Wonderful!
The authors of this book, respected widely as accounting professors and as cheese analysts, brilliantly combine the keener points of e-business accounting and cheese analysis.

This book is *not* just for accountants!
Just finished reading, marking, dog-earing this book! This is an excellent sourcebook for anyone, particularly business professionals, who want perspective on e-Commerce and e-Business. In fact, I wonder if the book has been mis-titled somewhat. In this five-chapter book, only the last chapter or two is directed to helping accountants and other assurance-service professionals understand their position in the e-Business space. The first three chapters are worth the price of the book to anyone interested in a fast, but in-depth, overview of how e-Business has emerged, its basic technology, and where it is likely headed. I particularly enjoyed the authors' effort to incorporate a lot of specific examples of successful and not-so-successful companies. The footnotes and references to each chapter are also extraordinary! Like most of us in the human race, I don't often read the footnotes. However, with this book, I was marking and crosschecking references with abandon. We're all struggling to "keep up" with the e-Business race. As I read this book, I felt like I finally fully understood a number of key issues of e-Business-despite having been a CFO of a fast-moving e-Commerce startup! I certainly recommend this read to anyone who feels that they might be slipping a little in "the race."

A Classic for all Travel Related Businesses
I am in the process of starting my own specialized tour business and brought this book out of hibernation for review. I had purchased it a couple years ago and it has just been marking time.

The author has done a superb job of guiding someone through the minefield of travel marketing --- and her advice still holds up to date.

I'm sure someone can find fault with not being 'up to date' since 9/11, yet this is flawless strategy that one only needs to update by adding a Google Adwords program, and possibly some eBay listings.

Reminds me of buying a mint 5 year old Porsche, which still offers all the amenities, yet one could upgrade the sound system if you wanted.

If you are going into the travel business, or almost any business for that matter, this is a classic that you can use and adjust accordingly to fit your niche.

Well worth it.

One for the Bookshelf
Marketing on the Internet can lead you down a series of complicated and confusing paths. But, if you're in charge of marketing a destination or lodging, gain the upper hand by reading Susan Sweeney's "Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business."

As soon as you begin thumbing through this 562-page resource, you¹ll want to begin highlighting important passages. Whatever you do, resist that temptation. Why? Because if you start highlighting the important stuff, the entire book will be yellow before you know it!

Sweeney discusses basic marketing principles, web site design, the importance of search engine placement, targeting tourism newsgroups and mailing lists, building web site traffic, using e-mail effectively, developing link strategies with complementary businesses, advertising on line, accepting online reservations, maximizing media relations, and determining if webcasting is right for your site.

I love the fact that Sweeney uses real world examples from the travel industry to illustrate her points throughout the book. You¹ll learn how the Expedias of this world made it to the top.

"Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business" is packed with tips that any tourism professional can use to enhance his or her company's presence on the web. Even if you don't have time to read the book thoroughly, it's worth the cover price for the massive Appendix. It¹s got a great section defining web terms, as well as a comprehensive list of Internet marketing resources.

The Best Book On Tourism Internet Marketing
This book is incredible. I am a bed and breakfast operator and I wanted to have a serious online presence, but didn't know how. I searched was looking for an Internet marketing book and was astonished when I found this book which was written specifically for my industry. This book is fantastic and was just the tool that I needed to begin implementing my online marketing strategy. I would recommend this book to all Tourism operators who have an online presence, or are considering going online.

Practical Information YOU can use!
Miller is an exceptionally blunt, honest, straight-forward writer. I like that in a writer from whom I am seeking business advice. Fanciful stuff is great in science fiction, but this is the real world, the harsh, unforgiving world of business today. I need to be able to trust the writer to relate facts, not fiction, and to do so in a way I can easily understand and quickly apply to my own business plans. I highly recommend this book, and this writer. You can rely on the information to help you move your business forward.

Sanity Reigns
Any fan of Slashdot knows that the site has never embraced the kind of silliness that led some people to fool investors into believing that the road to riches was in selling cheese graters on-line at cheese-graters.com. Part of this reason is Robin Miller, one of the steadiest hands on the tiller. This guy used to drive a limo and that taught him how to manage a real business. Now, he's written down all of the secrets that has kept Slashdot from following cheese-grater.com into Chapter 11.

This is really a practical book that contains none of the new economy mumbo jumbo. Keep your costs low, says Miller, and he suggests a number of ways to use free or very low cost software to accomplish that. If you want to dream of infinite growth, endless revolutions, or shattering paradigms, look somewhere else. It's all about balancing the books and keeping costs in line with revenue.

Run-to-Run Control Explained
Run-to-Run (R2R) control is a process control technique for batch-processing environments in which an algorithm is used to adjust process parameters prior to each batch (run). Information from previous runs, prior process inputs, or environmental information might all play a part in the control algorithm. The authors make a convincing point that run-to-run control has been very successful and has widespread application in the semiconductor industry, and is, in fact, "the least equipment-invasive control scheme that demonstrates real benefit."

This book is not a loose collection of case studies or a group of unrelated articles; it is, rather, a complete and integrated treatment of the subject of run-to-run control in its present state of development. The technical content exhibits the benefit of years of research through [the semiconductor research consortium] Sematech and excellent scholarship with over 300 references included. Both the theory of run-to-run control and the realities of implementation in modern manufacturing environments are covered.

[Excerpted with permission from review to appear in Journal of Quality Technology]

Run-to-Run Control in Semiconductor Manufacturing
Having only recently gained significant acceptance in the semiconductor industry, run-to-run (R2R) control has been shown to be a highly effective method for minimizing the influence of systematic variations on the performance of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Consequently, this book should prove to be a timely and welcome addition to the library of any manufacturing technologist in the semiconductor industry. Intended for use by novices as well as experts, it covers both the theory and application of R2R control in the semiconductor industry. Written by contributors from both industry and academia, the book is organized into seven topical sections. For the benefit of readers new to the subject, each section is arranged so that the first few chapters in the section are introductory in nature.

The book begins with an historical overview of process control in the semiconductor industry and the reasons why R2R control has emerged as one of the key process control technologies in use in the industry today. The rest of the section traces the evolution of R2R control in the semiconductor industry, including the barriers to its implementation and the enabling technologies that have helped to overcome these barriers, and provides a brief introduction to R2R control and process optimization methods.

The second section of the book focuses on control algorithms and the application of these algorithms to R2R process optimization and control. Particular attention is paid to R2R algorithms based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) statistic such as the "gradual mode" and the "predictor-corrector" controllers. A significant advantage of these EWMA algorithms is that they are relatively easy to implement and they have been shown to work well for a variety of applications in the semiconductor industry. The rest of the section is devoted to several adaptive algorithms that can be used for both process optimization and control. The last chapter compares the performance of the R2R algorithms discussed in the previous chapters under a variety of conditions for both linear and non-linear processes. It should prove quite helpful to anyone trying to evaluate R2R control strategies.

The third section addresses the role of integration and automation in implementing R2R control in manufacturing environments. These are key enablers for R2R control and, as the authors note, if careful consideration is not given to them when implementing R2R control systems the solutions developed could turn out to be too costly or cumbersome to be useful. Because integration and automation span such a wide domain of technologies and disciplines, standards are absolutely vital to its success. Fortunately the first chapter in this section provides a thorough review of integration and automation standards that have been developed and proposed by organizations like SEMATECH, SEMI, and SIA. The subsequent chapters in this section address specific implementations of R2R control and the integration and automation strategies used with these implementations. A minor criticism of this section is the emphasis in these chapters on the Generic Cell Controller (GCC), although it should be noted that the authors have a wealth of experience with the application of the GCC to R2R control. The remaining sections of the book cover case studies of the application of R2R control to specific semiconductor manufacturing processes like Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) and photolithography and advanced topics such as methods for dealing with process upsets and control strategies that span multiple process technologies. The book concludes with a discussion of the future of R2R control in semiconductor manufacturing and suggestions for further reading which are in addition to the thorough list of references included at the end of each chapter of the book.

In conclusion, this book is a very useful reference for any manufacturing technologist in the semiconductor industry. It provides a good introduction to the basics of R2R control and illustrates its application to semiconductor manufacturing with specific examples and case studies based on the authors personal experiences.

The Sinclair story

A fantastic trip trough the golden memories...
A great history book about Sir Clive Sinclair and his inventions.

It starts with the Clive's childhood and then progresses to how he got involved with electronic and explains his HI-FIs, pocket TVs, calcualtors, the fameous 'black watch', computers and electrical vehicles. Plenty of pictures, newspapers ads and other interesting stuff. The book ends with 1985 at the point when Maxwell hepled Sinclair from going bankrupt and we all know that Sinclair eventually sold the company for 5 million pounds to Amstrad a bit later.

Therefore, this book is not 100% complete and you won't find anything about Cambridge Computers and other more recent projects by Sinclair. Still, this is *the* book to have if you are Sinclair fan or just want to be more familiar with that part of the computing history.

I think the book is also very important because many computer history books tend to be very american oriented and to neglect the UK personal computer scene (Acorn, BBC, Sinclair...) and this book, along with dealing with Sinclair's company, also gives some glipmses of the UK computer scene in the eighties.

It's a real shame that this book is out of print and hard to find now.

A great history of Sinclair Products
This is a tremendous book if you can find it. Sir Clive Sinclair was a genius with some of the greatest miniature devices ever made for the consumer market. The picture is lushy illustrated with pictures and old adds. Lots of great information on products and the behinds the scenes work to make them. A++++

How to build new industries through knowledge leverage
I approached this book thinking that it might give a few ideas as to how countries today might get themselves started in high technology industries. I was surprised to find that Mathews' and Cho's story is as relevant to developing countries today as it is to the East Asian tiger economies with which they are concerned. In particular, their story of how Korea, Taiwan and Singapore all used different leverage vehicles for the creation of knowledge intensive industries in their countries, seems to be applicable very much to the case of China today, or India, or any other country with a serious state looking seriously to become a player in industries where technology is a prime factor. Countries don't have to reinvent everything from zero!

Congratulations to these authors for stating this as clearly as I've seen in recent years. The book stands comparison with Amsden, Wade and other contributors to the industrial upgrading literature.

Tiger Technology: The Creation of a Semiconductor Industry
The creation of high technology firms and industries is increasingly an important source of national industrial competitiveness. Harnessing and diffusing new technologies, leveraging knowledge and developing new collaborative mechanisms demand new corporate strategies and arrangements between business and government. Tiger Technology by John Mathews and Dong-Sung Cho provides new insights into these issues. In explaining how late comer firms establish themselves in one of the most technologically demanding industries, their book sheds light on the process by which East Asian countries - Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan have developed technology leveraging strategies and capabilities that enable them to compete in high technology industries. Furthermore they argue the East Asian countries have developed institutional systems for rapid technology transmission and diffusion.

Part two of the book draws this argument out by examining in detail the various national case studies. However, it is in Part three of the book that the authors draw together the comparative detail of the national case studies. Here they identify three models of high technology industrialisation that the East Asian economies have pioneered. The book raises interesting issues for managers, public administrators and scholars - focusing on the need to develop strategies for learning at the firm level and developing institutions that can foster cooperative relations between business and the public sector.

In sum, Tiger Technology, is a well researched, well written and topical book that demonstrates the continued potency of the East Asian 'miracle'.For those studying or working in the fields of strategy, international management and public policy the book is a 'must have' that will become an important benchmark in the study of high technology industrialisation. The book is therefore highly recommended.

Shortest, yet most complete tech writing book I've read
This is not a style guide, like many of the technical writing books on the market. It is a slim book, but very cleary explains everything you need to know to be an excellent, professional technical writer - not just the writing, but project plannig, getting information from the engineers, creating style guides, etc.

Its only shortcoming is that it is not up-to-date for online and html help developments. Maybe in a future edition...

Best book on how to write computer software manuals.
I teach technical writing at a university, and I was sadly disappointed when this book went out of print a year or two ago. It looks like it might be available once again. Most technical writing books allow computer manuals one or two chapters at best--and they typically include a lot of extraneous and unnecessary material. This one is blessedly short and deals only with writing computer manuals. It is well organized, easy to follow, and to the point. I give it my highest recommendation. If you're teaching or studying how to write compuer manuals you can't go wrong with this book. May it never again go out of print.

Before the Computer
As a graduate instructor for technology courseware I was please to find such a good resource for the history of the computer industry. This is a great resource for those in the industry who wish to learn more about the early evolution of computers. It also captures the length that our society has used computers and puts a framework around what people "think" is a 10 - 20 year old industry. It definately should be a part of anyone's library who has a role in the computer industry and wishes to understand the past and how it relates to the future.
