A solid but basic introduction
This book offers a good although basic introduction to the dynamics of psychology and the way it effects the financial and economic aspects of our lives. Its primary focus is investments and what drives the markets to perform.

The information is helpful and interesting, but I found Martin Pring's Investment Psychology Explained to be more comprehensive and informative. However, for a serious psychology driven investor, this book would be a welcome addition.

The Investor's Anthology: Original Ideas from the Industry's Greatest Minds is an enlightening collection of poignant observations from more than 50 respected individuals who have weighed in over the years on assorted financial matters. Compiled by Charles D. Ellis and James R. Vertin and grouped into related sections, its broad mixture of perspectives--represented by the inclusion of Hans Christian Andersen and Phinaeus T. Barnum alongside Benjamin Graham and Adam Smith--is highly instructive and quite entertaining.

Las nuevas finanzas en México

Just a simple finance textbook
An international finance textbook with a flashy name (linked to some mexican finance spotlights) in order to take marketing advantage from the lacking of serious issues published in Mexico on this subject. Nevertheless, there is no slightest reason to assume the theory is not useful for BA students. Needless to say, there is nothing new in finance matters. Alan Shapiro's Multinational Financial Management is a better choice.

It is about Lydia's Baby Sitter.
Lydia Jane and the Baby-Sitter Exchange is about Lydia's Babysitter. First Lydia goes to an after school camp that she really likes then she gets a baby-sitter. Her baby-sitter's name is Mrs. Humphrey. Throughout the story Lydia Jane and Lydia's younger sister, Gabrialle, try to get rid of the horrible Mrs. Humphrey. The book takes place in Lydia and Gabrielle's small town. They live in a house next to a small patch of woods. With Mr. and Mrs. Bly as parents. Every day after school Lydia Jane and Gabrielle walk to Mrs. Humphery's house. They sit in a little room and watch T.V. Lydia Jane and Gabrialle want a new baby- sitter. Fast! They argue with there parents and finally Lydia Jane sends a letter to her grandmother. Her grandmother really helps. I thought this was one of the best books I read. It has more excitement. I also like how the book doesn't explain everything so I can try to figure the answers out. It makes you want to read the rest of the book, so I can see what happens next. I loved the book Lydia Jane and the Baby- Sitter Exchange. It is one of my favorite books!

Markets Unbound- Too optimistic
This book makes some interesting points and is well written. I feel that the authors are too optimistic about the affects of globalization on the world economy. Issues like disparity in income and ravaging affects on the middle class are not given the attention they should. I would also have liked to see more opinions on what world governments could do to alleviate the sweeping changes the world markets are making. Still, the book is worth reading for anyone interested in the affects of globalization.

Panics and Crashes: How You Can Make Money from Them

Good history
For those of us with a recently-raised interest in the stock market (and who doesn't fit that category today! ) this book provides a concise history of past panics and crashes in U.S. history. It then describes a few techniques to capitalize on a rapidly falling market. While not a comprehensive & exhaustive work, it's a good introduction into what can happen when the "good times" abruptly end.

Trading on the Seattle Merc

Seattle Utopia Exchange
This book is the author's elaborate BUSINESS PLAN (he says so himself on page 22 & 23) for building a facility to trade forward contracts and options based upon the nursery (trees) industry . The Seattle Mercantile Exchange, in other words, DOES NOT EXIST. The book is simply a 20% business plan, 80% primer on the workings of futures & options, too.

With the changes in the industry, I supposed the CFTC somehow approved The Seattle Merc, but it was not to be. After numerous calls to the Oregon and Washington State nursery associations, the CFTC, NFA, etc., nobody has ever heard of the SME. I finally reached someone who knew Capasso personally, who affirmed the non-existence of the SME.

Now, mind you, the entire book is written in the present tense, as though the exchange is underway currently. In fact, the book's inside flap description and marketing material will lead one to believe that the SME is in operation. This is entirely NOT THE CASE. In fact, the last word about the material development of the exchange is from Capasso. He had made investments into "development cost" for $250,000 to the SME and a grower who committed $4 million of "inventory" to the exchange. But nothing came about from it. Capasso claims "Even though all new ventures have start-up costs, the idea of an exchange for an industry that was conservative in its thinking and that approached change reluctantly was a risky venture, to say the least."

The rest of the book is textbook step-by-step on his business plan operating the exchange, including a contract example, clearing and settlement procedures, and a quote terminal.

So, in the end, what you have for the nursery profession is the Seattle Utopia Exchange. This does not detract from the books value. John Wiley & Sons brings out some consisently high-grade finance books, and this one is perfect for the futures' industry economic value.

The book's main value is spiritual food for professionals and entrepreneurs who desire to offset market risk in their business transactions. Capasso's clear writing, and concreate outline of the Exchange development, is a first step towards demystifying this part of finance. Even though with the dissapointing fact that I was mislead by the marketing of this book, it was worth it to see just how easy it is to create a futures exchange for just about anything :)

Wasta: The Hidden Force in Middle Eastern Society

Wasta: The Hidden Force in Middle Eastern Society
"Understanding wasta is key to understanding decisions in the Middle East, for wasta pervades the culture of all Arab countries and is a force in every significant decision. . . . Wasta is a way of life." What is this mysterious force? Nothing very surprising: wasta is Arabic for connections, pull.

To study wasta, the authors focus on Jordan in the no doubt correct expectation that the phenomenon there broadly represents what's to be found elsewhere in the Muslim Middle East. They find that wasta has changed over time. Patrons who used to help their followers mostly for reasons of prestige now seek money rewards. Also, its main goal has changed from defusing tribal conflict to acquiring economic benefits: "Wasta evolved from conflict resolution as a means of survival to intercession to maintain one's place of honor in contemporary Jordan." Wasta has a positive side (humanizing the bureaucracy) but also serves as an "affirmative action for the advantaged" which has the effect of entrenching the haves and excluding the have-nots; it makes life miserable for concientious officials trying to live by the law but called on by family obligations to help their own.

Though social scientists, Cunningham and Sarayrah avoid jargon and considerately consign the theoretical passages to separate chapters. As a result, Wasta not only provides insights into an overlooked facet of Middle Eastern life, but is a pleasure to read.
