Learning by example - the ones already written that is.
Working with JavaScript is certainly becoming more and more a part of the web pages I am involved with, from wanting a clock to form validation to buttons. There is so many things and uses for JavaScript that the list seems endless.

What I found most helpful about this book was not only was the cd filled with over 300 pre-written scripts, but that the book also has coding examples for you to follow and learn from. For me learning JavaScript is a challenge and using the examples in this book has certainly it easier to produce quality JavaScripts.

Overall an excellent add-on the already highly successful JavaScript Bible, as you'll see when you look at the chapter headings. For example Chapter 1 in this book refers to chapter 15 in the JavaScript Bible.

Readers Review
This book provides insights into the healing ministry by telling the story of Patricia's own experiences, and by her sharing tips and suggestions in a more teacher-student kind of way. This swapping between styles can be confusing at times, but there is enough "quality" information to keep you reading to the end.

For me, this book was also an introduction to the Charismatic and Catholic ways of doing things, both of which are different to what I am used to. This is not the focus or aim of the book, just a consequence of the context of stories shared.

Perhaps the thing that surprised me most was how down to earth it all was, with regular reference to medical practice. The author is keen to show the vast array of ways in which God brings healing into people's lives. She explains that God wants to heal every part of a person's life, and that He will deal with different things in different ways.

If like me you have an interest in the healing ministry, but have little experience of it, this is a good book to read. I will be reading it again!

The Kurdish Question and Turkey: An Example of a Trans-State Ethnic Conflict
Published in Hardcover by Frank Cass & Co (September, 1997)
Authors: Kemal Kirisci and Gareth M. Winrow
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

This book is an objective review of the Kurdish Question
The Kurdish Problem has been one of the main problems of modern Turkey. The ethnic conflict in this region caused more than 30.000 deaths and tens of thousands of wounded physically and mentally. This book with its writers from Bogazici University of Istanbul is an objective (as mush as it can be) examination of the problem. The book does not reflect any of the sides preferably. It proposes solutions that can be accepted by both sides of the conflict which make it more realistic. The book is written mainly for "foreigners" who are not in this region and thus it gives a thorough information about the problem with its historical, social, political and economic aspects. It also gives teoric background for the issues of ethnicity, minority, nation etc.

If you are curious of this subject and want to discuss about the realistic solutions to the Kurdish Problem, and need a brief source of information, I strongly recommend this book to you.

Excellent Tutorial for Beginner/Intermediate
If you learn by example rather than by formalism, get this book. This presents the material in a logical framework with LOTS OF EXAMPLES. A companion volume is "The Mathematica Handbook", also by the same two writers. I used these books extensively in grad school. I remember standing in the university bookstore for 30 min comparing the handful of books available on Mathematica and these two books won out then and now still cover the fundamentals well. I still use them in my work today.

NOTE: The volume I have only covers up to Ver 2.2, but I noticed the latest has 1997 copyright, so might now cover later versions.

A beautiful, inspiring book
This is a beautiful book, full of inspiration. If your intention is to follow Jesus in your parenting as in other aspects of your life, but wonder what that would look in the day to day of parenting, that's what this book is all about. An experienced, thoughtful mother, Sally is full of encouragement from a mother who has been there and done that. When we feel, as mothers, that we can't give any more, Sally reminds us of the One who has gone before us and in Whom we find encouragement. She has many ideas for making a family lifestyle that incorporates Christian acts of hospitality, service, charity, prayer, discipleship and more. A lot of Christian parenting books are long on how to control your child and short on how to model a vibrant, meaningful Christian life that involves your children in ways they can understand. That's one of the many strengths of this book.

Nahuatl As Written: Lessons in Older Written Nahuatl, With Copious Examples and Texts (Nahuatl Series, No. 6.)
Published in Paperback by Stanford Univ Pr (September, 2001)
Author: James Lockhart
Amazon base price: $20.97
List price: $29.95 (that's 30% off!)

Excellent for self-study
This book provides a fantastic introduction to Nahuatl. The book provides excellent explanations of Nahuatl grammar and uses, from the very start, (as promised) a large number of examples of sentences or phrases to illustrate the grammatical points covered in each lesson.

The book is intended to be an introduction covering the major points of Nahuatl grammar. A few actual texts are provided in the back for work upon completion of the lessons, and there are a few complex and esoteric topics in grammar that Lockhart leaves the reader to investigate with the help of Horacio Carochi's Grammar (available in the dual-language edition translated and annotated by Lockhart).

Together with Carochi's grammar, this book should prepare the student for reading Nahuatl texts.

Nicaragua : the threat of a good example?
Published in Paperback by Oxfam Distributed by Oxfam America (1985)
Author: Dianna Melrose
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $114.20
Average review score:

A book of tremendous social and historical value
Dianna Melrose's "Nicaragua : the threat of a good example?" tells a side of the Sandanista struggle for social justice and freedom that most North Americans know little about. Before the Sandanistas came to power in Nicaragua Samoza and later the National Guard (renamed the Contras or "freedom fighters") was carrying out massive atrocities in the war against the Sandinistas, killing tens of thousands of people, all with the blessing of the United States. Ronald Reagan launched a large-scale terrorist war against Nicaragua, combined with economic warfare that was even more lethal in crippling Nicaragua and limiting the effectiveness of Sandanista reforms as they had to redirect massive amounts of money from social programmes to military expenditures in order to combat the Contras and the US.

In "Nicaragua : the threat of a good example?" Dianna Melrose explains why the US went to such lengths to sabotage the Sandanista government: the Sandanista revolution was a threat because it was an example of how one small nation could overcome the oppression and subjugation of the world's largest economic and military superpower.

In fact, Melrose explains, the international development organization Oxfam explained the real reasons, stating that, from its experience of working in 76 developing countries, "Nicaragua was... exceptional in the strength of that government's commitment... to improving the condition of the people and encouraging their active participation in the development process." Melrose reports that Nicaragua showed a substantial effort to address inequities in land ownership and to extend health, educational and agricultural services to poor peasant families. In the early 1980s, the World Bank called its projects "extraordinarily successful in Nicaragua in some sectors, better than anywhere else in the world." In 1983, The Inter-American Development Bank concluded that "Nicaragua has made noteworthy progress in the social sector, which is laying the basis for long-term socio-economic development."

"Nicaragua : the threat of a good example?" vividly illustrates the the true values of "neo-liberal free-market economics", its dependence on terrorism to stifle public dissent and how most in the First World pay only lip-service to the principles of social justice, freedom, egalitarianism amd integrity. A book of tremendous social and historical value.
