Heinrich Boll is a story teller.
What an amazing collection of short stories. Heinrich Boll gives a revealing look into WWII from a German soldier's point of view. Heinrich Boll was a German soldier. Heinrich Boll tells a great story. He is a human being. He grew up and was who he was and now he leaves behind stories. My personal favorites are: 'Parting', 'At the Bridge', 'In the Darkness', 'Stranger, Bear Word to the Spartans We..', and 'A Soldier's Legacy'.

Tremendous
A fantastic collection. Boll shows a beautiful touch in presenting the horror of WWII and its aftermath. The story "Stranger bear word to the Spartans..." alone is worth the cover price, and it's only 5 of the 400+ pages. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It will introduce you to one of the finest writers of the 20th century.

Fantastic
This book is an excellent introduction to Heinrich Boll's writing. It contains many excellent short stories, some of which reveal a delightfully humorous side of Boll, and several novellas, including 'The Train was on Time' and 'A Soldier's Legacy'. If you buy just one book by Heinrich Boll, make it this one. You will be well rewarded by the rich and varied collection found within.

Strindberg: Five Plays

"Since dreams are more often painful than happy..."
In the author's introduction to "A Dream Play", Strindberg focuses on what he sees as the real nature of dreams-- disconnected and painful, with their own strange logic. I think he captures something of that feeling in all of the five plays in this collection, even given that some of his plays come more explicitly from his symbolic works.

In this collection, the reader is presented with the classic Strindberg themes-- the emancipated woman, rebellion, religious symbolism, and always in every way the search for meaning.

_The Father_ pits a man and woman against each other in a destructive effort to control their daughter's destiny.

_Miss Julie_ depicts the seduction and discard of a silly young girl who is harshly confronted with the basic coldness of life.

_Dance of Death_ is a grim look at a marriage based on hatred, as an ex-actress and an army captain are stuck together on an isolated island.

In _A Dream Play_ Indra's daughter is sent to earth to live as best as she can among mortals.

_The Ghost Sonata_ explores dream logic in three movements. A meditation on the difference between just and proper.

A decent translation, at least I didn't trip over it as awkward. A sad and dislocating book to read, and rare in that it's worth reading as literature without needing to consider its staging to see its value.

the best introduction to Strindberg's world
This is a pretty decent translation and an outstanding point of departure for Strindberg's strange, strange dramatic world. I speak and read Swedish and have studied Strindberg in some depth, but I still find this an evocative and stimulating collection.

Ghost Sonata: beautiful and haunting
The Ghost Sonata is one of the most beautiful and haunting works I have ever experienced.

The Tain;Review by David&Niall.
A bloody epic by the fantastic author Liam Mac Uistin. This adventure is a tale of the struggle between Maeve's army and Cu Chulainn as they fight for the brown bull of Cooley. This superb novel fuses Maeve's greed with Cu Chulainn's might.Maeve wants to be richer than her husband and so the Tain begins... The book progresses into magical twists and bloodcurdling battles and as the tale continues more and more people die and more and more magic is used. This book is so interesting you cannot put it down, for the twists and turns that Liam has produced are brilliant and we recommend this fantastic book to anyone. It especially encourages children to read and learn of the historic legends of Ireland.

The Tain;review by Donal&Turlough
The bloodthirsty Celtic epic "The Tain " clearly starts another war:Liam Mac Uistin vs Roald Dahl. This well known and loved Celtic myth is a stunning epic that tells of a quarrel between Queen Maeve of Connaught and her husband,Ailill.Maeve cannot bear being less wealthy than her husband so she tries to take the brown bull of Cooley even though she knows there will be fierce competition between her army and the Red Branch Knights of Ulster.Deviously her chief druid puts a geas(spell)on them to put them into a deep sleep so Maeve has enough time to swipe the brown bull, but Cu-Chulainn has other plans........ This adventure, told with exciting description and in great detail deserves all the praise it gets. The Tain is a fantastic read and in my opinion Liam Mac Uistin shows Roald Dahl who is BOSS!

read the tain
My teacher asked me to read this book and review it but I didn't let that put me off!She has good taste in books actually! The Tain is a very exciting book with lots of gory details .It's all about our old friend Cu-Chulainn but I'll let you read the rest yourself, you'll be glad you did!

powerful and stirring
What can I say. The world is lucky to have the work of Anna Swir. I read her book again and again. Each time, I feel renewed, more easily accepting my own journey.

A must read for women...
Anna Swir writes some of the most beautiful and deeply stirring poems I have ever read. It dives into the frailty AND the power of this womans spirit. Her poems paint pictures in your mind so real and tangible it is guranteed to leave you grasping for emotions and feelings that you may not have known existed within you. I say that it's a must read for women, and I know that coming from a man that is kind of a silly statement. But believe me, Anna writes from a unique and touchingly feminist point of view that in my humble opinion, all women would find both refreshing and inspirational. Here's a preview of her work I found to be beautiful: "THE GREATEST LOVE... She is sixty. She lives the greatest love of her life. She walks arm in arm with her dear one, her hair streams in the wind. Her dear one says, You have hair like pearls. Her children say, Old fool." Poems about old women are hard to find, as if they were taboo, or not worth mentioning in pretty prose. Anna Swir relates often to the matriarch as a symbol of timeless beauty and strength. One final: "THANK YOU MY FATE... Great humility fills me, great purity fills me, I make love with my dear as if I made love dying, as if I made love praying, tears pour over my arms and his arms. I don't understand what I feel, I'm crying, I'm crying, it's humility as if I were dead, gratitude, I thank you my fate, I'm unworthy, how beautiful this life." The book is also filled with some statements on her life, which after reading and understanding what she was surrunded by, leaves you in absolute awe every time you swim through her poems. Please, read these poems. You can thank me afterwards.

Very Enjoyable!
This volume of Anna Swir's poetry was translated by Nobel Prize-winnner Czeslaw Milosz with the help of Leonard Nathan. Anna Swir writes in simple free-verse about her parents, her childhood in Poland, death, love, and growing old. Most of the poems are very brief, though some are long enough to fill two pages. And though brief, they are all full of emotion.

Tam Lin

An Wonderful Fairy Tale
"Tam Lin" has been my favorite fairy tale since kindergarten, and Jane Yolen retells it beautifully. The illustrations, too, are wonderful.
I especially like this story, because it is very unique. There is a heroine instead of a hero, Tam Lin and Janet are not a prince and princess, but commoners, and the fairies are evil.
This book is not only for children; teens and adults who are fans of Scottish folklore will adore it, too.
A tear always comes to my eye every time I read "Tam Lin". It will be enjoyed by many generations to come.

The ballad of Tam Lin
With Tam Lin Jane Yolen presents a beautiful retelling of the ancient Scottish ballad Tam Lin. Which concerns the young man Tam Lin who is enchanted by the fairy queen but saved by a brave maiden. Our resourceful and intelligent heroine here is Jennet McKenzie and she manages to free Tam Lin from the fairy queen's clutches and is rewarded with hislove. A book not just solely for children, I think. But an asset for all ages. Ms. Yolen's writing has the exact poetic touch and the illustrations are simply lovely. Text and illustrations thus are perfectly balanced.

Haunting tale for all ages
This is one of several versions of the Tam Lin legend I've read, and by far the best--even though the other books were highly acclaimed novels. Jane Yolen's version is short but sweet--not to mention haunting, eerie, and beautiful. It's certainly not just a children's book; the spare, elegant writing and magical illustrations should charm readers of all ages who enjoy folk tales of dark magic, forbidden romance, danger and redemption. The heroine is spunky and courageous, the hero enigmatic and seemingly doomed. This is a classic.

Often slighted by art historians, tapestries were actually the most widely commissioned figurative art form in Europe in the 1500s. In Tapestry in the Renaissance: Art and Magnificence, Thomas P. Campbell and other scholarly contributors survey the elaborate woven hangings produced primarily by Flemish workshops for the palaces and cathedrals of Italy and Northern Europe. The authors discuss the designers' careers, patrons' motives, symbolic meanings of the imagery, and stylistic features unique to the labor-intensive medium. Initially, the need to lessen skilled weavers' workloads led designers to arrange elaborately costumed figures in manageable rows. Raphael's cartoons (full-size drawings) for the monumental "Acts of the Apostles" tapestries, commissioned by Pope Leo X, moved the art form into a new era. Flemish designers incorporated Raphael's spatially persuasive treatment of the figure into sophisticated narratives full of anecdotal detail. The 250 color photographs, specially commissioned for this catalog for an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in spring 2002, vividly illuminate the technical brilliance of these works. --Cathy Curtis

Incredible Work
Having marveled at the tapestry I purchased from Simply Tapestries, I went to the Museum of Modern Art to see their recent exhibit of Flemish tapestries. This book can almost act as a companion of this exhibit. I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the full color artwork. This book is a must for anyone who has purchased or intends to purchase a tapestry. The authors are obvious experts in their field. A wonderful art book of the highest quality. I learned so much about the history of these wonderful pieces of art.

Truly magnificient!
I had no idea how important a medium tapestry was prior to stumbling on the Met exhibition during a recent visit to NYC and then reading this book. I was amazed to learn the amount of money spent to produce (and purchase!) them, and how important the industry was to the economy of the time . Anyone who thinks of tapestries as beige, boring and historically insignificant is in for a surprise.

As for this book itself, the photography is stunning and lavish. Each time you look at one of these magnificent works you see something new--it's hard to believe that these are woven objects, the detail and color is so vivid...no wonder the NY Times listed it as a holiday gift buy. (I think they rated the accompanying exhibition one of the year's best too)

Best collection available
This collection depicting the tapestry exhibit recently held at the NY Met Museum is an indisputable gem. Entries are consise and thorough. Photographs are well done, some a bit too grey, but overall usable to all textile artists.
Well worth the price and a steal at Amazon's price.

A PIT FULL OF BAT DUNG
Even better than Bataille's works ... this is a dangerous book indeed.

A Jungle out of machines
Imagine a jungle full of machines, full of rhizomes, lines of mutations, cyclonic logics, dangerous ciphers, etc.

This is the best book yet written on Bataille!
Land revels in Bataille's perverse methodology, reviving his audacity and confrontational spirit. A dangerous, evil book and a must-read for anyone who cares about French philosophy and its future

Marvelous Little Book of A Great Painter
Entrigued with the painting "Votive Portrait of the Vendramin Family" I sought out to learn more of this painter. This book provided such insight in this small yet beautiful expose of his life.
Arranged chronoligically, this book covers the artist's life from his beginnings in Venice with Gentile Bellini. He continues to thrive in Venice, becoming legendary for his portraits. Interesting that what draws me to his works he his legendary for: rich colors and vitality of figures.

Fascinating tidbits of his ties with Reformation and Popes. His supposed last painting, Pieta, has touching self-portrait of his kneeling before Crucified Christ. Touching!
Valuable find that will be referred to.

sumptious
Okay, I'm no great art critic, just someone who appreciates beautiful art. (Just the type of person this introduction was meant for) All I can say is, the book is like Titian's work --in a word, Sumptious. The soft colors and wonderful capturing of feeling in his subjects make Titian one of the great masters, and this little book gives quality pictures of his work. Granted, the size is small, but one can't expect full-size reproductions for 12 dollars or so. Another neat feature is a list in back of the location of all of Titian's works, as well as a list of all of Titian's contemporaries, mostly Venetian, who influenced him, or vice versa. For that matter, the book even includes examples of the work of some of these artists in the main body. Zuffi's text is sparse but informative; he prefers to let the master's art be the main content, and I think this works quite well. All-n-all, a superb volume!

must own
finally, the " total history" school of thought in a pleasant to read and learn approach. beautifully presented, superb selection of titians works, with background facts relating to various periods in the masters life. a must for anyone into art history.

Read and Compare Translations
By my Green Candle !! Jarry is very difficult to translate from the French, so be sure to read and compare various translations to really get the feel, if you don't read French. Well worth the effort, and this volume is a fine place to start.

Wild book!
This is a school joke that has evolved into an epic! McLeish's translation takes a lot of liberties and sometimes many things are lost. On the other side, he possesses great wit and through compensation, his work comes out as one of the best translations!

Terry Gilliam meets Shakespeare by way of Troma Films!
Alfred Jarry is the grandfather of modern day surrealism, and the Ubu trilogy is a great, twisted work of genius. It reads like Shakespeare crossed with a slasher film. It's also a great parody of anything you can think of, and it is quite hilarious. The Ubu trilogy deals with the epic rise and fall of Pa and Ma Ubu, as they become Kings of several European countries, get involved in murder more than once, fight in wars, have deadly encounters with bears in caves, and even voluntarily become slaves. Great stuff! If you like Samuel Beckett, then you have to check out Jarry too!

Must-Have glossary of terms related to medieval manuscripts.

EXCELLENT reference for the student of medieval manuscripts. This book provides short descriptions of hundreds of terms associated with medieval manuscripts and their production. While this book is particularly relevant to those beginning a study of medieval manuscripts, it is also a handy tool for anyone who loves the subject, no matter what his or her level of knowledge.

The format is easy to read, and the book itself is lavishly illustrated with color examples. You'll enjoy it.

A great little dictionary of illumination.
This little volume provides brief definitions of all the important phrases and terms used in the study of illuminated manuscripts including forms, techniques, themes, and periods.

Great for understanding the differences between an historiated initial and an inhabited initial - or between an antiphonal and a gradual.

Most of the representative images are in color and are well chosen to illustrate the definitions. Perhaps their only drawback is their small size due to the size limitations of the book itself.

A great companion while reading to "Medieval Illuminators & their Methods of Work" by Jonathan J.G. ALexander or "A History of Illuminated Manuscripts" by Christopher De Hamel.

A Bible for beginning codicologers
This slim volume by Michelle Brown is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in the study of books and manuscripts (codicology). In a succinct dictionary format, Brown gives definitions of all of the major terms that may give trouble to someone visiting a museum or reading a work by such major writers in the field as Chris DeHamel. Suitable as both a textbook and a companion to books on manuscripts, this book is nearly indispensible to the beginner and the intermediate in allowing some understanding into the complex technical and art-historical vocabulary used in the field.
