The celibate priest will make most fathers feel guilty.
This is an absolutely heart warming book. It is easy to read, and better yet, to understand. The way that the priest takes you through each occurence with jorge makes you feel a part of it. He shows his genuine love and affection for the boy,and puts this particular father of 4 to shame with his willingness to go to any lengths for the young man. The reciprocal love expressed by jorge, might be typical of a teenager, but not always in the form that the parent understands or appreciates fully. It is hard to put the book down and you will totally enjoy the year the priest and the exchange student spent together.

Advances in kinship network studies
This book gathers 15 contributions written by the most distinguished international scholars in the field of kinship. It provides an extensive view on methodological and theoretical advances in kinship studies, as well as several in-depth case studies that illustrate how those methods and concepts might be applied.

One main strength of the book is to present a perspective that is at the same time formal (with an emphasis on mathematical concepts and measures), and historical. In other words, unlike many quantitative kinship studies, those papers are respective of the richness of ethnographic information, and do not dismiss the peculiarities of contexts or time periods. Quite to the contrary, actions and decisions regarding kinship are seen as "embedded in specific nexus of social relations" (p. 1). Houseman and White, for instance, in their reanalysis of Leach's classical study on Pul Eliya, are able to show how matrimonial alliances are explained by a theory of practice grounded in the circumstances of the material environment and the social network (p. 83), which are historical in nature. Considering social constraints as emerging interactional realities enables the authors to defy structural determinism, while keeping the project of scientific explanation.

Conceptual and methodological advances are numerous. Duran Bell's article, for instance, suggests to reinterpret bridewealth, dowry and marriage exchange, in relation with corporate groups, and provides an interesting alternative to an analytical perspective in which reciprocity is the elementary unit of social action. One methodological advance that will undoubtedly excite people interested in kinship is the PGRAPH kinship graph, developed by Douglas White, one of the editors, along with Paul Jorion. Unlike conventional genealogical graphs, PGRAPH considers couples as nodes, and individuals as edges, thus providing a very straightforward representation of the kinship space, that enables one to discover relational structures, in cases where conventional genealogical graphs are of very limited help. The software producing PGRAPHS can be downloaded from Douglas White's home page.

In addition to the presentation of methodological and conceptual advances, readers will enjoy reading fascinating case studies, ranging from Papua New Guinea, India, to Mediterranean communities. Thus, this book satisfied my appetite for rigorous and up to date formal analysis, while providing this touch of exoticism that makes good Anthropology books.

In short, if you have time for only one book on trading, this will be the one.

Orginal Economic Literature - MUST READ
Imagine three authors looking at the very basis for a market system of exchange, and finding agreement in sociological, anthropological, and economic literature in defining a universe of exchange structures.

When I mentioned this title to a friend, the first question was what the authors' point of view in terms of political stance (i.e., liberal or conservative, right or left). The question represents the quagmire endemic in economic literature in general; authors and readers obsessing over the political economy with little more contribution than a rehashing of Adam Smith.

Making Markets is not this sort of popularized literature, but an original intellectual discourse on the foundations of the market systems we take for granted. It dispells many of the popular myths of market systems by identifying the true underlying principles at work.

The authors had originally expressed their "perspective" in a technical report "Markets, Distribution, and Exchange after Societal Cataclysm;" a study on recovery scenarios of the United States economy after a nuclear conflict. The authors must have written Making Markets in recognition of the far more reaching contribution of their study than the immediate thesis at hand.

Making Markets does not discuss nuclear conflict. It focuses on the systems of exchange as exemplified by scenarios that are typical in different parts of the world: 1) the Western "business as usual" model, 2) the third world "wasteland," 3) developing nations "fat of the land", and 4) the "bureaucratic nightmare" of the former socialist states.

The text is detailed, and authoratative, with references to both classical and contemporary economic literature. A model of market systems is presented prior to the functionings of the four scenarios that exemplify the elements of this framework. Its lessons are timeless and fundamental. In a word, this is a "classical" work in our time.

As an appraiser that had a career discerning value from economic anamolies, this is the sort of insight required for comprehending market problems and supporting the analytical approach. Imagine an indication of value for public property with uncertain title in terms exceptional of precuniary units (i.e., money). This is the sort of real problems that existed with property after the disestablishment of the Soviet Union. Understanding the fundamentals of Making Markets reveals the analytical solution to these sort of economic problems inherent to massive change.
