Absoloutely glorious poetryThe recurrent images in this collection are from Orthodox Christianity, erotic episodes, Romanian landscapes ... While there are glimpses of political/social/religious oppression and the East/West Europe, Old/New World distinctions, the poetry is immediately accessible to an American.
Her distinctiveness is very low key but absolutely perfect lines. In "The Russian Army at Moldova" she explores the crucifixion of a man in 1992, she refers to the normal elements of the Passion, then to contemporary America (satellites, snow) and concludes with the line "I also take note of the high price of nails." It is the absolute concreteness in here-and-now images that make this poetry superb.
her images will take you "there"Through Liliana's poetry you start a voyage into a world of emotions and feelings that are real, delicate, powerful and sensuous. As good art will always do, her images will take you "there", will make you feel the joy, the pain, the fear and sensuality of her every word. The longer you stay in her inspired universe, the more you become part of it and by sharing the experience it becomes your own.

New and Important Book
Animal Others; a must-read.In a field where the just mentioned opportune human thought estranges more and more from natural reality into ethic-technical constructions, Animal Others stands the barricade. Full of new - or probably carefully ignored! - insights, there is no other publication like it to compare at the moment to my knowlegde. The compilation of Animal Others shuns no taboos for a start. No... I won't give anything away here, but just thought of a good hint: it advocates "animal rights" while making a laugh at contemporary animal-rights-philosophers like Barbara Noske, or downright loonies in that field like Carol Adams and the PETA-like organisations. Yup, it's often hilarious reading as well!
Having read Animal Others I think there might be an increasing chance that contemporary western culture - of which it is an exponent of course - will find back its roots in the animal kingdom. After all we're just another mammal species. It's at least interesting to see that recently publications like this one and for example (by B. Bagemihl) appear on the shelves....
Animal Others; there's only one editorial flaw in it that I can think of; it should be "Animal Sames". We're all one! Therefor: full marks.

Anne Frank: more than a testimony, an exampleShe was able to transmit her happiness, humor, fear and despair as i made my way through the 335 pages of the book. Her words are so descriptive and profound, that the whole time i felt that she was telling her stories to me and not to her diary. It is like she knew that there was a possibility that someone else would read her memories. I'm glad it happened this way since it was part of her dreams and because her thoughts transcended in the life of many people around the world. This diary is more than a book, it is a treasure and a legacy of courage and hope to mankind.
It is inspiring to know that someone so young could have such moral integrity, such high expectations of life and people and such endless necessity to acquire knowledge in order to defeat ignorance.
The book offers an informal but extremely well written description of the dreadful details lived by Anne, her family and close friends during the holocaust; it also reveals some updates of the evolution of the war in Amsterdam, Holland and other countries bounden into it.
The richness of the vocabulary used to depict facts and feelings is alluring and far intense.
It is certain that the kindness of her soul will be remembered.

Book ReviewIt contains in-depth analysis of linguistical elements which Kavoukjian sucessfully uses as evidence to prove his hypothesis, i.e. the Indo-European homeland being located in the Armenian highland itself.
Pioneering Workproof or evidence that contradicts it is either rejected or ignored.
This is the reason why uncertainties and dead-end situations have been created in questions related to the origin and ethnic identity of the ancient Indo-European speaking peoples of Asia Minor and the Armenian Highland, and the history of their interrelations with the ancient peoples of the Near East, particularly those of Mesopotamia, has been distorted or
left shrouded in darkness.
In our previous works we had invited the particular attention of our readers on Armani, mentioned by Naram-Sin, bringing forth the formation and the etymology of that name. In view of the importance this question bears upon the ancient history of the Armenian Highland and Mesopotamia, we have pursued our investigations further along this line and have discovered new
and significant data that help to elucidate the problem of the location and ethnic identity of Armani. All these have been incorporated here along with certain other points discussed earlier.
We shall investigate here the problem of the identity of the Subarians, the Armani-Subari connections and the Armani-Subari-Sumer relations. We shall mention the evidences supplied by the famous Sumerian epic tale that speaks about the interrelations between Enmerkar, the king of the Sumerian city of Erech (Uruk), and the king of the still unknown city of Aratta, around the
beginning of the third millennium B.C., and for the first time we shall draw the attention of the scholars to the fact that Aratta has been the oldest state in the Armenian Highland, particularly in the Ayrarat district.(1)
Again for the first time we shall bring forth in this study some very old data from cuneiform writings regarding the origin of the Ervanduni family and their name, stressing that the state of Armina of the Ervanduni dynasty has been the continuation of the Urartian kingdom.
As these problems were researched, it naturally became necessary to investigate also the questions related to the Hurrians, the time of their appearance in Mesopotamia and the Armenian Highland, the spreading of their language, as well as the origin of the name Hurri.
We shall also include our extended observations pertaining to the
geographical, mythological and linguistico-cultural interrelations of the Indo-European, Subarian, Semitic, and Sumerian peoples of the Near East and to other related problems.
I would like, here, to express my thanks to Professors I. Gelb, S. Kramer, P. Matthiae, G. Pettinato, 1. Diakonoff, M. Astour, S. Eremian, E. Khanzadian, G. Tiratsian, and to all the other scholars whom I have mentioned in this book for the valuable help their works have provided.

Psychological Thriller
Teenage angst meets forebodings of WW2 and the Holocaust. The main character is a 15-year-old who spends sleepless nights mulling over his choice of a career, brooding over his appearance which for the first time bothers him as he meets his older sister's girlfriend, or just being perplexed over why his mother doesn't entertain the same feelings for his father as he does for the wickedly beautiful young guest in his house.
The protagonist could just as easily be the town itself, where a mysterious arsonist, or even arsonists, strikes and forces people to confront their own sense of anxious terror.
It is confronting this terror that brings the town's -- and our young anti-hero's -- story to as much of a satisfactory but incomplete and short-lived story as you can expect in real life.
There are no happy endings all round here--a poor barber whose wife dies then loses everything else, first his house and livelihood, then his mind and his health. Yet Hostovsky seems to spare him no pity, or maybe he's just making the point--if you think that's sad, see what's coming.
The book came as a relief after I read a rash of novels by Booker Prize winners that were all, in comparison, cases of style with no substance. I would recommend it to any one looking for something a bit different and a refreshing change from all those polished but essentially run-of-the-mill bestsellers or crusty classics. It certainly renewed my ambition to travel to the Czech and Slovak republics one day.
