Camera Politica: The Politics and Ideology of Contemporary Hollywood Film
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (June, 1988)
Authors: Michael Ryan and Douglas Kellner
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $14.55
Average review score:

The Hollywood propaganda machine
Is Hollywood cinema harmless entertainment or sophisticated propaganda? Is what we see up on the screen a passive reflection of our social world, or does it actively shape it? These are just some of the themes this excellent study explores. The authors suggest that the way cinema communicates meaning is not just a matter of content but of form. That the use of certain camera angles, editing techniques and narrative strategies can be read politically as well as the script these techniques articulate. They also maintain that conservative cinema is inherently metaphoric in style, presenting its historically specific worldview as a timeless domain untouched by material reality. They oppose to this a cinema that do does not attempt to transcend its material underpinnings, but instead highlights the provisional nature of our most deeply held beliefs, thus opening up the possibility of exploring new ways of seeing the world.

Perhaps Kellner and Ryans most controversial idea is that Hollywood played no small role in ideologically preparing the masses for the oncoming conservative onslaught that was Ronald Reagan. Kellner takes up this idea again in his "Media Culture" where he convincingly argues that films such as "Top Gun", "Missing in Action", and the latter Rambo movies played a significant part in engineering the subsequent pro-Gulf War hysteria.

Published in 1988 when Derrida was all the rage, Camera Politica does tends to overdo the deconstruction thing a bit, but this is a small criticism in what is a genuinely illuminating study.

Bringing Order to Chaos
Among the myriad works attempting to explain what, if any, fundamental logic guided Congress's 1996 decision to amend the 1934 Communications Act, only an exceptional few succeed. One that does, however, is Professor Barbara Cherry's "The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability."

Cherry's work employs an historical and institutional approach to decipher seemingly counter-intuitive liability provisions saddled upon incument local exchange carriers and inter-exchange carriers. Rather than focusing exclusively on the text of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Cherry weaves together a rich tapestry of legal and regulatory history on the one hand, with social policy objectives such as universal service on the other hand. This warp is deftly manipulated with a weft of institutional context to provide one of the most coherent and complete explanations of the state of telecommunications law as it exists today in the United States.

The contradictions between social policy objectives and the over-arching concern for opening the last mile to competitive entry by unbundling the network elements (Section 251)is thoroughly addressed in Cherry's work. She manages this tension well and proposes well-informed policy remedies obviously aimed at a lawmaking audience.

Cherry's work benefits from her industry experience as well as her academic style. It is a must read for any student of telecommunication regulation theory as well as telecommunications policy-makers everywhere. It should be included on the syllabi of communications programs nationwide.

I unequivocally give this book my highest recommendation, and hope that it will spark the kind of informed policy debate it was intended to generate.

All you want to know about digital strategies in "Pharma"
A "digital strategy in the pharmaceutical industry" is not at all the addition of an "e-business"-unit or -department to an existing organisational structure. It's much more about how sales & marketing, research & development and other functions can increase efficiency and effectiveness by making use of digital technology. At the same time, the technological challenges suggest to develop an integrated strategic approach instead of focusing on sales & marketing or other functions alone or in isolation. This book tells you why. And - to a certain degree - also how. Since few readers will be competent in all covered business functions, it is very helpful that the authors provide definitions and basic background information for all of them, before they outline the impact of digital technology and strategy. Finally, a great amount of examples from real business cases illustrate the theoretical framework.
To me this book is a very successful approach to present an integrated view of different business functions and IT in the pharmaceutical industry.

A must read for anyone with even a passing interest in Japan
Callon's book provides the sort of insight one would expect from one of the leading experts in Japanese society and finance. Despite its substance it reads with ease of a Harlequin romance.

Great Advice for the jobseeker.com
Dot-Com Decision, by Robert F. Wilson, is a great collection of advice on how to start and manage a career in the high-tech sector. The collected tips and advice include good ideas on identifying prospective employers, developing your resume, and evaluating the company, the compensation, and the culture. Particularly valuable is the advice on evaluating the company and its future viability--a key task in these uncertain days that will help untold thousands find steady employment in growing companies instead of having to conduct a new job search every six months.

The tips on evaluating the company culture are also very good, and will help candidates evaluate whether prosective employers are a good match for their personalities and work skills.

The information on stock options and other compensation issues is invaluable for newcomers or for industry veterans who want to negotiate a better package on their next foray into the job market.

As someone already working in the high-tech field, I can honestly say that I wish I had this book when I was conducting my job search!

Understanding Internet technologies in manufacturing
This book is a tour de force through hits and misses of using Internet technologies in manufacturing. It includes a concise survey of various technologies and standards, as well as a survey of various business models that can profit from them. Not just theory, the book includes discussion of what has happened to the business-to-business portals that sprang up and quickly withered. As is fitting from two authors who are practicing marketing consultants, the book also includes a wealth of practical tips for those who need to find new paths in this difficult manufacturing environment. Included is a chapter on security--certainly a hot topic these days.
