Business Statistics by Example

Very good book for learning and consulting
It's a very useful book for learning statistics focused on business. Based on a solid theory, it gives you many practical case studies. The approach is not superficial, but the beginners will find a safe path for improvement and for the comprehension of the subjects.

Excellent Starting Point for Business students
I've used this textbook in the Athabasca University MBA program. The "Quantitative Analysis" course is an introductory course in statistics, with a focus on business applications. This text is perfect, as the examples used are directly relevant to businesspeople. There are also many questions and exercises, with the answers provided in the back of the book for all the odd-numbered questions. This allows students to practice and check their answers, while still allowing the professor to assign even-numbered questions as practice work to be checked by her later. The text starts with basic statistics, moves into probability, and continues all the way into multiple regression and non-parametric statistics. Real data sets are used liberally, and there are tutorials for SAS, SPSS, Minitab and ASP. Each section clearly defines critical terms offset from the body of the text, and the over 1000 exercises use data from real-world examples. Each chapter has exercises divided into "Learning the Mechanics" (straightforward applications of new concepts) and "Applying the Concepts" (applications of concepts to the solution of real-world problems). If you're a business student having difficulty with statistics, I'd recommend this book as an excellent primary or companion text.

Fine statistical teaching
Great book for beginners, and a good reference for more advanced statistical professionals. Logically structured, and written in real-world terms, this book is easy to read and follow. Sincich provides the reader with an understanding of statistical application in the every day world, bringing statistics out of the textbook and into reality. A superb guide to fundamental statistical principles.

Great for research!
As a student, this book was very helpful for my research paper on Texas mammals. I recommend it to anyone interested in Texas wildlife.

THE single best reference for Exotics
This is it. The best resource for exotic livestock, period. Although it focuses on Texas, the information contained herein is applicable to most regions. It goes into great detail regarding land carrying capacity, fencing requirements, nutritional needs and health concerns/diseases/parasites. The history of exotics in Texas is examined, as well as distribution of various species throughout the state. But the real appeal of this book is the depth in which individual species are detailed. The most popular hoofstock are here, of course: axis, fallow, red and sika deer; blackbuck, addax, scimitar, nilgai and eland antelope; ibex, mouflon; markhor and aoudad sheep/goats; and many other species that are either failed experiments or novelties.

Whether you're a student doing research or a farmer/rancher looking for a way to escape the heartache/headache of cattle, this is the best book you could hope to find.

A very useful reference.
We have read and reread parts of this book. It is an excellent reference. We raise Red Deer, Axis Deer, Blackbuck Antelope, Fallow Deer, Whitetail Deer and Barbado Sheep and all are covered very well by the book. In addition, the book helped me to calculate the carrying capacity of our ranch.

Excellent reference dictionary for non-experts
Mr. Angeles has put together a compact and clear volume of various philosophical terms, as well as brief biographies of all major philosophers. The dictionary is extremely valuable to those, such as myself, who do not formally study philosophy yet wish to understand basic mechanisms and terminology. Of particular interest is the list of informal logical fallacies (under FALLACIES, informal). How many times have you listened to some blathering politician or read some moronic, glib newspaper article and been convinced that the author was being illogical? If that's happened to you more than once, then the informal logical fallacies Mr. Angeles lays out are just the thing for you. My only complaint about the book is its lack of inclusion of religious philosophy (for example, it does not have a brief section discussing the basis principles of Islam or Buddism).

Really neat
As a philosopher or philosophy student, it goes without saying that you need more than just one philosophical dictionary. Here's a good one. I use it to supplement my other dictionary, Simon Blackburn's "Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy" (ISBN 0192831348), which is also excellent. One dictionary may have more or different information on one term, or even have a term another may not list, and vice versa, and so different philosophical dictionaries complement one another very well that way. This dictionary here in particular makes it easy to find terms and has concise and to-the-point explanations. To be recommended.

Excellent, compact and to the point.
This dictionary was recommended to me for my philosophy courses. I was rewarded by its usefullness and concise, direct definitions. I found it a valuable asset to my core philosophy courses and will certainly keep it on my shelf for further reference.

AMazing...
Seriously... a good quick read... very balanced young man. So ethical it disgusts me. If more people like John Popeo existed, the world would be a scary place...

Excellent
The title sounds amazing and insightful. Although the mysteries of the North End have still not been unraveled, business ethics of this caliber are essential in this day and age.

Excellent Read
This book is a concise examination of the issues surrounding business scandals. The world would be a better place if leaders understood the points that Mr. Popeo raises. I have found the lessons invaluble.

Very interesting reference
I enjoyed this very much. I wish there could have been more photographs, but that would have been a different book. This is almost exclusively line drawings.

Very helpful and informative. Warning: trying to duplicate these in decorative metal today is *expensive*. Architectural salvage might be more affordable than starting from scratch.

Beautiful Work
I have a different use for this book than perhaps the typical buyer. I bought it because I love adapting these iron designs into borders or patterns for my pen and ink drawings and paintings. Each page was such a delight when I discovered this book I bought it immediately. You need not use it as a home furnishings book. It works just as well as an inspiring art book.

Great for Designers
I've worked in the Ornamental Iron business for 3 years as a designer and business manager. I use this book more than any other for generating some fresh, usually more elaborate design ideas. There are a number of styles represented in the many drawings. If you are interested in seeing unique and interesting wrought iron designs you will not be disappointed.

Good Fundamentals
There are many good books with this title or similar ones. This is probably one of the better ones for your bookshelf and for use in academia. The examples are written in Java (a current language) and they are easy to read. The presentation is clean and illustrative. The authors have a good track record for expertise and papers published, and you get the sense that it is more real-world than most similar books.

I like this book, it's done just right
Not too encyclopedic (like Knuth or Cormen), yet not superficial or cursory (like Sedgewick). I think it because it's really new and so it's written right, just as the times require. Beautifully illustrated too, a lot of very nice, clean pictures. The reviewer below mentions Java, well he's missing the point a bit: yes there's a hunk of Java in many chapters, but ALL algorithms are VERY NICELY covered in pseudo-code (something missing in Knuth, for example). All in all, a great book, if you've got the money to spare (Wiley prices are as always high, but in this case--unlike in many other--it really doesn't feel terribly wrong ), don't even think of it, get it. Alphabets from Early Samplers: Sixty-Four Examples from Samplers Dating from 1590 to 1868, With Charts & Authentic Color Schemes
Published in Paperback by Scarlet Letter (December, 1994)
Author: Marsha Van Valin
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

A Useful Reference
I have ordered sampler kits from Marsha van Valin's company (The Scarlet Letter) for years, so when I found out she had published a book on alphabets, I HAD to have it.

It's a valuable reference for the needlework designer (or even for the non-designer who is simply looking for a good alphabet to sign his or her name to a sampler!). All of the alphabets are taken from period samplers and Marsha provides documentation as well as clear, easy-to-follow graphs.

The book's about needlework, Amazon, not infidelity...
Exquisite. Finely written. Absolute dedication.
Altogether enjoyable. For anyone who loves all
avenues of a life well spent on earth. And, finally,
the books Amazon associates with this book -- on
dating, romantic and not -- are, of course, to
be polite, misguided.

Selling techniques over the phone, etc.
The author did a very good job of sticking to his objective of only teaching you cold calling techniques; that is, techniques to get the appointment, not techniques on how to sell once you got that appointment. He had many, many good ideas; some of which I learned, some of which I knew but had to be reminded of. I would recommend his book to anyone wanting to do a better job at cold call prospecting. The one big negative I would say about this book is that he took too many pages to get his points across, much too verbose. I got tierd of reading it, and kept telling myself, OK, when is he going to get to the point. Other than that, I would highly recommend the book.

Learn how to prospect
Boyan's book is essentially a book about prospecting and turning those prospects into appointments with potential customers. He teaches readers to present themselves as problem solvers to potential customers' concerns. The emphasis throughout the book is placed on the customers. Boyan devotes a chapter to customer psychology and gives consideration to the reasons why customers make purchasing decisions. Although somewhat simplified, his suggestion for addressing a customer's concern by paraphrasing it so the customer feels like you understand him, and then offering a solution can be used in a number of ways to persuade customers to make an appointment with you. The only problem is he only presents one way to address a customer's concerns and pretty soon the customer catches on to your technique and stops listening to you. But still I recommend it. It's worth [the price], and the techniques presented in this book have lead me to make appointments with customers that eventually lead to $5,000 aluminum siding sales, $8,000 kitchen remodeling sales, and $4,000 windows sales.

Phenomenal coaching from a real-life sales superstar !
First of all, my career background touches
many fields, such as computers, internet,
customer service, sales, telemarketing,
insurance, finance, telecommunications
and so on.

In a previous existence or job, I handled
thousands of outbound sales calls, mixed
with inbound, as well.

I've done veyr well well in my field, but also,
I've witnessed some sales superstars with equal
and sometimes, even better sales experience and
results than my own.

Reading the 260 pages of this book, by Mr Lee Boyan,
I have to admit this man is the right man to coach
veteran and newbie sales reps alike.

The door-to-door selling, or in personal sales,
coupled with telemarketing or outbound sales,
advice is obviously, plainly based in reality.

Frequently, the advice he gives, I find I've been
practicing many of those points all along, by
learning through my own mistakes, but also, by
knowing what worked the best, and by natural talent,
and also, by picking up from co-workers.

The bottom line, is that this book will easily FINE-TUNE
your own techniques, approaches. It will inform you
of new skills, perhaps you've never used in a job
situation (either on the phone, or in person, or
setting appointments). It will make you realize of many
small tricks you felt were "your own" but actually, are
techniques all pros should be using, all the time, on
the job.

This book was written 1983, and then revised in 1989,
yet it feels like it was written this year !!!

That's how good it is.

Competent enough
As another software deveoper coming to VHDL, I was reasonably satisfied with this book. It gives a strong description of the basic language features, including the ones usually skipped in intro texts. It skips the baby steps of logic design, and shows examples of most language constructs, including overloading.

I never thought I'd say it, but this VHDL book is actually a bit weak on the hardware side. It's description of processes and events seems incomplete, and the discussion of timing-related features is scant.

The description of synthesis is too brief to cover many of the common variations you'll come across. If you have scars from a few optimizing compilers, though, you'll be able to pick up what you need from your tools, co-workers, and experience. Place-and-route is worth understanding. Taking real control of it, though, is usually something done cautiously and within the context of specific tools and chip characteristics. A few chapters of the book focus on specific tools - naturally, not the ones I use. I found those missable.

On the whole, I find this book helpful. Perhaps other books are better, but lots of books are lots worse.

Good book, poor proofing
As an experienced C programmer I found this a useful introduction to VHDL but was worried by a number of obvious typos and missing/mislabelled diagrams - if I can catch the easy ones (starting with the cover and chapter 1!) with no knowledge of the subject what are the important ones I didn't get? At the very least the publishers need to put up an errata site unless there is one I couldn't find.

Very Nice Book
It is a very nice intro book on VHDL. And did a good job demonstrating VHDL on a simple CPU design.

A note to computer programmers:
Despite what most people thinks, VHDL is NOT a programming language. No more is Verilog HDL a programming language, and Verilog is somewhat like C. So don't read this book in the mindset of a computer science/software engineer view point.

Other than that, this is a great book for undergraduate computer engineers who have little or no background in VHDL.

Good introduction Light on technical how too
I was excited to purchase and read this book considering Microsoft's dismal documentation on how Windows Media 9 encoding works. By reading this book I was a little dissapointed to learn only an introduction into the technical aspects of encoding..It does give you an excellent overview of what this technology is capable of and there are some informative walk throughs...But the real technical encoding parameters are not covered, instead you are left with the author telling you to initially use the wizards then experiment for yourself. This is not what I wanted, I wanted to learn how to maximize my picture and sound quality through tweaking the settings, not the wizards which are based on very general conditions of your video and sound.
I highly recommend this book in any case but don't expect to walk away an expert nor to truly take advantage of Windows Media Encoding after reading this book. You will however have a much clearer understanding of available tools and a clearer picture on how it all works together.

Excellent Resource
If you've been waiting for an all-in-one book that leads you into the new world of Microsoft's Media 9--and all of its features--then Nels Johnson's book is the one for you.

Lucidly written, but never dry, the author walks you though all the new features of WM9, including how to use it with Microsoft's improved Movie Maker 2, how to encode your movies (or your songs) for delivery over the Web (as progressive download, for example, a much needed feature in my opinion, as a QuickTime user), or for delivery on CD and DVD and for handheld devices. Numerous examples and suggestions are provided for encoding.

Also, I was particularly pleased with the chapter on protecting your movies with Microsoft's Digital Rights Management software. Trying to get the lowdown on this from Microsoft's own site is nightmarish, but the author carefully describes all of the steps involved if you're serious about protecting your digital content.

This book belongs on the shelf of any serious digital video producer.

The age of high-quality, low-cost desktop video is here
And this is the book to get you off to a running start.

Windows Media 9 is arguably the best engineered bundle of media technologies available to individuals at a reasonable cost. The problem is, Microsoft has a habit of releasing huge bodies of technology and tools with different but overlapping functionality. Though it's great to have so many options, too many choices can be overwhelming to a beginner. There are plenty of ways to go down blind alleys or to waste time using sub-optimal settings when doing media captures or conversions.

This book is exactly what I needed to get over those initial hurdles. With clarity and conciseness it answers:

- What are the moving parts of Windows Media?
- What are their capabilities?
- How do you set them up for high-quality results without a lot of tweaking?
- When can you accept default settings and when do you customize?

With a conversational writing style and step-by-step recipes, the author shows how to "wrangle" media using free or low-cost software from Microsoft and other companies, including some little-known goodies from Microsoft's website.

In the few weeks I've had this book, it has already saved me real time on two projects. Variable-speed playback (which I would not have known was there!) helped me quickly find pertinent quotes in captured audiotapes of a series of interviews. And I was able to instantly hit on settings that gave great quality VHS captures for transfer to DVD without a lot of experimentation.

I use video and audio professionally, but I'm not a professional cinematographer. If you are, of course you will need to go beyond what this book can tell you. That is not a slam on the book. No book can encompass the scope available to a professional artist in any field. But Windows Media 9 Series By Example gave me exactly what I needed to start delivering high-quality video and audio to my clients with little more equipment than an ordinary desktop computer. Highly recommended.
