Benchmarking Workbook: With Examples and Ready-Made Forms

Not a Bad Book, but . . .
This workbook is filled with sample forms for a variety of uses. Unfortunately, it's a little sketchy as to the applicability of each form. The book is intended to be a companion to Karlof's prior work, "Benchmarking: A Signpost to Excellence and Productivity". The biggest disappointment is the price. The book has a text book price -- it's a paperback! At that price you would at least expect forms that are closer to letter sized. Based on the pricing of the paperback edition, the hardback must be over $200. This book is hardly a value.

For a book about awards this needs work
This book has the worst table of contents that I have ever seen. You need to be an insider to understand it; but, if you are an insider you don't need this book.

Why is the table of contents do important? This is a reference book designed to help budget officer prepare better budgets. It would be the rare user that attempts to read this book cover to cover. Most users want to review a particular award criteria. With such a poor table of contents, the user must thumb through the entire book to find the section desired.

This is the only GFOA book I have considered sending back. I would recommend that users find an other community than has recieved the award and ask for copies of their budget. The really serious budget officer should become a budget reviewer and recieve budgets free on a monthly basis.

I gave this book a second star since I do use it when needed and it has helped. It does provoke me to curse about the table of contents each time I use it.

(GFOA: please note that this book has a section on preparing the table of contents. Read it.)

C++ by Example: Object-Oriented Analysis, Design & Programming/Book and Disk

This is more of a giant program listing than a book
If you are some kind of gear-head that loves to read through program listings, this is the book for you, bubba! It is about 90% code and 10% commentary on the code. Dorfman even chooses classes that only a true gearhead could love, like 'key', 'mouse', 'event', 'window' etc. rather than abstracting real business-world items such as 'customer', 'account', 'order', etc. As if that's not exciting enough, the platform of choice for this text is DOS (yawn).

Recommended for small, Christian, male support groups.
This book is a short guide for men who are seeking to participate in male, Christian support/mentoring groups. This book provides a very structured format for group meetings. I would not recommend this book to readers with any other purpose. It is instead a good starter guide for the aforementioned audience.

Nathan Wallace's Delphi 3 Example Book (Programmer's Example Series)

Nathan Wallace's Delphi 3 Example Book
A total waste of money. Includes a CD which only has hyperlinks to a non-existent web site, the contents of the CD is contrary to what is described on the back cover. Email's sent to the publishers regarding the CD were ignored.

Do not include this book in your library. The Delphi Online Help is of better value.

Book is redundant
I was very dissatisfied with the content of the book. The examples given were very rudimentary and offered less than the Delphi help file.

Totally Incomplete
I purchased this book from Amazon in good faith assuming that it would contain data which is sorely missing from the Delphi supplied material. To my surprise, the data I need was not put in print. Instead, chapters 14 thru 20 are placed on the accompanying CD. OK I guess, but not convenient as a good reference tool. When I looked on the CD to find the data I needed, I discovered the CD does not work. I then went to the support web site, only to find that it hasn't been updated since the first week of February, and has absolutely no usable data except an admission that the CD does not work. I feel cheated, even to the point of fraud. I intend to pursue a refund from the publisher. Amazon doesn't need to tarnish their name with this kind of missrepresented work either.

A sloppy mish-mash!
As an addendum to my earlier review: Give the devil his due! There IS an internet address, at the end of the introduction.
In this introduction we are told that what we should type is shown BOLD...Example: page 87, for main with arguments, args One Two and Three are NOT bold.
More mixings of the UNDERC prompts(>;) with NO prompts!
But the book is jammed with all kinds of good stuff..to advanced for a beginner!
The implementation of the GNU and BORLAND compilers is not for a beginner...
I bought the book mainly for the "free" CD. You gets what you pays for!
With better (at least some!) editing...and rewriting and less ambition, this book could be a winner!

Sloppy!
I'm only in the 1st chapter. Not for a beginner! Author mixes up UnderC and "ordinary c" prompts! Does not define new terms, such as String&. Does not give an update-errata web site.
UnderC is a good idea,, but one does not know where he is in a program, cannot go back and make corrections.
Pretty much a waste of time...perhaps later chapters will be better.

not worth it
if you are a beginner, and this book claims to be aimed at beginners, steer clear.

The examples are poorly worked and poorly explained

Frustrating Errors
Having taken the class at UW-Madison for which this book was written, and my instructor being Karen Miller (one of the authors), even she admitted to the great number of errors. It is highly frustrating to open the book read something, and then wonder, "Gee, is this correct?" Constantly referring to Karen's list of webpage errors was frustrating. Chapter 9 was completely re-written and made available to us in PDF format because the book's version was poor.

I'm shocked that the university is still using the text. Though it was only slightly easier to follow the material since the author was also my instructor, she also seemed annoyed that through some departmental/political/publishing snafu that they are still using the text 10yrs later.

Avoid this book if you have a choice.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
THIS BOOK STARTS OUT WELL, AND THEN DEGENERATES INTO ERRORS, ERRORS, ERRORS, AND MORE ERRORS. THE CONCEPTS IN THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS ARE EXPLAINED TERRIBLY. I FEEL GENUINELY SORRY FOR ANYBODY TRYING TO GET AN INTRO TO COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE CONCEPTS BY READING THIS BOOK.

This book instructs very little, and most of the examples are birds, birds and more birds. Well, I'm no ornithologyst and I know that this book could have diversified more on the examples session. Buy this only if you have a thing for drawing birds.

Simply Incomprehensible!
The author of this book may be a great logician, but he compunicates his ideas extremely badly, making this book agonisingly difficult to read.

The author is clearly not a native English speaker, and avoids explaining any concepts in depth, instead using page after page of Prolog code to demonstrate principles.

This tiny book really isn't worth the paper its printed on.
