Leonardo's The Last Supper, painted in tempera on the damp walls of a dining room for the Dominican monks of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan, began falling apart in his lifetime. Five centuries of dust, mildew, and bad treatment (including vandalism by French 18th-century troops, Allied bombs in World War II, and various ham-handed attempts at cleaning and repainting) have only made things worse. The most recent restoration team went about the job with surgical precision, beginning in 1977. While much of the original is irrevocably lost, the fragments of paint that remain still form a deeply evocative and exquisitely rendered composition, and many of the faces have gained increased visibility and plasticity. More than 200 full-color pages painstakingly document every inch of the ghostly surface. Beginning with full views, the focus narrows until each image is presented in its actual size, interleaved with an all-black page for heightened clarity. To look so closely at the fragile network of paint flecks is to be acutely aware of the mystery of perception--that these flecks of color allow us to read each apostle's mood and personality as they reacted to Christ's words ("One of you will betray me"). The commentary, printed in pleasingly large type and fluidly translated from the Italian, is segregated from the major reproductions, allowing the fresco to speak for itself. An introductory text traces the history of the painting and its restorations, as well as shifts in critical opinion. In a lengthy, generously illustrated section at the back of the book, chief curator Pinin Brambilla Barcilon explains how she restored each portion of the masterwork. While this may be more than the casual reader cares to know, extraordinary attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of both the project and the book. --Cathy Curtis

Superb effort
For those who are interested in the highly controversial world of art conservation/restoration, this book is a must. For the first time in English, we have an in-depth account of the 20-plus year intervention on Leonardo's masterpiece, the Last Supper. The project, applauded by some and decried by many, is documented here with hundreds of color illustrations and an essay by the chief conservator of the project. This is largely the Italians' point of view, which is highly controversial. But as the English-language editors say in their preface, it is important that all informed voices be heard in the debate as to the originality of Leonardo's hand and just what sort of intervention was appropriate to this situation.

definitive and exquisite!
The focus of this book is the controversial restoration of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, an icon of Renaissance art and a fresco that was in trouble from the time Leonardo painted it using nontraditional fresco techniques. The difficulty of the restoration just completed lay in the problems of the original, which began to flake and and self-destruct soon after its completion. A number of attempts at restoration over the past several hundred years resulted in the destruction and/or replacement of a good deal of the original, and the contemporary restoration was an attempt to undo past mistakes and reveal as much as possible of the remaining original while preserving the piece. The extraordinary color images in this book depict virtually every square inch of the fresco before, during, and after the just-completed restoration. It is the best documentation we will ever have of a remarkable work and the struggle to keep it from vanishing.

From the publisher's description
Illustrated in full color, this little book traces the history of the Gummy Bears with deadpan text and 70 outlandish illustrations. It reveals the heretofore unknown role of Gummy Bears, those colorful, excessively chewy candy creatures, throughout history.

Funny Gummy's...
This book is very funny. The author is very clever in the way he has place the Gummy Bears in different historical and day to day settings. My favorites are the North Pole, The Titanic, the Chicago Gang wars, bikini wearing on the beach and the pizza toppings! I laughed out loud the whole time I was reading it. I would recommend this book for any age, but especially kids.

Life Is a Dream: A Play.

FORGET HAMLET, A NEW GUY IS IN TOWN
To be or not to be maybe is one of the most famous quotation. It is catchy, but " ¿Qué es la vida?/un frenesi/ ¿Qué es la vida?/ una ilusión" is better.

Forget a spoiled prince too obssesed with his mother. Forget a maid who needs a therapy and soon. We have Segismundo and Rosaura. A brave, drop dead gorgeous dark hero and a resourceful, witty, inteligent heroine. You will laugh, you will cry.
You have romance, sword-fighting-cross-star lovers, intrigue, foreign policy. All in one.

Seriously, this is the best play ever written. You can enjoy only the story or find a real interpretation of Spain under the Habsburgs. But also a search for identity. Calderon asks the eternal question WHO ARE WE and wrapped it in a wonderful, rich and manificent dress.
Try it and you forget Dennmark. And if you can read it in Spanish. Maybe is hard but it will worth.

Life is indeed a dream
This immortal play is an allegory: a tale which illustrates us on some superior truth, employing symbols. Basil is the king of Poland, who hides his son Sigmund (Freud?, just kidding)in a tower, for fear that an oracle may come true. Once, he takes him out to see what kind of man he is, and discovers Sigmund is arrogant and authoritarian. Then he puts him back in his cell and manages to convince him that everything was just a dream. After that, civil war begins, and Sigmund is out to fight, a totally different man from what he was.

"Life is a dream" is a play about the utter unreliability of our senses. Of course, we have to use them to figure out some reality in which we can live. But we have no idea of who we are and where we come from, much less what will happen after death. We also don't know what death is. It is also a case in favor of peace and solidarity. Why spend our brief and dream-like time on Earth being mean and dirty?: let's all be friendly and good, and this will be a good dream and not a nightmare.

Despite its philosophical subject, the play is quick-paced and funny. The plot to make Sigmund believe everything was a dream is hilarious, and it is easy to see why it's a classic. Read it.

Understanding and Appreciating Your Lithuanian Roots
As a grandchild of paternal Lithuanian immigrants and maternal French immigrants, I was always interested in my heritage. Information on French history abounds but my knowledge of my Lithuanian roots was totally dependent on vague stories repeated by my father that were difficult to put in a historic context. This book clarified and totally collaborated the stories that I grew up with and deepened my respect for this amazing freedom-loving country.

Important piece of Lithuanian historiography
This book is important to Lithuanian historiography because this is the only English title I know that deals with Lithuania in the interwar years. Other titles, like von Rauch's book, group the three Baltic states' history together under one title. This book is solely dedicated to Lithuanian interwar history.

The book is well written by prestigious authors who have done their research. The notes at the end are extensive. The book is clearly written. Even a novice in Lithuanian history would have an easy time following this volume.

The book does an excellent job of showing the pivotal role Lithuania had in the eastern European balance of power between Germany and the USSR versus the Polish, French, British alliance. The book reminds of the title 'Lithuania: The Rebel Nation' by Stanley Vardys. The authors do a great job of clearly explaining the plight of Lithuania in this balance of power.

Another interesting note is that some of the authors in this edited book are from Lithuania. It is interesting to see the view of homegrown Lithuanians on this time period in Lithuanian history. They rate high in their objectivity.

Anyone interested in Lithuanian history should own this book.

wonderful story for delayed or autistic kids to reenact
Good rendition of a classic story..perfect if you are looking for stories that your speech delayed or autistic child can learn to "reenact" during floortime. We go to the park now and ask the other kids if they want to play "red riding hood" and they usually all say YES! So the book is really just the beginning of a fun play activity.

Classic Tale Emphasizes Family Closeness and Moral Values
This is such a wonderful version of the classic story.

When I was looking for a copy of this classic tale, I wanted to know about the ending. Thankfully, this is NOT the more gruesome ending where the wolf eats Little Red and Grandma and the woodcarvers chop the wolf open. My daughter is only 2, and aside from this not making sense that the victims are still alive after the wolf eats them, it's a little inappropriate for this age group (the part about chopping the wolf open). Instead, the wolf puts grandma in the closet to "save her for later". The best part is that the cape almost seems to represent a super-hero type or magical properties ("She leaped away, light as a leaf in her cherry red cape").

This version has a more elaborate, sweeter beginning than the version I grew up with, which merely jumped right into Little Red Riding Hood leaving for the path to Grandma's house. It begins with Grandma sewing the red cape for Little Red Riding Hood because her Grandma enjoyed her visits with her granddaughter. It then goes on to explain how she wore the cape so often that this is how she got her nickname. This emphasizes the importance of special family relationships.

The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, yet simple enough for the very young child. One element that I especially enjoyed is that the nightgown the wolf wears (Grandma's nightgown) has sheep print on it. Besides adding humor, this adds the element of foreshadowing (hint, hint!).

Of course, the moral of the story remains the same. Leaving the path will always lead to trouble.

power
If you don't know about this subject, look into this powerful book. If you do know something about it, this book will add a human quality that is unforgetable

The reality of being a romany person in the Czech Republic.
I have lived in the Czech Republic for several years: however, it is still very hard to understand what it really means to be a gypsy here.

Paul Polansky's poems bring alive both the horror of the Lety camp (which he was responsible for exposing to the world) and the reality of life for romany people in modern Czech society.

Through the glass, brightly
Few artists of the 20th century have engendered as much controversy while having such an enormous impact on coming to grips with personal demons on canvas as Francis Bacon. Once again the erudite scholar David Sylvester has written about his friend in a way that makes all other collections of images and gossips about Bacon pale in comparison. This book is a true "retrospective", not only because if can look at the entire output of this enormously gifted painter, but it puts Bacon in a perspective of comparison and study of influences that span all of art history. Sylvester manages all this with his usual eloquence of writing style. This book is an academic treatise, but is is also a biography that looks carefully and thoughtfully at the mad mind and paintings of Francis Bacon. Highly recommended for Bacon devotees as well as those who still seek to understand the past century's art journey.

Looking Back At Francis Bacon
A truly excellent addition to any art enthusiast's collection of artists' books and mongraphs. This piece is a must-have for any fan of the artist's work...it fills in quite a few holes regarding Bacon in relation to his work and his working process. Even if you are unfamiliar with the artist's work, you will find Sylvester's prose will easily entice you into taking a good long look at one man's dark, yet triumphant take on humanity and the world we live in. Brilliant!

As part of my studies in the University of PR, I had the extraordinary experience of reading "the soul" of Jose Maria Arguedas. He trully wrote from his heart about his lack of belonging of either culture he was exposed or came from. As a Hispanic dealing with Hispanics in the States, I strongly recomend this book as an eye opening to the struggles that other people have faced in their life.

Aventuras,Honor,Valor y algunos buenos lanses

Loser and Keepers
An unparalleled accomplishment. Nina Barragan combines abundant research with an artistic panache ... producing a thorough and vivid narrative of the relocation of Russian Jews to Argentina at the turn of the century. This is a remarkable, powerful story, historical fiction at it's best. Told primarily through the diary of Rifke Schulman, a fictional yet deceptively 'authentic' immigrant, the story unfolds leaving an imprint of this heroic woman's life forever in our memories. A beautifully crafted book.

Urgent and Poignant
The format is striking and gripping in itself. An imaginary journal of a remarkable, strong willed, independent woman is interspersed with short stories. The stories are poignant, contemporary portraits of Americans, each of whom has some tenuous link to the journal. The grandeur of this vision and the urgency of the details, make it difficult for the reader to put the book down. In the journal, the dramatic politics and cultural events of the early twentieth century come alive through unforgetable characters from the white slave trade to the striking unions. In the short stories we frequently come to know wonderful, engaging personalities who share a common reality: there are some things they just don't get. An unforgetable book!
