A SMALL HAND "CALCULATOR" ON SOYBEAN PRICES
This book is truly useful for soybean traders and farmers alike. It provides the seasonal tendencies (that is never 100% accurate) but nonetheless quite helpful in making the necessary trading or hedging decisions. It helps you to calculate probability of seasonal highs above or below other highs etc.

Insightful!
This lucid, plain, straightforward book is not necessarily the sort of thing one expects from an economist, yet author Stanley Fischer is one of our era's greatest economists. His work at the International Monetary Fund put him on the front lines during some of the twentieth century's most serious economic crises and panics. He has a unique and valuable perspective. His timely discussion of the IMF and the World Bank provides a sobering antidote to the rhetoric of both globalization and anti-globalization. Fischer reminds us that the IMF's many glaring failures and imperfections are the stumbles and flaws of an organization that has done good work to further a noble purpose. It also has proven willing and able to change when the facts do. For good reason, Fischer's essays sometimes read like the arguments of a defense attorney countering prosecutorial accusations. The IMF has come in for so much criticism in recent years that it is refreshing to discover so many points in its favor, and we find it both fair and prudent to consider them carefully.

Useful Professional Guide
The author's expertise in the subject matter becomes apparent when you read his lucid explanations of a subject matter that can be quite dry. He successfully intertwines historical events and human stories with the technical discussions of each section to keep the reader engaged and interested. Despite the breadth of the book it is clear that the author has spent considerable time researching the individual sections and has presented the material in a methodical and organized fashion. Thus it clearly serves as a useful professional guide and should be on every money manager's shelf. I especially enjoyed reading the beginning chapters which focus on the historical background and the arrangement of the global currency markets. The author has many clear examples to illustrate his points and thus the book will also appeal to the novice who wants to learn the fundamentals of the currency markets.

Easy to read and to understand
The Reuters Financial Series allow almost every person with a simple knowledge of economy and mathematics to understand the stock market. It contains a lot of informaton and practical examples and the graphical look allow us an easy understanding of the topics. The only problem is the exercises and the examples are based on the "Reuters Markets" program, so if you dont't have it the book becomes a little useless.

Key Exchange
Published in Paperback by Avon (January, 1983)
Author: Kevin Wade

Average review score:

The daunting threat of exchanging keys in the modern world
"Key Exchange" was something of an off-Broadway success in the early 1980s. Kevin Wades play is about the New York swinging singles scene in general and the problems of Philip, his girlfriend Lisa, and the newly married Michael. The trio gets together each weekend to go bicycling in Central Park and deal with the eternal issue of commitment versus freedom. Philip wants to keep laying the field, so he is trying to avoid any serious commitment to Lisa, who, of course, secretly years for an exclusive relationship. They bike together, date a few times each week, sleep together, and they might even love each other. But they are the modern cosmopolitan couple, which means they can date other people whenever they want and have "freedom." Since Michael has just gotten married he is the stout defender of monogamy, although his advice tends towards metaphors like "why go out for a hamburger when you can have a steak at home?" Besides, his authority on the matter is seriously undercut when we learn his wife has run off with another man; apparently she was not happy to be married to a man who goes off to the park to race his bicycle against a young unmarried woman each weekend.

The title comes from Lisa's suggestion that she and Philip exchange keys to each other's apartments. Her proposal is that they "give it a go as a couple for a while, see what happens." But all Philip can think of is that he would bring some other woman back to his place and at the pivotal moment Lisa would walk in (it take him a while to think that he might be able to do the same thing to her). Not surprisingly, it turns out that this cosmopolitan couple is not as modern as they both believe. The idea of a key exchange ends up being simply an example of a lower threshold than actually living together, in terms of a major hurdle in the life of the modern couple. In the end the characters essentially end up back where they were in the first place, although we hope they are certainly wiser. Overall in Wade's play the wit outweighs the wisdom, but then the commitment issue is not exactly new, on or off Broadway. This is a three character play with an exterior set, and in 1985 was made into a less than adequate film with Ben Masters, Brooke Adams, and Daniel Stern by soap opera director Barnet Kellman.

Do you understand the "diffusion process" and how it relates to your company's newest marketing effort? When you're asked about "price/earnings ratios," do you quickly change the subject? Is the term "internal rate of return" enough to make your eyes glaze over? The Knowledge Exchange Business Encyclopedia Illustrated can help: it defines these and 1,222 other business terms, and explains how all fit into today's world of commerce and industry. It also includes a Chronology of Business time line, profiles of corporate leaders from Andrew Carnegie to Adolph Zukor, and a series of data tables with interesting comparative figures.

Excellent Business Reference
A bit expensive, but the best first-source business reference book I know. Especially good for younger readers because of it's helpful and pleasant graphics, it nonetheless serves adult readers well who just need a quick reminder of the difference between GNP and GDP, what a junk bond is,or how to calculate market value. A tad out of date -- but what reference book isn't?

Living & Working in Greece: Your Guide to a Successful Short or Long-Term Stay
Published in Paperback by How to Books Ltd (August, 2001)
Author: Peter Reynolds
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Good info & great for Brits, but few others
My experience as an American ex-pat moving/living/working in Greece motivated me to buy this book in hopes of learning something new or at least confirming what is real and true. That was not the case for me.

While Mr. Reynolds obviously knows Greece and her small details from experience and knowledge of the language, some information is already outdated (even though it was released only months ago) and aimed primarily and specifically toward people from the UK. So, if you are from the UK, this book is for you.

If you're not, this book still offers a wealth of information that is useful and necessary, but when tackling employment and visa/work permit issues, it will offer you nothing. And unfortunately, since this half of the title refers to working, it doesn't fulfill its promise if you are from somewhere other than the UK.

This book is also written from a man's point of view and experiences, and life and work for a woman in Greece is slightly different. (...) Overall, this is still a worthwhile and handy book.

limited consumers face the powerful market
This book tries to answer the question, "How can advertisers most effectively market to low-income consumers?" At first, it seems exploitative that someone would even ask that of such an oppressed group. However, the researchers are sensitive to the poor and make their study make sense, even in a politically correct manner. This was an anti-classist text. It was a wonderful mix of sociology and business research.

The researchers ask, "Who are the poor?" "How do they spend differently than the middle-class?" They undress myths that the poor spend foolishly or spend more on "sin" products. The book only asks at the end how advertisers may best reach them.

The book isn't perfect. It tries to put a human face on various phenomena with these cheesy real-person quotes. It fudges the question of whether the poor tend to live in urban or rural areas. It discusses many studies that the researchers themselves conducted, often in a haphazard manner. Still, I enjoyed this book. Those who love capitalism but hate poverty in the US will also get much out of it.
