Slashing Utility Costs Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Fairmont Pr (March, 1993)

Average review score:

Excellent cursory review of ways to sidestep costs
I thought this book spoke well to the non-technical persons who might be involved with utility cost management in a commercial or industrial environment. The information was new and in depth where it needed to be. The author is abviously an expert in the field and has a knack for clearly explaining its complexities to those who arn't. I recommend this book to any person interested in their bottom line.

A book combined with standard_strategy theories and cases
There're two parts in this book. One is about strategies of standard, the other is real cases. The strategies of standard can be roughly divided into "de facto" and "de jure" The cases shows every pattern of standard_setting_way... Mmmm...I think the cases in this book are most attractive !! I love it!

Strategies in the electronic information industry : a guide for the 1990s

Basic Reference on Next Generation IT--Order Out of Print!
Harry is the founder and sponsor of the very interesting Association for Global Strategic Information. His book is as good a review as one could ask for, of "whither electronic publishing." He defines the pieces as consisting of data originators, information providers, online vendors, information integrators, delivery channels, and customers. Overall Harry is quite firm on pointing out that the Internet is not revolutionary and will not transform most medium and small businesses in the near future. He goes over the Internet in relation to established publishers, covers pricing and copyright issues in relation to the Internet, and ends with a discussion of next generation applications and technologies and forecasts.

Superdistribution: Objects As Property on the Electronic Frontier
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1996)
Author: Brad J. Cox

Now that object-oriented technologies ranging from programming languages to graphical user interfaces to the WWW have made it feasible to manufacture readily transferable objects made of bits, what does it mean to buy, sell and own them? Brad Cox proposes "superdistribution" as a solution that allows software to flow freely without resistance from copy protection or piracy--a "charge as you play" model that will work well in a world of Java-like applets. A well-thought-out "modest proposal" from one of the founders of object-oriented programming.

Software Engineering Book of the Decade
Superdistribution is the most important software engineering book of this decade. It is controversial, because it locates the difficulty of software engineering not in development processes or tools---the focus of 99% of the software engineering community---but in the way that software is bought and sold.

Cox's claim can be summarized in four points: 1. The reason that software is costly, of low quality, and difficult to construct is that we build it rather than assemble it from prebuilt components, the way that every other engineered product is constructed. 2. the reason we build rather than assemble is that there is not a robust market for buying and selling components. 3. The reason there is not a robust market for components is that there is no standard mechanism for pay-per-use of components. 4. The reason there is no standard mechanism has to do with the difference between information and atoms

Get it? Neither did I at first. But I am conviced he is right about all four points.

Cox also offers a solution to this problem, a "superdistribution" mechanism that provides pay-per-use. But I think the real value of the book is its compelling explanation of the problem.

Surface treatment and electroplating in the electronics industry
Published in Unknown Binding by Portcullis Press Ltd. (1974)
Author: August Friedrich Bogenschütz
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $180.00
Average review score:

Excellent book with illustartion and descriptive commentary
The title of the work is "Surface Technology and Electroplating in the Electronics industry". This book covers the theory and practice of electrodeposition for devices as wide ranging as hybrid circuits, circuit board technology, superconductors, magnetic media and general consumer electronic or telecommunication applications. The work is descriptive and clear for the layman and detailed enough for the expert. Technique, methodology and clearly illustrated applications are extensively referenced. This is a good work for teaching, reference or the professional bookshelf even though the state-of-the-art is somewhat dated.

Korea's road to multinational electronics production
Technology Transfer And International Production: The Development Of The Electronics Industry In Korea is a scholarly and in-depth look at Korea's road to multinational electronics production. Three main questions are the source of discussion: 1) How was Korea able to develop its technology so successfully with such a limited influx of foreign technologies and capital? 2) What is the role of multinational firms in the process of 'teaching' technology to firms of developing countries? 3) How has Korean public policy influenced its technology development? Case studies, a careful eye for business, an analysis of the inter-business arrangement called "original equipment manufacturing" and more puts together a candid picture for answering these three key questions. An erudite study of a dynamic issue, Technology Transfer And International Production is recommended for students of the Korean electronic industry and technological innovations.

Understanding Electric Utilities and De-Regulation (Power Engineering)

A very accessible book about the new power industry.
Although rather pricey. I thought this book was worth it. It is a very good layman's introduction to the electric power industry, power systems, and electric industry de-regulation. I found it particularly easy to read and the authors manage to make the material interesting and to keep the reading lively. The book appears to be quite objective -- in particular it goes into all the alternatives of the many steps in de-regulation, and reviews all sides of various issues and arguments about electric policy and de-regulation.

The first six chapters are tutorials on different aspects of the power industry, including its business structure and operation, electricity and how it is made, generation, transmission and distribution systems, etc. These were a big help to someone like me who does not have a background in electric power, and are a good "standby" in case I need to know more in the future. The second half of the book is a very thorough discussion of the why, what and how of de-regulation in the electric industry. The book provides a uniquely comprehensive yet accessible explanation of the reasons for and process of de-regulation, as well as the various types of de-regulated structures. It has a good number of tables and lists, and some really nice, explanatory drawings in the tutorial sections. There is a particularly lengthy glossary and a very thorough index, both of which make it a good reference book.
