Borland C++4 By Example lives up to it's name ...an EXAMPLE!
As a beginner to C++, I enrolled in a local Tech College Program. I exhausted their library resources and bought almost every available C++ book at my local Barnes & Noble, Waldenbook Store and Books A Million. I ran accross a copy of Potts and Monk's book on a discount table at Books A Million (won't reveal price of course) and began to read, then used the source codes, which were well written and explained in a more comprehensable manner than other references. The 3 levels of examples were down to earth and more real than those in other reference books. This book has earned a distinct place in my ever-growing collection of reference materials. I highly recommend it as a source for a beginning C++ programmer, not that the others can't help, after all, it all adds up. B.W.GOFF, MSGT, USAF (RETIRED)

If only all programming books were this concise
Wow!

Thank you Mr.Levinson. Finally, a programming text that is easy to understand and relevant to modern application development.

This book is my new bible. I highly recommend it to anyone interested and capable of this level of programming.

I especially appreciated the examples, which were not only easy to implement, but presented a logical step-wise approach to the client/server model under .Net.

C* - Algebras by Example (Texts and Readings in Mathematics)
Published in Hardcover by Hindustan Book Agency (1996)
Author: Kenneth R. Davidson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

We learn from examples!
The theory of C*-algebras grew from applications, such as
quantum theory and group representations. The continued
vitality of the subject owes much to the study of examples, such as the approximately finite-dimensional C*-algebras(also called AF-algebras), the Cuntz algebras, the reduced group-C*-algebras, and the examples from physics, based on Fock space techniques.
More ambitious classification schemes then flow from a closer
study of the examples. A great book for a beginning grad course!

Canadian Dental Aptitude Example Tests & Soap Carving Guide : TopScore Pro for the Canadian DAT

Great Review, Soap Carving was helpful
This review CD was great.

The cd has a lot of questions and tells you where you need to study. I couldn't believe that there was software out that would even have a soap carving guide too.

I liked the soap carving guide. It has a lot of actual color pictures that goes step by step. I think it helped me finish the carving when I wrote the real test.

I also like the timer that showed you which question you were suppose to be on.

This is a nice deal. The company's website Scholarware.com also has some good advice on studying and getting into dental school

I definitely recommend this product.

Combining and Modifying SAS Data Sets: Examples
Published in Paperback by SAS Publishing (August, 1995)
Author: Sas Institute
Amazon base price: $26.95
Buy one from zShops for: $26.00
Average review score:

Very Good for the Intermediate to Advanced User
This book is best suited for intermediate to advanced SAS programmers who need to merge or otherwise combine or modify data sets. Although the MERGE command is quite simple, it can be quite tricky if not fully understood: Merge commands may combine your data in unexpected ways that won't always show as errors in your program log. Thus, it is extrememly important to know exactly what the program is doing.

There are numerous helpful examples that are divided into programming "goal," "strategy," "input data set(s)," "resulting data set," "program," and "where to go from here" (references to further discussions of the topic). As shown in the following brief excerpt, readers will benefit by knowing some programming terminology: "Goal: Within the same data set, look ahead from a variable value in one observation to return the value of the same variable in the observation that immediately follows it."

Chapter 1. An Introduction to Data Relationships, Access Methods, and Techniques for Data Manipulation.

Chapter 2. Combining Single Observations with Single Observations.

Chapter 3. Combining a Single Observation with Multiple Observations.

Chapter 4. Combining Multiple Observations with Multiple Observations.

Chapter 5. Manipulating Data From a Single Source.

Chapter 6. Utilities and Functions.

The last two chapters emphasize modifying rather than combining data sets, and have a great deal of useful information (e.g., adding new observations to the end of a data set, simulating the LEAD function, adding a new variable that contains the frequency of a by-group value, converting character and numeric variables, producing equal-sized random samples, etc.). PROC SQL is sometimes used in the programs. The 197-page book has many well-organized examples, and includes an appendix on error checking and a useful index.
