In this retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Molly Coxe (Big Egg) casts a rabbit and a bull terrier in the starring roles, while Pamela Silin-Palmer outfits them in spectacular, lavish costumes, placing them in positively sumptuous settings. The story is familiar: a wealthy merchant falls on hard times, much to the dismay of his two snooty daughters. The third, sweet daughter makes the best of the situation, even when the hapless dad gets in a pickle, requiring young Bunny to be packed off to a beast's castle. Her pure love for the beast breaks the spell he's been under, transforming him back to his original form as a handsome rabbit prince, fortuitously enough. The magic here is in the glorious illustrations, although the quick-as-a-bunny narrative is appealing, as well. In her rich oil paintings, Silin-Palmer juxtaposes whimsical situations with a formal style inspired by "sixteenth-century painters, medieval tapestries, and the pre-Raphaelites." The long-legged Bunny gracefully leaps across the pages, flower blossoms, butterflies, and stars abundantly scattered in her path. Her Beast is hardly the terrifying monster of Coxe's description ("His eyes were angry, his teeth were sharp, and his claws were long"); but his ever-drooling tongue and aggressive stance does bring to mind the less-than-amicable traditional relationship between rabbits and dogs. Children familiar with the classic fairy tale will delight in Coxe and Silin-Palmer's remarkable version--the message of selflessness and blind love certainly remains intact. Beautiful Book for children or adults!
I am 27 years old and I collect "Beauty and the Beast" books, and have about 60 books in my collection. It is my favorite fairy tale, and the story is timeless. I love to see it told in all different ways, especially with wonderful illustrations like these. I don't have any children, but will get this for my godchildren! "Bunny and the Beast" is my most recent acquisition, and it's an outstanding addition to my collection. I love it!

Beautifully Illustrated
This is not only a great childrens book but also a beautifully illustrated book for bull terrier collectors! The illustrations of the bull terrier are true to form and will add to any collectors library.

Fantastical!
Okay, so I just checked this out from the library yesterday and my kids (two daughters, ages 4 &6) were fighting over it! I don't usually do this so soon, but I ran out... and immediately bought a copy of it for my personal (keepsake) bookshelf. These honestly have to be the best illlustrations I've ever seen in a book -- period! Even my husband leafed through it and said, "Oh, you've got to BUY this book -- as soon as possible!" :) I enjoyed the story and pictures as much as my children did. This is bound to become a new "classic". My 6 y/o is an aspiring author and illustrator and seeing this book really inspired her to continue her efforts. Great book! Someone please give these ladies a medal. This is the kind of stuff kids should grow up on. Thank you Molly Coxe for a super re-telling of a classic and Pamela Silin-Palmer for your glorious artwork! :)

Buy this book and eat your way through Catalonia
Catalan cuisine is ancient. It earliest roots go all the way back to the Romans who occupied northeastern Spain.

It uses many of the same ingredients as other Mediterranean cuisines -- tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, beans, pasta and all kinds of meat -- but it combines them in unexpected ways.

Who would expect salt cod with honey, for example? Catalan cuisine has it, and Colman Andrews presents its recipe here. And who would expect a restaurant which specializes in salt cod? Andrews tells us that Barcelona has one.

He says that one very unusual -- indeed unique -- feature of Catalan cuisine is its habit of mixing olive oil and lard together, in the same dish, as a cooking oil. Catalans also use butter as a cooking fat, making for rich, nourishing, tasty dishes.

Catalonia has both mountains and seashore. So one may find spiny lobster stew (Civet de Llogosta) on the one hand and Andorran-style trout (Truita de Riu Andorrana) on the other.

Turn any meal into a celebration of taste and delight!
In Catalan Cuisine, Colman Andrews draws upon the great cooking traditions of Spain's Catalonia region. This superb collection of regional dishes showcases the simple and vibrant flavors in hundreds of Catalonia's best and beloved recipes ranging from Valencian Paella with Shellfish; Eggplant Flan; and Sweet Red Peppers Stuffed with Duck, to Salt Cod with Garlic and Paprika; Pork-Stuffed Apples, and Cinnamon Ice Cream with Warm Strawberry Coulis. The recipes are "kitchen cook friendly" and will turn any family meal into a celebration of taste and delight.

For fans of Spanish cuisine.
This study of Catalan cuisine provides an in-depth and excellent approach to the foods and customs of the Spanish province. No color photos, but the book is packed with not only recipes, but observations of the culinary traditions which make Catalan cuisine unique. An outstanding reference.

Celebrating the Truth
I think anyone who can get past the acknowledgments section of this book is in for a real treat. In that section the author tells her life story: how she was inspired to pursue the intellectual arts after her parents consecrated them as the "highest calling." We are privy to her inspirations: an Indian professor who shared with her the joys of Russian history, colleagues who helped her maintain her sense of humor while she carried her enormous teaching and research workload. We discover that she was stimulated by her students, who she so sincerely thanks for all they have done for her. And, of course, we learn that, because she was a foreign-born graduate student, she was ineligible for two specific grants.

Yes, it was enough for me to shake my head in teary-eyed shame at the way this racist and sexist country continues to make life so miserable and difficult for women and minority students, particularly immigrants. While we roll out the red carpet for rich white boys who thumb their noses at equal opportunity and academic fairness, we continue to discriminate against qualified and capable graduate students such as the author. How she and her immigrant husband ever managed to overcome the rampant discrimination against women, minorities, and immigrants, in order to live a priveleged life in the Los Angeles suburbs is too much for me to consider.

The entire section brought to mind Claudia's words to Pilate during the film "Passion of the Christ:" "If you don't know the truth when you hear it, nobody can tell you what it is."

We live in a vastly different age now, of course, one in which there is no rational basis for morality (particularly in academia). [See Hume for more on this; he wrote about it extensively.] And yet, I am compelled to add that if you don't know baloney when you hear it, you cannot be much helped there either.

A Fine Work
A fine work by a thoughtful and sensitive scholar who takes her research as seriously as she takes her job.

Wisdom in the Wind
As a woman, I would feel most grateful and honored if Choi Chatterjee would share more of her wisdom with the faceless and unwashed masses. In particular, I am interested in the history of feminists with six figure husbands, the best kind of feminists money can buy. I became interested in this subject as a student of Carol Srole's, and my interest blossomed as I became more interested in how I could be a feminist, and still get a man to pay most my bills.

Pre-Raphaelite Splendor
As I only had about 30 minutes to view this exhibit at the Met (I know - it's absurd), I am delighted to have this beautiful catalog to examine in close detail. The reproductions are indeed stunning, and the text, although very detailed, is quite readable. A treasure for art lovers, especially fans of the Pre-Raphaelite style.

Here's a sumptuous feast of color and fantasy
This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met show in the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including a unerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. What makes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied by detailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtful enough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens this genre.

What a great Book!!
This edition of the catalogue for the Metropolitain Museum of Art's recent(and sadly closed) exhibit belongs on every art library's list of " must buys." What a wealth of information and imagery, all presented in generous counterbalance in splendid color throughout. Buy this!!

Great introduction to the Mediterranean cuisines.
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Mediterranean Cooking, starts with a brief introduction into the basics of the Mediterranean cuisine(s), and then presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from soups and starters to vegetables, salads and desserts. Special chapters are dedicated to pasta, pizzas and grains, fish and shellfish, poultry and game, (red) meat and vegetarian dishes. Classics such as Basque chicken, boullabaissse, bruschetta, dolmades, eggplant dishes, couscous, Greek yogurt dip, hummus, aioli, marinated olives, pears in red wine, polenta, pork saltimbocca, ratatouille, souvlakia, spanakopitta and paella appear next to unique recipes such as baked almond mussels, fennel and lemon soup, garlic and almond soup, lavender honey ice cream, mozzarella chicken, pork and clams, red mullet in vine leaves, saffron nectarines, shrimp and feta purses, and spinach with raisins.

From afelia (coriander pork chops in white wine and cilantro sauce) and amaretti-stuffed peaches to zucchini moussaka, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the richness of the various Mediterranean cuisines - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended for fans of Mediterranean cooking: This series' installments on North African, Spanish, Greek and French provincial cooking, antipasti, pasta, light pasta sauces, and pizzas and Italian breads.

Mouthwatering mediterranean recipes!
This colorful cookbook has an easy to read format with photos for every recipe! In the beginning of the book the importance of ingredients used are explained. There are a lot of very creative & tasty recipes to please all your family members! Some unusual recipes such as "pomegranate sorbet," "Lavendar Honey Ice Cream," "Baked Almond Mussels," "Monkfish Kebabs" & more are well worth the effort. I highly recommend this cookbook your family & friends will enjoy these tasty recipes!

I could live on this book alone
This book is simply amazing. I got this book because I wanted a general overview of mediterranean cooking after having lived in Italy for 3 years. I have made several of the recipes in this book and they are simply fantastic. This book is good because a) there are pictures of every recipe and pictures of all the ingredients in the recipe as well as pictures of preparation, b) several recipes use the same "exotic" ingredients, so you're not stuck with a bag full of whatever like you are with other cookbooks, and c) the recipes in some cases have been streamlined and simplified to suit our cooking habits today, for instance the author will have you use ready made stock.

The wonderful flavors and the variety presented in this book are enough for me such that I can eat a larger variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables. There are recipes from the Basque country, France, Italy, Greece, North Africa... Honestly I don't feel that I really need another cookbook... this one covers all of my tastebuds!!!

Henry Miller once described Marc Chagall as a "poet with the wings of a painter." The pages of Chagall are filled with images that prove the writer's words true. Though Chagall is remembered primarily as a painter, his artistic vision expressed itself in many other forms, including sculpture, mosaics, and the stained glass windows that grace the Art Institute of Chicago as well as synagogues and churches in both Europe and the United States. The volume affords readers glimpses of his profligate work as well as the opportunity to follow Chagall as he moved from his early years in Russia to Paris, the United States, and back to France. During that time, his painting flirted with the various art movements around him--surrealism and fauvism most notably--but his dominant themes remained constant throughout the seven decades that he made art. Chagall's mysticism, his deep religious sentiment, and his playfulness are revealed in the hundreds of full-color images lushly reproduced in this volume. The commentary provided by Chagall scholar and friend Jacob Baal-Teshuva expertly guides readers through the artist's various moods and media and underscores the passion of belief and feeling that informed all of his artwork.

It's a sticker book
I'm not sure what this other reviewer is talking about, it has to be for another book and it ended up here. This isn't really a "book" it's just a bunch of stickers. They're nice stickers though - little reproductions of some of Chagall's artwork. Pretty high-quality as far as stickers go.

The most wonderful book about Chagall
This is the most wonderful book about Chagall I've ever seen. The colorful and beautiful illustrations made me so exciting. The colors are fantastic compared with other books about Chagall. I recommend this book for any Chagall fan confidently. Though it has something to be desired because of being written in Spanish instead of English, this is only for you!

Fabulous book!
This is an extraordinary book for every Chagall fan. The quality of illustrations is just wonderful, and if you had only one book to buy on Chagall, this is the one! Don't worry, its not heavy at all; in fact, I would have added more and more pages of never-been-seen work of this incredible artist. The illustrations are colorful, vivid and beautiful, and the biography is very well written and complete. Strongly recommended!

Comparative Indo-European Linguistics: An Introduction
Published in Hardcover by John Benjamins Publishing Co (January, 1996)
Author: R. S. P. Beekes
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

An excellent overview!
Two minor gripes:

Beekes uses his own (slightly) wierd transcription system, which appears to be partly based on the orthography (or romanisations) of the languages in question and partly an invented non-IPA phonetic system. This makes it harder to read than it needs to be.

The book has a fair number of typographic errors. Sometimes, these are nice and obvious, so the reader can see the error and automatically determine what was meant. Other times, however, the errors aren't immediately apparent, again making the book harder to read than it needs to be.

However: The quality and density of information, coupled with the way the information is generally presented make this an outstanding "second step" into the field of Indo-european linguistics for a student, and a top-class reference work for the enthusiast.

The subtitle "An Introduction" is perhaps a little over-optimistic, as a knowledge of basic linguistic terms is a definate pre-requisite. If you know your Dative from your Medio-passive, and you want a good, broad base of Indo-european, this is the book for you.

Detailed treatment of important family
Well written and detailed treatment of Indo-European comparative linguistics, discussing the many grammatical features and lexical similarities that tie this important group of languages together. The Indo-European languages are notable for the complex verb tense system which allows many fine distinctions in discussing time, as opposed to aspect and mood, which other language families excel at. For example, Japanese in the Ural-Altaic group lacks a true future tense, but is much more complex than most Indo-European languages in terms of modal verb constructions (the subjunctive mood is an example of that, for those whose formal grammar is a bit rusty), which express such concepts as probability, conditionality, potential, the attitude of the speaker towards the subject, and so on.

I note the comment one reviewer made here about some typos, but overall, this is an excellent treatment of the subject. It's not exactly a beginner's book, requiring a good foundation in comparative and structural linguistics to read it. If you need to bone up on that before reading this, I would recommend Zellig Harris's classic book, Structural Linguistics, or the chapters on comparative and structural linguistics and grammar in John Lyon's great book, Introduction to Theoretical Linguistics. I can also recommend the amazingly well done articles on comparative linguistics and on the Indo-European family in the Encyclopedia Britannica if you can't get ahold of those, since the Lyons book and possibly Harris's book are out of print.

5 stars !
More than a classic, this book is a gift, expected for so long !
It is clearly an attempt to update the famous "Introduction à l'étude comparative des langues indo-européennes" by Antoine Meillet, which dates back to the 1930s for the first edition. Meillet's book remains a classic, but is of a more compact aspect, less technical, written in long sentences, and is full of digressions and anecdotes: it can be read fluently.
Beekes's book aims at being sharper, written with more concise but relevant sentences; it is a handbook more than a book, technical and complete.
Definetly an indispensable reference.

The definitive English edition, but sadly no Russian...
For the totally nonRussian speaking English speaker, this is definitely the definitive Akhmatova (...say that ten times fast...). Not only are all her poems here (over 800), but we get a host of other useful things like introductory essays, an essay by Isaiah Berlin, chronology, notes, and tons of beautiful pictures of the beautiful poet herself.

Akhmatova is one of the premier 20th century poets, and it is a shame that her reputation is still only establishing itself among English speaking countries. This volume should help in that regard. However, it must be strongly emphasized that readers who hear Akhmatova only in English are really missing most of the beauty of her poems. Russian poetry is musically beautiful, and this is NOT carried over into the Enlglish, although it must be granted that Hemschemeyer does make some pretty valiant attempts to do just this.

So the reason for the four stars is that there is no Russian in this edition. Granted, the size of it would hardly permit it. So I would ask that people complement it with an edition of Akhmatova's poems in the original, and either learn cyrillic or get someone who can read them to read them to you! You will hardly recognize them, they are so beautiful. She is a master of alliteration, assonance and rhyme... all of these being so important to her lyricism.

I actually bought this edition, and when I found there was no Russian, I returned it and got Hemschemeyer's "Selected Poems of Anna Akhmatova" instead, which only has 100+ poems but has the Russian on the opposing pages. It was sad to have to do this, but after I sat down and read through some of the poems, I realized I had made the right decision. What I miss most are the pictures...

Somehow a survivor
Akhmatova was one of the few unrepentant Acemist poets to survive Russia's Bolshevik revolution and subsequant Stalinist takeover and purges. She was seen by authorities as a dangerous element, related to the pre-revolutionary order. Somehow, even as her fellow poets - including friend Osip Mandlestam and husband Nikolay Gumilov - were executed, exiled, sent to camps, or fled, she managed to survive - outliving Stalin himself. Her poems range from the early tales of love and unrequitation, to the tormented later works such as Requium - a harrowing dedication to the victoms of Stalinism. Her use of words is fantastic - the reader can truly feel her presence. This collection is very comprehensive, and well-translted from the original Russian. Definately worth the $21.

An extraordinary book by a great poet.
Finally, the poems of one of my favorite authors are out in one book, and what a book this is! For lovers of graceful, touching, heartfelt poetry, but also for those who are interested in that period of Russian history between the twilight of the Czars and the horror of Stalin, Akhmatova's poetry covers a very wide spectrum. She wrote of love and nature. She wrote about and for her friends. She wrote about her personal tragedies and the tragedy of her country. If you have never read Akhmatova, do yourself a favor and discover her in this magnificent translation by Judith Hemschmeyer: translating poetry is particularly tricky, but the job is superbly done here, because it feels as if the author had written her verses in English, not Russian. If you like what you have read, or if you already appreciate Akhmatova's style and are interested in more about her life, nothing better than the book by Roberta Reeder on Anna Akhmatova. Reeder has also edited this volume and her love for the work of a great poet is evident. These "Complete Poems" are truly complete and satisfiying, ordered chronologically, supported by biographical material, photographs, and an astonishing section of notes. A book for the poetry lover in us, and also a book for the student. I must also say that the translation of "Requiem," my favorite poem by Akhmatova, is one of the best I have read. My only complaint has to do with the binding: this is a paperback, and we all know what happens to paperbacks, and at 948 pages this one may break fairly soon. My advice is to buy it nonetheless, and also buy one of those plastic, self-adhesive covers on sale in most big bookstores, protect the book with it and, as an additional touch, put one more layer of the hard plastic on the spine, so it'll reinforce it better and your book will last a lot longer. At least that is what I did with my copy and after almost two years it still looks new. So, a great collection, indeed, by a great poet, and by people who truly cared about her art. Five stars is the maximum, but I would give it more.

One hot cookbook
This book is full of great-tasting, well-written recipes. I have been using it for a number of years with consistently good results. There is a useful resources section in the back for getting ingredients you might not be able to locally.

a great summer cookbook
I love the Kerr family thinking when it comes to food-- big, blowsy, can't-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing type thinking. I've used this cookbook for five years, and everything I make has great, authentic Tex-Mex taste. I'd take any advice Park Kerr is giving out.

Outstanding!
Every recipe that I have tried from this book is great! I use this cookbook more than any other!
