Not just for WaldorfiansI have dusted the cobwebs off of so many forgotten childhood memories since reading this book. This book has also been excellent for encouraging me to play more imaginatively with my kids. Children At Play is an unexpected life altering book.
Really quite thought provoking...all parents should read this and do what they can to foster real play in their children. This book makes me realize just how many plastic toys my daughter has in her room, how stain-free her clothes are because she doesn't like to get dirty, and how much she is missing because of all of that. She needs to get outside more, fly more kites (read the book, then you'll know about kites!), dig more dirt, bring home more bugs and animals and make up her own rules and her own games. Many well-intentioned parents (myself among them) are doing more harm than good to their kids by 'teaching' them how to play, enrolling them in organized activities, keeping them away from 'germs', and filling their rooms with stereotyped plastic toys. Yikes! What are we doing? I am so very glad I bought this book, and if anything I have said in this review strikes a chord with you, then please buy a copy for yourself. I know you won't be disappointed. You'll be inspired. (If you like this book, check out "A Day in the Garden" by Bettina Steitencron -- it is a wordless picture book favorite of ours!)

Practical, Comprehensive "Tool Kit" for ConflictThis excellent workbook for handling interpersonal conflict has been reprinted over thirteen times since it was originally published in 1989, and enjoys international recognition as one of the most practical "tool-kits" for achieving win/win resolutions. There are twelve "tools" in the kit. Just as a tool has many uses, so these skills can be transferred across diverse spheres of activity. The skills you teach a young child are basically the same ones needed by an international diplomat. One morning at 7:00 a.m. you'll pull out a "tool" for a problem in the kitchen, and find yourself needing it again in a difficult meeting at 11:00 a.m. The book presents everyday examples and stories that reflect the variety of contexts and the transferability of skills. Issues dealt with include: creative response, empathy, assertiveness, co-operative power, managing emotions, mapping conflict, negotiation/mediation, and broadening perspectives. There is also a helpful Conflict Checklist in the Appendices to analyze a problem in detail or to decide which tool is most needed in a situation. This is an indispensable reference for leaders who must frequently deal with conflict.
Everyone Can WinThis is one of the best books on conflict resolution I have seen. It is practical, easy to read, makes conflict understandable and laughable, and covers the key underlying problems inherent in most conflict scenarios. Most people view conflict as an out and out battle. Clues and levels of conflict are discussed and tools anyone can use are included. I had used their earlier version for an under-graduate (college level) course I taught from 1992-1998 and the book always received rave reviews. Delightful book for a difficult topic!

Simply a classicThis text is a great purchase for any student who will be designing and performing experiments as part of his or her own research. For example, a Ph.D. student in marketing who is studying consumer behavior should read this book. As a matter of fact, it would be a great "prep" book to read before showing up to a Ph.D. program (again, only if the research program will involve performing experiments).
It's expensive, it must be good, right?I have used this book as a graduate student doing social science research. The editorial reviewers got it right; Kirk emphasizes logical explanation, although computational equations are presented in tandem. The book is so expensive because it's so thick and thorough. Everything's here. You won't have to buy a bunch of other books. Just about everything to do with ANOVA and modeling is in here. A good resource.

Clear and understandableA great text on this topic
Excellent TextbookThe authors do an excellent job of bringing together the essential information without overwhelming the reader. The book has many features which help the student bring the information together--outlines, study tables, and excellent review exercises. I highly recommend this book to any teacher or student teaching or taking a psychology class in tests and measurements.

A book for all who love teachingI'm writing to you to tell you that the book is not out of print! At least my local bookseller quoted me £23 for it only yesterday!
I rate the book very highly, and the reason I want a copy is so that I can present it to my daughter on her graduation as a teacher. If you confirm to me that it is out of print I shall go back to my bookseller (who may, of course, be wrong!).
Best regards,Paul
humanistic education living and breathingHumanistic education alive and well!! Did John Dewey start this lineage, or does it go back farther still? This book is both an introduction and an advanced course in the heart and soul of relating to students as individuals, not classes. Following Carl Roger's death, H. Jerome Freiberg co-wrote this Third Edition at the invitation of Roger's daughter. Freiberg keeps the best of the old and supplements it with up-to-date research. His touch is so deft and his philosophy so congruent with Roger's that I had trouble telling one author's voice from the other's as they alternated first-person chapters. One chapter is a summary of Aspy and Roebuck's Kid's Don't Learn from People They Don't Like, a hard-to-find out-of-print book that provides some surprising (to me) statistical support for humanistic education. Freiberg also cites Arthur Combs, author of A Personal Approach to Teaching: Beliefs That Make a Difference, another out-of-print book that with Zen-like simplicity cuts through all the debate about teaching technique to reveal that it's how teacher's FEEL about students, not so much what they do, that creates healthy learning places for people to grow. I highly recommend FREEDOM TO LEARN, and it also contains a wealth of resources for teachers wishing to follow this "path with a heart."

Writing and RememberingThat's a fact the pshycological tests don't use this kind of evaluation. However in the educational field there's some important factors to use this strategy. With this method we can reach some points of the development of writing in the youth.

A Psychology ClassicThis is one of the classic texts of experimental psychology and a must-read for memory researchers. It introduces the concept of a "schema" and includes multiple landmark studies. It is easy to read, including many examples and illustrations. It should be on every psychologist's shelf next to James' Principles of Psychology and Ebbinghaus' Memory (which, interestingly, is the inspiration for Bartlett's title; Bartlett considered human memory dynamic, thus the verb form contrasting with Ebbignhaus' storehouse view). Don't ignore these and other classic texts in your study of modern experimental psychology!

really goodvery very good. Very good for class. Thorough information. Useful.
Reader-friendly book with incredible on-line support.A book that helps students make sense of research methods. The book uses clear examples, summary tables, end-of-chapter glossaries that define key terms and explain the relationships between terms, and a very simple writing style. In addition, students and professors can access free computerized tutorials as well as web pages for each chapter by going to the book's home page at http://spsp.clarion.edu/RDE3/Start/RDE3start.html

Second Book in Series as Good as PredecessorFor starters, read the reviews of Flash Bang Pop Fiz! to get an idea about the strengths of this series. The second book is written in the same format and is an equally valuable tool for young and aspring scientists. While life science activities typically lack the "WOW!" of physical science, there is much in this book to keep youngsters engaged. Once again, the author gives her readers serious experiments that they can take as far as they desire. The illustrations are fantastic; the qoutes and jokes may be a bit surprising, but they are worth reading on their own. For a second time, the author has designed a book that will appeal to a wide range of readers, without sacrifcing serious (and unusually accurate) content.
Five Element BookAfter I read this book I was amazed at everything from the quality of the writing and the captivation of the experiments to the jokes and proverbs placed on the pages time to time. It was easy to read, not at all hard to understand.
In baseball, a player who can do "everything" is called a five-tool player. The "tools" are speed, fielding, contact hitting, power hitting, and the strength of the player's arm. Now, if there was something in the book world that was the equivalent of this honor, let's call it the five element book. The five categories are if it's 1. Interesting 2. Exciting
3. Informing 4. Well written and 5. Creative. Mrs. Chahrour's book easily falls under each of the these categories. Me and my family also agreed that it was really fun and extremely simple. I would highly recommend the book to middle schoolers, but also to their parents and family. It changed the way I looked at science by seeing how much fun and simple it can really be.
