WONDERFUL
I had to read this book for my German studies class (Women and Family in the 19th Century). This was the book that moved me the most, enraged me the most and made me think the most. This book not only covers many of the historical events of the 19th century (such as the Prussian War, Hep-Hep riots, and Ernst Haeckel), but it also covers feminism--or rather the repression of feminism that the main character, Agathe, experiences.

Although this book was written in the 19th century, this novel feels quite modern (and is a good translation) in the thought and concepts of feminism and gender equality.

Be warned: this book, as a reflection of a woman's life in the 19th century, is not happy, but is extremely satisfying because it feels so real and is extremely thought provoking.

Do not be turned off by the cost of this book. It is worth the expense and is a good quality printing.

Unique, interesting, and definitely worth reading!
We read Ms. Tatlock's manuscript for a class two years ago before it was published and it was excellent! This is a translation of a nineteenth-century German novel about a girl coming of age in a very repressive bourgeois culture. It was too controversial to be printed in English at the time, and went out of print in Germany when Hitler came into power. This book has a lot of history and a lot to teach, as well as being an interesting (although somewhat disturbing for those of us interested in gender equality) story. Highly recommended!

REVIEW QUOTES
For Gioconda Belli, a woman's sexuality and female identity are inseparable from an expansive and nurturing love of the world. In her poetry, the longing for a society in which people construct a future together is animated by an inextinguishable erotic, maternal, and transcendental loving desire. The poetry in FROM EVE'S RIB, a selection that includes Belli's early as well as recent work, is revolutionary in that it links an intense eroticism with the insurrectionary spirit of the Nicaraguan people.

"Her poetry [is] at once extremely sensual and politically direct...a kind of public love-poetry that [comes] closer...to expressing the passion of Nicaragua than anything I ever heard." --Salman Rushdie, The Jaguar Smile (Penguin, 1987)

"Her lessons in eroticism and her deeply engaged social conscience and her feminism, her historical perspective and her personal, passionate imagination have marked her poems with the indelible hand print of originality." --American Book Review

Butterflies and nightingales
"From Eve's Rib" is a collection of poetry by Gioconda Belli of Nicaragua. Her work has been translated into English by Steven F. White. This is a bilingual edition, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.

Belli's voice is passionate, lusty, sensual, tender, and politically aware. Many of her poems are woman-centered; she writes about menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, physical love, and pride in being a woman. Many poems deal with the Nicaraguan revolution and its aftermath. One of the best poems in the collection, "The Dream Bearers," is a prophetic poem of hope in which Belli celebrates those who dream "not of the world's destruction, / but of building a world of butterflies / and nightingales." Also memorable is "Conjunction," in which Belli reflects on the women writers of past generations. This is a fine collection of poetry that I enthusiastically recommend, particularly to those with an interest in women's studies or Latin American literature.

Pure spirit, pure soul.
Having been interested in Neruda since seeing the movie "Il Postino," I've glanced at several collections for over 3 years, but never took a book home for my own. Looking for a collection that contained "Ode to Laziness" (one of my favorite subjects), I found and purchased Full Woman, Fleshly Apple, Hot Moon. I sat down in a big chair on a Sunday afternoon and opened it to the first page and the love affair started there. Usually, I read a book of poems randomly, just flipping here and there, looking for whatever surprizes me. For some unknown reason, I started this book from the beginning with Mitchell's introduction, then read the first poem. I couldn't help myself as I read one poem and then another till I had carefully read almost every one. Pure spirit, pure soul. Each poem is a love poem to the most simple, everyday, ordinary things of this world--his suit, his socks, his watch--engaging us to see a sheer web of grace that runs through out our lives. Put another way, Neruda sees and shows us a world that shimmers and loves us as fully as we love it.

Many thanks to S. Mitchell for creating this collection.

Mitchell's translation lets Neruda's voice sing off the page
Stephen Mitchell translates an assortment of Neruda's lesser known poems that rank among his personal favorites. You can tell Mitchell truly loves these works as Neruda's voice almost literally sings off the page in English. The book itself is beautifully constructed with a painting by Gaugin adorning the cover. When you hold it in your hands, you will know you have discovered something truly special. You may also be interested in Mitchell's lovely translations of Rilke.

Another poetic triumph by Neruda
"Fully Empowered" is an outstanding volume of poetry by Pablo Neruda of Chile. The book has been translated into English by Alastair Reid, and is presented in a bilingual format, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.

Overall, I found Neruda's voice in this book to echo that of United States poet Walt Whitman (who could be seen as one of Neruda's 19th century poetic "ancestors"). Neruda's attentive poetic eye looks at both humanity and nature with reverence and compassion. His voice is often very tender. Like Whitman did in his work, Neruda often writes in the first person in this book.

Some of the most memorable selections in this book include "To Don Asterio Alarcon, Clocksmith of Valparaiso," in which Neruda finds dignity and transcendence in the work of the title figure; "Thistle," in which he celebrates "the blue thistle of Chile"; and "The People," a passionate tribute to all the working people of the world.

In "Summary," Neruda writes, ". . . my life was always / singing its way between joy and obligation." "Fully Empowered" marvelously embodies both Neruda's sense of moral duty and the joy that proceeds from his life's work.

El Capitan de la poesie latina
This bilingual collection of Nerudas poetry is an outstanding selection. Neruda is the great one of Latin American poetry. New Directions has for years provided us with quality bilingual collections of great world poets. Plenos Poderes (Fully Empowered) is another classic. Neruda continuously made impassioned pleas for his people. He was a great lover of his land and his people. He was a true revolutionary poet in the vein of Lorca. This collection was published in 1962 (nine years before he was justly awarded the Nobel Prize.) Here Neruda states his mission in a poem like The Poets Obligation: He will give voice to those who have no voice. He will speak for the downtrodden. The imagery of the sea is scintillating. The poem Fully Empowered also backs this stand. But amid the political stuff there are some beautiful lyric poems as well. To Sorrow is a gorgeous poem. Short pieces like It is Born reflect a deeply sensitive poet. This is classic Neruda. Viva Pablo Neruda!

Generation of 1914

what is the "generation of 1914"?
Professor Robert Wohl examines the phenomenon of the development of the generational history as applied to the study of the "generation of 1914" in five major European countries - France, Germany, Britain, Spain and Italy.

The generation of "wanderers between two worlds", devastated, redeemed and then lost in the Great War. This was not a unified collection of people, but really three waves with only a few years apart - those which came to 1914 with a sense of duty, values and purpose, those 17 year olds who only a few years younger did not take time to mature and were thrust head on to the doom of Verdun, and lastly those who were prepared to the fact that their lifes will be lost, but did not have time to serve when the war ended in 1918, but were marked by it for the rest of their lifes. How different this experience must've been, and how intimately and delicately things intervined to create a common thrust of the generation of the war. Wohl explores those experiences from phylosophical, philological, economical, religious and political perspective. Althought the book is packed with footnotes, anotations and hundereds of names, it reads in a very fluid fashion.

Excellent work looking at a complex period
Wohl does an excellent job reworking the idea of 'generational history' in the context of the Great War. With a study of France, Germany, England, Spain and Italy, Wohl looks at the ways in which generations involve themselves in society. What is striking about this book is the fact that Wohl has chosen to situate it in the context of the very confusing lead-up to the First World War. Some general socio-political history, but really an excellent tool for understanding what it meant to be young in 5 different and important countries of Europe. If you are looking to get a handle on what it meant to be of the war generation, their history and unfortunate fate, then this is an absolute must-read. On the whole, remarkably readable, although it does get a bit heavy in philosophy as well. All in all, well worth the effort!

A simply masterful presentation of Seurat's work
This beautiful catalog from an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992 is an excellent anthology of Seurat's work, juxtaposing finished works with sketches, and includes a large selection of sketches as a student. The size allows the works to be displayed in all their glory. If you like Seurat, buy this!

Fantastic
I felt that this book is the best overall catalog of the work of Stuart Davis. It includes an enormous amount of color and black and white pictures of his paintings and of himself. It also includes a good synopsis of his life and extrordinary career. If you need a book on Stuart Davis than this is the best.

Amazing!
This is an amazing book.

I bought two others on this subject that came out recently and was very disapointed that they were essentially tales told by old soldiers. This one doesn't just talk about the operations, it shows where, when and what each secret operation was.

Period photos and paperwork are also pictured to back up the claims about what this unit did. Also are organizational charts, roster of officers, and my favorite, an essay about possible connections between Patton and decption. Now there's a book I want someone to write!

Everyone always advertises their books as 'never before seen' and "unknown stories" and all that hooey. This book delivers. Possibly the most important new book on WW2 I have read in the past few years.

A simply fascinating military history
Ghosts Of The Eto: American Tactical Deception Units In The European Theater 1944-1945 by military historian and expert Jonathan Gawne, provides the reader with an informed and informative look at the 23rd Special Troops, who fought the German army at the end of World War II using deception as an effective military tactic. Telling the compelling story of courageous and cunning soldiers through declassified memos and the testimony of survivors, Ghosts Of The Eto is highly recommended reading as being a simply fascinating military history of a hidden aspect of World War II that would have a profound and lasting influence on military strategy and tactics.

Amazing reproductions of details on translucent paper
I just bought this book and I am amazed by the wonderful details you can see in the reproductions of some of the most important frescos by Giotto.
You can see details that you cannot appreciate neither if you go to see them in person.
The only thing is that the pictures of the frescos are taken before the restoration that the Scrovegni Chapel went through in recent years.

Luminous
The color reproductions in this book of the frescoes in the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua depicting episodes in the life of Christ (and the Virgin Mary) are among the most, if not the most, beautiful I've ever seen. Printed on textured and translucent paper, the effect is to allow them to glow with astonishing freshness. The more enlarged reproductions not only allow one to examine the artist's technique, but to appreciate the full expressiveness of face and form. Very moving.
