Was there a link between Lee Harvey Oswald's years in Russia and the J.F.K. assassination? In this stylish, darkly twisted debut thriller by a former music writer for Time magazine, New York police detective Francis X. Byrne uncovers just such a connection as he probes the grisly murder of a kinky Danish diplomat. Byrne also finds that his own FBI agent brother and their Polish American mother are important pieces of the puzzle.

COMPLEX READ
This book is not for reading piecemeal. I found it most confusing because of the series of plot lines that we followed, slipping back and forth between. Nothing unusual there. I'm not certain but we were mostly moving through time lines that eventually brought us to the "present". The author was perhaps too clever with this device. Did he write the multiple stories and then just cut and paste them together? I have never read chapters that changed timelines every paragraph as they did at the end. There was a lot of bigoted characters -- at first I thought the author himself might be reflecting his own thoughts -- but the the characters were just mostly unsympathetic. No one was clearly heroic. First novels are a mixed blessing. I am happier with my current Cornwell.

Intelligently written, good read, but somewhat flawed
I read this through to the end - it starts out as an interesting cross between police procedural and international espionage novel, then ends up in almost a "Manchurian Candidate"-like family melodrama. Although the author is very knowledgeable, and weaves in all sorts of interesting allusions, and is a much more creative writer than you find in your general airport bookstore, the whole novel is somewhat of a tease, files never revealed, the title location (Exchange Alley, New Orleans)never visited, certain potentially intersting sexual liaisons between main characters that are raised as potentials but never consummated. Kind of an odd book overall. But I give it four stars, and, like I said, I read it through.

Homicide, espionage, kinky sex!
Walsh's first effort is an engrossing piece that weaves Oswald, the CIA, KGB, the Mole Theory, the Holocaust, and the more exotic sexual mileu of modern New York into a neat plot as hot-headed Detective Francis Byrne tries to unravel the killing of a Danish diplomat. Part thriller, part police procedural, and all great writing. The history and tradecraft are accurate, the plot never lags, and the reader is defied to guess the ending before arrival, probably in the wee hours of the morning. This one is VERY tough to put down.

A textbook for beginners
This book is an essential a textbook for college students. It provides all the basic materials about the futures market. But I feel it doesn't cover too much about the problems of real world trading. After trading for sometimes, I know that there are many tricks using by the professional traders. They are really important. They can give you edges over other traders. But they are seldom covered in college textbooks. So you still need to read other books or learn from other people before you put the money into this risky game.

Belongs On Every Serious Market Participant's Bookshelf
This is clearly one of the best investment books written. The title belies the breadth of valuable market knowledge the book offers students of the markets.

No kidding
If you are going to trades futures, read this book, make a few trades, then read this book again. It is a cold, hard look at the reality of trading. While just about every other book on futures trading assumes you are a gullible idiot, this one exposes the difficulty of the pursuit. Its depth and breadth are incomparable.

Healthy Exchanges Cookbook: It's Not a Diet, It's a Way of Life

You know the drill: to lose those extra pounds that have been adding up, you resolve to follow a plan of rigorous exercise and strict dieting. You stick with it for a week or two, then--just when you're breaking out the celery sticks and rice cakes for lunch--somebody shoves a chocolate brownie under your nose, and it's all over! Author Joanna Lund is all too familiar with the dieter's roller coaster; by her own estimation, she has shed at least 1,000 pounds--and regained at least 1,150--over the years. Finally, she realized the secret was to aim for a healthier lifestyle rather than a miraculous instant weight loss. Pretty soon, she was cooking up new recipes that were low in fats, sugars, and sodium; easy to make; and delicious to eat. These recipes are at the heart of Healthy Exchanges.

Lund's goals are twofold: to exchange old, bad habits for new, healthy ones, and to exchange ingredients that are high in fat and sugar for those that--although lower in such contents--still retain the original flavor, appearance, and aroma. Plus, she says, "If it takes longer to fix it than it takes to eat it, forget it!" Lund takes the deprivation out of low-fat diets: pizza, banana cream pie, and tacos are all on the menu, in addition to green salads, soups and pastas. Healthy Exchanges Cookbook doesn't promise to melt those pounds off overnight, but it does guarantee a healthier approach to eating that will benefit every member of the family.

Average review score:

Simple, fairly tasty, low-fat dishes
I'm using this cookbook to help me learn how to "low-fat-ize" my cooking. I like that Lund uses everyday ingredients and tells you up front what you need to keep on hand to cook from her book on short notice. The recipes are pretty easy to make and, while they'll never be four-star fare, are adequate for Tuesday night meals for the family.

I do have one quibble: Most of the recipes that use ground beef call for only 8 ounces. This usually requires that I saw a pound block of hamburger in half, which I find really annoying. It's enough to make me make double batches and freeze the rest.

Simple to Prepare and Oh How Tasty The Results!
I bought this book a few years ago after seeing Joanna demonstrate some of the recipes on a shopping network. I was impressed with the simplicity of the recipes and the author's promise that every ingredient could be found in her small town supermarket. To say that I haven't been disappointed is an understatement. This is the book I reach for when I need something quick to prepare but tasty nevertheless. I have grown my collection of Joanna Lund books to eight, and my experience with this first volume is the primary reason for the expansion.

Give this book a try. Your family will be pleased and so will you.

The "classic" Joanna Lund cookbook.
I have lost 82 pounds with Joanna Lund's recipes. I have five of her cookbooks and this is my favorite. There are some excellent, real food recipes in this book that my whole family loves. She makes it easy too; the ingredients are easy to find in your store and the meals are made in minutes. Try it, you won't be disappointed!!

The Psychology of Finance

Psychology textbook
The first part of this is an explaination of the various schools of psycology. Then he explains what ideas he draws from them. Though very interesting, you're shown possible explainations of market action, but not really shown how to understand which of those is working in the market at the moment. After all, isn't the study of psycology of trading supposed to give you an edge and help you figure out what people are doing or what they are "probably" about to do?

Later he goes into chart patterns and relates the material to chart formations. But nothing that is an improvement on similar discussions of the psycology of chart patterns we've all heard and read before.

As for one reviewer mentioning what is important in the markets, no where is M2 mentioned in the book.

Get to understand charts!
This book simply tells you why technical analysis is very much useful and accurate despite the efficient market hypothesis. Financial market afterall is a human-driven market and Lars Tvede has demonstrated concisely how charts reflect human behavior. A must-read for one who is interested in charts and investing long-term.

Excellent! Can be a classic
If somebody reads one book, makes minor revision and prints it, that's plagiarism. If he/she reads ten, that's a scholarship. If the number goes to a hundred, it can be a classic, my appreciation of this book.

In the bookshelf there are numerous books telling either history of the investment market, or trading psychology, or technical analysis. This book is a rare breed that incorporates several dimensions into one. Chart reading, with elaboration of four basic market rules (1. market is ahead 2. market is irrational 3. environment is chaotic 4. charts are self fulfilling) interrelated with different schools of psychologyical theories (behaviourist, Gestalt, Cognitive, Psychoanalysis), forms the stem of this beautiful book with vivid "green leaves" of writings on momentum, sizing, turning points.....

One great thing of the book is that one does not need to know much about psychology to understand what the author tries to tell, because tables of examples are abundant to let you know when you had made specific mistakes. He does not teach you how to correct them, but it does lead the way of self improvement and really help to enlighten your trading style.

This book should be in any serious trader's bookshelf for fast recollection of some important trading principles, a regular dosage for cleansing mental dirt accumulated after his/her harsh trading life.

Repetitive and tries to over-complicate the subject
I found the content repetitive and the points laboured. The information provided could have been easily presented in 10 pages. Instead the author attemps to over-complicate the topic and confuse the reader. I'm not sure who he is trying to impress, but he didn't impress this reader. E-mail connectivity is an important technology. Getting it right can be the difference between a low maintenance, efficient, fast infrastructure and a painfully slow, troublesome and unreliable one. Unfortunatly this book only succeeds in clouding the issues involved.

Not bad...
I bought this book expecting it to cover a much wider area of connectivity.

It focuses on X.400 and particulary SMTP connectivity, not what I really wanted. But it does cover those areas really well.

As well, as just looking at Exchange, the author covers more related technology areas. Good information from the real world.

Great book. Lots of information. Easy to read!
I bought this book based on my experience that the Digital Press series offers the best books on email in the industry. Kieran McCorry meets that challenge! His writing easily matches that of Redmond, Rhoton, Collin, Avolio and Vixie.

Excellent read for the high-level ops trader
Not for the speculative trader. Baird explains neutrality and hedging scenarios in great detail. Explains some esoteric concepts rarely discussed, such as time spread risk and delta drift. Very succinct explanation on arb spreads and combos, and the tendency to trade to the pin at expiration. Highly recommended.

Best introduction to options
I highly recommend this book for a basic, clean, non-pretentious presentation of option trading from a market maker's point of view. Baird can also write English: very clear, linear, simple prose. The man has no axes to grind or ego trips to take, and he knows what he's talking about, and gives very practical advice.

Excellent work
Although this book is not for beginners, it doesn't contain any formulas. Instead it focuses on all the complex aspects of making a market for options. I've read this book over and over again on a regular interval to remind me on the way market makers do their practice, and how to avoid the pitfalls in trading against specialists.

A journey beyond the daily headlines, and stock of the day.
This book carries you beyond daily headlines and the siren song of the stock of the day. Ms. Yamada seeks to identify the underlying enduring trends, rather than tout a cookbook style prescription to current fads. This is a history lesson, making extensive use of comparisons with prior bull markets. As a result, the reader should expect to be an active participant by reviewing the the detailed charts and data. A page turner it is not. The core thesis and eventual conclusions are well worth the effort. After all it is your money.

PRINCIPLES TO INVEST BY
Reading this book teaches the reader that demographics play a vital role in this "new" economy. The future is completely predictable if we focus on logic vs emotion. A must reading for all long term investors.

A fascinating guide to the next ten years of investing
I was turned on to this book by theStreet.com's review which gave it five stars saying "Salomon Smith Barney technical analyst Louise Yamada has written a monumental book, one that all serious and professional investors should read." After a couple of times through Market Magic I couldn't agree more. The first part of the book reads like an analyst's detective story as Yamada exlains how she came to publish her 1994 prediction of 7680 for the Dow even though the average was then stalled at 3600. Yamada then takes on the future and describes the global macrotrends that are already shaping the world economy, and will continue to do so despite interim setbacks. This is not a beach book. It challenges readers to think anew and question outdated concepts. I can't imagine a more rewarding guide to the future.

Out dated or the other reviews are a fix!!!
I bought the book after reading the reviews - I took the exam and failed. In total about 2% of the exam topics were covered and not indepth as needed. I felt like I was in the wrong exam.

Excellent For Review
At over 400 pages, this is a huge certification prep book for this type. Its a shame it doesn't come with a companion CD-ROM because something this big should. However, the information is quite useful even if you don't intend to take the exam. The text is easy to read and understand important topics. There is a good balance of text and diagrams and screen captures. It also contains a handy cram sheet.

Perfect finishing touch before the exam.
As usual, I used the Sybex study guide as my main study tool, combined with a lot of hands-on. I used the Exam Cram the last week before I took the exam to refresh my memory and work on my weak points. The authors had some very good explanations on concepts that other sources (including the Microsoft Training Kit and a NETg CBT I had access to) left unclear. The concepts covered in the Exam Cram map very closely to the items I had on the actual test. Both the Sybex and Microsoft guides had a lot of extra material that didn't show up in the test. I'm glad I studied that extra material, but I'm also glad that the Exam Cram let me skip that extra material in the final week of study when my emphasis was on passing the test. Overall, the best Exam Cram I've used to date.

Pithecanthropus
The book contains a wealth of practical information however there are errors in the mathematical formulas, dates and etc. This is most frustrating from a reader point of view and dampened the confidence in the material presented. However, it is relatively a easy read for general understanding of the money and FX markets. I hope the author does a more thorough check in the future edition in order to do this book justice.

Excellent practical book for the beginners
This is a great practical book for the beginners and intermediate people in the market. When I started in the market as a business analyst, with no prior experience, it was a confused world of trading. After reading this book, things make much more sense. In addition, the book explains brief analytics on how to price and when and why certain instruments will be used for trading. It is geared towards trading. Refer to other books if you are more interested in middle/back office functionality (like settlements, P&L calc, risk management etc.)

Great help for trainers
Many a times, trainers in the banking industry find it very difficult to teach complex subjects like foreign exchange and money markets to relatively junior guys. This book will prove to be of great help to those trainers. Probably the first ever attempt in this subject.( Luca's text book can easily be replaced by this book just because of its excellant padagogy). Hope other titles advertised by RFT will also become available soon, specially the one on Risk Management.

All you ever wanted to know about the ADC and SMTP
I don't know which of the two authors knows SMTP and which knows ADC, but it's obvious that the two topics form the cornerstone of this book. The authors are happy to discuss their pet topics but give relatively little attention to anything else. Because of this, the book reads like an in-depth discussion of attribute mapping between the Exchange DS and the Active Directory followed by a review of how messages find their way through the routing engine. If you're happy with that, buy the book, but if you expect to learn more about how Exchange interoperates with Windows and IIS (both pretty fundamental points for infrastructure) and how to protect Exchange 2000 in a secure manner, go elsewhere.

Misleading Book Title
This book is a disappointment. It was purchased in the belief that it will inform you about infrastructre design. Warning: it does not. In fact, the book is all about the workings of the ADC (and to a certain extent, the SRS) and routing in Exchange 2000. For example, pages 23-93 and 127-150 are about the ADC. Pages 193-337 are about how the SMTP service works and routing in Exchange 2000. So that's over 70% of the book on the ADC and SMTP alone!

If it were entitled "Migrating to Exchange 2000" would it get a better score? Sadly, no. As the above statistics demonstrate, there's huge amounts on the ADC. However, sections such as client issues, storage groups / databases and inter-migration routing issues (to name three randomly) are absent. The latter is surprising given the coverage of SMTP in the book.

So what is this book about and who should read it? It feels as if the author has picked two unrelated facets of Exchange in which he is very familiar and written vast amounts about it! Therefore, if you want or need to know about the ADC, particularly if you need to customise it, the SRS and how SMTP works in Exchange 2000, then this is definitely the book for you. If, however, you want a book on Exchange 2000 infrastructure design or even migrating to Exchange 2000, then this is not the book for you.

THE Exchange 2000 Book for Email/Directory Pros
I've been working in messaging and directory services for a decade, and this is the first book I've found that dives behind the Exchange GUIs to tell me what is actually going on. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially for those who are already comfortable with X.500, LDAP, and SMTP services.
