realize that this lab was was the culmination of JCR Licklider's vision of personal, interactive computing, not its birthplace. Licklider provided the vision and impetus to form the ARPA-funded core of computer science research, which lead to Douglas Englebart's windows and mice, Xerox PARC's innovations, and the Internet. The next time that you hear someone saying that government can't do anything well, give them a copy of this book.

This book is a fascinating, well-written exposition of Licklider's life and work, and even more interestingly, the birth of computer science in the United States. I've never before seen this story as a continuous whole, as opposed to a collection of independent breakthroughs. It is a fascinating narrative, and this is a great book.

A computer chronology that reads like a novel
If The Dream Machine were a novel, you might conclude the author used every writer's technique to make it a thriller. Even though you know the outcome, you wonder how the many "miracles" and lucky breaks it took for the dream to become reality.

Make your own web page!
I already had a web site when I got this book...but I got itanyway to see if I would learn anything new. Wow, I did, and it's a great book. The directions are really simple, and it lets you make a great web site. They have step by step instructions to make a sample web site that really exists... It's really neat!

Absolutely the best!
My 10 yr old ordered this book through his school and was able to build his own web-site in less than a week. Absolutely fantastic! I had been trying to teach him HTML and web-page design for quite a while and was getting nowhere. This book accomplished that effortlessly. It presents step by step instructions (and manages to keep the content interesting and engaging all the time). The book is easy to read with plenty of useful examples and insight. There should be follow-ons for this book - leading to advanced HTML (and related) techniques for designing and implementing web pages.

Great beginner website building book!
I bought this book at my sixth grade book fair at my school. It was my first introduction to HTML and web design, and I've been constantly designing websites ever since. The book is fun to read and is easy to follow, and within a week I had a website already created that had my personal picture, my personal biography, and my favorite links.
