A Top Notch Study of the Securities Markets...
After spending years searching for a study that would comprehensively explain and forecast the many issues percolating in the securities markets of the 60's and 70's, I have finally found my quarry. Here is not only such a study, but a 'special' study. Very informative and a brisk read. Highly recommended.

Market Profile Reviewed
I was first drawn to the works of Peter Steidlmeyer in 1993 as a futures trader by a colleague who explained that the features that I noted about the frenzied interest rate futures markets, had been encapsulated by this author. Without reading the book I tried to monitor the market activities in the profile that had been explained to me. Strangely enough, there was a pattern apparent on the daily sheets of paper that I started to collect.

It was not until late 1999 that I revisited the phenonmenon when I started to trade on my own account from an office. I recalled the works and decided to pick up the book. It was an incredible revelation and revitalised my enthusiasm for day trading. Many people feel that they have a gut instinct in understanding where markets will trade, but Steidlmeyer's statistical approach formalises much of this. I was particularly interested in how his upbringing and his experiences as a child and the responsibilities he was given formed his approach to trading as a pro. From the writing you will learn the importance of watching rather than partaking in the opening hour of the market, which is often a money saver. it will teach you rules of discipline, because it makes sense.

What I failed to take away from the book in working practice was the application of options volume from the 'far-traders,' the people who were bothered about the long-term haul, and how this could be witnessed in practice. There is certainly a lot of truth in it, but I could not match this with my experience as a day trader. The statistical comprehension of Market Profile is skillfully explained and is profitable to those who adopt it. the book is well written, understandable to the novice and is sound advice.

More than fantasies
Although this book looks like one of those self-gratifying fantasies at first sight, it actually offers much much more than those watered-down stock market tales like "Wall Street" and "The Boiler Room". The reader is taken through the career of a City professional from his humble beginning to the near height of his life. The tales told about the inner workings of brokerage firms are gripping and sharp. The turn of events seems somewhat convenient, one cannot help but has the idea that the main point about writing this book is not about satisfying fantasies, but to reveal the true nature of the stock market and how it affects those who are dumb enough to play it blindly. This book reveals rare information that one will not find in any other self-help investment book. Read it wisely and carefully, but only after you have some fundamental understanding of the stock market. The insights you gain in reading this book will take you through a rollercoaster of ideas. In the end, you will find yourself coming to a conclusion that is much the same as you have suspected: Stock market is all about playing the game.

Symbolic Exchange and Death
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (07 December, 1993)
Author: Jean Baudrillard
Amazon base price: $39.95
Buy one from zShops for: $39.94
Average review score:

Recommended introduction to an important cultural theorist
Jean Baudrillard has an insatiable desire to stay ahead of the game, to push things further and further. Symbolic Exchange and Death, written in 1976 but surprisingly not translated in English until 1993, is a key text because it sets out in challenging but relatively clear terms Baudrillard's radical approach before his more recent period based upon 'fatal strategies' which travels into the ethereal and obscure. Symbolic Exchange and Death fundamentally operates as a genealogy of our dominant system of political economy and the underlying spectre of a pre-existing Symbolic Order. This involves a catastrophic challenge to Marxian and Freudian thought and traditional social approaches. It develops the earlier works of Michel Foucault and phenomenologists such as R.D. Laing to a more radical stance which begins to turn many widely accepted beliefs on their head. It also demonstrates that Baudrillard is not at all the high priest of postmodernism as was thought in the latter part of the 1980s but is a relentless poststructuralist. Despite Baudrillard's own later consignment of the work to a bygone era of dialecticism, Symbolic Exchange and Death, twenty five years on still retains an explosive potency. Fascinating, controversial and unputdownable - will inevitably draw readers to explore the author's other works.

So many great techniques it's hard to know where to start!
As a relative beginner to technical analysis, I am always looking for comprehensive materials. This compilation -- like the 15 that precede it -- is filled with a variety of technical trading techniques and great interviews. Some are still advanced for me, but some make perfect sense, and I can really put them to use.

TechnoFundamental Trading takes you back to basics.
I read this book because the title seemed interesting and I was already familiar with technical trading techniques. I've always been curious about how fundamentals might be interpreted to apply to technical timing. This book was a real eye opener. I got a top to bottom commodity education in less than 300 pages. Not to sound corny, but traders will have a hard time putting this one down. So many situations we all encounter are clearly explained so they make sense. I always wondered about the cattle and hog cycle, or how old crop/new crop grain spreads work. This book told me a lot about market sectors. It's full of charts and illustrations. I recommend this book to the novice and the professional. I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to reading other titles by Philip Gotthelf.

Theory of Markets: Trade and Space-Time Patterns of Price Fluctuations: A Study in Analytical Economics (Advances in Spatial and Network Economics)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (February, 1995)
Author: Bertrand M. Roehner
Amazon base price: $134.00
Average review score:

A "simple" economic problem
It is often said that economics
so far has had less successes
than other sciences, such as for instance physics,
because it has to deal with problems of
greater complexity. However, it seems that economists have
made little effort to rank economic problems according
to their level of complexity.
In this book, from the
very outset, the author selects a question which may
be seen as one of the "simplest" problems in economics.
Why?
Instead of considering the question of
price determination on one market
which depends upon all the numerous factors which
affect demand and supply, the author concentrates his
attention on the RELATIVE price differences between
several (spatially separated) wheat markets.
In such a way, all the factors
affecting demand/supply are so to say brushed aside.
The book first develops a very simple model which
describes the process of spatial arbitrage, that is to say
the decision to buy on a more distant market whenever the
price on that market added to the transport cost is smaller
than the price on nearer markets.
The model is first used to compare prices on only two
markets. Even in this simple form it permits
several predictions which are matched by observation.
In subsequent chapters the model is extended to
the case of N spatially separated markets and this
discloses the existence of a pattern of
prices WAVES hidden behind more of less erratic
price fluctutations due to random exogenous shocks.
Such price waves are indeed observed provided the
data are sufficiently "fine grained" in space as
well as time.
This is an elegant solution to the fundamental
problem of understanding the interactions between
N markets trading in the same commodity.
An incredibly insightful read. Highly recommended.
