Besides this book Celestin Freinet has many more and there's a whole movement about his pedagogie. There are many schools around the world practicing education through work and kids really love it. We recognize the importance of affective education, freedom.. We develop not just cognitive skills but also affective skills in the classroom, where more learning takes place. An Education Track for Creativity and Other Quality Thinking Processes

A Clarion Call for Reform
I have had the unique opportunity not only to read this short but topical book, but also to have heard Ms. Bleedorn speak at the recent American Creativity Association Conference. In a series of interesting essays, she makes a strong case for the need to introduce the formal teaching of thinking skills and creativity tools into the school curriculum.

As a former school board member and as the husband of an elementary school teacher, I endorse this stand heartily.

OK, the essays get a little repetitive from time to time, but sometimes repetition is necessary to drive the point home. A lesson known to every teacher in America.

I teach some of the material Ms. Bleedorn discusses and I'm adding her book to my bibliography of worthy further reading. I also intend to buy copies of her book to present to participants. That's how strongly I feel about the great service she is trying to do for teachers and school children across the nation.

Hands-on and concise; brilliant
I've taught experimental psychology many times with many different books. This book, however, is my favorite because it focuses on work as done by practicing researchers. The content is well-thought out and is short enough to not overwhelm the students. The two chapters of design critiques are excellent assignments in critical thinking. Most of all, the reproduced and annotated research articles are a gift. APA style is hard for students to understand, so the expository style helps tremendously. I hope this book never goes out of print.

Really good
A unique introductory book in statistics. The hallmark of this book is nodoubt the clarity of detailed explanations of fundamental statistical concepts. A lot of invaluable material and explanantions here not to be found in other textbooks on statistics!
Highlights that spring to my mind are the excellent treatments of averages, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing. A very important topic (usually missing in most textbooks) is the strength of evidence in hypothesis and significiance testing and is treated very nicely in various parts of the books. This book should not be missed by beginners (and probably experts) in the field.

Holistic Education: An Analysis of Its Ideas and Nature (The Foundations of Holistic Education Series, V. 8)

Summary of Holistic Education: An Analysis of Its Ideas...
I used this book in its earlier manuscript form to help with framing my dissertation research, and found it very informative, practical, and scholarly. What follows is a brief summary from a small newsletter that I compile in affiliation with the Foundation for Educational Renewal.

Just Released: "Holistic Education:
An Analysis of Its Ideas and Nature,"
Foundation book by Scott H. Forbes
**************************************

Holistic education has been emerging as a coherent movement since the late 1970s, but its intellectual roots extend back nearly 250 years. In this book, Dr. Scott H. Forbes examines the philosophical sources of holistic education through an intensive analysis of the writings of six authors whose ideas encompass its core principles: Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Jung, Maslow and Rogers.

This book is for scholars and students in educational foundations who wish to more fully understand the conceptual basis of an emerging educational theory that challenges many assumptions underlying conventional schooling. Forbes demonstrates that holistic educators are concerned with Ultimacy-that is, with the fullest possible development of human potentials. Their view of teaching and learning therefore extends well beyond traditional academic goals. He explores how the six authors variously defined ultimate human development and offered diverse pedagogical strategies for achieving it.

Scott H. Forbes has worked for more than thirty years in the field of holistic education, much of that time at the Brockwood Park Krishnamurti Educational Centre in England. He is the founder of a holistic school in Portland, Oregon, and continues to be involved in research as well as teacher development. Holistic Education is adapted from his doctoral thesis at the University of Oxford.

The foreword to the book was written by Dr. John Wilson, a widely-known philosopher in education. Wilson writes, "I am very pleased to be able to commend this book to what I hope will be a very wide range of readers... It is, to the best of my knowledge, the best (perhaps the only) attempt to give the idea and practice of holistic education a serious philosophical underpinning" and he goes on to explain why that is important. He says that it would be valuable to read even for those who might be antagonistic to holistic education due to this "coherent ideal which has to be taken seriously" and the "overwhelming strong case" that has been made for holistic education, on intellectual grounds. The book essentially gives conceptual shape to the wide-ranging experiences of holistic educators. Wilson states that, "inevitably the ideal of holistic education is based ultimately upon a certain picture of human nature and the human condition; and that is relevant to the life of any and every human individual."

A classic work in the annals of psychology
First printed in 1933, Hypnosis And Suggestibility: An Experimental Approach by Clark L. Hull (1884-1952) is a classic work in the annals of psychology and describes the rigorous scientific experimental methods which helped establish the behavioral view of hypnosis as an exact science. Long out of print, and now made available by CrownHouse Publishing Limited, Hypnosis And Suggestibility is especially recommended for personal and academic reference collections as being a studious, extensively detailed, college-level text that transcends the test of time.

Internet research starts here
This easy-to-read book gives readers step-by-step directions on how to create Web pages and on-line surveys. Furthermore, it guides readers through the processes of posting psychological experiments on the Internet. The best part is that prior programming experience is not necessary!

Before reading this book, I thought Web-page creation was reserved for the computer savvy, which I am not. However, by the time I got to Chapter 5 (chapters are very short, by the way), I had created a colorful Web page, which included graphics, links, and tables. By the end of the book, I had learned how to create on-line questionnaires and how to write some basic JavaScript, which I used to create an on-line experiment.

The book is complimented by a CD-ROM that contains examples for each chapter and links to HTML and JavaScript tutorials, downloadable software, psychological experiments, graphics, and more. Overall, this book is a valuable resource for students, teachers, and professionals interested in learning the "basics" of Web-page development and conducting psychological research on the Internet.
