Informative, interesting, and detailedAlthough somewhat out-of-date (frequently referring to the physiological and psychological developments of the 1970s), this book provides a thorough account of Ivan Pavlov's life and his research in physiology and behavior.

Schopenhauer's influence on T.S. EliotI am writing a research thesis on how Schopenhauer influenced T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets," so this book showed how T.S. Eliot read and discussed Schopenhauer in the Seminar (p. 120). Eliot was one of nine other people taking the seminar with Josiah Royce and he was clearly influenced by his reading and discussion of Kant and post-Kantian philosophers in his writing.

Holographic BrainI have no words to say every thing about this book. A new conception of perception of the reality, a new way of observing the things... the brain is not that we usually studied in the books.... In some apprenticeship it interprets the things as a hologram. Who has interest of learning more on the operation of the brain cannot stop reading this book.

Bringing reflective processes into practical everyday usageThis book is a must for people involved in teacher education where long lasting change is desired. It gives a whole range of strategies a teacher, facilitator or lecturer can use to encourage people to think more deeply about what they are doing and what they are thinking/feeling. What puts this book above many others in the area of reflective process, is that it is worded in easy to understand, and easy to employ language. It gives you many ideas for using reflection in a variety of ways. Brilliant!

A very useful and well-researched approachExpertly written by Maryellen Weimer (Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning, Berks-Lehigh Valley College, Pennsylvania State University), Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes To Practice is an invaluable resource for college and university educators concerning the learner-centered teaching approach that takes into account what, how, where, and what conditions under which students are learning. Individual chapters convincingly address implementation and fine-tuning adjustments to adopting the learner-centered teaching style, and the appendices include a syllabus, sample learning log, and more. A very useful and well-researched approach, Learner-Centered Teaching is an important and strongly recommended addition to Educational Reference collections and Classroom Instruction reading lists.

As seen in Deepak Chopra's Infinite Possibilities newsletterRozman teaches children to center in the heart, which puts them in touch with the depth of their own being. By using the heart as the primary focus for centerning and concentration, children balance their mental, physical, and emotional natures, self-esteem expands, decision-making skills improve, and the ability to concentrate increases. Guided imagery, yoga, creative fantasy, movement, psychology, and love are used to give form to the inner spiritual qualities inherent in youth, resulting in happier, more caring children who may communicate the truth of their hearts.

Superb ReadI know that it sounds strange that a book on research methodology could be interesting, but this is the one. Easy reading. Covers all phases of the thesis and dissertation process. Written by folks who have actually written them and who are currently supervising those are are going through this difficult and challenging process. Many practical and thought-provoking comments, tips, and suggestions. It was recommended as part of my PhD dissertation preparation course work. Read it!! You will not be dissapointed.

This is a book that could save the World. This book presents a mind-blowing revelation on every page, and yet you will recognize everything in it from your everyday life. That is what makes it so chilling. Milgram demonstrates in definitive experiments how typical people recruited from off the street can, using no more than a veneer of authority, easily be persuaded to commit torture and even murder on innocent victims. The book thereby essentially explains the psychological mechanics of the Nazi and other concentration camps, the Death Squads in El Salvador and across the World, and the many other forms of atrocity that have become so characteristic of the 20th Century, this "Century of barbed wire and watchtowers". Ever wonder how you can find air force pilots willing to drop the bombs to start a nuclear holocaust? Answer: It's the easiest thing in the World! A certain percentage of the population will have the proper psychological profile, and you just select them. If psychologists and social scientists really wanted to know what are the ruling principles of civilization and what are the sources of so many of its ills, they'd be running experiments like Milgram's year-round in labs across the planet. Instead, very little work of this kind has since been done. Why? Because it's considered "ethically questionable"! In a classic case of "kill the messenger", the very man who shows us concretely how torture has been so thoroughly integrated into the political structure and who exposes the blatant hypocracy of our rulers, is accused of abusing his subjects and of betraying their trust! In the back of the book Milgram, by the way, faces all ethical objections head-on and refutes them all convincingly. Buy this book if you want to find out what is "really going on", but you may be upset by what you find.

Wonderfully readable and usefulI have a fair amount of experience as a qualitative researcher (still lots to learn). I have also twice taught a qualitative research methods class for undergraduates. Based on my research experience, my knowledge of other research texts, and my experience and needs as a teacher, this is a terrific book. I am very glad I found it and recommend it without hesitation to other researchers, would-be researchers, and teachers of qualitative research methods, undergraduate or graduate.
Esterberg does a great job of presenting the essential approaches, techniques, and issues, in a very easy-to-read style. As a teacher, it was a pleasure to be able to assign a chapter to my students knowing that it would not be overly long, that they could read it with little difficulty, and that Esterberg presented what I wanted them to know. I didn't have to supplement to make up gaps, tell them to skip sections because the author tried to be encyclopedic, or spend a lot of time in class explaining portions that were unclear. I could instead build on what they read and focus on their actually learning what Esterberg presented.
Now if I could only find a text that does the same for quantitative methods...
