A comprehensive reference for students, but not travellersThe format of the book is direct and concise. For each country, there's about a page on the culture, and where to read more about it. Then there's statistical information, such as population and basic weather patterns. Then finally the bulk of each country's entry is divided into, unsurprisingly, work, study, and travel sections.
I'd be especially wary of the utility of the information given in the 'work' and 'travel' sections, as this information tends to be the most volatile over time. Still, there are literally thousands of addresses given by this book, and if even half of them are still valid, the book will probably have been worth the purchase price for you.
Certainly, there's no other book on the market which has as exhaustive a selection of countries from which to choose. There are, however, better sources for individual countries--embassies an even Lonely Planet guides being just the most obvious of them. Where the book excels is in its superb, even comprehensive, reference for study abroad programs. Though now probably somewhat outdated, I remember thinking in 1994 that the book had seemingly every address of every major study abroad program that earned credit with an American university. These programs are organized not just by country but by subject area, so that if you want to, say, find art history programs in Belgium, it's dead simple.
This is therefore a particularly useful purchase for the student who already knows which country or subject matter she wants to experience. It's also highly valuable for college Freshmen who know they want to have a significant experience abroad, but they don't know quite what they want to do. Where it's less useful, I think, is for the serious traveller who's looking for current information about work conditions in various countries. And it's certainly almost entirely useless for anyone hoping to use its contents for casual travelling.
As of March 2000, a far more appropriate title for the book would be, simply, "How to Study Abroad".

October 19, 1987 what does it mean today? What I found most fascinating was the discussion of the impact of mutual funds, program trading, index arbitrage and other hedging activities on the markets. If you want to know what it means when you hear "The curbs are in" on Wall Street, as well as why the curbs were put in place to begin with, this book explains it.
The author, Charles P. Kindleberger, saw the potential problems coming in Japan. He talks about this in some detail, as well as problems he saw in the U.S. economy at the time. Since this book came out almost 15 years ago, much of it is naturally dated. Kindleberger saw problems with the entire World economy and he was concerned about a World Depression. Ironically, he just may have been way ahead of his time on that call.

Excellent work -- informative and scholarlyDealing with the crisis chronologically, and country-by-country, Tan is able to illustrate patterns that span the whole event, and unique events within each country. He treats the responses of each country, and does not shirk from providing a sober and often scathing assessment of the attitudes and policy responses of individual countries. His political analyses are just as useful, since the implications of the event have so much to do with the political makeup of individual countries, and their political and financial institutions.
Market data is used extensively to support his claim. There is a tremendous and often overwhelming plethora of data. However, if one is just looking for an identification of major patterns and analyses, Tan illustrates this very clearly within his chapters.
This book is a great resource for someone who wants access to source data that is relevant to the Asian Meltdown, as well as just a broad introduction to the phenomena that helps a reader trying to understand such a significant event (or series of events).

Ellen Ostrow, the consequences of their bottom line approach to doing business.
The billable hours culture, which places greatest value on overwork and heroic individualism, hurts families, diminishes the care of children and elders, reduces the possibilities for the success of women attorneys, limits the dignity of lawyers, makes lawyers abandon their civic responsibilities - and ultimately erodes the fabric of our society.
Rayman provides a sophisticated social, economic and moral analysis of the problem and offers both conceptual solutions and specific examples of their success. Rayman offers wise
counsel to the counselors.

Great book to teach abroad
The book does contain a reasonable overview of the technologies used when programming for Exchange 2000 (and subsequently 2003), including CDOEX / EXM / WF, WebDAV, ActiveDirectory, and such; however, most of the chapters tend to be about a third as long as I'd expect and give only cursory examples and often only the names of methods and properties used without any real descriptions.
Overall, although the book did give me a good introduction to technologies that have changed significantly over the past few years--CDO 1.2 and CDONTS users will find CDOEX and WebDAV, etc. rather confusing at first rather than familiar--I found that I had to resort back to MSDN and other online sources for most of the real information I needed. With that said, I don't feel the book's cost is justified; I'd prefer a true reference rather than a simple overview.
