The Athenian Acropolis: History, Mythology, and Archaeology from the Neolithic Era to the Present

A comprehensive reference book on the Acropolis
This book distils generations of research and provides up-to-date information.

My only quibble is that the author accepts the art historians' view on the refinements in the Parthenon rather than having presented a practical architectural examination of the building. Otherwise it's a tour de force.

One more thing: don't be put off by the out of focus photograph on the cover.

A Thorough and Fresh Look at Ancient Greece's Acropolis
Jeffrey Hurwit's compelling way of introducing the reader to an Ancient Greek marvel is both fun and informative. You learn anwsers to things you would personally want to know like "Could the average Greek enter the Parthenon?" A great "bread and butter" book to have on hand if you are at all interested in art or architecture.

Exceptional Biography and Pictures
This book is as informative as it is beautiful. The author has done a great job researching Grimshaw's life. He also tracked down about 100 of Grimshaw's works. It's a great compilation.

Grimshaw is a genius!
Being a huge fan of portraits of people: Grimshaw's paintings are astounding to say the least. This book is a must have for anyone remotely interested in scenery painting, but a must have for the aficionado of portrait painting at its best.

Ballad of the False Messiah

Scliar's deliciously warped "Ballad"
"The Ballad of the False Messiah" is a collection of short fiction by Moacyr Scliar, the great Jewish writer of Brazil. "Ballad" contains 9 short stories and a longer piece which could be considered a novelette. The book has been translated from Portuguese into English by Eloah F. Giacomelli.

The stories in this book contain elements of the absurd and the fantastic. The title story involves a Russian Jewish immigrant community in Brazil--a community which may have found its messiah. "The Scalp" is a creepy tale of vanity and violence. And "The Offerings of the Dalila Store" is an odd exploration of lust and commerce.

The real masterpiece in this collection is the novelette entitled "The Short-Story Writers." This is a brilliant "metafiction" about a short story writer who is writing a short story entitled "The Short-Story Writers." The narrator documents the quirks and struggles of his fellow short story writers. This is a delightful piece, full of jokes and weirdness. Like the film "Being John Malkovich," this long story takes a playfully surreal approach to exploring the role of the artist in society.

This collection has been reprinted in its entirety in "The Collected Stories of Moacyr Scliar," together with more than 100 other pieces. Scliar is one of the most magical voices in Latin American literature, and his stories deserve a wide audience.

My candidate for the Nobel Prize but he died
This is available in the Collected Stories of Moacyr Scliar. You will the Collected Stories wonderful reading.

When it comes to operas in which, for once, nobody dies, Gioacchino Rossini's great comedy Il Barbiere di Siviglia (the Barber of Seville) is perhaps the most popular of all time. It's got it all: funny plot, great tunes (including nine of the most immediately recognizable notes in Western music: "Figaro, Figaro, Figaro!"), irresistible characters, and an overture that provided Bugs Bunny with one of his greatest moments on screen. Have you ever wondered about the scoring of Lindoro's sweet first act aria, or the requirements for the boom in Basilio's celebration of calumny? Check it all out with this complete orchestral score from Dover Publications. As is standard with Dover, this score is a reprint of a German original, and because it offers the complete orchestration it will be more useful to the music student than to the working singer.

The Barber of Seville, Rossini
This is a wonderful study score to Rossini's wonderful masterpiece. The story of a Barber named Figaro, who is the person that everyone comes to seeking advice.
It's easy to read and the size is standard (9in x 12in). It lies easily on a music stand or desk. It's low price is great for the starving music student. I highly reccommend this for professionals and opera-goers alike.

Perfection
One of Rossini's best operas, the Barber of Seville, is immortalized here in another one of Dover's fine scores. From the fast-paced overture to the "Figaro" aria (both made famous in old Bugs Bunny cartoons), this opera is nonstop greatness.

As usual, Dover has provided us with a book of the highest quality: they sew their books instead of gluing them so as for them to stay bound and be flexible, and they print legibly. Unfortunately, legible print is becoming disappointingly rare in modern scores, but Dover is the exception.

For a great score of a great opera at a great price, you can't go wrong with Rossini's Barber of Seville.

Superb Photographs of the Eastern Front
This book by Jean Restayn is one of the best pictorials of a battle on the Eastern Front in World War II that I have seen. Many pictures from this battle have been published previously (for some reason, the Germans chose to photograph this battle more than most others) but virtually all of the photos in this book are ones which I had not seen before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the German armed forces during the Second World War.

The Battle of Kharkov
This is a handsome volume with many very clear, full page photos of all kinds of German armor, particularly various models of the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks, also Tigers and various allied armor used by the Russians that are not usually thought of in connection with the eastern front such as the British "Valentine" tank. There are also the sturmgeschutz III, armored cars, half tracks, and many other vehicles shown in close-up. The German troops are shown as enthusiastic and optimistic at this stage. All photos are black and white with good color drawings of the vehicles included. The paper is very high quality as well. This is a very enjoyable volume that shows it "like it really was".

The Battle of Hamburg

When Everything Came Together for RAF Bomber Command
Martin Middlebrook's series of books is a must for anyone interested in the strategic bombing campaign over Germany in World War II. Although most of his books cover raids that did not go well for the Allies (Nuremberg, Schweinfurt-Regensburg, and the Battle of Berlin), this book covers one of RAF Bomber Commands biggest successes (the US Eigth Air Force also carried out daylight raids as part of the Battle of Hamburg but they were not so successful). Middlebrook explains how "everything came together" for the RAF, most especially the introduction of "Window" which rendered the German defenders' radar useless; and the weather which made the incendiary bombs particularly effective in starting massive fires which lead to the horrific firestorm that caused so many fatalities. Middlebrook not only describes the attacking force, but also the defensive measures taken on the ground by the Germans and the experiences of the civilian population caught up in this nightmarish experience.
The author points out that regarding the bomb-load mix in this raid, the ratio of incendiaries to high-explosive bombs was no different than usual and it was the combination of circumstances that lead to the massive destruction (incidentally-he also points out that the Germans used incendiaries in their bombing raids on London and Coventry in 1940 and 1941 so the RAF can not be blamed for starting this type of warfare)
This book, like his others, is highly recommended.

A Middlebrook Masterpiece
In late July and early August 1943 Bomber Command, with the cooperation of the USAAF, launched a series of heavy raids against the German city of Hamburg. The objective was to paralyse the city and demoralize its inhabitatants so that its role in the war effort would be diminished, if not nullified. The Battle is best remembered for the Firestorm that engulfed much of the eastern section of the city (after the second RAF raid) and resulted in the death of approximately 40,000 people, mostly civilians. For hundreds of thousands of survivors, the raids made the true horror of modern war a reality, and the city's industries in many cases were temporarily disrupted. But in the end, the raid was only a partial success in that the will of the German people was not broken and the city did continue (although to a lesser degree) play its vital role in the German war-effort. The Firestorm has since become a controversial subject, but it must be understood that it had not been the intended outcome, as has been suggested. While many of the bombers did drop incindiaries on the city, the proportion in relation to high explosive bombs was not much different from previous raids.

The Battle of Hamburg is what one expects from Middlebrook; extensively researched and relatively objective, it is written in a manner that allows the reader to get a fair sense of what the Battle had been like for the various participants and witnesses. It is a fascinating read and a truly important study of a pivotal phase in the Allied bombing campaign against the Third Reich.

excellent poet
Symbolism is one of those schools of poetry that seems to fallen out of favor. Baudelaire's own particular brand is harsh, revolutionary, and sensual. This is not frilly love poetry but the work of a great decadent of mid-nineteenth century France. While much is lost in translation, his poetry still rings quite powerfully and is as relevant today as it ever will be. This is one of the books that helped found later surrealist movements along with the work of Rimbaud and Marquis De Sade. A great beautiful book dealing with the great temptations and filth of existence, in essence that which brings on evil.

A sweet little folktale
I read this book to all of my kids, but my daughter liked it better than my boys did. It's a corky, cute little tale, about a butterfly who thinks her beloved mouse friend has been eaten by a fish. Out of this comes a story that follows the same format as "There was an old lady who swallowed a Fly." This happened, then this happened, then this, etc. It's a zany little book, especially at the end. It has a happy ending. There are 26 actual pages, not counting the cover page and dedication page. There are 5 pages of full color illustrations included in the 26 pages. The illustrations are bright and lively. It's probably 1st grade level, maybe second. Young children who hear the book several times will be telling this story, I'm sure. I'm also sure they'll want to hear it again.

I WANT TO BE A CHILD AGAIN
WHEN YOU OPEN THIS EXTRAORDINARY CHILDREN'S BOOK THE COLORS IN THE BOOK WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY WHAT BEAUTY WHAT LIFE. THE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY IS A STORY ABOUT LIFE, FRIENDS, AND LOVE, BUT TOLD ON A LEVEL ANY CHILD WOULD UNDERSTAND. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY FRIENDS NEW BABY GIRL. BUT FIRST I HAD TO READ AND READ AGAIN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK THAT WISHED ME BACK TO CHILDHOOD WHERE ALL DREAMS DO COME TRUE.
