Microsoft Exchange Server in a Nutshell

Author: Mitch Tulloch

Used price: $1.76
Collectible price: $21.13

Microsoft Exchange Server in a Nutshell documents version 5.5 of the BackOffice mail server. It's a complete guide to installing, using, maintaining, repairing, and upgrading this popular program.

Administrators who already have some experience with getting work done under Exchange Server will home in on the excellent reference material that makes up most of this guide. For Unix experts, there's also a handy comparison of Sendmail and Exchange Server. The authors succinctly document every command line tool (including every switch and every parameter) and do the same for all the graphical tools. Most importantly, all of Exchange Server's directory objects are documented. He lists each object with its path, permissible contents, properties, and a quick explanatory description. Where appropriate, the author inserts stepped procedures that explain how to carry out particular tasks. He also has added notes that explain pitfalls and detail the interaction of Exchange Server with other messaging programs. --David Wall

Topics covered: The historical progression of Microsoft mail servers, the Exchange Server architecture, the relationships between Exchange Server and its clients, and implementation of Exchange Server in X.400 and X.500 messaging environments.

Just In Time for a Disaster Recovery
As a recent fan of the O'Reilly Nutshell series, this one caught my eye as I prepared for my final MCSE test: Exchange. This book is really not for beginners, but is great for those who have some Exchange administration experience and want to learn more detail about the product, everything from the history and development to the "secret" command line utilities. As luck would have it, a few days after I bought the book I had to do a disaster recovery of my Exchange server. Tulloch's concise recovery procedures helped save the day!

I wish I had this book a long time ago . . .
As a fan of O'Reilly's "Windows NT in a Nutshell," I've been waiting for this book. Like the other Nutshell manuals, it encapsulates lots of hard-to-find information in one place. If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to implementing Exchange Server, however, you might want a different book (I strongly recommend Tony Redmond's text); this book is best suited for administrators who need a quick reference. However, anyone who wants to learn more about how Exchange Server operates will benefit from reading this book.

Mindtraps: Mastering the Inner World of Investing

So Good I Republished It.
This book covers the psychological topic of judgemental heuristics and behavioral finance in a way that most people will have no trouble understanding it. The author covers 88 different mindtraps, ranging from the need to be "in control" to the need to be right. It's a must for any serious investor.

This book is so good that my company republished it in 1996.

This book is the first investment any investor should make!
This book is the very best there is concerning the psychology of investing. It is based on actual research by clinical psychologists in the area of decision making and investing. Even though it has a very meaty and serious undertone it is also very witty. You will find yourself laughing and thinking "Oh god I've done that" at the same time. The book is also well written and easy to read without losing context. If you are ever going to invest during your life you should buy this book!

The Random Walk and Beyond: An Inside Guide to the Stock Market

Great book! Publisher should reprint.
I first found this book at my local library and found it to be one of the best books on investments that I'd read. Since then I've tried to find it for sale here and elsewhere, but have not been able to locate a copy. I hope the publisher will reprint this book someday (even better if they'd update and print a 2nd edition) before I steal the one from the library (I'm joking; but I would like to have a copy of the book).

Best book I've read on investing
The SEC should make this required reading for anyone who wants to invest in the stock market. Johnson clarifies what is important and what is not in investing. Even after he shows you how you CAN beat the market, he makes you think about whether you really NEED to beat the market. Much more meaningful than Lynch's pablum.

Scaling Microsoft Exchange 2000 : Create and Optimize High-Performance Exchange Messaging Systems

All The Info I Need
M Bijaoui takes a balanced approach to both theory and practice in this book. A good half share of the book describes the underlying theory of scaling systems, but without diving too deeply in complex systems theory. On the other hand, it actually describes (presumably from real world experiences) the practicalities of scaling up Exchange.

Its pitch is just about right: not so deep that you'd get the bends, but just deep enough that you can get by with a snorkel.

Right in the sweet spot!
This topic is clearly right in Mr. Bijaoui's sweet spot and he delivers with a home run. If you are looking to build a big, honkin' server, but also want to know all of the gotchas along the way, this book is for you.

Just what I was looking for...

Production values (pictorially/editorially) are fantastic.
Coincidentally, I also am in Somerville, MA. I happened upon this only because it was displayed prominently in a local Cambridge institution in Harvard Square on top of a stack of new architecture and art books that I passed by just browsing. I probably buy more computer-related books (not many at all) than architecture these days, but after looking through this I easily decided to buy it then and there. Two buildings I never previously knew existed, but are richly and lovingly documented (right down to the oddball uniforms the staff had to wear during that period in time). Equal parts historical reference and architectural anthology of the two structures. It currently occupies the top shelf of my living room bookcase.

A Great Book on Skyscrapers
Daniel Abramson is a first-class writer who beautifully handles a large and interesting subject. Hundreds of photos make the book highly accessible. The text perfectly complements the photographs. Outstanding.

Nice book
The table of contents lays out all of the main lines- this book is very well organized- 65 complete games, many of them classics by Fischer and Timman and other modern grandmasters.

Semi Complete works of the Ruy Lopez exchange
I enjoy the author's commentary. He blends humor with raw analysis. This book shows all the important variations for any serious student of the opening. The diagrams are good and the book is almost complete, however the "Odds and Ends" chapter could be expanded -i.e. There are a lot more options than the ones given.

The Speculator's Edge: Strategies for Profit in the Futures Markets

Unquestionably the Best Book on Markets and Trading, Period
Of the many dozens of books I've read on markets, trading and speculation this is clearly the best. Extremely well written, the book is both educational and entertaining. I'm personally convinced that the market approach advocated by the author must be considered by anyone who is involved in the very serious business of speculation. Clearly this book is a classic. I've had it over a decade, read it many times, and find myself in trouble more often than not whan I've forgotten to follow the ideas presented.

Best book on the subject of contrarian investing
This book is not a technical book about the science of trading or speculating. Rather, it presents a compelling and original perspective on the function of speculation in capital markets, and explains what it means to buy low and sell high. Moreover, the book has very little to do with the commodities markets specifically, and a lot to do with general speculating in the financial markets.

The Speculator's Edge is the first book I have read which explains who takes "the other side" of a stock tranaction, and explains why. As a study of the psychology of investors and the market, the book has few peers. Pacelli states the original of this book came from a boast that he could write the best book available on the subject of speculation (and investing) because most books were worthless. He succeeded.

Success in commodities : the congestion phase system
Published in Unknown Binding by Pageant-Poseidon Press (1975)
Author: Eugene Nofri

It works
There are few published methods that work. Most are 50 years old. This method works. You should own this book.

Congestion Phase System has a probability of 75% winners!!!
The vast majority of those who speculate in commodity futures - despite occasional large gains - overall lose large sums of money, even though many of them spend hundreds of dollars on "winning" chart, computer, and advisory services. But thanks to Eugene Nofri, now you can be one of the few who consistently rack up big profits. From the day he joined the Chicago Board of Trade, Mr. Nofri was determined to develop a method of predicting commodity price movements. After years of experimentation, trial and error, he finally succeeded with his CONGESTION PHASE SYSTEM, to our knowledge one of the most profitable trading system ever devised.

This limited edition reveals all the details his of his remarkable method. Based on the pressures and counter pressures of buying and selling which occur every day in the marketplace, the CONGESTION PHASE SYSTEM enables you to forecast with amazing accuracy when a commodity is about to change direction. The result: you have an edge when to get in and out fast for big percentage profits often in just a couple of days.

The key is recurring patterns that appear at least 75% of the time during market congestion-both in uptrends and downtrends. The repetitive occurrence of these phases and the predictable price movements that immediately follow are what give the Congestion Phase its incredible reliability.

This system of trading builds your profits three ways:
1. You see when to day trade for quick profits.
2. It signals when to get out of a position already held.
3. It confirms you should get into the market (or warns you to keep out) when some other system indicates a potentially profitable move is about to begin.

Mr. Nofri explains what Congestion Phases are all about, with easy-to-read text and charts you can master in a single evening. He gives you a new and simplified way to chart closing prices in just minutes a day, shows you how to identify a period of market congestion, and immediately spot which phase "your commodities" are in. Because you trade only in congestion periods, you can not only make sizeable profits, you are protected against large losses brought about by getting caught in a straightaway move against you. The system telegraphs coming changes in direction so you automatically close out positions with your profits intact.

A recent Commodity Exchange Authority survey shows that over a period of nine years, only 25% of the speculators surveyed had a net profit. Mr. Nofri's system not only provides the opportunity for giant-sized gains, it protects you from major loss. That's why Mr. Nofri's exclusive Congestion Phase System may well be the most priceless revelation of the century for the commodity trader. Perry Kaufman, in his landmark, best selling "Trading Systems and Methods", had this to say about Nofri's congestion phase system: "The congestion phase system can stand alone as a short term trading method or can be used to complement any longer technique. An assumption of 75% (probability of success) is reasonable."

Yet it's so easy to use you'll wonder why nobody ever devised such a system before (perhaps nobody before Mr. Nofri ever had the patience to spend half a lifetime developing it).

Technology Exchange in the Information Age: A Guide to Successful Cooperative R & D Partnerships
Published in Paperback by Battelle Pr (December, 1997)
Authors: John Lesko, Phillip Nicolai, Michael Steve, and Phil Nicolai
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $7.41
Average review score:

The most useful source on this subject.
This book is written primarily for people considering cooperative technical efforts between government and industry (from either side of the table). Although based on studies funded by the Air Force, the findings are applicable to industry cooperation with any mission-oriented government lab. The basic concepts apply to cooperation between any organizations with contrasting cultures. The book "starts from the beginning" for the new player, but even the most experienced practitioner will find something useful.

When I was manager of the Army-wide Technology Transfer Program, I found the First Edition so useful that I gave copies to the technology transfer representatives at each of the 50+ Army Labs. This new edition is timely because of rapid changes in the environment in both government labs and industry, as well as changes in the law and in Administration policy which make cooperation easier.

The authors consider the impact of cultural factors on technical cooperation, and show by example how cultural barriers can be overcome. In this case, the most important cultural factor is the contrast between the very reasons the organizations exist- "mission" vs. "profit". Most government labs are created and funded to achieve a specific "mission" (e.g. develop some type of military system). Diversion of effort from the mission is seen as improper and possibly illegal. In contrast, most industrial companies are created to make a profit for their owners. Undue delay, risk to intellectual property, or other threat to profit is unacceptable. Before these organizations can cooperate effectively, there must be a reasonable prospect of advancing the lab's mission while providing a (present or future) profit to the company. Finding mutually interesting projects and negotiating mutually beneficial agreements requires vision and understanding. The authors point out some of the needs and constraints likely to motivate each party, and provide examples of successful agreements.

Fortunately the law permi! ts arrangements which are much more flexible than those controlling government procurement, and the authors explore these options. The most popular tool, the Cooperative R&D Agreement, is analyzed in great detail.

The authors also address the practical problem of finding potential partners and provide a list and description of several matchmaking organizations, mostly government- funded, which facilitate contact between the parties. In the last few years the World Wide Web has become especially useful for finding partners, and the computer disk included with the book speeds access to the most important sites.

This book is really useful because it combines a broad conceptual understanding with a direct approach to practical problems. It combines the "why" with the "how" in a manner which is rare in any book on any subject.

Cooperative effort offers significant opportunities, but has many pitfalls. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to profit from the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls.

A unique, essential resource for technology exploitation.
This book is about technology application for competitive advantage in the international marketplace. It is a progressive, how-to handbook that leads the reader from the foundations of government-industry differences to the capstone of government-industry cooperation in joint efforts of technology deployment, economic strength, and national security.

The book is a second edition of a previous sell-out success. The new edition arises from the information explosion, and new government policies in the Technology Transfer and Advancement Act of 1995.

The authors discuss the nitty-gritties of core competencies, funding and profit, and intellectual property rights. They address risk, technology cycle time, product versus process orientation, and the Federal Acquisition Regulation culture.

The chapter on "Building Bridges" is especially useful, describing three elements of successful technology exchange: networking, team building, and face-to-face coordination. The text defines "bridging organizations" as those that exist to enable technology exchange. It lists many examples in an appendix and in an enclosed disk file that includes clickable web site addresses.

A key contribution is the careful description of the cooperative research and development agreement (CRDA), which is a powerful, yet complex, mechanism for technology transfer. The book includes a model CRDA that may be used by readers to develop their own working agreements in practice.

The authors discuss measurement, including both activity and process metrics, and offer examples for consideration. They close with a discussion of leadership as an encompassing influence, and present a seven-step prescription for technology transfer success.
