JavaBeans by example emphasizes Java development w/VisualAge
This book covers virtually all aspects of the Javabeans API. It gives very well developed examples for the building blocks of the Javabeans API such as events, properties, introspection, property editors and more. The book also discusses internationalization, distribution and RMI, persistency, security, and printing. Integrated development environments are discussed. As the book is a joint venture between Prentice-Hall and IBM, special attention is given to IBM's VisualAge for Java IDE. An entry level version of VisualAge for Java is included on a CD that accompanies this text. (Note that this version is freely available from IBM's website -- you don't have to purchase the book to download it). Notably missing from the CD included with this book are interchange files for use in VisualAge for Java which the authors could have used to record Visual builder information they develop in the course of the text. However, the wealth of information given in the book and CD is very useful, and will be of singular interest to VisualAge for Java users. Others will find it an interesting and useful source of information. It makes an excellent companion for another title -- Developing Java Beans -- by Oreilly publishing.

Excellent Maple Reference
The book 'Maple V By Example' is an excellent book on Maple. It is very well written and provides a clear and easy to follow description of Maple V. The examples used in the book are well chosen.

One possible improvement would be to provide a summary of commands and function at the end of each section. Otherwise a very good job!

Good for teaching or study!
This book is organized by terms of harmonic content. The book is divided into three sections: Diatonic Materials, Chromatic Materials, and Twentieth Century Materials. It contains an analytic checklist and sample analysis that can be used as a guide to the student. An index of composers makes it easy to study the musical style of a particular composer. The excerpts can be played by any competant keyboard player. This book contains mostly excerpts, but a few sections that contain a complete piece or movement of a piece. The selections are not analyzed, which makes for fun practice at analyzing them yourself!

The New limerick : 2750 unpublished examples, American and British

THERE WAS A YOUNG . . . . FROM . . . .
Without missing a beat, THE NEW LIMERICK continues what THE LIMERICK started. The 2750 limericks in this second volume of limericks are every bit as raunchy, erotic, and irreverent as were the 1700 in the first volume. Believe it or not, I found one that could be published on these pages. (It was the only one, I think.)

"Here are neatly turned odes of small span,

Much concerned with our bodily plan,

. . . . . . . And the intercorporeal

. . . . . . . Highly sensorial

Love-life of woman and man."

That's the clean one, You'll have to read the book for the other 2749.

Another half for "Numerical Recipes in C"
If you just see Numerical Recipes ,you will annoy the exact usage of codes. It is the practical book for the usage of codes in "Numerical Recipes". For real world, this is more helpful than "Numerical Recipes"

You can access a PL/SQL executable with this book
Very much a task oriented book, suitable for a classroom or self paced study. It is aimed at someone who wants or needs explicit lessons and exercises. Thoughtfully, the authors also furnished answers to the exercises. Sometimes with other computing books, I have wondered why their authors omit questions. Perhaps the nature of the topic makes it awkward to provide problem sets. But not for Oracle's PL/SQL language. So this book is chock-a-block with them.

To students, retention is greatly enhanced by doing, and the book will take you a long way into facility with PL/SQL if you can discipline yourself to go through it methodically and not peek at the answers till you have given the problems a fair go.

As far as the language itself, the book's presentation reminds me of a text on fortran or C, and unlike a text on java or C#. Firstly, the latter two are object-oriented, while PL/SQL, fortran and C are procedural. So if you have already learnt fortran or C and you read this book, step back and defocus a little from the specific syntax. Stylistically, the book has the flavour of many texts in those languages. Reinforced by PL/SQL not having a GUI. The I/O is character based. A slight retro feel. [Though PL/SQL should NOT have a GUI. It is optimised as a query language.]

One thing to note is that the book explains using examples and exercises that are at the subroutine or procedural level, as mentioned above. Bite sized. What it lacks are higher level examples that necessitate decomposing a problem into several procedures. But this may be unfair. Those are harder, more abstract issues, whereas this book is meant for someone who still needs to learn the syntax in the first place. It does suggest the utility of such a book, as a logical successor to this.

A final note relates to the problem sets. There is a difficulty with learning PL/SQL compared to, say, C or java. With C you can download an open source compiler. With java, you can get a free compiler from Sun or IBM. With SQL, there is the open source MySQL. Not so with PL/SQL. I don't think Oracle offers a free version. So if you are studying on your own, this is a severe quandary. How do you get a PL/SQL executable? Otherwise, the attraction of this book, or any other on PL/SQL, for that matter, is greatly restricted to classrooms or companies that already have that, and not to individuals. Well, the authors and the publisher offer access, at the publisher's website. This may be the strongest merit of the book.

Pattern for reconciliation of science & metaphysics
This near-death experiencer has recovered, despite grave odds and near impossibility, an experience of severe oxygen deprivation. Though it took her many months to retrieve the information that was given to her during her NDE, she is able to articulate both the process and the implications of this geometrical marvel, from both a scientific and a metaphysical perspective. The Pattern shows great promise as a tool for humanity to continue the struggle to chart a course for a win-win future. Physicists and spiritual seekers alike will be fascinated to read about this gift from beyond.

Practical Digital Video Programming with Examples in C
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (February, 2000)
Author: Phillip E. Mattison

A very practical introduction to digital video
It is an interesting book for programmers who want to understand how digital video is processed, starting with simple and comprehensive introduction on different storage media types like magnetic disks, tapes and optical storage. Another interesting part is how video camera work and how computer displays work. These introductions would help in understanding the following sections that cover data compression and image and video processing standards like jpeg, mpeg, and h261. The source code is useful but it needs more explanation for non-highly skilled programmers in C. Overall it is one of the best books that I've read.
