Banker to the Third World: U.S. Portfolio Investment in Latin America, 1900-1986 (Studies in International Political Economy)

Excellent Introduction to Latin American finance
This is a superb introduction to the financial history of Latin America in the years 1914-1976. As such, it has many virtues which cause it to stand out:
(a) Ms. Stallings is not determined to write an exposé; she is also not writing, by any means, a defense of what happened. This is one of the most objective, calm accounts of the region I've ever seen.
(b) Her treatment of the period enables one to get a grasp of general trends that came before and which persist today. This can be used to prepare for additional research on other periods.
Ms. Stallings pays the greatest attention to Peru's experience. However, a student researching the impact of US financial institutions could easily use this as a template for examining other nations or subsequent periods. She outlines the basic economic principles and controversies associated with FDI, while pointing to competing views on the matter.

My chief reason for appreciating this book is that that she introduces J.A. Hobson's "Imperialism" (see recommendations above). The book is a bit dated, and one wishes she'd updated this work with another edition. But it is hard to encounter this sort of rigor, objectivity, and clarity in any work on such a controversial subject.

Not What You Think
This in an interesting book and not one that only focuses on the nightly news sound bite about the S&L in Texas with three speed boats. This author examines why the S&L situation happened. The answers he uncovers do not paint the picture that the politicians want us all to think too much about. Basically the Federal government changes the rules in relation to capital requirements for S&L based on pressure from contributors and a Reagan policy of deregulate everything. Once that happened the mess started. The biggest mistake the government made was deregulating a business that they were on the hook for if they went under. The vast majority of S&L's were actually doing fine until even more regulation came out regarding capital requirements - all in all the politicians had as much to do with the issue as the bankers. The book is much better at explaining this then me, if you are interested in the topic or would like to broaden your understanding of the issues I would start here.

What everyone missed but payed for.
A rigourously detailed, cited, and sad indictment on one of the most significant domestic issues in recent U.S.A. history. Read how the bankers and politicians saw it coming, but instead of prevention, deliberatly increased the magnitude of the crisis to a level of such massive debt, that the American public would be forced to flip the bill instead of the criminals who are at fault.

very practical
I am only half way finished with the book and I have learned so much from it already. The edition I have is 1982, and other than the interest rates and other figures being off from current rates I can find nothing wrong. It covers pretty much everything you need in financing a home or a condo. I will be a first time home buyer and I feel much more confident regarding the process. A key phrase I will remember is "how can you NOT afford to buy a house"?

Econometric Approach
Gives an interesting methodology - using fixed effects - in order to remove possible endogeniety inherit within evaluating the impact of microfianance institutions. It goes into a great deal of detail on the topics of building the model and the econometric approach... however it attempts to run too many equations and therefore lacks a detailed discussion of the results and theory for each estimation. The dependent variables include: household expenditure, child health indicators, fertility and contraception use, and child education levels.
Overall it is fairly easy to read, even as an undergrad, and goes into pretty good detail about the innovative methods used.
