Structural Renovation of Buildings: Methods, Details, & Design Examples

A staple handbook for renovation
In my office where projects are small commercial or residential, I find Mr. Newman's book a basic resource for renovation work. This comprehensive handbook provides either a solution or more considerations that were not obvious at first. It is a main staple I turn to for guidance on renovations of all structure types and materials.

A good handbook for a difficult subject
This book is well organized and presented. It covers a lot, and is more comprehensive than other books of its type. It has very good material on concrete design/repair, and also covers wood structures, steel, and pre-engineered buildings quite well. The material on masonry is also good, but a discussion about rusted steel lintels embedded in masonry would have helpful, as this is a common source of problems in 20th century buildings. There are few handbooks that come as close as this one to a thorough treatment of the subject, and it is a useful book for architects and engineers who deal with renovation.

Swedish Sweaters: New Designs from Historical Examples (An International Craft Classic)

I continue to enjoy this book...
...unlike most of the knitting books I own, this one I pick up when I want to be thrilled with the workmanship of our ancestors. The old swedish sweaters might be moth-eaten but the handiwork is shown in some detail.I haven't tried any of the sweaters -- the instructions seem on the difficult side.A shame that this is out of print, as would make a nice gift.

Beautiful historical sweaters; nice contemporary designs
This book is a combination of two parts -- historical sweaters and contemporary designs. Part One consists of 27 historical Swedish sweaters, most knitted in the mid 19th century. The color photographs are beautiful and in most cases charts of the design elements are included. An experienced knitter would be able to construct a pattern for most of these sweaters using the charts given. Part Two contains 14 patterns for contemprary designs, based on the historical sweaters. The designs are very nice and most are knitted with sportweight or finer yarn.

explanatory but too much jargon
it's a good book but you should keep in hand a law dictionary.

Great Book By A Great Teacher
Gerry Beyer was my "Wills and Trusts" professor in law school. He was my favorite teacher, and the favorite of many of my fellow law students, for several reasons: first of all, he had an excellent command of the law. There wasn't an aspect of it he didn't know. Secondly, he taught in a clear and concise manner. Many of my law professors were "hide-the-ball" types: their clumsy use of the Socratic method left students lost and confused. When Professor Beyer lectured, you knew exactly what point he was trying to make. You didn't have to guess at it. Finally, he was a warm, friendly, humorous guy - very approachable and not at all intimidating, a rare trait in a lawyer. This book is everything Professor Beyer is: knowledgeable, approachable, and clear. And as a rookie attorney in the field of wills, trusts, and estate planning, this is the book I turn to first and foremost as a reference. That said, I believe this book is most appropriate for law students, paralegals, practicing attorneys, and others who need a serious grasp of wills, trusts, and estate planning law. Those who want a simple, cursory introduction may find themselves overwhelmed by all the legal jargon - as was mentioned by a previous reviewer.

Acting in Opera: With Descriptive Examples, Practical Hints and Numerous Illustrations
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (May, 1981)
Author: George Edward Shea
Amazon base price: $30.00

The End of a Long Tradition
"Acting in Opera" by George Shea is a reprint of a 1915 acting manual for opera singers. It marks the tail end of a long, unbroken tradition of acting books and rules that date from the 17th century. Amazingly, much of the advice and many of the rules in the text are taken almost word for word from acting manuals from the past 200 years - Franciscus Lang, Engels, Jelgerhuis and Gilbert Austin. This tradition has it's last incarnation in the stylized and quite beautiful acting style used in silent pictures - where the body was more important than the voice. Anyone with an interest in theatre history should take a look at this book - the illustrations are priceless - for a glimpse of a period when tenors were expected to do more than belt out high C's and sweat on cue. - Bob Skiba Acting and Gesture Historian

An inspiring piece of work
Although I could discuss their definition of Knowledge Management (KM) and therefore the distinction they make between KM and benchlearning, I found this book very, very inspiring! It provides the background to support the theories and offers a process organisations can use to incorporate learning through examples on their culture.

Very helpful. One can find the basics of DSP
This book is written more like a text book. The DSP techniques are explained in a very simple way. No special need to be acquaintant with the DSP before reading it. If one is proficient in this field, there is nothing new to learn from the book.

Classical Galois theory, with examples

Classical Galois Theory
Classical Galois Theory deals, in essence, with the solutions to polynomial equations. Its applications are spectacular, including the algebraic result that some polynomial equations of degree >= 5 can't be solved in radicals, and the geometrical result that the cube can't be doubled by ruler-and-compass constructions. Today Galois theory is tought very abstractly, such that advanced mathematics students can follow the proofs, but perhaps will have difficulty in working out concrete problems. Lisl Gaal's book (1971) admirably fills in this gap. It contains numerous practical exercises, and it is much easier to read and understand than most contemporary textbooks on the subject.

The book does not require any significant prerequisites, since it develops the necessary background of group theory and field theory from scratch. It can be read and understood by any bright undergraduate mathematics major. I've studied Galois Theory from more advanced textbooks, but feel that I've understood it better for reading Gaal's book and working out the numerous exercises in it. I would recommend this book very highly as a supplementary text to any undergraduate course in abstract algebra, and even as a refresher for graduate students who are studying for their prelims.

Counter-Examples in Probability and Statistics

Authors: J P Romano and A F Siegel
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $93.18

clever collection of counterintuitive examples
Although the title suggests statistical examples, the text is primarily a collection of counterexamples in probability. The authors write in an engaging style. This was the first book for both authors but each has gone on to author or co-author at least one other book.

This book is perfect for a graduate student in mathematics or statistics with a serious interest in probability. It is particularly good if they have just completed their first advanced course in probability theory as the concepts would be fresh.

A warning though. This is great for those seriously interested in probability but would be difficult reading for those with just a passing interest.

Criminal Procedure: Examples and Explanations

Really Good Text. Great for Exams.
This is a book and series that I would recommend to any law student. One of the problems I have found about law school is there is a lot of reading without very much learning. The essence of it is that the case method doesn't work and the practical skills you lack are blaring on the first day you show up at your job.

The nice thing about this book is that it acknowledges that the cases don't do you much good unless you understand how they affect the client or his circumstances. This book is filled with examples and answers for each type of case you study. This proves extremely, extremely, valuable when its time for the exam and you are looking at fact patters.

In addition, I have hated previous guides because they don't recognize that we have gone to class and we need a new way to look at the issue. This book gives you short introduction, so your not reading twenty pages before actually trying to learn something.

The only weakness with this book is that Crim Pro is almost exclusively constitutional law and not statutory. As a result, the brevity of text I just praised makes it a bit difficult to see how cases at times might work together. This becomes a little more apparent when you switch from issues with the Fourth Amendment to issues with the Fifth. While the two work together much of the time, I wanted more of a line in the sand.

This book is great though if you are using it with a casebook. You will be very glad you bought it. I would also highly recommend this book to those of you who freeze up in exams. The examples in this book will allow you see the fact patterns before and save you time under pressure.

Data Quality Problems in Army Logistics: Classification, Examples, and Solutions

A must read for all.
First, this publication is available for free online. Simply search the title and you'll be lead to the Rand Corp. or the Arroyo Center site where you can download the PDF file.

This is a great data quality case study because it doesn't require intimate knowlewdge of Army logistics systems. Instead of concentrating their efforts on all of the attributes of one particular system, Rand Corp. and the Arroyo Center decided to select important attributes from a few systems to use in a data quality discussion. Although the study was published in the mid 90s little has changed and the information is still applicable.

This is a must read for all Army logisticians and the Army auditors that review those systems as well as those who are interested in data quality as a subject. It is true that corporations and governments alike are losing millions each year because they continue to base important decisions on poor and inadequate data.
