Postmodern Fantasies
In this exciting work of philosophy, Baudrillard does what postmodernists do best: he plays with concepts, like a child plays with toys. Those looking for truth should look elsewhere; here, Baudrillard's task is that of completing various strategic word games, connecting different ideas (such as cloning and cancer) in order to enlighten his readers to a philosophical worldview that has more to do with fantasy, fiction and poetry than anything about ultimate truth.

The best perspective on the innerworld of Impresionists.
This is a remarkable book. The side by side comparisions of the paintings help you appreciate each artists differences and the impressionist movement as a whole. It is a perfect gift. And is unique as a coffee table book you would actually read. You must buy this book!

Life Changes
John Paul Carinci is the head of a successful insurance agency He is also the author of a couple of rather good mystery adventure novels. His latest effort involves a priest and the New York drug scene. The title of this novel is In Exchange Of Life. It was published by 1st Books Library.

Father Joe is the priest for a parish on a small island off the coast of South Carolina. He has a rather laid back existence. That is until his niece dies of a drug overdose in New York. Then the wheels come off on Father Joe's life and he decides to do something about his niece's death.

Melissa Gramel was just an average teenaged girl in New York. Somehow she ended up with the wrong friends and they helped get her started taking drugs. Her father Jerry is Father Joe's brother. After Melissa's death her father and mother try to cope as much as possible. But Joe, having become disillusioned with both the church and society itself, wants to do something about what happened to Melissa.

Joe recruits his friend James who was in seminary with him to help out on his quest. Together the two men question Melissa's friends and classmates to determine who her dealer was. This search leads them to a nasty piece of work named Carlos. He is a punk who helped get Melissa hooked on drugs.

The more that Joe gets into things, the more mired his resolve becomes. Can he really get through the various layers of the drug trade to seek out the person ultimately responsible for Melissa's death?

Father Joe goes undercover and becomes involved with some very unsavory characters either directly involved or on the fringes of the drug trade.

The novel has been labeled as an action thriller but it has a lot of human drama in it as well. Father Joe is waging a war within himself about his faith and what his part is in the whole greater scheme of things.

Carinci puts a lot into this novel. There is the action and adventure of sniffing out the drug trade and doing the undercover bit to flush out the bad guys. The angst that Father Joe feels over the loss of Melissa and of the youth of our society is really moving. Can he find his way back into the fold without losing his life?

Inalienable Possessions: The Paradox of Keeping-While-Giving
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (June, 1992)
Author: Annette B. Weiner
Amazon base price: $29.75
Used price: $20.95

New Exciting Analysis!
Annette Weiner does an amazing job with this book. For anyone interested in social relationships and economics, this book is for you. She reinterprets age-old anthropological data (upon which most current anthropology is based) with an entirely new focus. Rather than reciprocity being the foundation of society, the paradox of "keeping-while-giving" is what defines our social and economic lives, our histories, and our ancestries. She's bold and amazingly intelligent -- good work Annette!

I buy the book for others!
The Internet is a great, illustrated guide to using the Internet. It covers every major piece of software from web browsers, to email programs, news, ftp and more. Most important, it doesn't explain each function of the software, as a manual does, and it avoids the long-winded explainations and anecdotes a Dummies book includes. To the point and very effective. I can't find it at my Borders store, so I order one here for each of my clients. (We are an Internet marketing agency...most clients are new to the web.

Investing in Pamplona: Don't Let Your Net Worth Be Trampled
In Irrational Markets and the Illusion of Prosperity, author Don DeVitto makes a VERY COMPELLING argument why Americans are experiencing one of the greatest speculative eras in recorded history. DeVitto combines his extensive knowledge of historical periods of severe speculation, in particular the 1920s in America and the 1980s in Japan, with almost 20 years of working "on the front lines" with individual investors, to draw a very insightful, yet sobering picture.

DeVitto writes: "Investors are now looking back at the reality of the last decade rather than forward to the risks that lie ahead." He argues quite convincingly that "the deflationary risks in today's global economy are more pronounced than at any time since the 1930's."

DeVitto reveals that our passion for stocks, combined with an ever-increasing debt burden at both the individual and corporate level, have left our nation with little wiggle room should we experience a recession of any lasting duration. He argues that as the "wealth effect" begins to evaporate, the confidence or psychology of most investors will erode, and, as consumers, will quickly discover that both their capacity and desire to buy goods and services have diminished markedly.Given that consumers represent 2/3 of the economy, it doesn't take a nuclear scientist to figure out what can happen to corporate earnings, which, ultimately, are a stock's only lifeboat.

DeVitto writes in plain english and incorprates his graphs in a very user-friendly way, making the book accessible to all readers. Irrational Markets is a very smooth read, and at under 200 pages can be incorporated into even the busiest of schedules.

Despite the fact the NASDAQ is currently 50% off its highs reached in March of 2000, this book is no less timely. In fact, should some of the concerns raised by DeVitto become a reality, most Americans will be elated to return to their February 2001 account values.

DeVitto's book is A MUST READ for any equity investor, especially bullish investors like myself who have embraced technology stocks with the same passion a 16 year-old boy embraces his prom date. I'm confident readers will find this book well worth their time and the investment (the price of the book and a bottle of TUMS)as it will serve as a much needed yield sign through the frenetic intersection of Equity Street and Net Worth Avenue, Pamplona, USA.

Japan's Capitalism : Creative Defeat and Beyond
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (13 July, 1996)
Author: Shigeto Tsuru
Amazon base price: $22.00
Used price: $5.95
Average review score:

an insider's view of japan's post-war economy
Among the many (usually lengthy) works on the subject of Japan's post-war economy, this slim (pp277) volume is outstanding. The well-connected, Harvard-educated Tsuru was intimately involved in many of the landmark events described, especially the shaping of economic policy during the Occupation years. Throughout this lively and original analysis of economic policy-making and its political contexts, he provides an invaluable insider's view. Tsuru's socialist sympathies mean he is not just another capitalist apologist, ready to overlook the social costs of Japan's high-speed growth, but neither is he an ideologue unable to recognise the achievements. His approach is humane, often refreshingly personal, and anchored by a profound knowledge of his subject. There are insights throughout, such as the way the credit squeeze imposed in 1949-50 by Joseph Dodge helped revive the zaibatsu, by knocking out their competition, at a time when declared US policy was the elimination of the old corporate cartels. Anyone interested in understanding how Japan's economy took off and where it might be headed now should read this book.
