Rich, Useful Information in a Humorous, Readable Format
Timothy Casey, a senior VP for MCI WorldCom, transmits executive-quality knowledge in "ISP Liability Survival Guide" for a panhandler-level price. Despite the fact that he is what we techies would probably call a "suit," his writing is relaxed, anecdotal, and even humorous. But don't let his conversational writing style fool you; he is a MAJOR player in this industry. As a corporate executive and quasi-ambassador, Casey is a kind of Internet lobbyist. He has been immersed in virtually every state, federal, and international regulatory craze, preventing the regulators from turning the Internet as we know it into one great big cluster... (I hope I'm not the only one who still uses that phrase from Clint Eastwood's 'Heartbreak Ridge.') After reading the book, it kind of amazed me that he would disclose as much useful information as he does for the relatively small cost of this book. Other prominent Internet-lawyers-turned-writers charge literally five times as much, and you get less useful stuff and more legal jargon. And even if you enjoy being ripped off, no one has written a book of this type yet! Casey covers every aspect of Internet law that affects ISPs and similarly-situated e-businesses and customers. If anyone has read about the richness vs. reach debate (Evans and Worster, "Blown to Bits"), you will know what I mean when I swear that the info in this book is extremely rich. I love this book, and it still amazes me that in an industry where information is our chief commodity, Casey is giving away so much rich knowledge, practically for peanuts.

Important, essential, crucial reference for ISP managers.
Computers and Internet service providers (ISP) are an integral part of nearly every aspect of modern life and business. In ISP Liability Survival Guide, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Counsel for MCI WorldCom Timothy Casey brings to bear his expertise and experience to provide detailed explanations on the varying laws governing networking and the Internet, and how their technical features impact running a liability-free ISP. He offers critical considerations for adopting effective policies and procedures for effectively structuring an ISP operation. He also gives valuable insight into contracting with users, vendors, as well as sales channels to accommodate the laws and maximize ISP profitability. ISP Liability Survival Guide is critically important, crucial, essential reading for anyone charged with operational responsibilities for providing ISP services in today's technologically driven communications marketplace.

Will Keep ISP's Operating on the Strait and Narrow!
ISP Liability Survival Guide written by Timothy Casey is an excellent guide for ISP's to follow in order to run an effective service and remain within established industry standards of practice and the law. This book will help ISP's to sort through all the existing laws, regulations, policies, and issues and help them to determine which ones apply to them and how applicable ones should be enforced through their services.

This book provides an excellent treatment of handling intellectual property issues. Trademark, copyright, patent, and domain name issues are big today. ISP's will receive a mini-course in dealing with them. What is a trademark? What is a copyright? What is fair use? What constitutes infringement? What are the implications of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)? What is the ISP's liability? How does an ISP respond to a complaint? It's all covered here. ISP's will appreciate the advice on handling reported incidents of alleged infringement.

ISP's face a number of other serious threats to their services. Some of these are caused by the conduct of their own clients and sometimes through the efforts of outside parties looking for ways of expanding their reach. ISP's must keep up on gambling, pornography, spamming, spoofing, cookies, fraud, defamation, libel, and child privacy issues. This book will educate ISP's about these troublesome issues and provide them with strict guidelines that will keep them operating on the strait and narrow.

ISP's receive advice and instruction on other matters such as planning, establishing, and enforcing policies and terms of service. They will also benefit from the number of actual case studies that reveal how various laws, regulations, policies, and court decisions have clear implications on how they should conduct their own services. This is must reading for any ISP and company who wants to do things right!

AWESOME BOOK: PERFECT FOR MAC EVANGELISTS & APPLE LOVERS
Guy Kawasaki has written a great book on Apple and the Apple business method. Very funny. Extremely unique and marvelous, like Apple. Perfect for brushing up your Mac Evangelist skills! One of the best books I've ever read, and I'm not even done! Guy truly embodies the Macintosh Spirit. everything about the book, from the footnotes to the illustrations, is like the artistic perfection of Macintoshes! GUY KAWASAKI RULES!!!EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND BUY A MAC!!!!!!

Formula for over the top success against all odds
The teams I have been a part of that followed the basic attitude that Guy outlines here have accomplished amazing things against all odds. On other teams, the farther we got away from these ideas, the more mediocre the end results turned out. If you want to create an environment where world changing events will happen, you need to read this book.

Stickingly Simple Basics for a Successful Growing Business
Guy Kawasaki's "The Macintosh Way" empowers the very essence of understanding the principles of evangelism and doing the "right thing the right way" in business. This book and his other book " "Selling the Dream" should be required reading for startup companies. Values and principles in business are the key to success. Guy's keen sense of humour and reference to examples of what did and didn't work for the Apple Computer Corporation, while he worked there in the early 80's, is a fascinating perspective. Here, you will see how an successful company like Apple grows from innovation to mediocrity. For Mac users, this is a praticularly fascinating insight but should be required reading for all CEO's and directors of growing companies. It is an insightful collection of practicle examples of what and what not to do in business.

How the Bubble Burst
If you want to understand the madness that overcame all of us during the .com era, read Play Money by Phillip Allen. The scene: New York, (Manhattan of course;) the actors, a roster of diverse figures anchored in that time and place. The hero looks "like the guy in the Ralph Lauren ads." Does anyone need more of a description? And fifty years from now, will anyone know what the author was trying to convey? This book is for today. I loved the diversity of the characters, particularly the young black investment banker, C.T., I loved the mannerisms of his speech that were so revealing of his conflicted personality. Many writers have difficulty handling ethnic characters for fear of being politically incorrect, but Phillip Allen is right on target and does not shy from any reality, be it greed, stupidity, laziness... Jews, Blacks, Wasps, Southerners people the pages of this novel and come to life. This book bears witness to the madness of our times and helps us understand the mania that overcame most of us. I recommend it heartily to anyone interested in finance, investment banking, stocks and money. Great read, could not put it down!

An excellent read.
The story provides a unique take on the technology boom 1990s and the New York society scene. The characters are colorful (but real), the scenery well articulated, and the plot twists more creative than many of the mundane legal thrillers that currently dominate the NY Times best seller list.

With similar future efforts, I would look to see Phillip Allen among the ranks of David Baldacci, or James Patterson in coming years. An excellent read.

An intense and engaging novel set in the 1990s
Play Money is an intense and engaging novel set in the 1990s, about Wall Street's inexorable churn of commerce, the heady lure of the internet as a moneymaking resource, and the human lives swept up in the endless pursuit for wealth that is often all too precarious. Insightful, sharp-witted, and deftly written with a keen eye for the undercoating of greed that permeates human nature, Play Money clearly establishes Phillip Allen as a master storyteller of considerable skill and ability.

Best book around I've ever seen on resume writing when job satisfaction, preferences, and career choice are all matched by interests and job tasks. This book outshines them all and goes beyond resumes to finding the right job in the right place at the right time.

Very helpful for the homebased senior citizens re-entering.
Very helpful advice for retirees re-entering job market in computers, including the homebased. I was able to use templates to transfer skills from job pre-retirement to post-retirement re-entry position. Great structure to resumes for people seeking alternative to 9 to 5 work as well as regular jobs. Helpful to boomers seeking to simplify workstyle as well as other age resume writers. Excellent book written by senior citizen homebased with multiple disabilities with very resourceful, creative topics and research.

Excellent book on finding a job in cyberspace.

Communities of Commerce: Building Internet Business Communities to Accelerate Growth, Minimize Risk, and Increase Customer Loyalty

Connect and collaborate--in our Internet age, these two words have taken on a whole new meaning. What they refer to and describe, the essence of community, is the much-discussed and increasingly important subject that authors Stacey Bressler and Charles Grantham explore in Communities of Commerce.

Beginning with a look at the importance of community in our lives, Bressler and Grantham examine what the notion has come to mean. They compare today's exploding pace of change with the revolution in knowledge exchange that stemmed from Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in the mid-15th century. More than simply enabling information to be shared by a greater number of people, the printing press led, ultimately, to a change in how humankind viewed itself. Even more profoundly (and much more rapidly), the Internet has not only expanded our ability to connect with each other, it has entirely transformed our notions of time, space, relationships, and community. Believing the "primary benefit of the Internet is that it gives people the ability to connect and be more closely related to others who share their purpose," the authors illustrate how companies can most effectively relate this benefit to their business models. They discuss the factors that are driving and pulling businesses toward online communities of commerce, as well as the transformation this requires, and provide practical guidance on how to build and sustain effective communities. If organized better, this book could have been shorter and more hard-hitting; however, the authors have done a good job in using interesting (and refreshingly uncommon) case studies to demonstrate the practical importance of an otherwise nebulous concept. --S. Communities of Commerce spells success!
I couldn't put Communities of Commerce down and read it in one day! For business owners and others, it captures great concepts and examples of what some businesses are doing to create a powerful network for their business and non-profit communities.

Although outwardly, the style of writing looks academically-oriented, the authors engage the reader by explaining the concept as though a movie is being created. Once I got into the rhythm of the book, it was a breeze, and each chapter opened new insights.

With my writing tablet quickly filling up with notes, I appreciated the case studies, tips, and checklist at the end of each chapter. This allowed me to immediately evaluate whether my company is appropriate to pursue the "Communities of Commerce" approach.

From history to steps to take, the entire book is a gold-mine for business (and community) leaders who want to take their companies into successful Internet avenues.

I also appreciated the web listing of the various companies involved. I recommend Communities of Commerce to all serious business and community leaders.

Hits the mark
This is exactly the type of timely work that will help us in our own Silicon Valley venture. Well done, and thanks!

Consulting Demystified
The day I discovered how much consultants on my project were being paid for doing the same work as I was doing, I decided to be a consultant myself. Higher income is just one obvious attraction of consulting; there are many others. On the other hand it's definitely not for everyone. Alan Canton's book will help you decide for yourself. Here, in one well-written and candid package, are all the things you have to consider, from honestly assessing your job, people, organizational skills and self-discipline to the practicalities of establishing your small business *in your area* (that's an important point that other books I've seen fail to consider). In short, Computermoney answered all the unknowns in the back of my mind that were holding me back and gave me a clear and, as it turns out, accurate set of expectations of the consulting lifestyle. I have given copies of this book to six people over the years since it was first given to me. Four of them reached the same conclusion I did and are now well paid computer consultants. Good luck with your decision!

Real-world advise, pros and cons of independent consulting
I think that anyone who considers becoming an independent consultant should read this book first. It honestly talks about risks and negative sides of contracting as well as the money that you can make as a reward for taking these risks. The style is "tongue-in-cheek", and may even seem offensive at first, but after a few pages you get a feeling that you talk to a buddy who shares the secrets of trade with you. It's fun to read, gives you a great confidence boost if you are serious about independent consulting, and is full of practical advise. I found a lot of parallels with my own consulting experiences. Definitely recommend.

A fine and thorough book
Litwak provides about as much as a professional could share in this throrough outing. He also shares 'boilerplate' contracts for virtally all key players in a film production. Of course, direct experience is the best teacher, but EVERY neophyte in film or television must own this book, and its a handy reference for seasoned professionals and part-timers.

Also check out his companion book, "Dealmaking..." which has priceless cues on what gray areas to avoid in negotiating with lawyers and their clients.

Essential for producers, directors, writers and anyone hoping to get financed or paid or both!

This is the best book on contracts for film/TV
Mark Litwak's book is by far the best book available on film and television contracts. His book is a no nonsense, thorough guide to the complex world of contractual law for an industry that has a history of taking advantage of those who don't take the time or spend the money to hire good legal representation. He is an advocate for the rights of artists, writers, actors, etc., and his contracts are a good basis for negotiations and deals in the TV/Film industry. Even if you hire your own attorney, this book will help you understand the structure of your deal and alert you to details and potential booby traps in all that fine print. D. Kuspa

Excelent and Practical!!
This book not only gives you a broad idea of what security is, but is very practical using it in your work, e.g. risk analysis. It is helping me a lot.
Best Buy!

The Design and Evaluation of Physical Protection Systems
The recent tragedy of New York and Washington has emphasised the considerable need for this excellent book on physical security. Mary Lynn Garcia is to be congratulated on producing a book on physical protection systems that is design-based and is driven by principle rather than application. As a senior member of the technical staff at Sandia National laboratories, Mary Lynn Garcia is well placed to have knowledge of best practice in design of systems, and the development of principles of asset protection. This book is markedly unique from other security publications on the market as it provides a well-structured and rigorous discussion of the major components of the principles of the protection of assets. The book entitled The Design and Evaluation of Physical Protection Systems by Mary Lynn Garcia has raised the standard of security references and texts to new quantum levels of quality and detail.

The design and evaluation process for physical protection systems is presented early in the book and provides astructured approach to the protection of assets. I am personally pleased to see that the defence in depth strategy of detection, delay and response has been applied as the foundation for the structured approaches to asset protection. The chosen approach features the major components of System Objectives, Design of Physical Protection Systems, and Analysis and Evaluation. This structure has the capacity to direct the readerr in a systematic and logical manner to the desired outcomes of the defence in depth strategy. A detailed account of the systematics of asset protection allows a well=balanced account of theory and application to be presented. An attractive feature of the book is the discussion on the computer analytical models for analysis, and the relationship of risk assessment to asst protection outcomes. The book contains review questions at the conclusion of each chapter, a glossary of terms for the unfamiliar reader, and several appendices of useful information relating to threat and analysis of risk.

...This book will prove to be most valuable for a range of academic, managerial, and practitionar personnel who have responsibility for asset protection, and should be in all major libraries and acquired by everyone with an interest in physical security.

Elegant Integration of Real Options and Complexity Thinking
This is an important book. John Holland, who is heavily referenced, foreshadowed its publication when he linked the concepts of real options and complex adaptive systems in a talk at the Santa Fe Institute in late 1998.

The authors clearly and persuasively explain how modular design adds a tremendous amount of value through the creation of real options. Furthermore, modularity allows for the evolution of both design and industry.

In the 1960's, IBM created the System/360, the first modular family of computers. As a result, IBM launched an industry -- and lost control over the tremendous value it stimulated.

"Design Rules" was recommended me by one of the authors' colleagues, who thought that I'd "eat it up." I did, and I'm hungry for Volume 2.

A window into the "new economy"
Opening the "black box" of technological and industrial progress, Baldwin and Clark introduce the notion that technology is a set of tasks and the organization mirrors the design of the artifact that it produces.

The authors model builds upon the work of John Holland, Stuart Kauffman and Brian Arthur (from the Santa Fe institute) on Complex Adaptive systems (CAS). CAS have four properties:

1. Each of these systems is a network of many agents acting in parallel. The control of these agents is highly dispersed.

2. The CAS has many levels of organization, with agents at any one level serving as the building blocks for agents at the higher level. Furthermore, CAS are constantly revising and rearranging their building blocks as they gain experience. Baldwin and Clark carefully document four layers operating in the computer industry, The global financial system, the markets for goods and labor, organizations, and the design and production of computers. In Addition, the authors describe the six "modular operators", the complete set of options that can be used by agents to modify the system that can be used at any level.

3. All CAS anticipate the future. The various models, whether implicit or explicit assumptions, are constantly tested, refined and rearranged as the system gains experience. Baldwin and Clark assume that designers "see and seek" value, with value being measure in the global financial system.

4. CAS typically have many niches, each one exploited by an agent adapted to fill that niche. Moreover, the very act of filling a niche opens up new more niches. Thus, there is no equilibrium in these models, it is not about a "punctuated equilibrium". The process is a constant search for an improved fit with the environment. Moreover, the clock speed of the process should match the environment.

This book has deep implications for practitioners and scholars interested in understanding the "new" economy. I highly recommend the text.
